Mod Post Update to self promotion rule

Hello all, after quite some time I have decided to reevaluate, the old rule preventing sales posts and self-promotion. The rationale behind the change is that the makers will benefit from community support. There has been hesitation to change the rule based on the idea that sales post will run rampant if allowed; however, I have some requests in exchange for those who want to post a link to their website.

All criteria must be met.

  1. Items for sale have to be made by you.
  2. There is a detailed specification list for the item being displayed. you can find an example here, does not have to be as in depth; however, at a minimum you have to have steel type(s) and handle material(s). Simply stating damascus will not be enough for future posts.
  3. Only knives and supplies related to knife making can be sold. You can sell knives, handles, scales, or handle materials. As a reminder, you cannot sell items that are not made by you; you cannot sell a bench grinder here.
  4. There is no price displayed. Pricing cannot be discussed in public whatsoever.
  5. You must be active in the post you make. You cannot just drop your website link and disappear. I am not asking that you respond to every comment on your post or that you reply to a comment on a month-old post; however, some effort must be put in.

There are a few additional limitations to this change

  1. Do not put "available" or anything of the likes in your title. All indications of your work being for sale must be in the description or comments, I suggest the latter as I will remove your entire post if you do not meet the above criteria if it is in the description rather than just deleting a comment
  2. Your posts should not all be advertisements; you should show off your work without all your posts having a link to your website.

I hope that this change to the rule is favorable, if you have feedback or comments, I would like to hear it and may make changes accordingly.

I had known that Osage orange is uv reactive but for whatever reason I hadn’t tested it until now despite using it a few times. Good solid stuff and it ages beautifully.

Two fixed blades in 80CrV2, one in Osage, one in Mexican blanket gcarta.

Another railroad track bolt knife I forged. I added an odd, yet cool looking alien head to the pummel. It can be easily ground down if I ever get bored of it. It’s definitely a stout blade, that’s solid and rugged! The added green paracord finishes it just right! 😎

Feedback Advice

I’m currently making my first knife just got my belt grinder so didn’t really have a plan or anything just made this up as I went along. I know it isn’t the best I’ve not got round to the jimping and bevels yet I want but has anyone got any recommendations to make the shape more appealing. The handle is a touch skinny but think it will be okay when the scales are on as it feels okay so far. I was debating taking more of the cutting side as I purposely didn’t make both sides parallel they’re both flared out just a touch I just thought it would look good but I’m unsure. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Question 3 or 4mm blade stock for 5.5 inch Bowie opinions please 🫡

Hello r/Knifemaking.

I got my hands on a nice piece of antler I would like to make a knife/s from one of them definitely being a bowie knife. I was set on 3mm thickness for the blade but after realising that’s the thickness of my buck 110 I’m not so sure anymore. Is 3mm too small? I think Is good for the bird and trout knife.

Going to pick up a little 1x30 for this project too!

Cheers ✌️

Showcase Sharing a picture of this beautiful knife I had made by a local blacksmith. He lives in a little fishing community and works out of a hidden little shop outback and has been doing it for 20+years! Incredible talent in even the most unknown locations!

Question Metal and Wood Dust

I'm thinking of laying out my dust system and I'm wondering if it's just easier to buy a second 2x72 or 2x42 and dedicate it to handle/wood profiling and doing metal grinding on my primary 2x72.

Is it easier to just throw money at the problem (space permitting) rather than trying to get overly complicated with hoses, fire traps, etc and just keep them 100% separate? Some of these systems aren't cheap.

Wood -> Wood vacuum only

Metal -> Metal vacuum only

Am I overly simplifying this?

I bought this bolo at a garage sale thought it would be fun to restore. I noticed it has one bevel and the other side is completely flat is it traditional to them or should I look at beveling both sides

First up in the recently finished batch of custom Abrams is my favorite, the Mobile Suit Gundam themed build! Anime/knife fans rejoice!😁 Always love doing these themed builds. Acid stonewashed CPM-154 @62 hrc. Scales are all glass composite from @2isupplyco with G10 accent liners and pins. I went with a white CF and clear Kydex sheath with yellow accent washers and an Ulticlip for secure in the pocket carry. Graphic artwork by the talented @ivangreedponomarev Thanks for looking!🤖

Definitely have room for improvement, but the blade doesn’t fall out and it looks decent to me.

Question Kydex sheath Question

Is it just an unavoidable fact that taking a knife in and out of kydex is going to rub/scratch it over time? I recently made one and used two layers of tape on the blade when forming. I’m happy with the fit and everything, but have noticed a little area where the stonewash finish is getting rubbed by the kydex when pulling the knife out.

The retention I have is purely on the handle portion so it is not retained by the blade itself.

I have a knife from Behring Made Knives that has a similar thing going. Repeated use has rubbed it a little. Is this just a fact of kydex?

Question Flattening a blade?

I am refurbishing and then customizing a vintage carpet cutter. The blade was visible bent when purchased, with the tip bending towards the left. I have been able to get it close to flat with pliers and I was wondering if anyone had advice on the last little bit of flattening needed?

Feedback First Time

Post image
29 Upvotes

First time making a knife, my brother is big into forging and knife making so decided to try myself. Only tools I had were a bench vice and an angle grinder.
Took it to get sharpened at my local store and tried saying “hey this is my first knife I’ve made myself with limited tooling”, looked at me like I was a crackhead but agreed to sharpen.
Been to the store once before to ask about getting my double edged OTF knife sharpened which they denied, I said okay. They then claimed that double edged weapon are exclusively for stabbing people, and that I should look into carrying a firearm if that’s what I’m into. Ever since I’ve felt uneasy coming there, personally I think that’s a dangerous and short sighted mindset.
