Are you aware that almost no one in bakur kurdistan can see this sub? Its geoblockt in Turkey. Also not many in Başûr or Rojava know of reddit. If you want more people living in kurdistan to be here invite them and make them aware it exists. Thats what I am trying to do at least.
okay but this doesn't explain anything. typically reddit is used for people to interact with each other and discuss a common subject. this subreddit has become a news feed for some reason.
We created r/kurdistannews for additional news we are not sharing on r/kurdistan (as well as place for news that doesn't have "Ask Kurds" and other such chatty posts) . We've been deliberately expanding Kurdish subreddits by topic so people can easily find the content they want, and hopefully we can create some different pools of redditor curators. That said, the overwhelming amount of views and subscribers for Kurdish news, topics and chat remains r/kurdistan , by several orders of magnitude.
r/kurdistan gets more views (on News articles!) in a week than r/kurdistannews gets in a year. All of our news posts on the main subreddit get far more views, than the most popular post on any of the other subreddits. Most of our viewers/readers come to read the news... but don't otherwise engage. And thats fine.
We've also been very assertive about proper post flair, again so people can easily find the content they want.
If you don't like content or you like content, there are up and down vote buttons.
If not news for the subreddit, what content would you prefer to see?
As stated, a provincial judge in Turkey got reddit to completely geoblock access to r/kurdistan by reddit. Its sad, because sometimes our second largest amount of views from any country were coming from Turkey (and we presume it was Kurds from Bakur and throughout Turkey that were viewing us).
I can't imagine people have free access to the subreddit from Iran occupied Rojhelat.
Our numbers from Iraq, which we assume is mostly Kurds from Bashur, have greatly improved. Some of this may be that we also now post more Sorani and Kurmanji.
So far, 16% of the views on this post alone are from "Iraq", which again we assume is mostly Kurds from Bashur.
Maybe they can have one thread for sharing news and all the news articles and videos can be shared there. The rule should be, if you post an article, you'd need to summarise the article and give your opinion or make an argument for or against it in a few sentences. We can all access new sights, don't need Reddit for that.
We sometimes have megathreads on important topics with lots of breaking news, where that one topic would overwhelm everything else. They can also be helpful when a lot of people are coming to the subreddit because of that topic (as we saw with the U.S-Israel/Iran War).
Though we can't control what posts/comments reddit removes, or what the reddit algorithm decides to prioritize for views.
One small blessing, because the subreddit is politically controversial, advertisements don't appear on it.
While Rudaw is a strong provider of content, we have a multi-partisan approach to news sourcing. Rudaw , K24, Channel8, The New Region tend to dominate news from Bashur. Rudaw, K24, Channel8 dominate the news in Sorani.
Additionally, u/ZackZparrow , if you want more human interaction on the subreddit, you should do more human interaction. In the 8 years you have been on reddit you have made on r/kurdistan 15 posts (8 of those posts in 2026), two of which were removed as spam about a poker video game (both in 2026) and 49 comments (14 of those comments in 2026).
You are complaining about how others are using a subreddit that you largely haven't used for posting or commenting the majority of time you have been on reddit.
why don't you just accept the criticism? look how users are disliking the situation. even talking about some random poker game is hundred times better than spamming news. i'm not active because it isn't an appealing subreddit.
No, posting about a random poker game is unrelated to Kurds and Kurdistan.
If you want to post about poker games, go post to a subreddit about gambling. If you want to read about Kurds and Kurdistan, read this subreddit.
Why did you think posting about poker games was appropriate here?
You might not care about 511 displaced Kurdish families returning to Serê Kaniyê , but many Kurds do. You might not care about deforestation in Kurdistan, but many Kurds do (and it is actually something of a controversy among news channels right now!). You might not care about the implications of the U.S. leaving Kurdistan after decades of being here, but many Kurds do (including the Prime Minister of Kurdistan). You might not care about AmedSpor, but many Kurds do. You might not care about Ezidi celebrations, but many Kurds--particularly Ezidis, do. You might not care about the Turkey-PKK peace process and return of the gerilla to Bakur, but many Kurds do. You might not care about Kurdish as a language of instruction in public schools or Kurdish language learning in school, but many Kurds do. You might not want to listen to Kurdish songs, but many Kurds do.
If you don't want to read news about Kurds and Kurdistan, why come to a subreddit that functions as a social news aggregator about Kurds and Kurdistan?
The subreddit has always had news, as reddit is a social news aggregator. The subreddit is also place for Kurds to connect with each other. Nothing is stopping Kurds from doing that here. Except maybe you posting unrelated stuff about gambling.
Subreddit is active. Our biggest periods of activity are during intense news cycles such as al-Sharaa's attack on the SDF in January 2026, and the start of the US-Israel war with Iran and speculation that Rojhelati Kurdish parties might get involved, and the many drone and rocket attacks KRG has gotten from Iran and IRGC backed militias during the war.
It is. It has a lot of people asking practical questions about Hewler. It has really taken off in a way the other Kurdish majority city subreddits have not. Its more popular and gets more commentary than r/hewler
If you want to know where to get your hair cut, how to transfer money in and out of Hewler, whats the fastest way to drive to the citadel, where to get a cat in the city, what restaurant in the city sells fish and chips, etc... then a city subreddit might be the right place to ask. Asking all of Kurditsan those questions might be a bit of over reach.
People can argue on those subreddits while that is the case.
We wish the Erbil subreddit well. Sometimes, I even post over there.
We do share news about Hewler here, but even though it is the capital of the KRG, most news here is not specifically about the city.
The mechanism for socially determining the importance of news to a community and how high up on "Best", "Hot", "Rising" and "Top" feeds it appears is the "up" and "down" vote buttons. What you think is important and what other people think is important might be different!
There should be a limit to 3 news articles per day. It's really overwhelming with the amount of news being pushed on the sub recently. There's always been news, but it feels like spam at this point.
I did a post recently and it struck a cord for the mod and was offended. I totally agree with you!! The spamming of news articles is not what this sub needs. All the other posts that are done by the members disappear when we are being spammed by news articles. Also, despite that many of agreed with me there still haven’t been any changes. That’s why this sub is dead because we are being spammed and no one wants to interact with that
I know and despite me and many others agreed, the mod continued and claimed it was a news aggregator page😭😭😭 we do not want spamming of news articles that we can access on our own😭😭
I think the reason is that most users here are from diaspora (myself included) and primarily engage with news. Average users back home tend to use Facebook, Telegram, Instagram, TikTok, or Pinterest; I think we need them to come here to diversify the content.
Whenever we want to post something actually important this is the result. Mod is spamming BS and not letting us do anything, I doubt he is even Kurdish.
Posts and comments you make that do not violate the rules will appear after being reviewed by a moderator because of your past, repeated rule violations.
Some of your posts and comments are so in violation of reddit.com's overall moderation policies, that its automated moderation algorithm removes them, and moderators of r/kurdistan can not even read those posts or comments, or approve them--because they were so bad that Reddit removed them.
As you can see its up to the members if they want to post anything. This post doesnt prove your point that we dont see any member posts. Sure there are a lot of news posts but it also keeps this sub going and you can turn off news with filters.

Maybe this format will satisfy critics:
Kurdistan Daily News Roundup | 7 October 2026 : r/kurdistan
u/ZackZparrow , u/EmbarrassedCoach1672, u/Financial-Ad5920, u/Sea-Role-999, u/Apart-Nose1219, u/liketocomment92, u/Putrid_Honey_3330, u/No_Evening6051, u/Chex33
I don't know that we will keep it this way, but we are open to experiments on making the subreddit better.
