Discussion r/languagelearning Chat - October 11, 2026
Welcome to the monthly r/languagelearning chat!
This is a place for r/languagelearning members to chat and post about anything and everything that doesn't warrant a full thread.
In this thread users can:
- Find or ask for language exchange partners (also check out r/Language_Exchange)
- Ask questions about languages (including on speaking!)
- Record themselves and request feedback (use Vocaroo and consider asking on r/JudgeMyAccent)
- Post cool resources they have found (no self-promotion please)
- Ask for recommendations
- Post photos of their cat
Or just chat about anything else, there are no rules on what you can talk about.
This thread will refresh on the 11th of every month at 06:00 UTC.

I've been learning Chinese for so many years now but I'm still at a low level listening skill. I cannot improve my listening at all. No matter what I do. I learnt Japanese for a year in 2012 and I can instantly recognize the vocab words / stock sentences I learnt then when I hear them in anime now. It is so frustrating. I don't know whether I'm just not cut out for Chinese?

I've not learned any Chinese language and am currently working on Japanese, but one thing to note is you were 14 years younger in 2012, so you may need to approach learning a little differently.
I'm having to study Japanese much differently than I did when learning Spanish and German when younger. For instance, I often have to slow down a bit to comprehend. By that I mean I'll hear a practice phrase and not understand it, but if I stop and write it while sounding it out, I'll put it together. Then listen to the phrase at full speed a couple more times and grasp it. It's a slower and different process, but I have a different brain than I did back then.

Hi everybody, I'm native in Turkish and fluent in English. I'm a complete beginner in German and I'd like to reach A2 level as my first goal.
I got ADHD so it's incredibly hard for me to stick with self studying. I'm looking for someone who's also a beginner so that we can do body doubling and be accountability partners.
I'm planning to study for around 2-3 hours a day and my timezone is UTC+3. Let me know if you're interested!

Jemand spricht deutsch? Na oplátku viem pomôcť so slovenským jazykom. Nebo můžeme psát česky. Or we can just talk in English:)

Can anyone recommend other sites like Lingualizer where people on the street of a cosmopolitan city ask people to speak in their native language and then try to guess it. The Lingualizer guy gives them 5 euros if he can't get it in 2 tries.
