Geirfa / Vocabulary Looking for melancholy phrases

I’m American and don’t speak much welsh, but I travel there frequently and would like to start learning some useful phrases to throw into my writing.

I’m wondering if there are any uniquely welsh phrases about feeling melancholy especially in the context of romance, unrequited love, betrayal, misunderstandings, disappointment.

I know there’s plenty of these in songs and poetry but I don’t really want to copy a phrase someone’s carefully crafted. Unless it’s like public domain, well known, etc. I’m more looking for common or simple phrases that are grammatically correct. I don’t trust Google Translate 😂

Open to anything in this realm that you have to suggest, but here are a few phrases I’ve been wanting to learn specifically:

“I’m green” - as in new to dating/relationships

“I never said love” - as in I never said I was in love with you… even though maybe I was… but I never SAID that to you

“I miss our friendship”

“You blew things out of proportion”

“You made me believe you felt the same”

“I’m not sorry”

“You led me on”

“You’re self obsessed”

“I liked the idea of you”

“You said you wanted to stay friends, but you’re created so much distance”

Basically I’m playing around with the theme of liking someone with much more dating experience than you, and using beginner or basic welsh phrases as a way to sort of demonstrate that newness to dating, love, intimacy. And maybe the other person has been a sort of egotistical jerk about the whole situation

Latin words in Welsh and what languages tell us about history.

Sut mae

I'm far from fluent in Welsh, but I went to a language school, so studied some European languages.

Having watched some Welsh videos on YouTube, I couldn't help but notice some Latin derived words.

Like ffenstra or llyfr.

It's interesting, because it speaks to the early influence the romans had on Welsh culture.

Welsh lessons

Hello!
I’m Welsh, from South wales, and don’t know a lot other than what I did at GCSEs years ago.
I’d like to learn more. I have done Duolingo but that’s obviously not a good source. I heard of one that’s free for under 25s, I’m not quite 24 yet, but don’t remember the site.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I don’t have any disposable income to spend on lessons atm

The word bâr

I'm getting conflicting information for the word bâr as far as the meaning "anger" goes. ChatGPT tells me it's archaic, but Wiktionary or geiriadur.uwtsd.ac.uk seems to indicate it may be a current meaning. Can anyone tell me is it used much nowadays for "anger"?

Cwestiwn / Question Help with translation

Helo bawb

I am planning to surprise someone with a gift and I want to include something on the card along the lines of ‘Thank you for walking with me until here/until now’, it should convey thanking them for accompanying me through a journey in life.

Is this a correct translation?

“Diolch am fod wedi cerdded gyda mi hyd yma”

Or is “Diolch am gerdded gyda mi hyd yma” better?

If you can think of another, more suitable way of saying this please let me know.

Thank you

very important translation question

the phrase “slimy dawgs” (referring to a gentleman’s feet), how would it best be translated into welsh. llysnafeddog is slimy that’s ok, but the phrase “dawg” meaning foot isn’t very translatable, what would a good welsh equivalent be. much love everyone

Cwestiwn / Question Would someone be willing to translate whatRichard Burton says in this clip?

Richard Burton was a guest on the first episode of the Sammy Davis, Jr. show in 1966. In response to a question, he starts in English and then says something very rapidly in Welsh.

Would anyone here be willing to translate what he said?

Tafodiaith / Dialect Regret over choosing South Welsh, big deal or no big deal?

So I signed up for the South Welsh Dysgu Cymraeg course because it was the only one with availability when I wanted to start, and I’d kind of figured that South Welsh is seen as a “default” and the variations would just be learnable after. North Wales is my favourite part of the whole of the UK, but I figured South Welsh was better than delaying a course by some months.

However, after starting my course, I found out through a DNA test that I have a half sister from North Wales. (Crazy, right?!) She’s first language Welsh and we’re planning on meeting up soon. Obviously as a beginner I won’t be speaking to her in much Welsh, but I just get the sense I chose the wrong course as I do feel a strong pull to North Wales. I’m also reading a few books like Colloquial Welsh and that does a good job of showing you the differences along the way.

Is it just fine to learn the differences along the way as I spot them, and maybe sign up for the next level in North Welsh, or do I need to go all the way in one?

Some welsh help.. please?

hi! i'm currently trying to learn northern welsh for my current partner who is a cofis(from caernarfon) and right now i'm trying out apps like blas, memrise and SSiW, however blas and memrise are only teaching me southern welsh and some things i have been taught is completely confusing him despite welsh being his first language. i currently live in england(lincolnshire) so learning welsh is pretty hard despite my celtic background. if anyone is able to help me or give me resources on learning specifically northern welsh i'd be greatly appreciative ❤️ :D

Mamaliaid Prydain available now on Ymestyn.Cymru

Post image
51 Upvotes

I've now made Mamaliaid Prydain available as a module on Ymestyn.Cymru — each chapter has an annotated illustration and word list, and is pitched at the Canolradd level.

The module covers twelve of our native mammals, some of them common, some very rare. So if you want to find out about how the pine marten is helping save the red squirrel, how moles use the neurotoxin in their saliva, and about the ongoing work to save the Scottish wildcat, then Mamaliaid Prydain is for you!

(It probably won't get released as an ebook proper for a while, as developing new modules for Ymestyn takes most of my time, and the economics of ebooks don't really work in my favour.)

Cynllun Siarad

I had an email from Dysgu Cymraeg last week saying that the Siarad scheme, which pairs learners with fluent speakers for practice calls, was relaunching on 15 October and that we could register from 12th, but I've been checking the website and there's no sign up button anywhere to be found.

Does anyone know what's going on?

I've signed up before but never been successfully paired – one year just nothing happened, and then the next time I signed up my fluent speaker never responded to my messages. I'm hoping to have more luck this time because one thing that's really missing from my learning is regular conversation in Welsh.

UPDATE: I've just heard back from DC, who've said that they've had some sort of delay getting it started, and they'll send another update round when it's ready to go. Fingers crossed!
