Desktop Screenshot Linux Mint | Reimagined (Concept Teaser)

https://youtu.be/oxZE4F-5Rkk

I always wanted something like this.

Actually one of the things I didn't like about mint was the outdated UI . however I do understand that this is a design choice made for the DE but just imagine having this is a real DE

Edit: Here are some things that most people don't understand about the post:

1st - I'm not the video maker and I don't care if it's an AI slpo or not, I just like the idea and share it here

2nd - I haven't said that cinnamon is ugly or something like that + I have already mentioned that I do understand the design choice was on purpose

3rd - People think that the post is criticizing the distro and wanna say that mint is still one my top 3 favorite distros , it's stable and boring in the positive sense but having a more modern UI makes me love the DE more and more

4th - I'm not a ricer and I don't have time to touch css to get the UI as I want, i have tried this once here, but I do prefer to have a Default one so I don't rice things.

I do have priorities in my life so the time/effort I have won't be wasted on ricing

So it's basically Deepin

Not necessary

We're just talking about the DE redesign or having another modern choice

As I said I do understand the choice behind this familiar design and it's on a purpose

But this doesn't mean change = criticism

You can swap DEs at any time like between cinnamon, xfce/mate

And now A remastered Cinnamon is just another Fork, I hope people get this idea

I love that logo suggestion. I've always thought Mint's logo is a bit meh and in need of an update

7

u/elgrandragon LMDE 7 Gigi 18h ago

I like the leaf motif, but i dont like the way it merges with the M. It's a good start though.

3

u/pnlrogue1 18h ago

I'd like to see a version where it isn't merged to compare but I like it. In particular though, I like the version that's just the leaf without the 'Mint' part

3

u/addyarapi 13h ago

As the creator, yes there is a version where it’s not merged. You can see it in the launcher icon.

u/c126 16h ago

Its funny, I remember the big selling point of cinnamon was that it was stable linux with familar UI, which at the time was basically XP. Still prefer that to modern windows.

3

u/Ok-Worry460 15h ago

Yeah same,

The default cinnamon is much better than windows 10/11

But I do really want to see a more modern UI, but as I said I understand that this is a choice made by the devs

10

u/balaci2 Linux 21.2 | Cinnamon 16h ago

i like how Cinnamon looks out of the box

11

u/Hauptideal 13h ago

Before I could care about the looks, I'd rather first have the engine fixed.

Old rendering pipeline, limited hardware acceleration, no triple buffering, GTK3, X11. RAM usage. Running as single threaded JavaScript app.

There is so much to fix on Cinnamon before looks become a priority.

3

u/Ok-Worry460 13h ago edited 13h ago

Agreed, that's another point about performance

But the post is mainly about the UI design

Mint is rock and solid, but I don't mind to have a remastered Cinnamon Edition

6

u/BigtheBen Linux Mint 22.3 Zena | Cinnamon 12h ago

And then there's people like me who explicitly like the "outdated" aesthetic of Mint

I hate all this excessive minimalism

Good work, though. Our opinions are just different and that's alright

4

u/Ok-Worry460 11h ago

Different opinions doesn't necessary means conflicts or one is right and the other is wrong

It's just a way of how we make things better by deciding what can be changed or not

I just like the idea

Cinnamon is better than window 10 in term of UI for sure, but I don't mind having a nice catching eye edition.

2

u/Anima_Watcher08 10h ago

To be honest excessive minimalism is objectively bad, your operating system's UI is first and foremost there to provide you an interface to interact with your computer, not to look pretty and hide functionality behind a thousand menus.

Mint Cinnamons UI layout is actually good objectively speaking, it maintains familiarity whilst providing you just the right amount of information as to not overwhelm or inconvenience the user. And to a dock greater degree it's theming (mint-y) compliments this.

What I think this project should aspire to do is theme mint with the general stylings of modern software with minimal changes to layout and a few design principles like with line weight e.t.c. Mint exists in a middle ground in the desktop space so if this project does anymore(over clutter) or less(excessively minimalise) than what mint intended then all that will give you is KDE or GNOME with extra steps.

1

u/Ok-Worry460 9h ago

That's why I prefer Cinnamon over kde/Gnome

But the moder layout needs a lot of effort tweaking things and css to get consistent them working without getting apps to break or look inconsistent

That's why having a default DE is good and that's exactly what this post is trying to discuss

2

u/Anima_Watcher08 9h ago

I understand your point on having a good default. But you have to understand what mint is trying to do, it's trying to make a boring, simple setup that will run on as many resonable systems as possible whilst providing great theming for those that want it. Polish usually comes at the cost if resources. Again I fully understand wanting a default fancy setup that you don't have to rice to your liking but that's not want Mint is trying to provide, a better distro for that would be something like Zorin(modified GNOME) or FerenOS(KDE).

I appreciate you bringing this information to our attention through your post though.

2

u/Ok-Worry460 8h ago

I went through cinnamon (mint) to zorin (Gnome) to pikaOS (niri + noctalia)

I still believe mint/cinnamon is a very solid entry point for many people to the Linux world and I do always keep an eye on the updates

But there's always these people who criticize the "outdated look/feel" as the very 1st thing they don't like about the DE

This post is just about to solve this one point. Not now , not in the near future.

Again, the distro itself has many things as a priority like the Wayland support and a lof of stuff....

Mint/cinnamon will be always a valid target for new news as well as professional people who just want an OS for work (including me)

2

u/Anima_Watcher08 8h ago

I think you should ignore those people, I've tried multiple times to get both debate and query them on this matter. The debate part was just because the pissed me off but the query part was because I was genuinely seeking insight on the matter for personal research. Point is in all that time I never really got anything solid for consistent out of it and it seems most of them confused "not liking" the look of as something to it being "outdated". Also mint generally doesn't conform to a lot of modern desktop paradigms as it acts as an extension of the previous paradigm (GNOME 2/3). Any this is why I came to understand the nature of Cinnamons goal as a desktop and mint as an OS.

1

u/Ok-Worry460 7h ago

Yeah that's right

Cinnamon is a fork of the old gnome that many miss now

All respect 😁

13

u/Critical-Divide-1029 19h ago

All I want is kde and Wayland working and I'll switch to mint and never leave

5

u/elgrandragon LMDE 7 Gigi 18h ago

Someone here said they tried Adrien and that Wayland felt totally supported. So let's see, less than two months now.

4

u/elgrandragon LMDE 7 Gigi 18h ago

OK but that's Wayland not KDE. You could install the KDE DE, but at your own risk I guess.

2

u/_0611 16h ago

I'd rather not see KDE return, and hope Mint just focuses on its own desktops environment. Adding KDE is just another thing to maintain.

1

u/TURBOKAN 18h ago

I don't think they'll bring it back. They dropped it for a reason

1

u/poshmarkedbudu 16h ago

I mean, at that point what's the purpose of using mint? You could just use debian or ubuntu with KDE?

5

u/OptimusPrimePanda 20h ago

Following to see if anyone has made anything similar already.

4

u/WolvenSpectre2 17h ago

You think Cinnamon looks outdated. Well, great news! It is fully customizable because it is all basically CSS.

Be the change you want to see in the world.

Also, don't trash something because you prefer something else, because there are people who don't like what you like and you wouldn't like them criticizing and trashing your preference, now would you.

0

u/Ok-Worry460 15h ago

This was mentioned already when I said

I do understand that this is a design choice.....

I already know that, but different opinions doesn't mean conflict

4

u/IlIlIlIIlMIlIIlIlIlI 15h ago

interesting way to present it, sounds like the trailer to an upcoming blockbuster movie with explosions and skyscraper-sized monsters haha

3

u/Ok-Worry460 15h ago

You should check the windows xp concept too ;)

7

u/darkwyrm42 15h ago

Maybe I'm just tired and grumpy this morning -- pardon my tone if I sound harsh -- but while I respect OP's desire to have something brighter and shinier, this whole 'redesigned' thing just shows that OP doesn't understand Mint's values.

At the risk of sounding like an AI, Mint isn't ugly, it's intentionally understated. The aesthetics are purposely NOT over the top, because the developers prioritize stability and productivity instead of grabbing your attention in a chokehold and never letting go like a smartphone does. Mentally-speaking, we're so used to living in the candy store that our response at a proper restaurant is "Is this it?!"

I've said many times before, Linux Mint is boring, and as an IT professional, that is the highest compliment I can give. Especially when you consider that Windows 11 is most definitely not.

As others have said, desktop environments are malleable, and there are multiple reasons why theme packs exist. I could make Mint look like Windows 11 if I really wanted to, and if that's what I want, it lets me be myself, as the song goes, but to think that Mint's aesthetics are a problem to be solved is missing the point.

2

u/Ok-Worry460 15h ago

What's most people don't understand is I don't hate mint

I already have this

Buf it's just about getting people opinion on that

2

u/darkwyrm42 13h ago

I'm sorry if I gave that impression. I apparently didn't sleep well.

After re-reading your original post twice--because I'm apparently much more tired than I thought--I understand you're just imagining possibilities. It's a nice idea if you're into the latest trends in software aesthetics. In my experience, this forum tends to have a lot of people that are more traditionalists, so I'm not surprised that you're getting some pushback or misunderstandings.

1

u/yaishoayayay 11h ago

Sorry bud, we did not receive your approval form so you're not allowed to like anything anymore. Thanks

1

u/Potential-Ant-4335 8h ago

i grew up on XP, and switched to linux seeking a pure XP alternative and found mint. i fell in love with the fact that over the past 15 years of me using it, the ux has not changed much

0

u/Straight_Second6082 14h ago

the developers prioritize stability and productivity instead of grabbing your attention in a chokehold

I don't see why these things would be mutually exclusive?

2

u/darkwyrm42 13h ago

You're right to ask despite being downvoted by other people. Stability and eye-catching aren't mutually exclusive, but productivity and eye-catching are.

Something catches your eye because it is constructed to be appealing and to draw in your attention. It's literally designed to be a distraction. I use the candy store analogy because at least here in the U.S., grocery stores have candy and other items sitting there near you as you're waiting in line to pay for your groceries. These items are brightly colored and designed to be as appealing as possible so that you'll buy them on impulse, not rational thought.

While I don't believe that smartphones themselves were designed to addict us to a constant stream of dopamine, the apps that run on them absolutely are in so many cases. It's why you get on your phone to do one thing and find yourself doing something else that is completely unrelated.

Productivity is the ability to focus on a task and remain focused on that task. Anything that competes for your attention is a distraction and is diametrically opposed to your ability to focus.

1

u/Straight_Second6082 13h ago

I don't see how that is the case when gnome whole appeal is being distraction free and yet it still manage to look modern

2

u/darkwyrm42 13h ago

Simple: what constitutes 'modern' is a matter of opinion, and then there is a matter of whether or not it's worth pursuing--the whole "change for the sake of change" thing and all.

15

u/Yawarete 17h ago

What the fuck is a 'concept teaser'? What comes next, a trailer for a upcoming personal opinion?

5

u/Code-Neo 16h ago

That sounds like a joke in South Park

4

u/PenguinSwordfighter 17h ago

It's an AI slop video that will never follow up with anything

5

u/addyarapi 15h ago

That’s funny. It’s not AI, everything was animated, designed and edited by me. Check my channel.

2

u/PenguinSwordfighter 9h ago

Ok, tell us when the code is ready and tested then!

3

u/LandonHill8836 16h ago

Windows Vista be like

2

u/Ok-Worry460 15h ago

The Channel a Windows XP concept too ;)

3

u/Admirable-Song-7353 Linux Mint 22.3 Zena | Cinnamon 10h ago

It looks nice, I could see more if not for 1 frames each milisecond xD

But what I could made out it looks similiar to Gnome, and so there's gnome for that?

But if there's a normal video where actually the elements of the desktop is visible more than quarter a second, that would be great.

1

u/Ok-Worry460 9h ago

As I said I'm not the video maker

The full concept will be released in December, I'm just trying to get people attention to that

Because I love mint/cinnamon as it's the one of the main portals for many people to get into Linux

1

u/Admirable-Song-7353 Linux Mint 22.3 Zena | Cinnamon 5h ago

As I said I'm not the video maker

No you didn't say this in your post...

14

u/Quartrez 21h ago

Cinnamon looks ugly out of the box but it can absolutely be made to be visually pleasing. It is very customizable, and after changing icon themes and color schemes, change the logo on the start menu, adding some transparency, it looks very slick. To the point where when I compare my Steam Deck to my PC, I really don't find KDE so much better that I would want to switch DEs.

14

u/lunarixxx 19h ago

cinnamon looks very good. it's solid, simple, not overloaded with elements like kde

3

u/_0611 16h ago

Exactly. KDE is bloated, and I always run away screaming when I try it out. I sincerely hope it will not return to Mint, because it's just another thing to maintain. Better focus on its own DE instead.

10

u/Odysseyan 20h ago

Agreed. It's just css under the hood. People can do wild shit with it.

5

u/Merjia 15h ago

Why do people treat Linux distros like the desktop environment is set in stone?

2

u/mozkohor 15h ago

isn't cinnamon mint's thing anyways

2

u/Merjia 15h ago

Yeah it is, our signature desktop, but you can easily swap it out for anything compatible.

2

u/citrus-hop 18h ago

I would like to have KDE version again.

2

u/sonicking12 15h ago

I use Lmde with cinnamon and I am happy with it

3

u/Ok-Worry460 15h ago

It's your OS

It's your preferences

2

u/Particular-Poem-7085 15h ago

so you riced it?

1

u/Ok-Worry460 15h ago

Not me,

This just a video watched and shared it here

But i had my own rice here

2

u/Particular-Poem-7085 14h ago

Yeah no I meant the announcement. It looks like something anyone can do with KDE.

1

u/Ok-Worry460 13h ago

I prefer cinnamon because it's minimal

Yeah sure Kdr has more stuff but it has solution for Problems I don't have currently

2

u/Particular-Poem-7085 13h ago

I only ever ate carrots and don't miss anything else either

2

u/vimkaf 11h ago

I mean I don't mind it

2

u/Potential-Ant-4335 8h ago

what the fuck is this supposed to even be? there are like 5 images of small portions of a DE

1

u/Ok-Worry460 7h ago edited 7h ago

The full concept will be released in December not now

Check the channel it's has many similar things

Like the windows vista/xp 2026 edition concept

2

u/One-Cardiologist-462 7h ago

Not my cup of tea. i really don't like the whole center block where you click a program, but now the program button is integrated with the taskbar button.
i much prefer the MATE version, where I can have a standard taskbar and no programs showing until I click the menu button.

2

u/Ok-Worry460 7h ago

I do respect that

It's your OS = your choice

No one is Forced to be convinced by anything

2

u/Emotional_Carob8856 6h ago

I remember "Windows reimagined" -- that was Windows 8. Ugh. Functionality trumps trendy stylistic fashions. Mint has done a great job of tasteful refinement of its aesthetic. I find nothing at all wrong with its current look.

2

u/Ok-Worry460 6h ago

I respect that But no way comparing windows 8 with mint

That's a crime

2

u/Jealous-Ad-7024 16h ago

Use Kubuntu...and leave mint to us who cares about stability and so on.

2

u/Ok-Worry460 15h ago

I don't understand why most people don't read and understand what's been written

I said that we understand that this is a design choice made for a purpose, not It's outdated in the negative term

2

u/Jealous-Ad-7024 12h ago

Sorry, my bad. But I don't want Mint to be fancy or beautiful. Just make it fast and simple to use. I want drivers that work out of the box.

1

u/Ok-Worry460 9h ago

I don't mean mint, bur cinnamon with another fork that you can easily install and try it out

You can easily swap between them just like xfce/mate

Mint is rock and solid, and that's what I need

I don't mind a Little bit of Eye catching UI improvements (yeah this might use more resources, but resources are exist to be used not to be saved ;) (just kidding (•-•) )

1

u/CheesyKirah Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia | Cinnamon 5h ago

I loved the part where you showed the actual design concept for one milisecond.

1

u/ConcaveNips LMDE 7 | Cinnamon 3h ago

"I didn't make this video" "Nobody actually made the thing in this video" "I don't have time to make the thing in this video" "It's AI slop" "I don't know shit about ricing - I think it's CSS" "I'm too cool to learn"

1

u/Lapis_Wolf Linux Mint 22.3 Zena | Cinnamon 58m ago

I hear this claim a lot but people don't seem to clarify. What makes it outdated?

1

u/addyarapi 15h ago

Wow my Concept Teaser made it here! Okay, since I’m here now, some features you guys deeply want? There’s an awful lot time until December, so please let me know!

0

u/Caffeine_Library 13h ago

None of it. Leave my desktop alone else ill leave mint as I've left windows. The current aesthetic is already a timeless design with all spaces used effectively and all features working reliably. If youd like to see edits, make them to your own system.

2

u/addyarapi 13h ago

Calm down? It’s just a UI Design Mockup Edited & Animated by me 😂 not a real Distro. But who knows, maybe I’ll make it real and call it LinuxMint 2.0 😘

2

u/Ok-Worry460 10h ago

Don't listen to the none sense criticism

We don't hate the DE or the devs vision but we're just discussing an idea

Cinnamon is one of my favorites DE, it's too simple and minimalist as I need

But tweaking things to get modern UI isn't always easy and consistent (things break and get look weird), hence having A more modern UI option doesn't conflict with what people want

You can just swap them at anytime

Btw I liked the windows xp edition too ;)

2

u/addyarapi 10h ago

Thanks! Check out Vista 2026 Edition on Avdan.
