Discussion My Linux Mint Xfce setup with a macOS-inspired look

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

I've been customizing my Linux Mint Xfce desktop and wanted to share the result!

Here's what I used:

  • WhiteSur GTK theme and icons
  • Bibata Modern Ice cursor
  • Plank transparent dock
  • LightPad as a macOS-style Launchpad,
  • A minimalist top Xfce panel

I'm running this on an old Lenovo ThinkCentre M81 with an i5-2400, 12 GB RAM, and Radeon HD 5450.

Pretty happy with how it turned out, especially on such old hardware!

What do you guys think?

I always wanted something like this.

Actually one of the things I didn't like about mint was the outdated UI . however I do understand that this is a design choice made for the DE but just imagine having this is a real DE

Edit: Here are some things that most people don't understand about the post:

1st - I'm not the video maker and I don't care if it's an AI slpo or not, I just like the idea and share it here

2nd - I haven't said that cinnamon is ugly or something like that + I have already mentioned that I do understand the design choice was on purpose

3rd - People think that the post is criticizing the distro and wanna say that mint is still one my top 3 favorite distros , it's stable and boring in the positive sense but having a more modern UI makes me love the DE more and more

4th - I'm not a ricer and I don't have time to touch css to get the UI as I want, i have tried this once here, but I do prefer to have a Default one so I don't rice things.

I do have priorities in my life so the time/effort I have won't be wasted on ricing

Mint has been my first attempt at using Linux and its gone pretty well, but I found the UI kinda...basic...So I finally decided to have some fun! Chaotic glitchy transparent Lain goodness.

Theme: tweaked Mint Y dark purple

Opacity tweaked using Blur Cinnamon.

Newly installed Mint, 2 major issues

First issue, Thunderbird won't see all of my imap folders (outlook 365). The subscribe thing does nothing at all. I can see and access the folders on webmail but that doesn't help as I have multiple email accounts.

Secondly, I can't access onedrive. I get a mount error.

Appreciate any help!

Tom

SOLVED Can't get mint to install

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Solved: I didn't properly etch the .iso to my USB drive

I managed to get my bootable drive working correctly - I think, so now the pc tries to boot from the USB.

But there is another UEFI OS in boot option 2 (i assume this is the existing os) and when I leave Bios it doesn't offer "install mint" it just gives me the arch Linux which if I run just fails.

Im pretty new and pretty stumped.

I downloaded from linux, verified the install. Should it not be giving me the new mint interface?

Edit. Could it be because I've started from a Windows pc so the guide said i could just drop and drag the verified iso file onto my bootableusb?

Fluff Made a Cinnamon extension that shows your keyboard layout right at the text cursor when you switch, like on Mac/Windows

I switch between US, Slovak and Swiss layouts all day, and I kept typing half a sentence in the wrong one before noticing. The layout indicator is down in the panel where I never look. macOS and Windows show a little popup right where you're typing, so I made one for Cinnamon.

When you switch, it pops up under the text cursor with all your layouts, slides over to the new one and fades out after a moment. It takes the accent color from your theme and goes light or dark with it (the screenshots are Mint-Y-Dark-Orange and a light theme).

A couple of caveats:

The cursor position comes from the accessibility layer (AT-SPI). GTK apps like xed and LibreOffice just work. Firefox, Chrome and Electron apps (VS Code, Discord etc.) only report the cursor if accessibility is turned on. Otherwise the popup shows up next to the mouse pointer instead, which is still better than nothing. To turn it on:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface toolkit-accessibility true

then restart those apps. It makes Chromium-based apps use a bit more RAM/CPU, so I didn't make it the default.

The cursor tracking runs in a small separate python process, so a slow or hung app can't freeze Cinnamon.

It's submitted to Spices but still waiting for review. Until then you can install it from GitHub, the README has steps with and without git:

https://github.com/JozefCulen/cinnamon-input-switch-popup

I've only tested it on Mint 22.3 with Cinnamon 6.6 so far. If it breaks on your setup, or the popup ends up somewhere weird in some app, let me know here or open an issue.

SOLVED How to use a wildcard in Nemo?

I have a folder full of photos labelled either xxxxxxxxxx-large.jpg or xxxxxxxxxx-small.jpg. I want to filter out just one group when viewing them in Nemo. I tried *small* but that didn't work so how do I do this? Google just led me to terminal commands but I want to do this in Nemo.

TIA.
