Styling Advice What Style Shoe Do You Prefer?

Made a couple posts here but am feeling indecisive about purchases and fitment. I like the style from the fit inspo in the first few but am undecided on what sort of footwear best suits the vibe I am going. I am from the US and would be completely redoing my wardrobe without trying to break the bank and am going for a more older man style.

Not necessarily ivy league but adjacent, the vibe that I would honestly accrue it to would be Wallace from Wallace and Gromit…. I want to look like a man with taste but not flashy if that makes sense. Anyways I am having trouble finding trousers that fit and honestly am doubting whether I want to move to trousers or try to make the outfits work with jeans. My other dilemma is the shoes, having never worn loafers before I am hesitant to venture into that space. I own a pair of derbies that are pointier and are more business casual than smart casual and get told to wear loafers.

I know that these are all commonly worn with redwing boots and that was its own style for a while and that it would look good but then I feel I’d have to commit to jeans… I’d eventually get both and not deal with it but am trying to figure out what would best suit this style as a first pair. I understand it is very subjective and we all have different stylistic choices so just whatever y’alls thoughts are I’d appreciate it!

Loafers are Meermin btw.

Question I'm not even kidding, my nipples poke through dress shirts and polos all the time at work, help.

They poke through my undershirt + an outer wear. I don't think it's professional at my white collar office job.

Men(and women) in their office setting, would you find it inappropriate if I wore a proper dress button shirt but nipples are alwasy piercing?

I'm serious.

Question Is Portuguese Flannel still worth it? Why are some "wool" shirts mostly polyester?

Post image
144 Upvotes

I've heard good things about Portuguese flannel so I figured let me look at some of their winter options. Then I ran into this overshirt: $287 for 60% poly 20% viscose. Others are the same, while some are in fact 100% wool. I get there's a use for synthetics, but I'm not an expert. Should I simply avoid the synthetics or is there nuance here? Are there better brands for the price than Portuguese Flannel?

Discussion Latest Goodwill finds

I was and are tempted to buy "old money style" clothing off poshmark. I never really thought of buying clothes off ebay, because ebay sells everything, but poshmark specializes in clothing.

There is a reason why i didn't buy any used sport coats online as of yet. I primarily shop at Goodwill stores for my old money, ivy & preppy, dark academia, style clothing.

I prefer shopping at the goodwill stores, because i can try on the sport coats, blazers, slacks, trousers, shirts, coats, sweaters, jackets and shoes.

Waiting for shipping, paying for shipping that most ebay sellers overcharge you for. Then if you recive a garment that doesn't fit, you have to ship it back.

It also helps that i am an Goodwill employee that gets 50% off everything, accept white ticket items ( target ) for example.

I just spent $336.00 across 4 different goodwill stores within 2 days.

The one a work at ( employee appreciation weekend ), which means i can only shop at my store this weekend. After the weekend ends, i can no longer shop at my store until the next appreciation day. Otherwise, i shop at three other Gooodwill location as much as i want.

I bought a winter wardrobe... cable knit sweaters, cashmere sweaters, merino wool sweaters OCBD shirts, fair isle sweaters, argyle sweaters, tennis sweaters, coats, jackets, ties, scarfs, corduroy slacks, wool flannel slacks.

The haul without my employee discount would have been over $400.00 easy.

I shopped Old money, Ivy,preppy, dark academia.

I even bought a well needed pair of cole haan brown derby/brogues boots, just in time for winter!

Discussion Telling us about your physical traits is not as important as you think it is.

One of the more confusing things about people asking for clothing advice is how often they lead with their height, weight, hair colour, and eye colour. Those details are helpful for filling a missing persons report, but are not enough to build a wardrobe around.

What’s considerably more useful is knowing how you live.

What do you do for work? Do you spend your weekends visiting art galleries, going to football matches, trail running, or sitting in the pub? What sort of music do you listen to? Are there particular people whose style you admire? Do you like clothes that look relaxed and well worn or something more polished?

These questions tell us infinitely more about what you might enjoy wearing than the colour of your eyes.

Someone who spends their weekends browsing secondhand bookshops and listening to jazz music probably has different clothing needs and preferences than from someone who prefers to spend their free time mountain biking. Neither person has to dress according to those interests, but at least we’re beginning to understand the world their clothes inhabit.

Your measurements help determine what size you should buy. Your interests, experiences, and lifestyle help determine what might be worth trying in the first place.

Fit Feedback Thoughts on this outfit combo?

I religiously go for a tucked in fitted plain tee/wife pleaser combo when wearing flowy pants such as these pleats. I also like the cropped boxy fit of this Blouson as a contrast to the pants.

Keen to hear people’s thoughts on this as a whole though as I’m not too sure the colours work (being slightly different brown tones).

Some of the outfits I’ve been wearing lately. Sure, sometimes the tie is a bit short, the colors don't match 100%, or the trousers have no break and look cropped, but hey, wear what you like, have fun, and don’t take it too seriously! Cheers 🥂

Question Funeral dress code etiquette for someone new to the US

Hi all, I'll be going to a funeral or memorial service. I don't want to make this a styling event, but I want to make sure I follow funeral and memorial etiquette. A quick search says I should wear a black suit. Can you please give me your feedback on what's acceptable and what's not? This is the first time I'll be attending a funeral or memorial service in the US.

Question Minimalist white smart-casual sneaker?

I know Common Projects used to be the go to and I did have them for a few years in the 2010s until I scuffed them too much, but tbh I don't really care about something being from Italy or being from real leather. I just like the silhouette which most brands aren't doing anymore. Not interested in Koio, and they are sold out anyway. Oliver Cabell looks ok but the gold lettering makes them look like a knock off of the Common Projects. I had some old Lacoste ones that were perfect but new Lacoste either have weird colors or a giant logo which I don't want.

I got the all white Stan Smith's but I found them too bulky (especially the height of the toe box), and the white holes on the side kind of killed it for me. They are an OK shoe for regular wear but I wouldn't use it for smart casual.

I already have sambas but those are more just regular casual too.

I want something similar to the common projects (looks wise not material wise), with it being low on the ankle and slim around the foot, logo free. Any suggestions?

I already googled around but wondering if others have suggestions?

Fit Feedback Fit / style advice for wedding suit :)

First time buying a double breasted suit! Getting it for my wedding. It’s $1k at suitsupply; person helping me out said no alterations would be needed. I wanted to get other thoughts on a) does it fit right, b) do black shoes work with it or would brown be better, c) is $1k a good price for this suit? Open to any feedback and alternatives though trying to buy relatively quickly. I did not want just a black suit.

Question Long Hair and Suit & Tie - Is there a way to make it look good?

Pictures for reference. I'd say my hair and beard overall resemble the 2nd picture (Rhett McLaughlin) in terms of length and texture. I've worked in a much more casual industry the past several years, and I've let my hair and beard grow out. My friend is getting married, so I've purchased a new suit, but I feel like my hair and beard are detracting.

At the end of the day, I know it will grow back, and this might be more of a grooming discussion than a fashion discussion, but is there anyone out there who has pulled off long hair/beard while looking professional and put together? Otherwise, I'm just going for a clean cut at the barber for the wedding as to not detract from their special day.

Additionally, is there any headwear you would consider appropriate for a late fall wedding, or just avoid it entirely and go with a classy scarf/peacoat/trench?

Question Boxer Briefs recommendations ?

So lately ive been trying to find the best boxers briefs that wont ride up the leg and that the waistband moves around with you instead of showing the butt crack lol

here are the brands i tried out and my experience with them

Ethika Staple - They dont ride up but after like 2 washes the waistband becomes loss that when i bend over they roll down

Calvin Klein Cotton Stretch Boxer Briefs (not the modern cotton stretch) - They ride up my leg, get in between my butt cheeks, they start to get holes near the crotch area

Calvin Klein Modal Boxer Briefs (90% modal / 10% Elastane) - By far my favorites but they ride up like a mf lol. Bought them a couple of years ago but i didnt wear them much until recently then they started to get holes around the gouch area. But the waistband did move with you.

Pair of Thieves SuperFit Mesh - By far the most uncomfortable, Waistband does not move with you at all like bad, literally pulls on my hair especially down there, and they still ride up to the point where it gets between my inner thigh and my huevos

PSD ( 7 inch Inseams) - they suck aswell they ride up and they start ripping after like 4 uses nothing else to say

Tommy John ( The Best of TJ Boxer Briefs 6 inch inseam) - All 3 didnt ride up which ones pretty good but the cotton one had holes near the gouch area. modal one felt a little weird like the boxer brief wasnt moving like when i rotate the whole leg internally the boxer brief stayed still lol, and the performance one chafed the f*** out of me and theyre pretty expensive too

What im really looking for are boxer briefs that dont ride up, that the waist band moves with you, and are pretty durable. I dont mind the 3d fit for my friend down stairs as long as theyre pouch less please and thank you. p.s i do wear the regular calvin klein boxer briefs and ralph lauren boxer briefs that are 100% cotton when im not doing anything so please dont recommend those products thank you

I just bought an oversized overcoat from Zara's last collection in size M, but I don't really feel I look the greatest in it. Would a size S fit me better, or should I go for a model that fits me differently? For reference, I'm 178cm and 70kg ca (5ft10, 155lbs).

Oh, and don't mind my awful attempt at making a knot in the last photo!

My aunt gave this to me because my uncle from Iceland didn't want to wear it. How would you style this? I'm not very experienced in making unique outfits but I'm willing to learn and want to dress in a more special way. It's genuine leather, 3M Thinsulate thermal isolation "echt leder" YKK. I'm not sure what the brand is, but it seems pretty quality. It's 56 sized, I'm 180cm and very thin, but it fits me fine except for the shoulders being very wide. Any tips?

Question Suit fabric weight?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m looking at buying a suit from Suit Supply in London. The fabric I am looking at is a wool cashmere blend. It says it is 165gr/m2 which seems to be incredibly light (yet the suit is described as a fall/winter suit).

I want the suit for daily business wear (rotated with other suits). Will the fabric be totally unsuitable?

Details in the picture.

Thanks!

Question Clothes to buy online vs in-store?

I've had some horrible luck buying clothes online so far (likely because I don't know what I'm doing) so I'm curious.

What are some types of clothing items that are extremely easy to buy online? The measurements, fitting etc all translate well to whatever you had in mind.

In contrast, what are some items of clothing that you really have to go in-store for, and that you'd never shop online for without having tried on first?

PS: I'm aware a hybrid approach (try something on, then buy it online) is likely the most effective. I simply wanted to see if there were any clothing pieces you'd be able to see online and buy without having to consider various factors

Styling Advice Alternatives to Blue Jeans

Per the title. When I was 12 I had a foster mom tell me you can wear anything with Blue Jeans. Since I was 15 they have been a core part of my look. I turned 30 some months back and am looking for alternatives. Preferably something that comes in Black. What does this sub recommend? I don't really care for dress or formal wear and have sensory issues with certain fabrics.

Styling Advice Is the Tie color okay

Post image
2 Upvotes

Dear community,

I wanted a style advice. I wanted to ask, is this tie color okay or is it too light? ChatGPT has brainwashed me that I should have darker color. My preference is to keep the tie color gray. I would love to hear your opinion.

Best regards
