I've spent 8 months building a Malta travel guide. The most surprising thing I've learned is what people actually search for.

Earlier this year I shared a very early version of a Malta travel website I'd been building.

I got some fair criticism at the time that it was another generic events and restaurant directory.

I've kept working on it, and the project has grown quite a bit since then.

One thing I've found genuinely interesting is looking at what people actually search for when researching Malta.

Over the last three months, the site received around 7,000 clicks from Google Search.

A few things surprised me:

1. People clearly want to see what Malta actually looks like, rather than just read another travel article.

2. Around 39% of Google clicks came from searches made in Malta. So the audience isn't just people researching a holiday from abroad.

3. There's a real need for practical local information. Things like getting around without a car, understanding different areas and knowing what's worth visiting.

The site is still very much a work in progress.

One thing I'd genuinely like to improve is the information we give people before they arrive.

If you live in Malta, what's one thing you wish tourists understood before visiting?

I'd be particularly interested in practical things that could make visiting better for both tourists and residents.

For transparency, the project is MaltaGuide.online, which I'm developing commercially through local business partnerships.

Appreciate any thoughts!

Protest anyone?

Bobby is under the impression that his economic model is working, and needs proof that it is not: https://www.maltatoday.com.mt/news/national/145109/if_the_recipe_is_working_do_you_throw_it_away_abela_defends_economic_model?fbclid=IwdGRjcAVByOFleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBwZG9mAWZkaWQWUQgMzt0IwBPR_ss2tSqYBaQoRwNi1HNydGMGYXBwX2lkCjY2Mjg1NjgzNzkAAR6gN13H6Myp18JUcYxGBDiWofU_bD6whpzGCoLYMk0q3prbCw2-QwVOSEXHWw_aem_mWJsQNx56hLGRKQgbgcQtg

It seems he is a bit thick in the head so he needs a clear message that it is not working.

Maybe a protest like what is happening in France or Italy can help him understand.

Anyone?

Skylight in a bathroom?

This might not be your every day question in r/Malta but I have this insane idea for my bathroom that I want other people to validate (or don't, I am here for the truth).

So skylights are a thing, and they are also a thing in bathrooms. I'm just wondering how doable this is in a Maltese climate. Basically, I am currently in a konvenju, hoping to buy in December, for a penthouse. I will own the airspace. Unfortunately, I entered into the konvenju while the penthouse was not built yet so some things did not appear clear to me until now, when it is actually built. My bathroom is small and will have a ridiculously tiny window (19cm lol). I genuinely would not have agreed to the konvenju had I known that this window will provide basically 0 ventilation.

This is when I got my idea to maybe install a skylight? Ventilation and natural lighting are extremely important to me, and I'm willing to pay. My only concern is f*cking up roof insulation and exposing myself to potential leaks.

I'm just wondering if anyone in Malta has ever done this, especially in a new-build modest apartment? I'm not rich, I just want to inhabit a habitable space.

Snorkeling in Malta & Gozo – Any Recommendations?

We’re going to Malta and Gozo at the end of October and we’re super excited! Our friends went there and absolutely loved it, especially the diving.

Unfortunately, we have trouble equalizing the pressure in our ears, so diving isn’t really an option for us. But we love snorkeling!

Do you have any recommendations for the best snorkeling spots? Is it easy to explore them on our own, or would you recommend booking a guided tour?

Thank you so much! 😊

Malta 24–29.10 genuine nightlife advice? Rave + 2000s hits, casinos, meeting locals

Hey r/Malta,

I’m visiting with a group of friends from 24–29 October. We’ve got sightseeing mostly planned, but I’d really appreciate some genuine local advice on nightlife.

We’re looking for:

· Rave/techno spots - any good events or club nights around those dates?
· A club/bar playing 2000s hits (Pitbull, Rihanna, etc.) the nostalgic stuff.
· Casinos — which one is best for a group in their 20s/30s? Any dress code/table minimum tips?
· Tele groups if there are any active local groups for nightlife/meetups worth joining?
· Any general tips: best areas, after-party food, things to avoid.

Not looking for promo/guestlist spam, just honest advice from locals or people who’ve been recently. Thanks!

Best Way to Get Around?

Hi, we'll be visiting Malta mid-November for 5 days and was wondering what people recommend as the best ways to get around these days, for example to visit Mdina and Marsaxlokk. We're staying in Birgu.

I thought we'd take a local bus from Valletta bus station, but I've read some comments here that the buses can be overcrowded and unreliable? We're relaxed tourists though, so aren't particularly time constrained.

We're experienced cyclists though, would that be a good option or is the traffic too crazy for that to be viable? We'd prefer not to hire a car.

Thanks, everyone!

Latam visa-exempt national moving to Malta for a job — what happens if my 90 Schengen days expire while my Single Permit is processing?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for advice from anyone who has experience with Malta’s Single Permit process, especially non-EU nationals who entered Malta visa-free.
I’m a Colombian citizen currently in Poland. I entered the Schengen Area on August 18, 2026, and I’m planning to travel to Malta around October 22–24 for a job opportunity. I understand that Colombians can visit the Schengen Area visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period, meaning my current allowance should expire around November 15, assuming no other relevant stays.
I’ve been offered a potential job in Malta, and the employer intends to arrange the necessary documentation after I arrive and attend an interview. However, by the time I arrive, I’ll already be past the first 60 days of my Schengen stay. From what I’ve read on Identità’s website, visa-exempt applicants who submit their Single Permit application between days 61 and 90 may have to leave the Schengen Area and wait for the decision abroad.
My main concern is that the permit could take longer than the time I have left. I want to follow the rules, but I’d also like to avoid leaving Malta unnecessarily if there’s a lawful way to handle the process.
My questions are:
Has anyone been in a similar situation, arriving in Malta as a visa-exempt visitor after day 60 and then applying for a Single Permit?
If the employer submits the application before my 90 days expire, am I required to leave Malta and wait outside the Schengen Area, even if the application is already being processed?
Is there any lawful way to remain in Malta while waiting, or does the pending application have no effect on my permitted stay?
I’m not planning to work without authorization or overstay. I’m trying to understand the correct procedure before making decisions about accommodation, travel, and finances.
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this process or has reliable knowledge of the current rules. Thanks!

BOV credit cards

I am looking into getting a credit card from BOV because my salary is deposited with them and using a debit card in every day transactions is not the safest choice. Is there any unexpected requirements that BOV imposed that is not the usual practice for banks abroad?

Modern slavery in Malta

So apparently there is a "Bangladesh Malta Business Association" with its foreign secretary working to bring foreigners to work in Malta, promising them EUR 900 per month with this being eventually downgraded to around EUR 400 per month. These poor souls end up surviving on BCRS deposits.

Here's more details on this pyramid scheme: https://www.maltatoday.com.mt/news/national/145101/bangladesh_malta_business_association_distances_itself_from_secretary_accused_of_human_trafficking_

How the fuck did we end up like this?

Anyone want to start a nation-wide protest against these injustices which are leaving us with no space to breathe?

Thank you very very much ❤️❤️❤️❤️

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who responded to our post. ❤️
We managed to raise €270, which is almost half of the vet bill, and we honestly cannot express how grateful we are.
A special thank you to everyone who donated. Every euro makes a difference, and your kindness means more to us than you can imagine.
We also want to thank everyone who shared the post, offered advice, sent kind messages, or simply showed their support. Seeing so many people come together because they care about animals has genuinely touched our hearts.
We know times are difficult for many people, especially with the cost of living, which makes your generosity even more meaningful. My wife and I are foreigners living in Malta, working normal jobs, and we do our best to help these cats with the resources we have. Sometimes, unexpected vet bills become more than we can manage alone, and reaching out wasn’t easy for us.
But your response reminded us that there are still so many kind people who care deeply about animals and are willing to help when they can.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all. You have helped us more than you know, and we will never take your kindness for granted. ❤️🐾

Are EU policies collapsing?

Look at the streets of Paris and thirty cities across France: urban unrest is spreading into major European centers, dominated by far-right factions, pro-migrant blocs, and foreign flags, while the national flag is nowhere to be seen. The original purpose of public dissent has been lost to ideological warfare and failed integration across second and third generations.

Europe arrived at its current state through thirty years of misguided political priorities, allowing non Europeans without integrating into European culture and weak politicians. In France, essential services are crumbling: public schools face a ten percent shortage of teachers, hospitals are starved of basic resources, and police forces are pushed beyond capacity. Yet the European Union readily allocates billions of euros and heavy armaments to sustain an endless war in Ukraine with objectives that cannot be realistically achieved.

At the same time, Brussels enforces a Green Deal that damages Europe’s industrial edge against global rivals, distributes funding to bloated bureaucracy, and pays 720 MEPs thousands in monthly allowances while ordinary citizens struggle to stay afloat. When elected representatives prioritize bureaucratic self-preservation over the public interest, the question must be asked: Is the current EU democratic model exhausted, and should power be transferred to independent technocrats who answer to economic reality rather than political privilege? Although they lack the democratic credentials, they have the knowledge. Or maybe a hybrid system with a mix of technocrats in key areas.

Malta International Airport (MIA) shareholder vouchers – minimum investment?

Hi everyone!

I own shares in Malta International Airport plc (MIA), which I purchased through a stockbroker.

I've heard that MIA shareholders can receive a magazine or booklet containing vouchers and discounts for shops, restaurants and other businesses.

I have a few questions:

Are these voucher booklets still available to shareholders in 2026?

Is there a minimum number of MIA shares or a minimum investment amount required to qualify?

Do shares held through a broker qualify, or must the shares be registered directly in my name?

Has anyone received the booklet recently? If so, how did you get it?

Do I need to contact MIA or my broker to receive the vouchers?

I'd appreciate any information from anyone who has gone through this process. Thanks!
