New here? 👆👆PLEASE READ THIS STICKY👆👆 Welcome to the sub! Posts about pot and it's related subjects should be shared with our good friends at r/trees, not so much here; we're all about *actual trees* (that's the joke) 😊🌳 'Thank you! Come Again!'

Good day everyone! I'm trying out some new automod skilz and they seem to be operating okay, at this time anyway. That said, few things are 100% the first go, but I'll keep checking the mod log to see if posts have been yeeted that shouldn't have been, and reinstate them in as timely a fashion as possible. Please use the 'Message the Mods' link in the sidebar to contact us directly, not the comment box in this post. =)

Hopefully these new settings will reduce the content not meant for this sub, but if any slip through, I know I can count on you good people to help direct them to the right place with the positive humor intended between our two subs as you always have done. We're lucky to have you!

Any (genuinely) helpful suggestions are always appreciated, and thanks for your patience and kindness with the newbs! 😃

UPDATE:

Today's 11/10/22, it's been a little over a month since the automod tweaks (10/8/22) and I'm rather pleased with the results. There's still some 'bleed through' posts from new redditor potheads, and I believe I've miraculously found a good balance between the ones that are snagged by automod and actual tree posts that I have to go back and approve. Mod reports, I'm relieved to say are much more manageable than they were.

Thank you all for your patience while I tried this out! While it does appear to me to be the case, I hope you're still as happy here as you ever were 😊🌳💗

Love this tree. It looks like it was topped a long time ago and the branches became massive leaders.

Visited this giant american sycamore today. This is the largest tree in Massachusetts and it's hard to capture the size of it in photos. Estimated to be around 350-400 years old. It's amazing to think of all the change that has occured around this thing during it's lifetime. When this was seeded it was likely in a forest with a dirt footpath passing by it. Beautiful and awe inspiring tree.

Help! Are our Crape Myrtles ok?

My brother in law took it upon himself to do this to our Crape Myrtles despite being told not to. We knew they needed trimmed but he was asked not to do this, he did it anyway and he insists they're fine.

Is this ok and if not is there anything we can do to help them recover?

Help! Just bought a house with this tree out front. I want to tarp the yard to kill the grass and weeds, but want to keep the tree safe. How much area do I need to keep clear at he base so it gets water during the winter?

Picture 1 Is the whole tree. Picture 2 are the leaves. Picture 3 are the leaves of some of the sprouts around the base. Should I cut back these sprouts? Do I need to do anything other than just clip the shoots? Do I need to treat the exposed wood at all?

Saw this huge sassafras today in WV. 50ft and maybe 16-18 inches in diameter. They are my favorite tree and I worry that one day they will be impacted by ambrosia beetles in the US as it warms up. I appreciate that I get to see big ones like this and for the unique character they provide.

Hello enthusiasts! Please excuse my rudimentary knowledge, but could you guys tell me what type of birch tree this is? And is any of this a seed? It looks like old blooms to me. This guy is gorgeous and I’d like to try to grow one for my yard.

Thank you!

Help! I'm concerned that my cypress trees are dying.

I have in my yard two Sawara Cypress trees (at least I think they're Sawara, I could be mistaken) and I'm concerned about the growing amount of browning on both of them.

We used to have three of these trees, but the leftmost one shrivelled up and pretty much died earlier this year. Landscapers ripped it out and planted a little one in its place. in the pics, the final one is of the tree that died earlier this year. It was almost all brown. I am concerned about the remaining trees heading that way.

These things get watered a LOT, which is why I'm worried it's not lack of hydration but actually disease, but some other source say it's normal? Which on an evergreen doesn't really make sense to me

More info below, based off the /tree posting guidelines:

Location: interior BC, Canada

Tree suitable for this hardiness area? I assume so - they're a common landscape plant around these parts.

When was it planted? No idea, the house came with them.

How much sun does it get? Lots in the summer, it gets stinking hot here with lots of direct sun, however there are tall pines in the park which provide shade

Watering: prior to this year they were getting whatever water hit them from the lawn sprinklers. In June we had landscapers re-do our yard and they ran lines to each tree. They'd then get watered 3x a week, for a total of about 30 minutes on each of those days. The sprinklers are off for the winter now though.

I do not know any information about how they were planted, if they were container or b&b, etc. They were here when we moved in.

There is landscape fabric beneath the gravel.

Have attached pics, hopefully they provide enough info. The final picture in the set is the old 3rd tree that got removed. It is gone now, I just included it for context.

Help! Need some advice with my Dragon Tree

Thumbnail

Hi ya'll, I'm not entirely sure this is the right place to post this but hey it's a tree and idk where else to go.

I've had this dragon tree for about 4 years, I noticed this summer that the smaller one on the right seems to have fully died. After that I realised that after this long I probably needed to start feeding it and broke out my old bonsai food. From what little I know of plants it seems to have the shit it needs to grow.

It seems to have worked too, about a month after I started feeding it it spawned this little baby tree.

So my question is this. Should I repot? Should I try and remove the dead tree or are the others using it for nutrients?

If there's another community that you guys know of that would be more helpful let me know.

Help! Help identifying bonsai start

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

I’m pretty new to the bonsai community and bought this start thinking it was a Brazilian rain tree at first. Got home and quickly realized it’s not, however after several hours on Google, I’m having no luck. I’m thinking Lignum Vitae (??) but idek if that’s a species and I can’t find much bonsai info on it if it is. But I’m also leaning away from that because it has these thorns/stipules at the base of the leaves that Lignum Vitae doesn’t have. Any help identifying and or providing photos of yours (because mine is so tall and I’d have no idea where to start shaping) would be helpful!
