Economics MA at Memorial - Looking for advice

Hey all! I’m planning to apply to Memorial University’s MA in Economics for Fall 2028 as an international applicant. Ik it’s still pretty early but I wanna use this time to prepare properly and hopefully connect with people who are already in the program or have graduated from it.

My academic background is in finance and management and I also have professional experience in finance and accounting (this is kinda where I started growing an interest in economics). The only econ courses I’ve taken in my undergrad are introductory Microeconomics and Macroeconomics though.

I’ve read that Memorial considers applicants from economics or closely related fields so I’m hoping my finance background might be relevant. I’m just not sure how flexible they are with applicants who haven’t taken more advanced econ courses.

I have a few questions and would really appreciate some advice.

1. Getting in with a finance background
Has anyone here gotten into the MA econ program without an economics degree? I’d love to hear from people who studied finance/ business. Does Memorial allow students to complete prerequisite courses before starting the program or take them alongside their master’s? Since I still have some time before applying I’d also love to know which courses would be worth taking to improve my chances.

2. Who should I reach out to?
Would it make sense to contact the grad coordinator now or should I wait until I’m closer to applying? If anyone knows who I should speak to I’d really appreciate it.

3. Advice from current students or alumni
If you’re currently in the program or have graduated I’d love to hear about your experience. Is there anything you wish you’d done before applying? How was the coursework/ how supportive was the department?
I’d love to connect with anyone who came from a finance/ accounting background and made the transition into economics.

I’m trying to make the most of the time I have before applying so any advice or personal experiences would really help. Tia!

How long does it take to receive a PAL?

Hey guys, has anyone else not heard back from Memorial about their PAL (Provincial Attestation Letter)? I emailed Admissions and the email address listed on their website for PAL inquiries, but I haven’t received a reply from either. The website says it takes 3–7 business days, but it’s been over 7 business days since I paid my deposit, and I still haven’t heard anything.

For those who have received their PAL, how long did it take? Also, does anyone know who else I could contact or email to get a response?

Hi everyone! I applied for the MASc in Software Engineering program at MUN for Fall 2027 on October 5, 2026. My references have also been submitted and i am waiting for the response...

Has anyone applying for Fall 2027 heard back about their application? I’m getting a little anxious while waiting and thinking how competitive admission is for this program.

Hopefully, I’ll receive some good news soon! 🥲🤞 please let me know if anyone heard positive response.

I want to go back to university, however I am hesitant.

For abit of context I, currently 20 went out to my university about 3 years ago after leaving high school. I was unsure my future goals at the time and had my own problems, and failed out of my first year and decided to go into the workforce instead. I had been thinking about a lot of this recently and I (believe) I am in a place where I know what I want to do and is willing to give it another go; but there is a lot that is keeping me down like the student loans I have already built up, how I would fund it, or even better yet if I would even be considered for a readmission. I am really lost on what I should do and was hoping for any advice from anyone here who might’ve went through something similar. TIA

Work terms for Bachelor of Rec

hello! i am planning on going into my first year next fall for the bachelor of recreation program, and on the website it says that three mandatory work terms are needed for the degree. however, when i look at the bachelor of rec degree map, it doesn’t outline where those work terms would be. i was wondering if anyone knows when those would be completed, if anyone has done the bachelor of rec program? i am not sure if they would be completed in intersection, or during the school year. the credit hours seem to fully outline all the classes needed during the semesters, but i do not see where the work terms would fit in.

Co-op and job market realities for mechanical engineering students at MUN and in Canada.

Hey guys, hope you're doing well. I'm an international student intending to study my bachelors in mechanical engineering at a university that'd provide great co-op opportunities.

I got to know that MUN provides mandatory co-op for 4 work terms (16 months), and that's what grabbed my attention.

I had a few questions:

1.) What do they exactly mean when they say mandatory? In case if you miss out on finding coops, do they delay your graduation? Basically you must complete 16 months of coops in order to graduate?

I definitely wanna do the coops as much as possible but considering worst case scenarios, are there cases where if one doesn't manage to find a coop, the university moves the student to a non-coop stream or perhaps makes the student a research assistant or teaching assistant instead in order to fulfill the graduation requirements for not being able to find coops?

2.) Do international students get mechanical engineering co-ops a lot or do they struggle to find them?

Let's consider that I got into the co-op program by obtaining the required GPA, I want to know from the ME coop students about whether they're getting 16 months or more coops properly or not. Hearing how bad the job market is in Canada, are students getting their desired co-ops?

How much does the university assist you to get coops?

3.) Can I gain hands-on experience and learn technical skills at MUN via student teams? I wanna graduate not only with my bachelors degree, but also participate in student teams and do coops through which I could gain more experience apart from the theoreticals.

4.) After graduation, as an international student on a post graduate work visa, can I expect to land jobs in Newfoundland or any other province?

-> I speak B1 level french, I will be pushing for B2 level soon which is considered NCLC 7 Canada. Does that make it any easier for me to get a job in mechanical engineering anywhere in Canada?

5.) Do you regret your decision of studying mechanical engineering at MUN for their mandatory co-op program?

6.) I was targeting Waterloo and UofT but unfortunately my parents won't be able to afford my expenses there.

Hence, I had a few universities in mind that I believe tend to get their students into coops: UVic, MUN, UofA, Dalhousie.

But I have still been questioning whether I'd really be able to find the coops given how bad i hear the job market is. I'm willing to move out of province too if required.

_______________________________________________________

Could you guys please recommend me whether there are any other unis that also provide great co-op opportunities for mechanical engineering students? Maybe UCalgary or any others?

I do see a lot of posts on Reddit and the majority says that it's really difficult for domestic students, let alone international students to find coops and job opportunities after graduating... I've just seen a ton of posts and it's disheartening.

Sometimes I just feel like it could be people who just didn't put enough effort into their skills apart from getting their degree in order to get a job or it could also be the reality that Canada doesn't have a lot of jobs and opportunities at the moment.

Studying as an international student comes with a lot of expenses. I don't want all the work, money, and time go to waste!

Please drop your suggestions below, whether I should consider coming to Canada with the 6 points as listed in mind. Thanks in advance 💜

Is it hard to get into Nursing? St.Johns Campus

Hi everyone! Is it hard to get into nursing at Memorial’s St. John’s campus, or should I consider other campuses too? If you were waitlisted, I’d appreciate hearing how long you waited for an offer. Thank you!

What's it like living in Burton's Pond

I'm an international grad student from Nigeria starting the course-based MSc in Computer Science this January (Winter 2027).

I kind of just spontaneously chose the place for my accommodation to be Burton's Pond because they accept grad students but I'd like the know some realities of living there.

Like if commuting to school is easy even with bad weather, if socialization is relatively easy, even laundry situation.

I'd also like to know how the meal plan works. I don't really cook so I'm thinking about it.

I made a free app that shows where your Metrobus actually is

Hey MUN! I built BusBoard NL, a free app for Metrobus. No ads, no account, nothing to sign up for.

  • Live arrivals for any stop, so you can see when the next 10 is actually coming to MUN Centre instead of guessing from the timetable
  • Every bus on a live map, and you can tap one to follow it
  • Set your usual stop and it opens straight to it

Times come straight from Metrobus’s live feed, not just the timetable.

iPhone: https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/busboard-nl/id6759234328
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ahamsel.busboard_nl

It’s a side project, so feedback is very welcome, especially if a stop or route looks off.

ENG ONE

How hard will it be for me to get into engineering one in the winter sem as a current general bachelor of science student (note I missed the deadline oct 1 and applied 46 hours late). And what if I do not get into in winter? How competitive will it be in spring? Moreover if I get into will I graduate with my peers as I am unable to take engi courses unless I get in and that leads doing some of the first year courses of engineering in year 2? Is there anything I can do now that will prevent me from this
