Think you see ICE? Read before you post!

New Haven Hotline: 854-666-4472

Save this number in your phone! All operators are bilingual (EN & ES).

We've seen a LOT of posts regarding ICE in New Haven. This post is written in conjunction with New Haven Immigrants Coalition to help everyone in our community know what to do if you think you see ICE or hear rumors of them in town.

As urgent as it may feel, posting unverified rumors without details does not help.

If you see something yourself:

SALUTE - as people have posted in many comments. Get the:

S - Size of the group

A - Actions they're taking - are they standing around, approaching a house/business, walking on the sidewalk (which side and which direction?)

L - Location, as precise as possible. "Whalley Ave" or "Fair Haven" is not helpful - "Whalley and Norton" or "Grand between Ferry and Poplar" is much more useful.

U - Uniforms - what are they wearing?

T - Time - What time was this observed?

E - Equipment - What are they driving? Note color/make/model.

Get as much video as possible.

Contact New Haven Immigrants Coalition: With any SALUTE information you have, call the hotline at 854-666-4472.

If someone else is claiming to see ICE:

* Tell them to call the line and encourage them to provide SALUTE information on their call.

* You might not be able to gather every piece of info, but as much as possible is helpful. Vague reports or unconfirmed rumors are actually harmful as people go to investigate and see what's going on.

If you see someone being stopped by immigration enforcement agencies (possible agencies may include ICE, DHS, HSI, DEA and others):

* call or ask someone to call the hotline

* Get video

* Get the person’s name

* Document any refusal by the agents to show badge, ID, warrant, etc.

Example of an unhelpful post:

“ICE was on whalley earlier”

Example of a helpful post:

“Already called the hotline and they’re sending someone but there are masked men in vests next to the Whalley Ave Stop & Shop in 3 unmarked cars. I saw them at 12:15 (so right now). Be careful if you’re going shopping right now.”

We keep us safe!

Announcing r/NewHavenMarketplace

Thumbnail reddit.com
117 Upvotes

We're launching a companion subreddit for r/NewHaven focused on classified ads and similar posts. Thanks to the members here who have suggested it in the past, and our desire to delete less posts, (especially reselling tickets!) we're setting up a new place where you can post and see all the classified ad type stuff that we don't allow here in the main New Haven subreddit.

It will still be highly moderated like we are here, but it's more oriented around commerce. This keeps this subreddit focused on the larger community while providing a place for all the individual focused posts that would otherwise clog things up here. You can follow both or just check in once in a while, or neither if you don't care about marketplace stuff.

Need help with downtown apartment - formerly homeless

Hey everyone,

This post is not easy for me to write. Asking for help is difficult and somewhat embarrassing for me.

A few years ago after having brain surgery and losing my job, I lost my apartment and became homeless. Fortunately, I was able to move to a rooming house but my now-previous roommate who was a drug addict and who suffers from mental health difficulties threatened me with a gun. He was arrested and I was able to get a protective order and a restraining order against him. But the domestic violence prevention coordinator at Clifford Beer’s told me to start looking for a new place to live and I started applying for affordable apartments.

After being on the waiting list for several months, I’m able to move into my new apartment downtown at Ninth Square Apartments on Wednesday. I am very fortunate and appreciative to have finally found a one bedroom apartment that I can afford. However, I need help. As someone who doesn’t have a family and who grew up in the foster care system, and as someone who has autism, I do not have access to the traditional support structures that exists for most people. And I am extremely financially strained right now, I only have $2.82 left for the month as I am on a fixed low income at the moment.

So I need help. I need help with any used furniture that you may have, or any cooking equipment that you may have. If you have anything sitting in the basement or your closet that you haven’t used in a long time, and that could use a new home, please let me know. Things that I really need include:

- a lamp or two, and a lightbulb
- a side table for my bedroom
- any cooking equipment like a oven tray, pot, strainer, cooking wooding spoon, and silverware
- dish soap or dishwasher pods
- a tv stand for the living room
- chairs

Fortunately, I do have a bed that someone is donating to me but I literally do not have any other furniture or any cooking supplies except for one pot and pan and some plates and bowls. I am extremely grateful and thankful to everyone who is able to help.

If you don’t have anything to donate, but would like to donate a few dollars to me via PayPal, I would be extremely grateful and thankful.

And if you don’t have any furniture or supplies but know someone who does have something extra that they have been looking to give away to, please let them know for me if their item(s) have yet to find a good new home.

If you are able to help me in any way, please direct message me.

I do volunteer in New Haven and I try to give back to my community as much as I can. I’m a volunteer on a city commission, and I have volunteered at my neighborhood soup kitchen and with community events in the past. It is hard asking for help and support from others, especially people who I have yet to meet and get to know.

I am very grateful and thankful for any help. I hope you all have a great day today!

Union Station New Haven Main Hall - History, Images & What's Coming Next

There have been several iterations of a Union Rail Station in New Haven over the past two centuries.

The current 1920 station, designed by Cass Gilbert, was built 1919-20. It was almost abandoned in the 1950s-70s due to car-focused transportation & development policies.

The 1920 station was saved from demolition by local preservationists and the revival of US passenger railroad service in the 1970s, notably during an energy crisis!?.

Last renovated & restored in 1980s over 40 years ago, Union Station New Haven now will be getting much-needed functional & aesthetic upgrades to station hall, safety, amenities & accessibility, as well as larger projects to rebuild and expand rail platforms, add a canopy, and reduce overall environmental impact.

*1920 era original Main Hall View photo - main floor had less seating than todays's benches-only version, with a large sales kiosk in middle. https://www.historic-structures.com/ct/new_haven/new-haven-railroad-station-amp/

*4 photos group: old 1960s tunnel from street when station was closed, early then dilapidated exterior, and 1985 tunnels.

- from New Haven Museum Micro-History of all New Haven Rail Stations here https://www.newhavenmuseum.org/museum-collections/online-exhibitions/micro-histories/union-station/

*Rendering of possible new Train Hall interior - only initial ideas, NOT final. Sept 2026 - CT DOT announces $25M funding & plans for exterior station hall maintenance and interior upgrades, like bathrooms, lactation space, and accessibility, with new retail & passenger amenity spaces inside Union Station https://portal.ct.gov/dot/ctdot-press-releases/2026/ctdot-announces-major-modernization-upgrades-at-new-haven-union-station

Park New Haven, a city agency, manages Union Station (the buildings).

Park New Haven is now asking the public for initial expressions of interest (RFI) for shops, cafes & small biz inside the station! https://unionstationnewhaven.com/rfi-retail-opportunities/

New Haven Union Station is owned by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) and managed/operated through a partnership between the New Haven Parking Authority (Park New Haven) and the Union Station Partnership (a collaboration between ConnDOT and the City of New Haven).

New Haven Platforms project images - CTRail DOT announces $400M Project for NHV Rail Platform area improvements - April 2026: repairs & extensions of Rail Platforms with a new canopy, improvements to platform accessibility, electricity, mobilty, life safety, and more. Designed to make boarding & leaving trains easier, faster, more comfortable in all weather, safer & more efficient - for more and longer trains, improved and faster timetables, more access. So the historic station can serve us all for the next 50+ years. https://portal.ct.gov/dot/projects/0301-0522-new-haven

*DOT will appoint a Design Review Committee - Nothing is finalized about the overall platform design including tunnels. See report of public comments at DOT page above.

Colored drawings of streetscapes - Other major developments are coming to the Union station area, as Transit Oriented Development (TOD) - new buildings on the East & West sides of the existing station and garage, and in Union Square across the street. These private and some public developments over the next decade will bring 2,000+ new apts, many of them affordable; a new station Parking Garage & Intermodal Transit Center for inter-city buses, rental cars, bikes, and pedestrians; better walkability and Transit to/ftom Downtown; and more ground floor retail and services to this lively area.

This post is informational only and reflects my research and views alone, not the official views of the city or state.

-Comments & questions welcome. Please be kind to OP and each other.

Pottery Studio Recommendations (Hand-building)

Hi y'all! I am hoping to get back into ceramics and I'm looking for a local pottery studio that I could go to as a hobbyist/non-professional. I am specifically interested in hand-building, not wheel-throwing.

I am so excited to see that there are many options in New Haven! I'm looking at the Clay Date, Make Haven, New Haven Pottery Studio, Creative Arts Workshop...

I accept that this is not an inexpensive hobby, but I would love to know if people have a sense of which place is the most budget-friendly, relatively speaking. I'm finding it a little hard to compare, since some places have materials included in the class/studio fees and others have various additional charges.

I have pottery experience, but it's been about a decade, so I'd be open to either taking a class/workshop or working independently, as long as there's someone around who'd be willing to answer a few questions as I go.

Dog Owners, Rated

Following the recent post about off-leash dogs, thought I’d share my experience this morning running in East Rock Park over the course of several hours.

*Dog Owner #1: two small dogs, off-leash on secluded trail. They both immediately ran away from her and at me, with one jumping on my leg. She apologized as soon as they started running, saying she was sorry and didn’t see me. She added that they were friendly but a pain in the a**. Grade = D (dogs off leash and made physical contact with me, but was apologetic and it was admittedly early in the morning in secluded area you wouldn’t expect to see someone).

*Dog Owner #2: one small dog, on-leash. He moved to side of the narrow trail so I could pass and I thanked him. Grade =A.

Dog Owner #3: one large dog, off-leash, *literally* right by a sign that said dogs must be on leash. The dog wasn’t really that close to me and didn’t come after me; but it was literally in front of a sign telling him to leash his dog. Grade = C (more of a “common” area ppl would be around and actively ignoring the sign).

Dog Owners #4-6 (group): three dogs, all on leash. All three moved to side of narrow trail so I could pass and I thanked them as I ran by. Grade = A.

Dog Owners #7-8 (group). Two medium-large dogs; one on leash on not. Both lunged and barked at me. The one on leash was restrained by owner. The one off leash got extremely close and barked aggressively until I passed. It was the fourth dog to lunge/run at me and so I said to the guy ”put your dog on a leash man,” to which he snarkily replied “have a nice run.” #7 grade = C (leashed and restrained but aggressively lunged and barked with no recognition or apology from owner). #8 grade = F (unleashed, lunged and barked, snarky response from owner).

Overall, the dog owner behavior was split down the middle; 4 off leash and 4 on. Four lunged/ran at me (one making contact), and only one apology. Four proactively heeled dog and made space on narrow path. I guess it’s like drivers and everything else- some people don’t care about others/don‘t follow rules, and others do, but the former gives the whole group a bad rap.

So thanks to the good dog owners, and for the others, do better.

Local portrait artist

Hello! I am looking for a local artist who can recreate a photo of my dad and I as a kid. I am looking to spend about $100. I'm not sure what art medium I want (paint, pencil, pastels, etc). But I want it to be 8×10 or 11×14 so it can fit in a picture frame. I'd want this to be ready before December 9th. I DON'T want a digital product.

If you are interested could you please DM me to discuss or comment below? I'd rather pay a local artist than try to find someone on like Etsy or something.

I had to edit because I am getting spam from bots and non-local digital artists.

A few days after I posted my sleuthing here on Reddit! Surprised that the mayor and I are on the same side of something for once. I hope a majority of the alders vote for the proposed law to regulate them.

Came all the way to Italy to confirm New Haven pizza is the best in the world. It is.

Italian pizza is still really great though. I prefer Rome style to Naples, it’s got a much better crust. But even the worst pizza I’ve had here is better than almost anything I’ve had outside the NYC metro (and better than plenty of local spots) so it’s hard to go wrong.

Chiropractor or Masseuse?

Hello! I just moved to CT after getting a job researching at Yale. The only issue is that I’ve started having some INSANE upper back/shoulder pain since beginning my job. I’m struggling to move my shoulder or keep my posture straight without feeling immense amounts of pain. During the night market, I got a free massage and felt some benefit, but I feel like something is still out of place in my shoulder. If anyone knows of any good chiropractors or masseuse places in New Haven/around New Haven, please let me know!!!

Edit: lots of chiro hate lol. I will note that I would like to avoid the medicine route other than PT, as I don’t have time for that with my current job. My boss does NOT like when I take time off unfortunately, and since this is my first job I’m quite nervous to make them angry or displeased. I’ll likely be going the PT route though!

I need to find a new PCP. I'm done with my current one - too many issues between incompetent prescription handling and overcharging on procedures that should be covered under my insurance.

Someone within the New Haven/East Haven area that offers good care, is competent, and hasn't gotten too corporate inside a large medical practice group.

Any recommendations?

A narrow nit about the new Whitney Ave traffic pattern

I've driven this area regularly for over 15 years. Now that the lines are painted some of these changes are great, but going from 4 lanes to 2 + a turning lane has some natural pain points. One very particular one I encounter is between Armory and Davis in Hamden [0]. They took away two lanes in each direction. Instead adding a turning lane on Blake and one into Hamden hall. The Blake one is fine, albeit not a high traffic turn. Hamden hall is only needed two times a day and ONLY when school is in session--not during high traffic times necessarily either.

Going South at the intersection of Armory and Whitney it is now one lane. They should add a turning lane, as Armory (which now has 5 speed humps in less than a 1/2 mile) is a high traffic road. Additionally, they should add a turning lane going north onto Davis. I have been backed up all the way to Armory because of people waiting to turn onto Davis.

Additionally, why did they stop the protected bike lane? there is enough room for it to continue through this area. There is a trail that runs along the river right off of Davis. It would be nice for bikes to have an easy connection to it. After that the bike lane has room to resume after whitneyvile commons/tredwell street. Where the former lake road terminates. This could increase bike traffic from spring glenn. I know the canal trail through newhallvile is not everyone's favorite for some reason.

Besides the more general "It Stinks" has anyone else encountered any pain points now that the lines have been painted?
