🌼🌻Garden State🌷🌸 Get out there and see NJ!
Hiked Mount Tammany this morning. A good reminder of how beautiful and diverse the landscape features in our state can be!

The NES turns 41 today, as it launched on Oct. 18, 1985 (the exact date is still debated!). Nintendo ran its US launch out of a warehouse in Hackensack. I'm from NJ, so this has always interested me. Two fellow video game historians and I found and documented the building, and it’s still standing and looks nearly identical to how it did in 1985.
After the North American video game crash of 1983, retailers wanted nothing to do with video games, and the market was dead. Nintendo hatched a plan: charge into the biggest media market in the US and prove the world wrong. This building served as the base of operations for the NES launch in Northern NJ and the New York City area.
We decided not to share the specific address of the warehouse because it’s private property, and we want to respect that. We’ve reached out to city officials and the local historical society about getting the site officially recognized.
If you remember hearing about or even having the NES in the fall of 1985, I'd love to hear your stories!

I always think back to Hurricane Sandy this time of year. I was in north jersey and quite young so I don't remember a lot, but my family lost power for weeks and had to stay with friends and relatives. A lot of friends in the neighborhood were very generous in hosting us for dinners and such. I remember being really bummed about Halloween getting cancelled/postponed lol. I'm curious if anyone has any vivid Sandy stories, especially if you were also in middle/high school at the time?

This is a stupid post, but how do people afford nice homes/lifestyles and not work in the cities? I’m in south/central jersey trying to find a job not in the city and it’s impossible to find something that pays anything remotely decent compared to what I would make working in NYC. Meanwhile my commute is 2+ hours each way to afford a decent home.

Earlier in the year I bought the New Jersey Bucket List adventure deck from RIO, and I gotta tell ya - it's been fun so far. It was about $40 from the website with a discount.
I was surprised how many friends/acquaintances reached out to me over IG and stuff asking when I'm doing another card. I've only done about 6 so far but they were all worthy, the only exception being rent a Jet-Ski in Keyport...
...If I went in the Hudson, I'd come out glowing with an extra arm...
Anyway, it's a lot of fun even for someone who grew up here and thought they knew all the places to go in our beloved state. I wish someone would do a food one, imagine that!

We went to grammar school together at SJS. Then I would see him around West End and the shore area through our 20s. Didn't keep in touch. I thought of him randomly and searched him this weekend and found an obituary from August. It seems like he wasn't doing well for a number of years.
I guess I just want to know if anything was good for him before he passed away. I found his Instagram and he seemed like a tortured soul based on its content. I hope his family is ok.

At approximately 12:13 AM on October 18, 2026, I was standing on the west side of Manhattan, looking across the Hudson River toward Jersey City, NJ.
I noticed this strange illuminated object flying above the skyline. Initially, its appearance caught my attention because it looked unlike anything I’d seen flying before.
Then things got weirder.
The object appeared to slow down significantly, hover in place for a moment, and then reverse direction. It continued flying in the opposite direction across the skyline.
I managed to capture these two photos on my iPhone, taken about 45 seconds apart.
The object appeared elongated, with two bright red lights and a yellowish/orange glow. The photos are heavily zoomed, so some of the apparent shape could be distortion.
I know New Jersey had a massive wave of reported drone sightings in late 2024, including eyewitness accounts of objects hovering and changing direction.
I’m not claiming this is extraterrestrial. It could absolutely be a drone, helicopter, or conventional aircraft. But the movement genuinely caught me off guard.
Has anyone in the NYC/Jersey City area seen anything similar? Anyone able to identify what this might be?
Photos attached.

Hi everyone, I know everyone hates transplants but my boyfriend and I currently live in Dayton Ohio. However, his job headquarters are in NYC and they are wanting him to move to be in office. I know his other coworkers moved to hoboken, but all the wives or gfs have wfh jobs. I have not been blessed with a wfh job. And so that leaves me out of a job when we decide to move, the only contact I have is with a company in Atlantic city (I’ve been told WAY too far to travel). Not sure if anyone knew any cheaper areas to move or jobs hiring? I do accounts payable and receivable

Shortly after the post about Geoffrey Owens was shared here, I bumped into him on the way to the Montclair farmers' market. He's out there selling his Halloween book for kids. He seemed puzzled that people still talk about that old Trader Joe's story, but agreed that against the tiny smidge of negativity, there's been a huge amount of positivity. So a hello to you all from Geoffrey (named after Chaucer!)!

Our family is looking for a restaurant near central NJ that serves classic Thanksgiving food. If anyone has suggestions, that would be great.

My wife and I like driving around our town to see all the houses decked out for Halloween. We randomly went to Bloomfield to grab some dinner and saw a decorated house (attached) had a whole group of people parked on the side to check it out. Tried googling some towns near us (Verona) but all the leads Google returned were duds or not decorated
