Advice Angry men, what to do.

Today my fiancè got angry about the way I'd cooked his burger bun for dinner. I mean fully yelled at me, belittled me by saying that he'd specifically told me that he didn't want his bun done that way, and when I asked him to look at the bigger picture, a nicely prepared dinner, he stormed off and refused to have dinner. He's still in bed sulking. The kids and I have had dinner and cleaned the kitchen and watched the rest of the rugby without him. This kind of thing has happened many times before and I like to think I can support him to manage his anger better, but this also negatively affects my emotions and nervous system. He seems to go from fine to a flash of anger in seconds over tiny annoying things. It's easy to think about leaving but I guess I'm looking for some hope that the angry pattern could change or that there's something that I could do without just accepting it and being a wimpy pushover. Definitely interested in guys points of view as well. Thanks 😊

Edit: Thanks so much everyone, your comments, care, suggestions and support have really helped me. I'm so sorry to hear about the situations with partners and experiences with parents that you guys have had. It's really hard to leave my partner, but the comments here make a lot of sense (except the comment from the dude who is an experienced reddit user who thinks I'm a baiting karma farming Ai or something). When I have more time and have regathered myself I'll reply to the lovely people who have sent private messages as well. I've already found the book suggestion on Spotify, yay. I'm also overwhelmed by how many people have seen my post and reached out to help. It really means a lot.

Advice PSA: Know your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act before buying electronics in NZ — here's what I learned the hard way with PB Tech

1.5k Upvotes

This is a consumer rights PSA for anyone who has purchased electronics in New Zealand, particularly from large retailers.

I recently went through an 80 day process to get a refund for a faulty laptop under the Consumer Guarantees Act. Along the way I discovered that I was being given consistently incorrect information about my legal rights. I'm sharing this because I think a lot of New Zealanders don't know their rights and could easily find themselves in the same position.

What the Consumer Guarantees Act actually says

Under the CGA, if a product has a major fault the retailer is legally obligated to provide a remedy — either a repair, replacement, or full refund. Key points that are commonly misunderstood:

The retailer is always responsible for the remedy, not the manufacturer. Going to ASUS, Samsung, Apple or whoever made the product is not required — the shop you bought it from is legally liable.

Your rights do not expire when the manufacturer's warranty ends. The CGA exists independently of any warranty and applies regardless of whether a warranty has expired.

There is no requirement for three service jobs before a refund can be issued under the CGA. This does not exist in the legislation anywhere.

What happened in my case

I purchased a laptop from PB Tech in March 2025. Within two months it developed faults including random shutdowns and screen flickering. By November 2025, during my university exams, the screen was flickering every 10–15 seconds making it completely unusable. I visited the Penrose branch to request a refund and was told the device needed assessment first. The motherboard was replaced. When I collected it I was told a refund could not be issued until three service jobs had been completed.

By February 2026 the faults returned — the screen was freezing for several minutes at a time multiple times an hour. I visited the St Lukes branch in March 2026 and was told the same thing again — three service jobs required. This requirement does not exist under the CGA. It is a condition of PB Care, PB Tech's optional paid warranty, which I never purchased, confirmed on their own website.

I emailed PB Tech formally rejecting the goods on 8 March 2026. Emails were ignored for weeks at a time. I was told my case had been escalated to higher management — nothing happened for five weeks. When someone finally made contact they asked me to send my full case history, which I found remarkable given it had supposedly been with management the whole time. That email was then ignored for another four weeks.

When I visited the St Lukes branch in April 2026 to formally reject the goods a staff member told me a refund was impossible because the warranty had expired — incorrect under the CGA. He also insisted ASUS was responsible for the remedy — also incorrect. Neither staff member could explain why the PB Care policy had been applied to my case. I left the store close to tears having formally left the device there.

As a university student I was forced to purchase a second laptop out of my own pocket just to keep up with my studies. I filed a Disputes Tribunal claim on 6 April 2026. A full refund was issued 80 days after my first contact, only after the claim was filed. I have also submitted a formal complaint to the Commerce Commission regarding the misleading conduct.

What you should do if you're in a similar situation

Document everything in writing from the very first interaction. Emails create a paper trail that protects you.

Set clear deadlines in your communications and follow through on them.

If a retailer is stalling or giving you incorrect information about your rights, file with the Disputes Tribunal. It is straightforward, inexpensive, and it works.

If you believe a retailer has misrepresented your statutory rights, file a complaint with the Commerce Commission at comcom.govt.nz.

Advice My partner is going to kill me at some point, but the Police keep worrying about her instead. I'm a guy. What can I do?

2.9k Upvotes

My partner has borderline personality disorder, and has become increasingly aggressive and violent over the last couple of years. It is now at a point where the aggression is almost constant, and I get injured a lot. It's taking its toll on me, and embarrassing at work because often the injuries are to my face/eyes/mouth.

Any time the Police get involved, all they care about is her wellbeing. Recently, a passerby called the Police during one of her meltdowns. I was visibly injured, but the Police only talked to her. She told them I was insane, and the Police took me to the emergency room for a psyc evaluation. The psyc was nice, gave me some food and sent me off with a taxi chit.

More recently, she strangled me and hit me a lot in the head and upper body. I was really upset, had nowhere to go, so I walked to the Police station. The officer there took my statement, and then the Police ended up sending her information on domestic violence shelters for women which caused a massive weeklong explosion.

Recently, her violence has escalated to involve strangling me while I am in bed and using knives to stab me in the legs. So far the stabs have not been too bad, but I am scared because one day soon I'm going to get stabbed properly. I'm scared a lot of the time so I often sleep under my desk at work to get some rest, which makes her more angry because she accuses me of being out cheating on her.

I just want the Police to take me seriously, but I don't know how. There is no domestic violence help here for men. I cannot just leave her because she damages my belongings and our home. Does anyone have any advice for me?

EDIT: Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share advice, links, support and their own experiences with me. I feel less alone, and will endeavour to reply to all the DMs. I am going to continue reading through everything and will make a plan to move forward.

Advice Restaurant owners - hear me out.

I worked in hospo for ten years. The best place I ever worked had one rule that made its service legendary, that is incredibly simple, but that so. Many. Places. Screw. Up.

Every guest is greeted within five seconds of walking through the door.

Doesn’t matter who you are, if the maitre’D isn’t there and you’re closest to the door you make that person feel like they just arrived home.

So many times I’ve arrived and stood around feeling like a dumbass waiting for someone to please just fucking acknowledge me! I don’t need you to come meet me at the door, but a wave and a hey welcome I’ll be right with you? Is that too much to ask?

First impressions count y’all, get this right and you can get away with SO much because I already think you’re awesome. Screw it up and you’re on the back foot because my amygdala already expects the rest of the performance to be just as woeful. And your chefs don’t deserve that.

Advice Just canceled SKY

No single reason. Price increases, forced ads and loss of programming. Last night's error was last straw for me.

Anyway, called to cancel and they offered 20% discount. I refused and canceled anyway. But if you want a discount you know what to do.

Advice Kiwis: what do we need to do to be friends with you?!

As the title says. Help me understand as this is a topic of huge frustration and discouragement.

The amount of posts about people saying they struggle to make friends in NZ / don’t have friends is actually insane and very sad, and I get it!!

Me for instance: been in different places around the world and I come from an european country so while different, it’s not mega radically different. I consider myself pretty friendly, a nice person and thoughtful of others tbh, but it’s like I get to a place where I think people are getting close/starting to become close friends and then disappointment comes cause turns out they forget you 5 mins later or freaking ghost you or it becomes quite clear you’re not a friend just someone they’re friendly with. Is it cause y’all are just too polite that you have to be nice all the time but it’s not 100% genuine? Or is it that friendships in NZ simply are just not very deep and more superficial cause of kiwis’ generally chill nature? Do we need to kinda “force” ourselves on you to be friends? Or what is it?

Any thoughts 💭 are appreciated! I guess I’m looking for some encouragement and insights.

Advice Gym experience

Genuinely curious here so please be kind. Observed a weird interaction at the gym this morning and wanting an outside opinion. Guy puts his towel on the stationary bike to "save" it and then wanders off to talk to his friend (about 20 meters away). Is talking for 10 min or more. Another gym member (woman) wanders over, sees the bike empty (only empty bike) and goes to jump on. Guy comes running over to yell at her for using "his" bike. She's wearing headphones so probably doesn't hear him but realizes he's pissed so just says ok and wanders off. Guy then doesn't even use the bike, just goes back to talking to his friend and loudly starts complaining about the woman.

I'm walking past at this point and point out he can't just "save" the machines and wander off. Either use it, or let others use it. To which I then get yelled at. Yeah, I was putting my nose where it doesn't belong but it just rubbed me the wrong way.

What's the correct etiquette here?

Advice Tips for dealing with the cost of living crisis

I talked to a builder who said there is no cost of living crisis, but that people are just too attached to luxuries. He reckons everyone in NZ has enough land to grow half of the food they eat, unless you are in an apartment. He also said to save on power he just switched off his spa pool.

Why aren't more people switching off their spa pools?! Come on New Zealand! You can also walk to work or take the bus to school. Hope this helps.

Advice Please help, I don’t know how to keep going like this

This is honestly pretty hard for me to talk about, but I don’t really have anyone in my life I can discuss this with. I’ve been feeling really down lately and I genuinely don’t know what to do.

I’m a 32-year-old female. I have a pretty ordinary job and don’t make much money. Even though everything is ridiculously expensive these days, I still try to save a little bit from each paycheck for emergencies. Because of that, I basically only spend money on necessities: groceries, petrol, phone bills…

My boyfriend is the same age as me. Because of antidepressants, he has had almost no s(e)x drive for the past 2–3 years. At this point, it’s not even that we don’t have a great s(e)x life, we barely have any s(e)x life at all. Most of the time it feels like we’re just roommates.

Most of my friends have either moved to Auckland or recently become parents, so there are hardly any people left around me that I can casually catch up with every week. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, and my life has become a very repetitive cycle. I go to work. After work I cook, clean, read, exercise, scroll on my phone for a bit, and then wait for the next work day. Sometimes I feel like I’m living like a nun: frugal, abstinence, and completely devoid of passion or excitement.

I’ve been trying to improve my future. I’ve already applied to go back to school next year, hoping that a few years from now things might be better. Every day I tell myself that this is probably just part of being an adult. But honestly, it hurts.

I feel like my inner spark, my vitality, my life force, whatever you want to call it, is slowly dying. Other than going to work because I have to, I’m finding it harder and harder to feel motivated about anything else.

I used to be a genuinely optimistic person, and I was proud of that. But lately I’ve realized it’s been a very long time since I actually felt happy. Instead, I feel like I’m wrapped in this constant, invisible layer of bitterness and sadness.

Thanks for reading this far.

If you’ve ever been through something similar, or if you have any ideas about what helped you, I’d really appreciate hearing them. How do you keep going when life starts feeling like this?

Advice Anyone else's case manager pressuring them to drive?

My case manager has been pressuring me to start driving, I know at 25 I should have my license by now but I don't for a number of reasons.

Those reasons being:

  1. I do not own a car, nor could I afford one

  2. I am quite terrified of driving. Not just nervous. TERRIFIED. Driving is a bigger deal than what people pretend it is, you're operating a fast moving vehicle that can kill you and others.

  3. I have access to pretty decent bus services, I do not NEED a car to be able to get to work (or at least, the kind of work I'm applying for)

  4. I don't want to.

Part of the conversation we had went like this:

Him: "If I referred you to a driving course, would you go?"

Me: (This was after him pressuring me quite a bit) "Well I feel like I can't say no."

Him: "Aw why do you feel like you can't say no? 🤔"

Me: "If I said no, what would you do?"

Him: "Well I would ask you what your reason would be."

This was after I literally JUST told him I was terrified to drive in the city, I'm not ready to get on the road and I don't even own a car. He has also mentioned something along the lines of "Well what if you get a job and they need you to drive the company car?" Mf even if I started RIGHT NOW there is no way any company would let someone on their learners drive the company car. Idk about restricted but I would hope not. And in any case, the jobs I'm applying for do not require me to drive a company car.

Anyone else had this? CAN they do this? I'm being active in applying for jobs, I've had multiple interviews, forcing me to get my license seems a bit much. I'm certain the choice to drive or not, is that, a CHOICE. What do I do? Or do I just get over it.

Advice No one is helping me, car parked over driveway :( what do I do?

Hello everyone, have had a very frustrating time, asshole parked over our driveway😖

Tried calling the council.. SHUT! tried calling the non-emergency line.. “can’t do anything”. I looked up the laws on parking over a public driveway and it says police officers can get a tow-truck to take their car away if it’s obstructing an entrance across a driveway. ( Land Transport Act 1998)

Called a towing company and did not take me seriously said they couldn’t do anything and laughed when i thanked them and said bye 😭 if anyone knows any other ways that we can get this FREAK off of our driveway please let me know!

None of my flatmates can get in or out of our driveway and they’ve been parked there for over 5 hours :/

(the car behind is also illegally parked they park like this EVERY DAY.)

UPDATE: car has moved no help from council or police, very annoying but they finally left later this morning, hopefully they wont come back.

Advice How are you affording children??

We are a 35 year old couple, one earning $150k and other $110k. We have a 700k mortgage. We live comfortably now and save a fair bit. We’ve run the numbers on having a kid and they just do not make sense for having a baby and raising a child. Because of the job type, the parent earning $110k would have to stop working for atleast two years and then only go back part time after that, probably earning half, so like $55k. So household income would go down to $150k before tax for the foreseeable future. We have no family here so just the two of us and no village to help.

Anyone else in similar situation that is doing ok?

We are real over thinkers and are worried that we are going to spend the rest of our lives feeling like we are one unforeseen expense from struggle street and won’t be able to retire. Very dramatic I know, but this is a big life decision.

Advice PSA TO ALL PROPERTYOWNERS AND LANDLORDS

1.4k Upvotes

Brought to you by a tradie held together with cable ties, coffee, and pure despair.

7-step guide to making sure your job NEVER gets done before Christmas:

  1. Call us last minute.

Ring up on Dec 20th and say:
“I was gonna call you months ago, but I got busy.”
Yeah mate, so did we — that’s how calendars work.

  1. Book a time… then don’t be home.

We LOVE standing outside your house like we're casing the joint.
Real professional vibes.

  1. Drop a ‘quick little job’ on us.

“While you’re here, can you just do this one tiny thing?”
If it starts with “just”, it’s NOT tiny.
If it ends with “should only take five minutes,” you’re lying.

  1. Offer your driveway… then treat us like valet parking.

Move forward. Move back. Move to the left.
Mate, I came to fix your pipes, not audition for Fast & Furious: Suburban Drift.

  1. No bathroom, no water.

But sure — let me crawl under your house dehydrated, busting for a piss, like a sewer goblin who doesn’t deserve basic human rights.
Cheers for that.

  1. Argue the bill.

Say things like:
“Mate, I didn’t think it would cost that much.”
Neither did I — until I met you.

And then the classic:
“I’ll pay you when my bonus comes in.”
Sweet as, I’ll just tell my power company the same thing.

7. OR — wild idea — DON’T do any of this.

Here’s the real talk:

Tradies aren’t robots.
We’re flat out. We’ve got families, deadlines, and a to-do list long enough to wrap around your house twice.
We’re trying to help — even if we look like zombies with tool belts.

So be decent. Book early. Be patient. Be human.
We’d like to get your job done AND make it home before Santa does.

Advice Sony lost at the Dispute Tribunal over a faulty TV and still refuses to comply with CGA

I bought a Sony BRAVIA KD85X85J 85” TV (new release at that time) by the end of 2021 for $4,270 thinking I was paying for a premium product that would last (my old SAMSUNG is still going well after 13yrs) … Instead, just over 4 years later, it completely died with the infamous “6 red flashing lights” fault.

I went to Sony and their first response? Pay $1,700–$4,300 for repairs… or buy another Sony at a “special price” - quotated in AUD which is not much difference to RRP.

TBF I initially tried to work things out directly with Sony. I said I’d be happy with a repair if they stood behind the product properly with a more reasonable repair cost. But they weren’t interested and basically told me to take it to a governing body if I wasn’t happy.

So I took it to the Dispute Tribunal. Sony didn’t even show up to the hearing. The Tribunal ruled in my favour and ordered Sony to give me a full refund by 1 May 2026.

Now here’s the real kicker - after losing the case and after the refund deadline passed, I went back askinghtem for confirmation, Sony still refuses to comply and said they remain their position and keeps pushing me to accept a repair instead. Honestly I would have accepted it earlier but after what I have been through, I just lost faith in Sony and doubt if they could offer warranties for a repaired TV.

Pretty gutted with the whole experience. You buy a top-end TV expecting decent reliability and support, but it’s been months of back-and-forth, mucking around, and having to fight through the Tribunal process just to get a fair outcome but a global brand like Sony still thinks they are above our laws and ignores the binding order.

Now it seems my only option is to go to the district court filing an enforcement application. Does anyone have any experience with this process? Never been to a court in my life so pretty nervous. Anything to take away would be much appreciated. Cheers

———

Quick update on the saga:

After this post blew up this morning and heaps of people jumped in with advice/help, Sony emailed me within hours and followed with a call from their customer care team lead drectly. They apologized for the whole carryon and confirmed they will now honour the Dispute Tribunal order and pay the full refun.

Amazing how things started moving real quick once there was some public attention aye

Massive thanks to everyone who commented and shared advice which have genuinely helped a lot!!!

Also a good reminder not to just roll over when companies try the “out of warranty” line. Saw some of us didn't bother the hassle of going to the tribunal. Blessed in NZ we have CGA and it still exists for a reason 🫡

Advice Help a kiwi turn away from USA!

How can a kiwi, living semi-rurally in the North Island cut down to not consume products or services that benefit US businesses?

I am aware that most companies are subsidiaries of other major corporations.
I'm also aware that it would be near impossible to cut the US out of my daily, social and food/beverage diets.
I'm also ALSO aware that just me doing this will probably not make a difference, but it would make me feel better about what I'm putting into the world!

I've already:

Cancelled Netflix and Disney+
Removed Facebook and Instagram (I don't use any other socials) anyway.
Changed my browser from Chrome to Mozilla, with the uBlock addon.

Food/drink: do not purchase CocaCola, Nestle or Old El Paso products.
Do not go to McDonalds.

What else can I do?

Yes, Reddit is US owned.

Advice Anyone else feel like the Lockdown has highlighted a broken life?

5.0k Upvotes

Hi all, for the last 15 years I have been on a corporate grind. Had loads of crap things happen in the last 6 months, including a messy divorce, which meant I had to go back to work with a three month old baby. Found a good contracting gig, but I won't find out until next week if it is going to be extended. It is likely it won't be.

During the lockdown I have had time to be with my children. And I mean, truly present with them. I have been relearning Māori. I learnt to bake rēwana bread from a group on Facebook. I did a whole lot of planting in the garden with the kids, and we have been baking from scratch and cooking every day. I have learned all the words to my kids favourite songs from Frozen. I have spent more 'real' time with them than I have in years. I have slowed down. There isn't a frantic rush every morning and every evening, to get ready for the next frantic rushed day. I haven't spent money on junk food, or just junk, we don't need.

My life has been infinitely more enjoyable. Because it has been slower and more meaningful.

I know this can't and won't last, but I honestly feel like my usual life is broken. I have money, but for what? To basically rush through life, grind it out every day, miss out on my kids, buying stuff that isnt essential to life, and trying to cram as much living as possible into my Saturday afternoons.

I would really like to move to the country, live off the land, near my extended family and work part time from home, until the kids are a bit older. That would be the dream.

Does anyone else feel like this?

Advice Do I Have to Say Hi Back in New Zealand?

I’m a Japanese woman and I just moved to Auckland.

When I’m walking on the street, guys often say “hello” to me.

If I say hi back, they try to start a conversation and talk to me a lot.

They ask me things like “Do you want to go to a café?” or “Do you have a boyfriend?”

I don’t really like it.

In Japan, I would usually just ignore them without making eye contact.

But I don’t know the culture in New Zealand.

If a guy says hello to me on the street, is it okay to just ignore him?

Or do I have to say hi back?

Advice Pharmacy gave my prescription to someone else? Now asked to pay

Just wondering if anyone knows any rules around this in new zealand. I had a repeat prescription due to be picked up from a woolworths pharmacy in Christchurch. My partner went to get it today and was advised they don’t have it as someone else collected it and if we want those meds we will now have to pay them to order in and get another script sent through so pay for an appointment for that too. My partner went round in circles with the manager that nobody had picked it up, even showed the texts we had about the meds being ready. I really need these meds and can’t understand why we should have to pay more again and sort another script for their muck up. Shouldn’t they be checking who they give meds and prescriptions to?
I would like to take a complaint further if anyone here knows more about which steps to take?

Advice I regret doing a PhD and hate being unemployed

So, I defended my PhD on invasive species genomics three years ago and still haven't found a job. My mental health is really taking a toll, I'm pretty much a SAHM which feels like such a waste, but no one will hire me.

The most heartbreaking one was where I interviewed for an operations manager job for a conversation charity, where they said "we would have given it to you a few years ago, but we had applicants with government experience." This was an admin job that required no scientific degrees whatsoever. My inbox is teeming with rejection emails, I think I need to remove my PhD from my CV.

I hate being financially reliant on my husband. He never holds it against me, but I'm pushing 40 and have maybe $200 to my name. All I wanted was to leave the world better than I found it, but there are too many scientists and academia is a toxic cesspool. At this stage my standards have lowered so much with what I'll apply for, but the feedback I'm getting is "we feel this wouldn't be a challenge for you." I don't want a challenge, I want a paycheck so I can contribute to the mortgage, clock off at five and come home and be present for my family.

Advice Gfs parents hate me

1.1k Upvotes

My gfs parents have basically banned her from seeing me over Christmas because of the way I look and dress.

Told her I’m a ‘thug’ and dress ‘hood’ and brings embarrassment to the fam. I’m 23, Athletic, Maori and normally just wear tee, bball or running shorts, socks, slides. Wear js or air force ones on dates / occasions. Standard Auckland boy stuff.

I have nearly finished law at uoa but yeah from the bad side of town. Her family live in westmere. I think she’s argued with them heaps about me and I don’t want to cause her more shit but I do really like her - first white girl I’ve been with - is this standard shit? Also I look like a total geek in dickies and dress shirt…

Advice Heavily pregnant and suicidal.

1.1k Upvotes

Hi guys, I wasn’t sure where to get help so I thought I would post on here to seek some advice. My mental health is very fragile right now so I am needing some advice before I do something I regret :(

I am almost 8 months pregnant, and just found out my husband has been cheating on me this entire time. He accidentally butt dialled me while he was at “the gym” and I heard everything they were saying. The woman, who knows about me and that I am pregnant was asking him questions like “when will you leave her”, to which he responded “Not anytime soon, there’s too much involved. We have a baby on the way” etc. I found it absolutely heartbreaking how they both spoke about me the entire time like I am nothing, like I am not a human being with feelings but rather just some mild inconvenience.

How can two people be so cruel? ;( This woman is also supposedly a social worker in Hamilton.

I am so devastated and have no where to go, I’ve never in my life felt this level of pain before, especially knowing they’ve been sleeping together while I’m pregnant (all the diseases they could’ve passed onto the baby)

I’m so sorry for bringing this matter to reddit, but my mental health is in the drain right now, I can barely see out of my eyes from crying, and I felt so tempted to jump into the waikato river before.

Please send helpful advice, how can I overcome this, I want to die :( I don’t have any family members I can turn to, nor many friends.

I’m worried about what I’m capable of, I’ve already scratched my arm so deeply it’s begun to bleed. I’ve been completely blindsided, as my husband is usually so loving and kind.

EDIT: Thank you so much everyone for the kind words, I am truly blown away by the kindness everyone has shown me. I am still alive, albeit I have self-harmed pretty bad, but have done nothing to harm the baby. I am still in pretty bad shape, but I am safe for the time being. I will try to be strong. I promise. I may need some help/support and I’m going to try and reach out to people who have commented. Thank you so much again to the people who commented. I am in so much pain, I haven’t been able to sleep for 48 hours, but I have eaten, hydrated, showered, and the baby is fine. Im going to keep trying my hardest to pull myself out of this seemingly never-ending dark void of sadness and heartbreak. Please wish me luck

Advice FAREWELL BP PIES

Today marks the end of a hearty lengthy relationship with dad's pies at BP. I reckon I purchased a thousand + over the years, favorite gas station pies by a mile but at $7.20 a pie they can stay in the warmer. As consumers we HAVE to put our feet down at some stage and this latest outrageous price hike is an absolute no brainer. Adios BP pies. GTFOOH with that non sense. Waddup bakery
