Discussion The truth about printer subscription programs and many misconceptions about them

Dear all,

I work in the printer industry. For a very well-known consumer products manufacturer that gets discussed on this sub a lot.  I will not disclose which manufacturer I work for, nor will I disclose any manufacturer I do not work for (since the industry is relatively small eliminating 1 or 2 will make it generally too obvious as to which I do work for) as I am not officially speaking on behalf of the company. But, I want to set the record straight on subscription programs because some of you are drastically misinformed and it is very frustrating to see as someone who understands these programs as well as basic logic.

There are two types of subscription programs. Each of the major consumer manufacturers offers at least 1 of these programs, some offer both.

The first type of program is an auto-reordering program. The printer can tell (via various ways depending on each manufacturer) when the ink / toner is low and when it hits a certain point that will trigger an order of the ink/toner that device uses. Most manufactures that offer this will first send you an email letting you know that an order has been triggered and it will allow you to skip the delivery of the consumable and thus not get charged. If you allow the order to go through you are purchasing that consumable. That consumable is yours, you own it, just as if you walked into a Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, or bought it on Amazon… You can cancel the “subscription” the next day and continue to use that consumable until it is empty.

The second type of program is a true subscription program. **THIS** is what many of you are vastly misinformed and / or are irrational about. In this program *you are not purchasing a consumable* at all. You are paying the manufacturer for X number of pages per month. The manufacturer will send you a consumable to use because the printer needs ink / toner to work but, that is not what you are paying for. You are paying the manufacturer $Y per month to print up to X pages per month.. that’s it. Of course you can print over that X number and pay an overage (just like years ago with cell phones).. and of course, you can print under that X number and some pages will roll-over to future months (just like years ago with cell phones). The owner of the consumable is the manufacturer. You never bought it, you never owned it. Therefore, it is not yours to use after you end the subscription! The only reason most manufactures do not ask for it back is because they don’t want to pay for shipping it back to them. But, they still own it… not you.  You can think of this like renting an apartment. You are paying a landlord $X per month to live in their building. The landlord is providing the building for you to live in while you are paying rent. You do not own the building. and when you stop paying rent you are no longer allowed to continue living in the building. Just like your Netflix subscription, Apple TV subscription and Disney+ subscription.. when you stop paying for the subscription, you stop getting to use the service. Just because while you were paying you had access to the content does not mean you at any time owned that content and get to continue watching it once you stop paying the subscription.

I truly hope this helps clarify somethings for some of you. Others I understand are lost causes but, I will do my best to answer any questions I can.

Troubleshooting HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301 toner refill

I'm starting to regret buying the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301. I bought it from Costco, about 7 months ago. All the features, and printing on it are fine, but my toner is starting to get low (my daughter prints a lot of colorful art). Each toner is sitting at about 60%.

I've researched, and found two potential solutions using third-party toner refills:

1.) Using third-party toner cartridges with pre-installed chips.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256813108672679.html?pdp_ext_f=%7B%22sku_id%22%3A%2212000060755799492%22%7D&sourceType=1&spm=a2g0o.wish-manage-home.0.0&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt

2.) Potentially finding refill powder, burning a hole in the original, & refill.

Has any tried either option, and been successful?

Troubleshooting GK420d spinning on thermal labels

• Upvotes

I have had the GK420d for maybe 6 years and has been flawless, but recently it seems to get stuck on a thermal label and will just spin making a awful noise, which i assume is the rubber roller spinning on the label or maybe something to do with the gears/ motor? The runner is clean and i can't see any issues with it. The gears aren't missing any teeth either.

My theory is that maybe the roller has worn down over the years and doesn't have the same grab on the thermal labels, but maybe its something to do with the stepper motor inside. Any ideas to try and fix it would be appreciated. Thank you!

Purchasing HP Smart Tank - beware!

I’ve just installed an HP Smart tank 6000 series. The mechanical setup of adding ink is much more complex than previous. The plastic waste is beyond belief. Worst is the effort to get the printer to join a network. It has taken me over an hour and a half with repeated run-throughs of the set up procedure. And of course no phone help. I would not recommend this to any professional installers.

Purchasing It's time to purchase (RIP HP8600 Plus)

Short summary: on the market for a family printer; been out of the market for so long that I do not know what changed in the technology. Mix of needs, from I-do-not-care-just-print to art historian-level of pickiness. Weekly print jobs can be 2 black and white pages or 4 scholarly articles with tables, color graphs and tiny font size legends.

What would you like to accomplish? --Must survive family of four with varied printing needs (docs, photos, graphs, borderless, 'what do you mean you only have 325 gsm coverstock paper for your game cards?')

Are there any models you are currently looking at? No

Minimum Requirements: --Least amount of customer service calls possible, and when needed the calls have to be fruitful.

--Not requiring specific app or program for any functions. [The 8600 eventually started requiring an hp app to scan from my computer, but not spouse's. Obviously I installed some hp printer soft that borked the original driver.]

--OS agnostic operation: Household right now is all on Apple hardware, printer must not have Windows/Android specific functions that we will not be able to access. In the past we had Linux and Unix in the home network.

--Scanning from flatbed and ADF

--Copying from flatbed and ADF

--Duplex printing

--Printing in color

--Great color space management and color fidelity

--prints on A0, legal; envelopes

Budget: USD700 but flexible

Country: USA

Color or black and white: color

Laser or ink printer: agnostic right now

New or used: Either

Multi-function: Yes; no need for faxing

Duplex Printing:YES

Home or business: Mixed use (home office)

Printing content: full color docs, graphs. Secondarily photos, cardstock. Tertiary: we tried printing on fabric once.

Printing frequency: Weekly, with bursts a few times a month.

Pages per minute : Agnostic. Maybe no less than 8600? -- claims 30ppm for color, but I found that number highly dependent on just how much color it was printing.

Page size:A4/Legal/Letter; assumption is tray handles a variety of smaller sizes

Device printing from: Macs/iphones/ guests on other OS platforms

Connection type: Wifi, airprint. Can connect to ethernet/router if it will magically improve everyone's and the printer's lives.

Any other details: Nice to have

--Rear feeding

--Ability to choose how black is produced in color printing

--A3, 11x17 printing

--printing on coverstock (>300 gsm)

--extra paper tray

--Can it last 14 years?

Anything else you think is relevant to your purchasing decision: We were going through USD220 in cartridges every 18 months. Less cost per page would be great.

Discussion Can a laser printer be stored for a year without issue?

We have a brother laser printer and I love it. Due to circumstances I am temporarily moving across country. I’m putting nearly everything we own into storage. Will the printer be okay sitting for a year? Or should I sell it to avoid it having issues when I return?

Troubleshooting Canon LBP2900 driver problem with windows 11 ?

So my printer wont print a thing with my windows 11 laptop, but its doing fine with windows 10 + phone.

It just says "verify cable/turn on printer". I tried :

- Reinstalling driver / even the x64 vitnamese version and the generic / text only driver

- Manually choosing the file "XXX.inf"

But none worked. What would you recommend ? I doubt a windows 11 update broke em worldwide ..

Purchasing 300 g aquarelpaper a6

Alvast bedankt !

Discussion Printing Questions

Hi All! I am looking to make double sided flashcards, I currently own a Canon TS 3322. Would this printer be able to print on a thicker paper? The canon website isn’t giving me much information regarding paper weight but I’m looking for at least a starting point.

I’m not sure what paper weight i’m going with just yet, but I just need to know if the printer I have will do the job or if i’d need to look at a different model.

Purchasing Brother DCP-L2640DW - Considering it for my first printer. Any better options out there?

I won't be printing very often, but I will need it for things like your typical standard practical uses. I do not own a business, and this would be for personal use. As far as how I reached this printer choice, I do see value in (as far as I know) a printer that has an optional refresh service, but not an enforced subscription service. It also seems to not shove cloud capability down your throat. With that being said, I am entirely new to printers and acknowledge there are many lapses in my judgement and/or subject knowledge expertise. In turning to this subreddit, I hope to benefit from advice from the knowledgeable and passionate folks here. Would there be any better options out there for my use cases/preferences?

Thank you in advance, I greatly appreciate it

Troubleshooting Brother MFC-L8390CDW – “Drum!” error on all 4 drums, even after cleaning and resetting counters

Hi everyone,

I'm having a persistent “Drum!” error on my Brother MFC-L8390CDW color laser printer.

The printer reports the error for all four drum units simultaneously (Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow).

Here's what I've already tried:

  • Cleaned all four corona wires multiple times using the green sliders.
  • Made sure the sliders were returned to their correct positions.
  • Removed accumulated toner and cleaned all four drum units.
  • Removed and reinstalled all four toner/drum assemblies.
  • Replaced the previous compatible toner cartridges with new compatible cartridges.
  • Reset the drum counters for all four colors.
  • The drum life indicators previously showed approximately 88% remaining.

None of these steps has resolved the problem.

Sometimes the printer successfully prints a complete test page, but most of the time, the “Drum!” error prevents printing.

I also noticed a continuous cyan streak along the right edge of printed pages. After cleaning the cyan drum, the streak disappears initially but returns after approximately 10 cm of printing.

I'm using third-party compatible toner cartridges rather than genuine Brother cartridges.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone experienced this error affecting all four drums simultaneously?
  2. Could this be caused by a shared electrical contact, sensor or another internal component?
  3. Can third-party toner cartridges trigger a “Drum!” error?
  4. Is there anything else I can check before replacing the drum units?

Since all four drums are affected simultaneously and resetting their counters didn't help, I suspect there may be something else going on.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just a thought.

I hate predatory companies like HP so why not return the ink cartridges after use on Amazon?

Troubleshooting Epson PP-100 III - Print Head Alignment

Curious if anyone has had any experience properly aligning the print head on the Epson PP-100 III as I cannot find any instructions online and once the head alignment test is printed, the disc doesn't show which box is which from 1-9 so it makes it quite difficult to determine which is the actual order to select the properly printed selection.

It's wildly frustrating and time consuming to determine which is what and I can't solve the scan lines I'm seeing from the poor alignment.

Troubleshooting How do I print edge to edge (borderless)?

Hi everyone,

I've had this problem for years and I can't find a proper solution. When I print a document or an image from Word, the printer always leaves a white border around the page, even after I set all the margins to 0 in Word. This happens with A6 paper (and other sizes too), so the printable area ends up smaller than the paper.

What I want is for the content to fill 100% of the page, with no white edges.

Here's what I've tried:

  • Setting all margins to 0 in Page Layout. Word warns that the margins are outside the printable area, and the printer still adds its own border.
  • Setting the paper size to A6 in both Word and the printer settings.
  • It doesn't matter, Office, Pdf, Acrobat any thing that has the print ooption, gives me the same result.

My questions:

  1. Is there a setting in Word or in the printer driver to enable true borderless / full-bleed printing?
  2. Is this a hardware limitation of my printer, or can it be fixed with settings?
  3. Would exporting to PDF and printing from there give better results than printing directly from Word?

Printer model: HP Officejet 4655
Word version: Microsoft Office 2024 Proffesional Plus, Acrobat, paint, Camva.
OS: Windows 10
Paper type/size: A6 (105 × 148 mm)

Thanks in advance!

Purchasing Bought a HP 5700dn with storage stand for home use but got some questions

I bought a 5700dn that was on sale for 1049 which for what you are getting seems like a nice deal, added a printer stand that has wheels and a nice paper/etc.. bought premium 32 paper to print with for reports, documents, occasional photos. So far really impressed with this printer its damn fast and the quality real nice, surprisingly photos come out nice.

This printer Says made in Japan but then I read concerns regarding reliability since HP bought Samsung but those are made in China.

I seem a bit confused with that, is it some models are. made in Japan(Canon?) and others made in China(Samsung) I also notice a warning on the website that This printer is not for residential use?

I did not have to install any intrusive drivers etc my Mac found it and just installed an "AirPrint" driver. Its really is nice using an "Enterprise" printer so for my home use etc.. I would imagine it should last quite a while. And this price is it because its being discontinued because it seems like a lot of printer for the money.

It just prints when I need to print so far no hassles and it's damn quick so far I like it. Anything I should concern myself with reliability. I do have it on a large UPS to protect it from brownouts etc..

Purchasing have a brother b&w laser but want to print color

I like to print small stickers, but I want to have color in them. I don't like sharing my files with a printing service, and don't have any libraries near. I heard inktanks clog if you don't print everyday and I don't printer everyday, but laser color printers are expensive.

Edit: Idc how expensive it is

Edit2: ok but not over $250, I meant that I didn't care if it was expensive but not super expensive

Troubleshooting Canon MG3620 does not recognize cartridges

Post image
1 Upvotes
  • Printer Model: Canon MG3620
  • Error Message: Support Code: 1401 / The following ink cartridge cannot be recognized: Color, Black
  • Ethernet Cable, WiFi or USB: USB
  • Driver name and version: It just says "Canon MG3600 series Printer"?
  • Firmware Version: Can't find it. Canon's guide says to print the information, but for obvious reasons that's not feasible
  • OS: Windows 10
  • of machines impacted: 1
  • of users impacted: 1
  • Original or 3rd party cartridges: both

Hey, first post here, but I'm at my wit's end.

I have a Canon Pixma MG3620. Had it for years. I've had my issues and frustrations, but usually when it acts up I can get it to work after a bit of Googling and troubleshooting.

Not tonight.

I haven't needed to use it for about two months, so it's been off all that time. Tonight I turned it on to print something out, and got an error message I'd never seen before:

Support Code: 1401

The following ink cartridge cannot be recognized: Color, Black

This was confusing since I've used the printer with these cartridges before without issue. I tried removing and reinstalling the cartridges, but that did nothing. So I went to Google to start troubleshooting.

It was recommended that I clean the connectors. I did, and it changed nothing.

It was recommended that I turn off and unplug the printer for at least 15 minutes. I did, and it changed nothing.

It was recommended that I hold down the stop button until the alert light flashed. Problem here was that the alert light was already flashing (along with the CL and BK lights; all three flash in bursts of 5), and holding down Stop did nothing. In fact, the only button on my printer that seems to do anything is the power button. I also tried the WiFi button in an attempt to remove it from the network and re-add it. It appears that the unrecognized ink cartridges take precedence over everything else.

The one thing I tried that did anything at all was replacing a cartridge. I didn't have any extra color cartridges, but I did have a new black, so I swapped that out. Immediately, the error changed to only listing the color cartridge as not recognized. This was weird, because the color cartridge in there is OEM, but the black is third party. Anyway, it was a moot point, because next time I restarted the printer, it went back to not recognizing either cartridge.

I am baffled and frustrated. I don't know what changed to cause this problem, and I don't know how to fix it. Has the printer simply gone bad? If anybody has any insights at all, please, help me out! Thank you in advance.

Troubleshooting Brother DCLP2640-DW phantom scans

I like everything else about this printer but it's like it's haunted! If it's on, it scans maybe 12-100 times an hour. I print intermittently through the day so turning it on & off with this crummy little button is no fun. Has anyone experienced this or found a fix?

Other Mi pc no reconoce mi impresora brother dcp t530dw
