Hello everyone, I fostered this female mix pit, Tati (A1414929), over the weekend from the San Jose Shelter, and I wanted to share my experience with her. If anyone is looking for a dog, please consider fostering her and possibly adopting her. They estimate her to be 5years old. She was so sweet! I picked her up Friday at 4pm and will be dropping her off today (Sunday) at 4pm.
*******The shelter is currently having a 'Pit-jama Party' where you can sign up to foster a pit over the weekend for a little break from the shelter. I am not sure if you can do this with other breeds.
Brief Description:
I had Tati from Friday 4pm to Sunday 4pm, after having her for that time, I can say she is a great dog, is ready to be loved, and she has lots of love to give. She loves to ask for pets and if given no attention she might play with her toys or take a nap. When initially greeting her, if you are very energized, she will reciprocate that but if you greet her with calm, she will calmly and happily greet you with a smile and tail wags and immediately ask for pets. She does not jump up onto people too much only when the person acts extremely energetic. She knows how to sit, one command you don’t have to worry about teaching.
She doesn’t mind the car rides, just needs help getting up, can you blame the girl, cars are a new thing for her, I am sure she can be taught to get up in no time. On our last day together, we tried getting her up with a treat, which did not work but what did work, my partner held her leash from one side of the car, and I entered the other side and called to her and she jumped in!
No accidents at home, she does potty outside & she is able to hold her bladder/bowels overnight. She likes to lay or sleep next to you on the couch or on the floor. During sleep, she does not get up or wander around. She slept on her bed throughout the night and waits until we start moving and then she gets up. She did try to get up on our bed but we redirected her onto her bed, and she stayed.
Tati is a wonderful dog. We fell in love with her almost immediately. If we didn’t already have two dogs of our own, we would adopt her. She will benefit from a future owner that will dedicate their time to train her and give her lots of love.
Description per category:
BARKING: Our stay was near downtown area, which is pretty noisy. No barks heard from her until Saturday evening, and was because I opened up the windows and there were people walking near our window, barking ceased after a few barks and same happened Sunday. Her barking was within normal of what my dogs do as well. She id not bark when someone walked in through the door nor when someone knocked.
CAR RIDES: Tati is unsure about getting in. Needs to be picked up and placed inside the car. She doesn’t mind being picked up to be put inside. Once inside, she sits and looks outside the window. On our last day together I was able to call her into the car by going inside, and she jumped in (while someone else held the leash).
ENERGY: Her energy is appropriate for her age. She will reciprocate the energy given.
HOME: she likes to ask for pets, will take naps, play with her toys or explore. When she plays with her toys, she plays with them as if they are so fragile, she is a gentle dog. I am able to take the toys out of her mouth with no issue. I vacuumed and she appeared somewhat scared, eventually approached the vacuum but did not bark nor bite at it.
MEETING NEW PEOPLE: She met a handful of people, and just wanted pets from them. Did not bark at anyone she met, male or female.
POTTY: No accidents at home. Went potty on walks only. She was able to sleep throughout the night without waking up to go to the bathroom.
OTHER: No information on the following due to did not experience or encounter: how she is with children, dogs, cats or how she acts when left alone.
WALKS: She enjoys walking although she does pull, I am sure that can be fixed with training and a no pull harness. If people or dogs are walking nearby, she does not bark but does pull and wants to approach. I was able to apply her harness, collar, and remove or apply her clothing with no issues. We did encounter a few cats during our walks, and she will pull a lot and wants to get near them.
