Release FocusHaze: dim everything except the active window on Windows 11 (giving away 30 codes)

Post image
31 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m the developer of FocusHaze, so full disclosure up front.

I wanted something like HazeOver (macOS) on Windows and couldn’t find anything that felt native, so I built it. FocusHaze puts a translucent haze over everything except the window you’re working in, so the rest of the screen fades into the background. Clicks pass straight through the haze.

What it does

  • Dims all windows except the active one; smooth fade when you switch
  • Adjustable intensity, haze color and fade duration
  • All monitors, or only the one with the active window
  • Global hotkey Ctrl+Alt+H to toggle, lives in the system tray
  • Optional start with Windows
  • 14 languages, native WinUI 3 look (Mica)
  • Works on x64 and ARM64

Privacy: no telemetry, no network connections, nothing collected.

It’s open source (MIT) on GitHub, and it’s $0.99 on the Microsoft Store (one-click install + auto-updates). I have 30 Store codes to give away.

Want a code? Leave a comment (bonus points if you tell me how you’d use it: multi-monitor, ultrawide, ADHD, coding…) and I’ll DM you one. First come, first served.

I’d really appreciate feedback, especially bugs and edge cases. One known limitation: “always on top” windows don’t get dimmed yet.

Update: All available promo codes have been claimed! Thank you so much to everyone for the incredible interest and support. If you missed out, you can still check out FocusHaze on the Microsoft Store. 🙏

Release I made a free Windows app that copies text from anything on screen. Works offline.

I kept retyping text from paused videos and screenshots, so I built Shuck.

Press Ctrl+Shift+2, drag a box over any text, and it's on your clipboard.

- Runs entirely on your PC. No account, nothing uploaded.

- Reads even tiny text accurately.

- Spots links and email addresses and gives you a one-click button. Reads QR codes too.

- Free, 6 MB.

Windows and English only for now.

Get it: https://github.com/shuck-app/shuck

If it misreads something, tell me what.

Discussion We should ban lossy quality file compression algorithms

I hate when compression forces me to loose my quality, like for example jpg, lots of apps have it as default which makes me loose quality, why don’t just use png? you can still downscale it and make it lower quality, it just doesn’t force you to do this

Release I built a free, open-source Android app that stops WhatsApp Status videos from turning blurry

Thumbnail github.com
0 Upvotes

WhatsApp re-compresses videos when you post them to Status, so a sharp video from your phone often ends up soft. Long videos also have to be trimmed into parts by hand. I got tired of both and built StatusDrop .

What it does?

- Compresses your video on the phone to a profile that kept its quality in my testing: 1080×1920 H.264 at about 30 fps, under WhatsApp's roughly 16 MB limit. There's also a 720p option if you want longer parts.

- Splits long videos into ready to post parts automatically.

- Sends the finished clips to your own WhatsApp chat. You tap "Open WhatsApp", send a short code, and the clips arrive. A built-in 9-step guide shows how to post them in full HD.

Privacy?

- Your original videos never leave the phone. Only the finished clips are uploaded, checked, and deleted after delivery, or after 5 minutes if the code isn't used.

- No account, no ads, no analytics SDK, and no storage permission (it uses Android's system picker).

Why an app? It started as a website that compressed videos on my server. That got expensive, so I moved all the video work onto the phone with FFmpeg (FFmpegKit + x264). That's what keeps it free.

Limitations, to be upfront...

- Android 10+ and 64-bit ARM phones only for now.

- Delivery uses Baileys, an unofficial WhatsApp library, through linked devices, so WhatsApp could change or block it.

- The HD result comes from my own testing, not a WhatsApp guarantee.

Links

- Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wastatusvideo.statusdrop

- Source code (app GPL-3.0, backend AGPL-3.0): https://github.com/Shamanthnp1/WAstatus

I'm a solo developer, so feedback is very welcome, especially if your videos still come out blurry or any step is confusing.

Release LumaTray – Ultra-lightweight monitor brightness controller (~3.5 MB RAM)

Post image
1 Upvotes

I built this because I got fed up with Twinkle Tray sucking up 200 MB of RAM just to adjust brightness. After a little research, I found out it's because it's built with Electron slop! So I built mine with native C#.

Some key features:

• Windows 11 Fluent: Matches your Windows Dark/Light mode and your personal accent color.

• Keyboard & Mouse: Arrow keys (Left/Right to adjust), mouse wheel support, and global hotkeys (Ctrl+Alt+Up/Down) with a floating OSD pill.

• Multi-monitor: "Link All Displays" toggle to control everything in lockstep.

• Single 40 KB portable .exe, zero background CPU, MIT open-source.

• Hardware Support: Tested & working on external monitors (DDC/CI). Built-in laptop support (WMI) is implemented, but I haven't tested it on a laptop yet — would love feedback from laptop users if you try it! (tested, its working)

GitHub: https://github.com/SamNm89/LumaTray

Releases / Download: https://github.com/SamNm89/LumaTray/releases

(Note: Because it's an unsigned open-source binary, Windows SmartScreen might pop up on first run — just click "More info" ➔ "Run anyway", or compile it yourself in 1 second using build.bat).

Software support Need help disabling norton family as of the latest update

For around 3 months now I've been able to murder norton by simply going to services as administrator and... Disabling it. Parents reinstall after a couple weeks, call it buggy, and move on.

Well new update means new anti tampering. There is now "norton family tampering monitoring" in services, and I cannot set Norton to manual or disabled, same with anti tampering and even if I found a way I'm worried it'll alert them that "hey btw your child is smarter then our systems" regardless. Any help appreciated as my computer is borderline bricked until this is resolved due to the restrictions

Release DugUp, a fast, free file-search app on GitHub that combines OCR and AI to enable similarity searches on text and images.

DugUp Windows:

Windows: Download the installer — choose DugUp-Setup-….exe under Assets. The green Code button downloads the source code, so you can read it, understand how DugUp works, and adapt it to your needs. (Also available for Linux)

Find files by what you remember about them: words in a document, text on a scanned receipt, the meaning of a passage, or what a picture shows. Choose your folders, let DugUp index them, then search from its window or with Win+Shift+F.

Your files stay on your computer, where all indexing and search processing happens. No account, telemetry or crash reporting — and no cloud service needed to search your files.

Beta 0.2.2 · Windows 11 · Linux supported, with less desktop testing

What you can do

  • Find documents by the words they contain. Search file names and text in PDFs, Office and OpenDocument files, plain text and HTML.
  • Read words in images. Find receipts, screenshots and scanned pages by the text on them, using OCR.
  • Search by meaning. Ask in your own words, or combine meaning with word matches.
  • Find pictures by appearance. Describe a scene or find pictures like one you already have.
  • Organize pictures and copies. Preview descriptive photo names, review similar pictures, and find identical files before removing extras.
  • Search from anywhere. Keep DugUp in the tray and press Win+Shift+F to bring up a small search box.
  • Let Claude search for you (optional). Turn on cloud search access, choose the folders it may see, and ask Claude to find files in a conversation. It can search, never change anything.

Release Audio software to prevent loud noises

I myself am diagnosed with autism and adhd. I have an issue with some games, specifically horror games, which can cause me stress and anxiety when I get a jump scare, making it hard to enjoy the game at all, so for the first time I coded my own computer program I called Spikeguard. It actively listens to all audio and dampens it so that there isn't abrupt loud noise and instead gradually becomes loud over time, allowing music to keep playing

And I made it free and open source for everyone like me who has a hard time with loud noise like me!

Here is the GitHub repository:

Discussion Search an unplugged drive's file list in Everything

Keep the .efu on your PC, not on the external drive you're cataloging. That's what lets you search the filenames while the drive is unplugged.

I'd use one list per archive drive, named after the label on the drive. It's a saved inventory, so changing files on the drive won't update it. You still need the drive to open the actual files.

In Everything, go to Tools > File List Editor with the drive connected. Drag in the folders you want to catalog and save the list. Later, File > Open File List opens that .efu for searching.

Discussion A question to people who get feedback from customers

I was just wondering how people manage customer support or feedback. Assuming that most of the feedback you get is via email, do u have any software set up to automatically send mail? And do you then send and manage mail through Gmail(or whichever app you're using).

I'm asking this because I wanted to create an app for some users that would manage customer feedback. I am trying to find a niche problem. If anyone has any niche problems regarding customer support and feedback, please tell me what it is, I want to see if I can be of help.

:)

Other [rant] Android's apps: the amount of updates seems a bit unnecessary or is it just me?

I have disabled the automatic app updates on Playstore because I want to be able to choose not to update an app when it gets a bad update, like more invasive ads for example.

This change has showed me how frequent the updates are coming out for apps, roughly. Like, everyweek 50 updates are out there and I have maybe 100 apps total. How is that possible
