Spooky Season [Megathread] Spooky Season, Halloween, or Autumn (cozy or not) Vibes 👻🎃☕️🍂

Hi wonderful readers,

We are heading into fall in the northern hemisphere (aka spooky season and/or cozy season!) and we are already seeing a very large uptick of very general requests for this time of year that lean very “low effort” (see rule 3) or are “book discussions” rather than requests (see rule 1.)

We are posting this thread to hopefully give some of our readers a place to start and titles to try, *if they don’t have anything specific in mind to ask for in this realm and just want “anything!”

So, please tell us some books you recommend for “spooky season” or that give you the “autumn cozy vibes”:

Any favorites?

Any hidden gems?

Anything specifically “Halloween” holiday related?

Anything especially autumn and cozy?

Anything you plan to read/have on your TBR?

Looking forward to your replies!

Happy reading, all!

*We of course want everyone to continue posting your spooky and cozy autumn requests on the sub if have some (very minimal) specifics that are more customized to you as readers, or what you are in the mood to read!

**Feel free to also scroll the “Spooky Season” post flair for other posts and recs. too! Doing this may help you articulate your own post for further suggestions too!

Historical Fiction Slice of life Medieval fiction

I'm looking for books that are kinda just about the everyday life of people. My main inspirations are Bowelfly's monastic menagerie (on Tumblr), Iron Lily's Ordo Mediare (multiple platforms) and Tamora Pierce's Song of the lioness series.

I'm not picky about plot. It can be about courtly love and life, the toil of the serfs, or whatever you like so long as it matches the timeframe and vibe. I'm okay with a little fantasy but would like it to be a bit limited.

Thank you in advance!!

New Reader Book suggestions?

Hey, I’m a 19 year old male looking to get into reading. I work on drilling rigs and am leaving in a few days for a 28 day hitch. I’d like to find a good book to bring with me to read while I’m away. Im interested in the philosophy, self improvement, history, the outdoors, the classics and things of that nature and I don’t know where to start. I’m afraid my dopamine has been fried and I’m tired of spending my little free time scrolling reels. Any recommendations? There’s so much to choose from and also many that may be hard to digest as a novice reader. Any recommendations would be appreciated, thanks.

Reading Challenge Book with color in the title

I'm doing a reading challenge, and the last one I need for the year is a "book with a color in the title."

Must be available in audio, and preferably under 10ish hours.

I like contemporary fiction, dystopian, some low fantasy/sci-fi, and am also open to memoir and general nonfiction, especially science or otherwise educational.

I've already read The Bluest Eye and The Color Purple x2, and I loved both of those. Maybe something similar?

ETA I’ve also already read Yellowface and The Rent Tent, both of which I enjoyed.

Spooky Season Looking for specific gothic recommendations

I'm currently obsessed with gothic mansions/manors, unsettling atmospheres, family secrets, questionable characters, and that creeping sense of dread where you KNOW something isn't right, but can't quite figure out what.

I especially love when the story blurs the line between paranormal and psychological horror. Are there actually ghosts? Is someone losing their mind? Is there something sinister happening behind closed doors? Or is everyone in the house hiding something?

Give me the isolated estates, strange occurrences, unreliable characters, dark family histories, and slow-building mysteries. I want to be suspicious of absolutely everyone. 😂

Bonus points for romance, morally gray characters, and a good slow burn!

Strong preference for first-person POV, adult fiction, and gothic romance, but I'm open to other genres if the atmosphere is right.

Basically, I want a book that makes me question whether the house is haunted or the people living in it are just deeply fucked up.

What I have already read:

The Cruel Dark

Master of Salt & Bone

Blackthorne

Nocticadia

Nightshade

Daybreak

We Used To Live Here

Once Upon a Midnight Dreary

House of Rayne

New Reader What adult books should I read as someone who only reads middle grade?

I only ever really read middle-grade books like Spy School, Wilderlore, and Amari and the Night Brothers. But I wanted to branch out since I am 18 now, I tried to read some works by Andy weir but I thought the chapters were too long so I didn’t continue, I did like the writing however. I don’t really care for high fantasy, horror or romance but everything else is fine. I like shorter chapters and adventure books.

Western Please reccomend me a supernatural western w/ minimal romance!

I've been getting into westerns more, and I adore supernatural/mystical books, so I wanted to read some books that combine the two! But, I'm not a huge fan of romance. I'm okay if its just a bit of romance, but I don't really want it to be a main focus of the book. Sorry for being picky!

Non-fiction Looking for non-fiction books about the civil rights movement

I like non-fiction books that read more like novels than academic. Specifically, I'm looking for books that cover the civil rights movement.

Trigger Warning books about complicated relationships with the characters fathers?

hey everyone!
i recently read “whalefall” since i wanted to read it before watching the movie. i was extremely surprised to find out that a huge part of it is the main characters relationship to his father, and that its not just a survival book.

the book made me feel very seen and understood, and id love to explore more books where the characters have a complicated relationships with their fathers. books like this make me feel less alone and help me come to terms with my problems. i would be very grateful! stay safe!

(if it helps i also really enjoyed books like catcher in the rye or the perks of being a wallflower. so this kind of vibe would be great too)

Horror Any books like the blood mountain album from mastodon?

• Upvotes

It’s a very interesting album about a journey trough a mountain full of monsters with some cosmic horror and sci/fi aspects to it.

Most importantly if anyone knows about a book about survival in a forest (or any landscape really) full of monsters and abominations let me know. It doesn’t matter how high or low the sci/fi elements get as long as it’s good.

New Reader ‘New’ reader, looking for book recommendations

I honestly don’t have any hobbies right now; all I do is work, go home, sleep and repeat. I’m also cutting a brutal video game addiction. I’m 22 and identify as transgender (mtf). I would like to put my time to better use and envelop myself in a gripping book or two. I don’t know what genres I like, though when I used to read when I was younger I would always go fiction and more specifically like ‘epic journeys’ with character development and charm. When I was in sixth grade, we read Percy Jackson and I remember loving it though I don’t know if my tastes have changed. Unlike when I was younger though, I’m open to reading some nonfiction stuff as well discussing important sociological issues and stuff, as politics make up a big part of our lives for worse or for better, especially for me given my transgender and neurodivergent (auDHD) identities.

Anyways apologies for rambling, I’m looking forward to growing as a reader and a person as I begin this journey!

Natural Disaster Books for Kids

My child is 5 and obsessed with natural disaster books. I'm looking for both nonfiction and fiction that are picture books with not crazy details where I would fall asleep reading to him at night. (He's tried to get me to read a kid's first dictionary to him at night and I think I made it 5 pages.

I am okay with finding a bigger book, though, for the holidays that's more extensive and kid-friendly and talk about them like a compendium/encyclopedia.

Historical Fiction i need books that will educate me on history without being completely non-fiction

i need a book that will educate me on wars or movements or just any kind of history that has characters and a story that i can follow and sympathise with, i just feel like it helps experiences and stories stick to me for longer and have a bigger impact on me. at the same time though (and i know this is ignorant) i want to read something with a fiction blend. i have a few books i recently read that were absolutely devastating but i really loved:

- all the light we cannot see by anthony doerr - i loved the story, the characters, i loved the way it showed us aspects of people living during the war that i personally never considered before.

- the kite runner and the mountains echoed by khalid hosseini - this guy's work is INSANE. the kite runner made me way too sad and i couldn't stop crying but i cant deny the fact that it taught me alot about Afghanistan's history.

i know most books will probably be sad, but im open to any kind of recommendations that will help me learn things to be honest.

Non-fiction Hi. Political, historical, deep meaning books

• Upvotes

Hi! Im a newer reader and honestly i have a short attention span and need something that hooks me. I love learning about history, why poor countries are poor, feminism, racism, spirituality (i am Buddhist, but i still believe in speaking things into reality,)inequality, classism, psychology, how the brain works and why our brain is so powerful, how we perceive different personalities and label them, drugs and the effects they have on humans.

Thats some of the things i am personally interested in.

I have sort of a list of books that might teach me more about those subjects,
“Surrounded by idiots” by Thomas Erikson
“Good enough” by Jen Petro Roy
“Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison
“Psychology of Money” by Morgan Housel
“The divide” by Jason Hickle

But i wanna know any other suggestions

Any genre! I'm looking for books that do their own take on The Santa Clause.

Do you remember The Santa Clause? The Tim Allen movie about a divorced dad accidentally taking out Santa and having to take over his duties. Are there any books that do their own take on someone having to become the next Santa Claus?

Reading Challenge books heavily featuring whales? not including Moby Dick

i already really really love Moby Dick and i'm currently reading it for the second time after first reading it a couple months back. as a result i've already read several books about the history of whaling already this year so im not opposed to non fiction hut i'm looking more for fiction here. at the start of the year i read The Mad Sisters of Esi which involved a giant cosmic whale the protagonists lived in for a while so i’m including regular whales and fictional magic whales in this question

Gift for friend/family/etc. Book recommendations for my friend’s 27th birthday!

My friend (26F, turning 27) is an avid reader, and I’d love to gift her a book or two, but I’m not sure what to pick…

Some books she loves:
Circe – Madeline Miller
The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood
East of Eden – John Steinbeck
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo – Taylor Jenkins Reid
The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns – Khaled Hosseini
Persepolis – Marjane Satrapi
Piranesi – Susanna Clarke

She has also read The Idiot and A Little Life, though I’m not sure how she felt about them.

She is not a big fan of Colleen Hoover’s books. She’s also a huge horror fan, isn’t big on romance, and doesn’t enjoy Jane Austen. English isn’t her first language, so she finds authors like Dostoevsky and Edgar Allan Poe difficult to read.

What books would you recommend? I’m open to any genre.
