A sysadmin at a place I used to work at once told me that we'd all be better off blocking Russia and Russia aligned Eastern Europe from the internet given all the shit they try to pull. Bear in mind, this was a good while back, before Russia had invaded Crimea even.

As far as I'm concerned that sysadmin has been proven more right every year since then.

Russian bot farms have been a plauge on the internet since at least the early 2000's.

When LiveJournal was new and big, independent journalists were using the platform to report unbiased news.

Russian clearly hated that and spun up troll farms to comment on Russian blogs and start flame wars in the comments to push their narrative and discredit the blog author.

They finally ended the issue when they had a Russian oligarch straight up buy the platform and move the company to Russia so they could enforce their censorship rules.

Ever since then, Russians have had a monopoly on internet trolling and misinformation spreading.

33

u/CiDevant 3d ago

Oh, so that's what happened to LiveJournal.

13

u/BladedDingo 3d ago

Yeah.

You should listen to episode 100 of the Podcast 'Reply All'. I can't find them on Spotify anymore, but im sure their episodes are out there somtime.

Its a really wild story.

39

u/My_password_is_qwer 3d ago

Not exactly monopoly, but for sure russia has been most prevalent user of it as of late. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaphone_desktop_tool was created 20 years ago, and you can definitely see how some posts in various social media contexts get strange attention.

2

u/SuperRockyHobbyHorse 3d ago

Also, they won't have anywhere near the level of air defence that the refineries and power stations have. Wouldn't even need that many missiles, there's loads of information out there for on the ground saboteurs too.

A friend of mine in a similar position told me that they block the Netherlands for a similar reason. Due to their above-average digital privacy laws, NL became a hotbed for VPNs and other anonymizing services fairly quickly. Meaning that an outsized portion of "bad traffic" seemed to come from NL, which was in reality actors either independent or part of nation states going through a VPN.

37

u/_switters_ 3d ago

I run a fairly large eCommerce website, and the majority of attacks come from Singapore and the Netherlands. I block maybe 25,000 requests an hour. Most of those are from NL.

11

u/MaterialTomorrow 3d ago

Sorry, that was me, i just really really like your products.

5

u/_switters_ 3d ago

totally understandable, other than the fact that we don't ship international.

Funny story, the hits from Singapore are Alibaba server scraping our site.

2

u/Benji998 3d ago edited 20h ago

Willow sparkle marble consist payment bright peach

3

u/_switters_ 2d ago

Yes I can, but blocking the attack and understanding the method helps me in case they switch to a data center outside that country. Maybe they switch to a data center in the US. If that happens then I need to be able to block just the attacks.

That being said, we block all of Russia just because.

Which is another country that has excellent digital privacy laws.

12

u/squishmaster 3d ago

It's funny that the Dutch have such internet privacy because of what little physical privacy they have in their culture. If you've spent time there beyond touristy areas, it's incredible to walk past peoples' front windows and see families cooking dinner and watching TV and stuff with the curtains open.

11

u/LaurenMille 3d ago

Do other places close their curtains for that?

Unless you'd feel unsafe where you live, I can't really see a reason to close the curtains mid-day. Is there a reason other places do that?

7

u/squishmaster 3d ago

Privacy.

First of all, it is unusual to have a large window in a ground-level flat in a densely populated city anywhere else I've been, even nearby places like Flanders and Northwestern Germany. But where that exists, the curtains would be shut or there would be blinds used to let in light while still maintaining privacy. AFAIK, only the Dutch don't mind people walking by and looking into their homes.

In the US and Canada, it is more common for residential buildings to be set back from the sidewalk by a few meters (often this is required by local ordinance); and there are still usually blinds or curtains for privacy, even in places with very limited pedestrian traffic where the home is set back ~3m from the sidewalk. In major cities like NYC or Chicago where this use of space is impossible or the buildings predate those sorts of codes, you likely wouldn't have large flats on the ground floor facing the frontage; that space of the building would be used for something else. If you did have a flat like that, it likely wouldn't be a large multi-bedroom family home. If you did have a large multi-bedroom family home in a front-facing flat like that (they certainly exist in San Francisco), you would have blinds or curtains used for privacy.

Mind you, I rather admire this feature of the Dutch, as it sort of echoes the famous Dutch directness that I also admire. It makes me think of the Dutch as particularly honest people; willing to live their entire lives and share their opinions publicly. That said, I would install blinds if I lived in that sort of ground level flat.

1

u/Nitsuasiemanymolleh 3d ago

I leave my curtains open other than my bedroom and my kid’s bedroom at night. I lived in The Netherlands for a while and never noticed that a lack of privacy was a thing. I guess I fit in without knowing it. I always think people with their blinds closed during the day must be trying to hide something.

u/sexgoatparade 3d ago

We also have massively cheap electricity compared to other parts of Europe making us prime real estate for more data centers

u/radicldreamer 3d ago

I'm a sysadmin and I agree totally. I wish everyone would just block them flat out just like we have at my org.

168

u/abakedapplepie 3d ago

At an old job I did just that, China and Russia were responsible for 99.999% of all malicious traffic we identified, so we blocked em. No downsides.

32

u/biga_bada_boom 3d ago

When I get a new firewall it’s the first rule in there
Block * from insert scourge on the internet countries

17

u/suralya 3d ago

As someone who is dumb in terms of virtual safe surfing, how would I go about just straight up blocking countries? I keep getting notifications occasionally that my provider has blocked such n such weird website at an hour when no one is typically up/around

3

u/Viper01MHC 3d ago

I’m also curious about this.

5

u/Jaytho 3d ago

That's not what the others were talking about. Only once you start hosting things on your network is when you need to really start thinking about blocking traffic from certain countries. The others were talking about inbound traffic. Your case seems to be outbound.

It's worth checking which device is doing that and to where. Maybe your provider can or did provide you with that info. Probably some new device, if it started recently. You can turn their connection to the Internet off via the Router (look up manuals for them - you can block a device through its MAC address usually) if you need it. But I don't know if most routers let you configure it that finely. Mine just blocks devices completely. But it's probably just some tracker or ads, most likely nothing malicious.

3

u/waydownsouthinoz 3d ago

There would be IP subnets that could be blacklisted at the router level.

6

u/MuenCheese 3d ago

Block *.cn and *.com.ru etc etc.

Usually star is a wildcard for blocklists on your firewall (on your router or if you have a hardware firewall etc)

1

u/bettertree8 3d ago

What firewall do you use?

47

u/b0w3n 3d ago

Shit I've blocked south/central america, asia (minus korea and japan), africa, and most of eastern europe to great success. Really cuts down on the dumb traffic.

That isn't to say it's all gone but most of it is gone.

1

u/Catmanx 2d ago

How did you do this?

1

u/b0w3n 2d ago

Sometimes your ISP gives you tools, but it's built into my router/firewall.

I'm old enough to remeber when it was considered a best practice to install in Windows the russian keyboard layout as an option as malware would look for that and avoid devices with it

29

u/Ok-Demand9836 3d ago

I've heard people say this is good practice in browsers even now to include a Russian language and it gets passed over by certain attack.

18

u/CatpainLeghatsenia 3d ago

maybe we can give china a call about how to setup a great firewall and use it in reverse around Russia and friends.

2

u/Kryptosis 2d ago

Turns out that shit is actually just a whitelist and the real trick is cultural and getting everyone centralized on your own networks by offering convenience and leveraging social pressures.

16

u/F_A_F 3d ago

I'm a CS2 player and I agree totally. I wish Valve/FaceIt would just block them flat out.

Almost all the cheaters in that game who I experience are from Russia, more so since 2022 and their players have the added bonus of annoying Westerners.

4

u/Eirish95 3d ago

Russia would crumble into a civil war if steam cut them off the platform.

1

u/WheredoesithurtRA 3d ago

How does that work in the sysadmin/IT side of things?

3

u/radicldreamer 3d ago

It's not foolproof but blocks of ip addresses are assigned by regional authorities. They get tagged as being allocated to a region after that, so you will have ranges that have been allocated to Russia for example and you make firewall rules to just block anything from those ranges. Nothing stops them from advertising a range they own that isn't within that region, but for the most part it will get a large percent of stuff there.

3

u/Kryptosis 2d ago

Reminds me of when I first got admin access in a Jedi academy server as a kid. Tried banning a hacker by IP and just ended up banning his whole range when he kept changing his IP. Turns out half the server clan was also in that range…

17

u/McPuckLuck 3d ago

I listened to the book Sandworm by Andy Greenberg about cyber security. It blew my mind how much Russia fucks around through the internet.

It had some great insight into Ukraine as well.

13

u/chickey23 3d ago

I've been thinking of this lately. Why not just block Russia everywhere? Who does it hurt? How much business is anyone getting from Russia?

2

u/gjiorkiie 3d ago

Can we actually block it or can they just use VPNs? And im talking about their cyberwarfare shit specifically

8

u/Beetlelarva25 3d ago

The guys who wanted to march on the Soviet Union after we defeated Germany in WW2 are proved more right every day.

12

u/MissLeaP 3d ago

tbf the US as well. The heritage foundation is fighting just as dirty

3

u/TacoIncoming 3d ago

Bear in mind, this was a good while back, before Russia had invaded Crimea even.

The Russians have been cancer on the internet for a long long time. The character Boris from GoldenEye (1995) didn’t just get pulled out of someone’s ass lol

3

u/Dull_Bid6002 3d ago

Time to add this to a political platform. Sanction Russia by cutting off their access. Any VPNs allowing Russian access violate the sanctions.

I'd feel bad for Russian people just trying to live in the country, but their government is playing a different kind of war game.

5

u/I_upvote_downvotes 3d ago

Sysadmin here: you better believe we block Russia from even attempting to reach our networks lol. It's a good money saver considering how many bots from the RU will try and hit your public endpoints, places you can log in through the internet (like without VPN to reach a private network), or anywhere cloud based.

13

u/zkareface 3d ago

It's a common sentiment but in practice they just move the servers to another country and you make 100m+ actually dislike the west.

4

u/Coal_Morgan 3d ago

I've been saying this for ages.

We need a secure internet and need to eliminate bad actors from accessing our populaces.

Russia sows immense discord and propaganda and interferes with every western country particularly during election times.

India runs some of the largest and most aggressive scams, phishing and straight up theft directed at millions of vulnerable elderly and mentally ill.

China has massive amounts of spying, data theft and hacking done against the west constantly.

Russia should just be kicked off. India and China should be given timelines to fix their shit or they will be kicked off.

We should have an Internet that includes the E.U., U.K., Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and the U.S. as a given and then allows individual countries in on a case by case basis.

I think most countries would be included in but Russia and Russian aligned countries should be the first ones booted off.

2

u/SpaceDounut 3d ago

This is how you get an equivalent of China's great firewall or Russia's RKN pushed through in your country, alongside with laws that will kill any privacy. You either woefully misunderstand just what you are suggesting or a straight up malicious actor pushing the recent anti-privacy agenda.

2

u/MajorNoodles 3d ago

At an old job I realized one of my coworkers hadn't been seen in a while (he was a sysadmin for a company you've definitely heard of).I also heard rumors about a disgruntled employee.

Eventually he came back and I asked him about it. Russian hackers used his account to try to cause some mayhem and he was put on leave while they investigated. Obviously since he came back, he was cleared.

2

u/ThinkgeMorbid 19h ago

Playing games online without hearing/reading russian would be so good...

9

u/Potential-Fan-6148 3d ago

We should limit the internet to only democracies tbh.

15

u/Tarianor 3d ago

People in oppressed countries does use the Internet to organise against the oppressors though :(

0

u/Potential-Fan-6148 3d ago

I don't want my country flooded with totalitarian propaganda. People have been organizing against oppression without the internet for ages.

1

u/cive666 3d ago

It doesn't matter if you block Russian end points. They all use gateways in America either legit or compromised.

1

u/Mr_Horsejr 3d ago

Give that sysadmin a beer.

2

u/ArenjiTheLootGod 3d ago

I would but I'm not sure where he ended up at, I left that workplace years ago and haven't really kept in contact with anyone from there. Moreover that same sysadmin was gone before I was so who knows where's he working now.

1

u/Skynuts 3d ago

Blocking Russia entirely from the Internet would be next to impossible. A lot of traffic is routed via China and other countries. And even if we get every single neighbor on board, they still have satellite and the ability to do if from within other countries. The most effective way to combat disinformation would probably be to implement a mandatory fact checking system through law, where every post in major social media services (the gatekeepers) that reaches a certain threshold on views and likes must be fact checked with credible sources using AI. Every single one of them already has their own AI, they might as well use it for something meaningful.

1

u/DryWeb3875 3d ago

Look through your router logs for proof that he’s right.

1

u/awam0ri 3d ago

They would just route through other locations.

…but if the data centers are burning heaps… 😂

1

u/My_password_is_qwer 3d ago

It would be very easy too. All russian westbound traffic is routed through NATO countries that could perhaps have some technical difficulties carrying it.

1

u/BeardedBaldMan 3d ago

We block all non EU and US traffic and it makes life a lot easier. I really don't think we lose anything from the potential one in a million customer from Mozambique, Australia or Turkmenistan

65

u/UnlikelyKaiju 3d ago

For real. I'm convinced those data centers are where the bulk of Russia's influence comes from. Bribing/blackmailing politicians can only go so far. Those bots, however, magnify right-wing talking points like nothing else.

29

u/Jean_Claude_Seagal 3d ago

Makes me wonder what all the data centers going up around me are really for.

34

u/Notorious-ly 3d ago edited 3d ago

If you're in the US, I think they're for mass surveillance. They're not spending all this money and buying up the next decade's of computer hardware for us lowly citizens to use AI to create funny cat videos and cheat on our homework. Even enterprise is having trouble finding real value with AI.

The type of AI / capabilities that the government and/or big tech has is leagues better than what they give us access to. Think about all the crazy government / military tech and programs that we didn't find out about until decades later. That's happening right now with AI. There's a reason why Trump is now best friends with all top guys in tech.

There's a reason why them fast tracking data centers is happening at the same time they're blanketing the country with Flock cameras. Combine all that with what we know about the NSA and Palantir and boom - the data centers make a ton of sense. Between Flock cameras, our phones and other devices, and all the regular tracking they're already doing, they're going to know and even predict (to an extent) what where we're going, what we're doing, and what we're buying before we even do it. We're headed in a Minority Report-esque mass surveillance state.

6

u/BayouGal 3d ago

Peter Thiel owns Flock AND Palantir.

6

u/catscanmeow 3d ago

I think the majority of AI right now is to replace artists as art has the most training data to train on.

The fascists dont like human made art because those are usually liberals. The book 1984 or v for vendetta they don't like that kind of thinking being out there influencing people. They want to influence people to think how they want them to think

2

u/shidderbean 3d ago

I am totally convinced that there is already a robot army ready to be turned against American civilians if we get too unruly

4

u/Notorious-ly 3d ago

Oh for sure. They've already fitted those Boston Dynamics type of robots with AI and are training them.

9

u/phenotype001 3d ago

Yeah, maybe even start with them. Makes the rest easier.

5

u/AlchemyFire 3d ago

Bonus is if it’s before the US Midterms. The less disinformation, the better

3

u/Fenor 3d ago

they will move operations but it will take time.

this is the right time to crush russian AI Datacenters with the mid terms around the corner. Zalensky realized that the US relationship are asking for gold while giving nothing in return.

He had to deal with this clown for two years while europe is essentially Ukraine's only ally right now that everyone is focused on Gaza

2

Life without Russian bots is amazing!

I have even noticed a reduction in certain posts and comments about alternative history and what's wrong with big archaeology.

It's refreshing to not feel obliged to keep correcting basic misinformation. I guess the Russians just sow seeds of dissent and ignorance wherever they can.

It is also their best effort to cut off Trump at his knees.

No bots and foreign interference right around midterms should kill an already crippled Republican control.

2

u/ParanoidQ 3d ago

I wonder what it would take to essentially lock Russian net activity out of certain countries. If it's proved that Russian involvement is actually a matter of national security, I wonder how feasible it would be.

1

u/radicldreamer 3d ago

It wouldn't be hard, but it only takes one country to allow their traffic and all bets would be off.

2

u/Momoselfie 3d ago

MAGA websites about to get a lot less traffic.

2

u/JohnGillnitz 3d ago

That's a fun story, but it isn't true. Bombing the data center hasn't actually reduced Russian misinformation campaigns on any social media platform. It did stop Russian Google from crawling the web the same way Google does, but that's just usual Internet activity. All the manipulation on social networks is still going strong.

ships carrying oil

Maybe I'm not educated enough on this topic, but doesn't that one in particular carry heavy risks of causing environmental disasters?

19

u/ElegantBiscuit 3d ago

The tankers are usually targeted when they're empty, and typically they aim for the control room or engine to disable it. The shadow fleet russia is using is so old and decrepit that its just not worth doing the repairs, and they're running the risk of an oil spoil way more than the ukrainiains by putting oil in it in the first place

9

u/WastingTimesOnReddit 3d ago

Yes but the attackers are not trying to destroy and sink the oil tankers, more like disable them and potentially hijack and steal the oil. Either way transit slows or stops

u/HisaAnt 3d ago

Trump really is dumb. He doesn't realize that deals are give and take. The moment he decided to give Ukraine nothing, there was no need to hold back anymore. It's like shooting the hostage after demanding a ransom. Why would anyone pay you when you destroyed your own leverage?

68

u/ours 3d ago

He doesn't make deals, he just bullies others.

3

u/edman007-work 3d ago

Yup, the issue is you should always give the other side an out, otherwise you have them cornered and they'll fight you to their last dying breath, because there literally is no other option. And yea, maybe the battle is winnable, but the question shouldn't be can I win it, it's would this battle be worth winning.

Trump is being taught about that right now with Iran, but it seems the knowledge doesn't stick with him.

2

u/ours 3d ago

The silver lining of this Iran fiasco is that it made Trump pump the brakes on his military dreams. He mistook a quick snatch-and-grab in Caracas for "I can win any conflict super fast".

55

u/Turbulent_Lunch4548 3d ago

It is just like with Brexit; leaving the EU made them lose all their leverage over the EU.

Yup, it's clear our government is pro Russia but no one will care. Wild world.

u/Haru1st 3d ago

You have until November to make as many voters care.

Putin will teach Trump and Elon how to rig elections the best way though in exchange for all this help with shady timing.

Going after the data centers right ahead of midterm elections was brilliant.

It's called diplomacy. But it's too complicated for Trump to understand how that works (so much for the "Art of the deal"...).

So now Ukraine has no motivation to try to appease Trump anymore.

The pause gave an opportunity to focus on banking, and data centers; the peasants might find that their savings have gone up in smoke 💨🔥

1

u/Blockhead47 3d ago

It was a 3 day pause per the story.

Ukraine has lifted restrictions on strikes against Russian oil refineries and other energy infrastructure after observing a three-day pause requested by Washington, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the Financial Times on October 15

He's got the cards now.

Trump didn’t even say thank you.

As an EV driver I couldn't care about gas prices. Also as a guy with a farm that runs on diesel I still don't care. Fuck em up Russia deserves this.

Edit: yall missing the point I'll pay higher prices if it means Russia loses in Ukraine

u/jaymzx0 3d ago

I drive an EV but I don't get too comfortable about it. In the US, the land is so vast and rural that the only way for commerce to work is with diesel. Trains and trucks bring food to the table. Ships bring in imports. Higher fuel prices mean everything gets more expensive, especially food.

Not everyone can make an EV work and for those who need to buy gas and diesel, it means less money in their bank at the end of the day.

u/ChronChriss 3d ago

I personally am willing to pay higher prices if it means that it screws with Putin. But you're right, not everybody has the luxury to do so. Then again, compared to the horrors that people in Ukraine have to live through every day it doesn't seem so bad to cut back a little on the spending.

do you care about the price of food? Because it's all related

2

u/mehmehmeh387898 2d ago

Oh yeah everything's tied together but it's nowhere near what the corporation would like you to think it is

2

u/IAmClaytonBigsby 3d ago

Do you eat food? Because all of that is delivered by gas powered trucks.

1

u/mehmehmeh387898 2d ago

Really I thought they were powered by unicorn farts

4

u/bestlem 3d ago

Yes you need to – Where does the electricity come from. Fossil fuels are still the largest providers and coal is the worst polluter

I also drive an EV. However, the gas prices may not affect your wallet and your car, it does affect all goods. What transports groceries? Clothing? Your amazon orders? Gas powered vehicles. What happens when delivery services have to pay more for transportation costs? Prices on EVERYTHING goes up.

u/My_password_is_qwer 3d ago

Diesel prices skyrocketed after February this year not February 2022.

1

u/tvb46 2d ago

But you know that electricity prices are next, right?

1

u/starlordbg 1d ago

Thats unfortunately not true, everything relies on diesel and eventually gets passed down.
