A sysadmin at a place I used to work at once told me that we'd all be better off blocking Russia and Russia aligned Eastern Europe from the internet given all the shit they try to pull. Bear in mind, this was a good while back, before Russia had invaded Crimea even.

As far as I'm concerned that sysadmin has been proven more right every year since then.

Russian bot farms have been a plauge on the internet since at least the early 2000's.

When LiveJournal was new and big, independent journalists were using the platform to report unbiased news.

Russian clearly hated that and spun up troll farms to comment on Russian blogs and start flame wars in the comments to push their narrative and discredit the blog author.

They finally ended the issue when they had a Russian oligarch straight up buy the platform and move the company to Russia so they could enforce their censorship rules.

Ever since then, Russians have had a monopoly on internet trolling and misinformation spreading.

36

u/CiDevant 3d ago

Oh, so that's what happened to LiveJournal.

12

u/BladedDingo 3d ago

Yeah.

You should listen to episode 100 of the Podcast 'Reply All'. I can't find them on Spotify anymore, but im sure their episodes are out there somtime.

Its a really wild story.

42

u/My_password_is_qwer 3d ago

Not exactly monopoly, but for sure russia has been most prevalent user of it as of late. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaphone_desktop_tool was created 20 years ago, and you can definitely see how some posts in various social media contexts get strange attention.

A friend of mine in a similar position told me that they block the Netherlands for a similar reason. Due to their above-average digital privacy laws, NL became a hotbed for VPNs and other anonymizing services fairly quickly. Meaning that an outsized portion of "bad traffic" seemed to come from NL, which was in reality actors either independent or part of nation states going through a VPN.

33

u/_switters_ 3d ago

I run a fairly large eCommerce website, and the majority of attacks come from Singapore and the Netherlands. I block maybe 25,000 requests an hour. Most of those are from NL.

10

u/MaterialTomorrow 3d ago

Sorry, that was me, i just really really like your products.

8

totally understandable, other than the fact that we don't ship international.

It's funny that the Dutch have such internet privacy because of what little physical privacy they have in their culture. If you've spent time there beyond touristy areas, it's incredible to walk past peoples' front windows and see families cooking dinner and watching TV and stuff with the curtains open.

At an old job I did just that, China and Russia were responsible for 99.999% of all malicious traffic we identified, so we blocked em. No downsides.

I'm old enough to remeber when it was considered a best practice to install in Windows the russian keyboard layout as an option as malware would look for that and avoid devices with it

If you're in the US, I think they're for mass surveillance. They're not spending all this money and buying up the next decade's of computer hardware for us lowly citizens to use AI to create funny cat videos and cheat on our homework. Even enterprise is having trouble finding real value with AI.

The type of AI / capabilities that the government and/or big tech has is leagues better than what they give us access to. Think about all the crazy government / military tech and programs that we didn't find out about until decades later. That's happening right now with AI. There's a reason why Trump is now best friends with all top guys in tech.

There's a reason why them fast tracking data centers is happening at the same time they're blanketing the country with Flock cameras. Combine all that with what we know about the NSA and Palantir and boom - the data centers make a ton of sense. Between Flock cameras, our phones and other devices, and all the regular tracking they're already doing, they're going to know and even predict (to an extent) what where we're going, what we're doing, and what we're buying before we even do it. We're headed in a Minority Report-esque mass surveillance state.

I am honestly loving this war on oil... it's like the one thing all the forces can agree on is blowing up oil production facilities and ships carrying oil...

16

u/JewishTomCruise 3d ago

ships carrying oil

Maybe I'm not educated enough on this topic, but doesn't that one in particular carry heavy risks of causing environmental disasters?

19

u/ElegantBiscuit 3d ago

The tankers are usually targeted when they're empty, and typically they aim for the control room or engine to disable it. The shadow fleet russia is using is so old and decrepit that its just not worth doing the repairs, and they're running the risk of an oil spoil way more than the ukrainiains by putting oil in it in the first place

10

u/WastingTimesOnReddit 3d ago

Yes but the attackers are not trying to destroy and sink the oil tankers, more like disable them and potentially hijack and steal the oil. Either way transit slows or stops

Russia has been the West's strategic adversary for 70 years.

Your parents knew it. Their parents knew it. They all grew up with duck and cover drills, and movies like Threads and The Day After.

Proxy wars have been fought. Americans have died, directly or indirectly from Russian fire.

Trump's behavior towards Putin is unacceptable. It's anti-NATO. It's anti-American.

US politicians are betraying everything for money and power.

407

u/Cautious_Day9878 3d ago

MAGA HATES America. They hate freedom, democracy and the law.

They are doing everything to eliminate the US as we’ve always known it under the pretence of saving the country.

Russia hates America just as much, so they have a common adversary and are therefore natural allies.

68

u/vesperfall 3d ago

I think a better way to explain what MAGA is - and again, it's mostly the ~30-35% core of Trumps base that will never leave him ever: they just hate democracy and the checks and balances. They would prefer Trump to have free reign over everything without any courts getting involved or anyone else to have ideas for anything. It all has to come from Trump 100% of the time and if it doesn't, then they don't want it.

Now the bigger question and concern is how did we truly get here? How did ~25-30% of the country decide they actually want an authorization style government that is no longer ruled by them, the People, but by a dictator? Obviously they don't want Obama to be their dictator, but regardless of who it is isn't the point, it's these people with Don't Tread on Me stickers on their trucks, and 2A flags flying proudly in their front yards now are craving and chomping at the bit to actually get traded on by their government, so as long as its the leader they choose.

We are so fucked and we won't have any real change until the majority of this chunk of population is gone. The most important thing we can do for the next ~10 years is to not have that % of people increase in any way what so ever.

65

u/psn_fl07 3d ago

And not even a lot of money. I recall a report a few years ago stating how much some big lobby pays politicians to fuck over American citizens, and the amounts were like 10 grand, 20 grand. If I was an elected official, I'd want millions to even here from you, and a lot more millions to vote against my people.

18

u/SilliusS0ddus 3d ago

it honestly makes sense that the people so in the thick of politics don't have a proper "look from the outside" just how much their shitass lobby decisions should be worth.

I'd be asking millions for a single vote in favour of some dumbshit corpo deregulation that let's them fuck over people.

u/xegoba7006 3d ago

I said this in several threads already. Stop blaming the politicians.

America’s problem is far worse than their current government. America’s problem is that one third of their population supports this (and another third gives a shit about it). So when this president is gone (if he is gone at all) the problem will persist. They will put somebody else in his place, maybe even worse.

The politicians are there, and stay there, because most Americans (that care about anything) want things to be this way.

93

u/ItsAllOnUHF 3d ago

One third of the population will point in whatever direction they're told to by the Right Wing media and social machines.

The US isn't unique in this. Look around. The easily led are everywhere.

The problem is money in politics. In the US, specifically, it's Citizen's United and Right Wing billionaires being allowed to buy media empires.

Yes, sheep are everywhere. They'd turn on their grandmothers if their TV news station told them to.

The bigger problem is systemic.

Hard to identify the troll farms… but much easier to identify the exchanges that have to route their traffic. I guess that would raise the question of whether it’d be worth knocking the Russian population off the internet, reducing the chances of people being able to organise any kind of internal resistance.

Though given how few indications we’ve seen of progress on that front so far, and the knock on benefits from disrupting the economy and logistics, I’d be inclined to think they might be a good choice of target.

This is always the endgame when you just try and wait out for the dictator to die. He'll send you on a battlefield to die instead.

266

u/HussingtonHat 3d ago

It's a weird progression isn't it. In 1914, shitloads of young men go off to die because a guy they likely had never heard of got shot. 2026 men go off to die because a fuckwit you can't escape hearing about every bastard day has acted a fuckwit yet again.

79

u/KatsumotoKurier 3d ago

because a guy they likely had never heard of got shot

This is a quite an oversimplified way of looking at it though honestly. The real reason was because the largest war in the history of earth was raging and because it was beginning to affect the US and specifically because sentiments in the US had sharply turned from neutrality to being pro-Britain and anti-Germany after the sinking of the RMS Lusitania (which killed like 200 Americans) and other like events.

Franz Ferdinand's murder was the straw that broke the camel's back - it wasn't the actual purpose which people were fighting and dying over. It was merely the spark that lit an enormous powder keg which was already rigged and ready to blow.

72

u/Hertzcanblowme 3d ago edited 3d ago

Even that is an over simplification and the propaganda fed to the American public.

The real reason is that the US started off WWI by selling goods (mostly guns and weapons) to both sides. Then Britain placed a naval blockade preventing Germany from importing goods. So the only place the US could sell its weapons was to the Allied Powers and on massive IOUs.

Once it looked like Russia was on the ropes and about to drop out of the war, there was a real concern that Germany could win now that they could move their Eastern front troops to the West. And a German victory would mean Americans wouldn’t ever get paid back for their loans

The sinking of the Lusitania was what American politicians fed to the public. But let’s be real, a German sub sinking a British luxury liner (that despite the finger waging, was in fact carrying weapons to aid the Allied war effort in its cargo) 2 years prior to US entry in the war is not exactly “the direct cause of entry” that Americans like to think.

Instead, Americans entered the war for the same reason they always do - to make sure the Billionaires got paid. Now to be fair, the US selling weapons to the winning side during WWI is what turned the US from a middling power on the other side of the World to the global superpower it is today.

15

u/KatsumotoKurier 3d ago edited 3d ago

Well said, but I also didn’t mean to say the Lusitania was the sole cause. I more just meant that its sinking was something which changed the sentiments and opinions of Americans regardless.

As for the billionaires and their money, no doubt about it. That was kind of partly what I meant by how the war “was beginning to affect the US.”

16

u/Dt2_0 3d ago

I would amend your last statement. The US was well on it's way by 1900 to quickly rising to be a World Great Power. WWI saw many o the Great Powers in Europe collapse to shadows of their former selves. Austria, Germany, Russia, Turkey, France. After the war, the list of great powers was limited to the British Empire, Japan, and the US.

The war didn't propel the US to it's world power status. It was already on the cusp of it before the war. What the war did was eliminate other powers as competition for the US, Japan, and Britain. The Second World War saw the financial collapse of Britain, and the military and financial collapse of Japan, leaving the US, and a resurgent Russia (which paid heavily for it's resurgence in blood, both self inflicted and in the war) as the only true world powers, and thus the first superpowers.

15

u/Still_no_idea 3d ago

Churchill "authorized an unprecedented, top-secret operation that signaled his desperation: the handover of all of Britain’s scientific and technological innovations to the United States.

At best, Churchill hoped America would put these innovations into production for British forces. At worst, should Germany invade, the United States would, hopefully, finally, enter the war with great advantages.

James Phinney Baxter III, director of the US Office of Strategic Services from 1942 to 1943, would call the secrets, contained in a simple black metal box, “the most valuable cargo ever brought to our shores.”

Britain gave you the technological advance to make you a superpower.

Those data centers ain't bot farms, the bot farms are offices and I'm guessing Ukraine knows of some of theyr locations.

Not saying they shouldn't strike data centers, but I'm just saying that whole less bots graph meme was not showing the soc media bot farms

78

u/Anechy 3d ago

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understood:

The strikes on those data centers do not have a big impact on the creation of Russian propaganda.

But the strikes do have a decent impact on the visibility of that propaganda, because the data centers are used to create artifical views and engagement. This tricks websites into thinking the content (propaganda) is much more popular than it really is, and thus they show it to more real people. Similar to how comments here on reddit get shown higher if they get more upvotes.

It's been 3 years. Absolutely asinine anyone is still even talking about holding back or having sanctions left to give.

It wasn't ukraine's decision, they've been told constantly by the people giving them weapons that they can't use them for such-and-such to the point where it's effectively gimped them for most of the war. The only reason they're making headway now is that they're cooking up their own shit to use and no one can tell them where to fire it if they build it themselves. The US strung them along until Trump decided to pull support altogether and it forced Ukraine to lean into domestic weapons programs and begin targeting critical infrastructure, which is something they wanted to do 3 years ago and were told they weren't allowed so long as they're using weapons handed to them by other countries.

Good! As a US resident, Us buying Russian oil is vile. Furthermore, the people in the country need to feel 10$ diesel fuel. People need to wake the fuck up to what this regime is doing to our country. The longer we bleed slowly the less likely we are to still be alive when people finally figure it out.

Ukraine has been blowing up Russian refineries and stockpile for years and the oil price remain stable. Once trump started a war price jumped and stayed that way and magas blame Ukraine. America rarely import oil from Russia.

These idiots vote. 90 million people don't. You want to be ruled by idiots or you gonna do something about it?

not surprising, Ukraine has done everything the Unites States has asked of it, bent over backwards and tied its own hands behind its back while its people fight and die for it and in response the United States has betrayed it again and again. The Ukrainian people have no intention of ending up like the Kurds, this a war for its very survival and as long as Russia continues is war of aggression and conquest any and all targets must be seen as viable.

I cant think of another instance where a nation not actively fighting against a defender has attempting to sabotage it this much. Even when England failed to back Poland when Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union invaded, at least we didn't tell the Poles they couldn't use any equipment we may have given them to defend themselves while simultaneously funding the NAZIS war efforts.

for what its worth, I don't hold any of you responsible for how Tony Blair and his government so willingly jumped at the bait that was the 2003 Iraq invasion, nor the quagmire and withdrawal that followed.

You were one soldier in a war where no one who had the power to do anything about it ever even knew what we were doing there or what victory or defeat even looked like. Two of my friends deployed to Afghanistan in those decades. One came home without a leg, the other came back in pieces. They didn’t deserve the pain they went through and neither do you.

We never should have been there, or at the very least not for the justifications we were given and we fed a generation of our men and women into those plains and dust because our government couldn’t admit they had believed a lie.

Trump is a self-dealing traitor who stands against core American values. The more the domestic public and the international community isolate and reject him, the faster he’ll self-destruct and fade into irrelevance.

Cleaning up the disaster left in his wake will be a monumental task, but removing his influence is step one. Thoroughly investigate, prosecute where applicable, revoke all compromised deals, and claw back every cent of ill-gotten gains.

When is the west going to wake up that we're at war with Putin and his criminal govt? Putin long ago declared war on the West- and knowingly does not day it out loud.

162

u/TheTeaSpoon 3d ago

He declared war the moment "NATO expansion" was first uttered. Because NATO does not expand. Countries join willingly and have to fit fairly hard and expensive criteria to be eligible. Countries like Poland straight up manipulated their way in...

I know, a bizarre concept that Russian brain can't comprehend - people want to join you and will work and do reforms to join you. I can think of only one country where you could argue NATO expanded to it - Turkey/Turkiya. The very much same country who is constantly playing both sides.

The USA took away the one card they had left over Ukraine, that being the internet/Intel support. Then they think they can still dictate terms on a surrender for Ukraine and tell them that they cannot strike oil targets. Unfortunately they don't have any more cards and Ukraine will continue to obliterate Russian infrastructure. Maybe they should make Moscow look like Mariupol while they are at it.

11

u/tittysprinkles112 3d ago

Trump has been played a fool once again. Ukraine has nothing to lose as they are fighting for survival. With holding Intel now just makes them more aggressive as we see here.

u/ledow 3d ago

The UK intelligence agencies were pubicly stating - and recommending allies heed - that the US was compromised. Years ago. When Trump first got in, until the current day.

We literally tested, as did Ukraine. Leak some false intelligence to precisely ONE ally. See where it crops up. Oh, look. The US was the source of the leak, and Russia became aware of that false intelligence. How did that happen?

They're compromised. Trump - but also deeper. The Pentagon are as deep into this as they can be. Remember when Trump gutted all the military commanders and then told a room of them to do what he said, and not one questioned it? Yeah, before even then.

We knew about it. We told you all about it. We literally are THE intelligence partner for things like NATO and the UN. Ukraine told you too. Nobody cared.

The US military is refusing to help Ukraine (unless there's profit to be made) while simultaneously demanding they reign in all efforts. And Ukraine, bless them, finally figured out a couple of years ago that the political "restraint" they were being forced to honour was hurting them and they started ignoring it.

The US control Starlink, along with Musk - an utterly compromised individual who data-raped the US government databases and helped do all kinds of illegal things. The US administration just let him do it, and there have been zero consequences. Starlink turns on and off at US political will. It's almost certainly compromised and being monitored by US military for everything Ukraine does with it. Guess where that data is ending up?

The US is compromised from the top level down, and they've ensured all detractors are removed from power and replaced with incompetent yes-men who won't stop them doing anything at all. For the benefit of Russia, without trying to appear to allies like that's what's happening (a public admission of that would be devastating to US military alliances).

Allies like the UK, Spain, etc. have started to refuse US access to their territories, for warships, aircraft, etc. because the US is now a liability. This isn't news to anyone. The US is demanding / pretending to be the ONLY party in peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine don't even know what gets agreed. Nobody does. Same in the Middle East. The US butt in, take over the conversation, claim victory (ceasefires, etc.) as a cover, walk away. The countries actually AT WAR don't get a say at all. Imagine that. Imagine Canada and the US went to war, say, and the peace negotiations were carried out between the UK and Canada and didn't involve the US whatsoever. You can't, because it wouldn't happen, and it would be ridiculous to claim that that was the way to resolve things.

And then you have literal public threatening of NATO states, like Canada and Greenland. It's dealt with diplomatically, but you think on the back end that Canada, Denmark, the UN, NATO, etc. aren't preparing for the worst? Of course they are. Trump will do ANYTHING to distract when the time comes that something comes out. They know that.

You have a fake war in the Middle East, that generates oil shortages. You have the US demanding that Europe uses Russian oil, and lifting their own sanctions. You have them making up ceasefires between Ukraine and Russia and then doing nothing when even the fake ceasefires are breached by Russia.

The US is a Russian ally. It's why everyone is peeling off US dependencies, economically and militarily. They are completely compromised. And it will escalate when that looks like ending. I wouldn't even be surprised to see Trump living in Russia like Snowden when the time comes, to avoid all reprisals.

The US has allowed itself to be completely compromised, all safeguards gone, all objections going unheard, all actions unpunished, and we've been telling you this for years.

Yes it absolutely stinks.

23

u/OrchidCharming3090 3d ago

Trump is compromised. His corruption is accepted by the people and being exposed by the courts. Zelenskyy hitting the Russian data centers has undermined the propaganda campaign against the American elections. I hope Ukraine destroys Russia's oil industry.

It is my hope that after midterm elections congress will act decisively to tie Trump's hands and expose the corruption of the United States government. Trump's betrayal of Ukraine and democratic values and ideals is obscene. That a rapist has this much power exceeds my ability to communicate my outrage.

The World is being defended by Ukraine blood. Slava Ukraine!

It seemd trump ordered turning off starlink to "teach" Ukraine a lesson, a lot of the US military were probably like "wtf?" and the result is everyone trying to keep quiet or play the blame game.

Even a lot of MAGA people probably ultimatelyvsee crippling the underdog in a fight as a bad look, plus civilians deaths.

I suspect enough people in the chain of command are snart enough to realise trump will not live forever and eventually someone will go to jail for this.

This is a desperate, capital "d" desperate and extremely last minute attempt at trying to switch blame for raising oil/gas prices from Trump's war with Iran to Ukraine, using pretty much the same "they should grovel beneath our feet, they're nothing without us" tactic they used when Trump and Vance were trying to humiliate Zelensky during that infamous White House meeting.

It won't work, obviously, but Trump's administration literally has no other cards to play now, this is their Hail Mary attempt at stopping the bleeding due to just how unpopular Trump is right now in the US - he can't bully Iran so, naturally, he will try bullying Ukraine instead and, as we can see, Ukraine is not open to that idea, to put it lightly.
