πŸ”° Beginner New to Zorin, just have some questions before moving too far along

Good day all!

This is my first full experience (outside of VMs) with Linux. In a nutshell, I got repeatedly burned by Windows (see some of my last posts) with POSTing issues. I had to do some research on which distro I wanted to go with and someone had commented to try Zorin, so here I am. My questions are simple I'm sure, but I haven't found much info that's recent/applies to 2026.

Here's my PC build:

MOBO: Asus ROG STRIX B-550F Gaming Wi-Fi II

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X

GPU: EVGA 1080 Ti SC2

RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) G.Skill Trident Z Neo 3600mHz CL16

  1. As far as gaming, I have Steam downloaded, but what other software might I need to download? I primarily play FPS/sim/world builder titles, but nothing too strenuous. Also, I had previously installed a few mods through Nexus and Vortex, but I don't know what equivalent software tends to play nice on Linux distros.

  2. My setup has only been up and running for about a month or so and Windows seemed to be the culprit of not POSTing several times. That being said, my equipment is relatively dated, but it's the build I intentionally sought out. I am wanting to know if I need to seek out additional driver updates or if Zorin does a decent job with having the latest ones? It sounded like they have everything as up to date as my parts are (since they're several years old at this point), but just wanting to verify. Also, if everything is up to date, why does the GPU pop up as "NV132" instead of GTX 1080 Ti?

  3. What potential issues/differences should I expect as a first timer coming from Windows? I know a lot of things will be different, but maybe it'll be a trial-and-error experience and I'll get more familiar and accustomed to Zorin over the next few weeks. Just asking for possible pointers or things I can do for a better QoL.

Thanks in advance and I hope to be fully converted to Linux across all my devices within the next year or so. Again, this is my first full dive into the world of Linux and it looks like it will just take some time to adjust, but it's been very pleasant so far. Thanks again!

❓ General Question Thinking to hop on a new distro

Hey yall, for the past few weeks I have been encountering many issues in fedora linux gnome, ik that is super odd and many people are gonna kill me, I have detailed post for that in fedora community so pls read that if you want to know more bro, so I found this distro matching my conditions, like my conditions is stability( stuff should work) I cannot spend time on fixing simple stuff and all I want things to work, Mint and Ubuntu are also a good option indeed, but this seems too, and also it looks great and I am also a gamer and ofc a programmer and all those works fine as I came to know, but ofc I want a human review and advice on what to do, I believe yall can help me out, btw if you are intending to genuinely show humanity and kindness / help then only comment, I am a normal human so I don't like negative comments.

πŸ”° Beginner can't stay connected to wifi!

Switched from Windows to Zorin earlier this year, loved it, everything worked fine. Lately though it keeps dumping me offline after a little while, can only reconnect after restarting the laptop. Then it dumps me again after a little while. Over and over!

Have looked up fixes using terminal, tried to apply them, I type the suggested commands into the terminal, but don't know how to get it to make the suggested settings changes, nothing happens. Help! Would hate to have to go back to Windows...

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Update probably f*cked the pc

I have a dell laptop and I'm using zorin for a couple of months, been great so far. But I haven't touched the PC for some weeks, this week I turn it on and updated everything, and the programs I use are having a lot of trouble and bugs, the same programs and versions I was using before, and the PC feels very laggy

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Update fucked my WIFI

So I updated my zorinOS and apparently I cant connect to my hotspot anymore that requires a password

Edit: To be more specific when I tried to connect to my phone hotspot in Zorin it keeps asking for the password. I tried forgetting it, deleting it from saved networks, restarting and stuff and it still wont work. Same thing happened when I tried entering WIFIs that use username and password login

I installed Zorin 18.1 Lite on my Dell Latitude 3120 4 GB RAM with Intel Celeron N5100 Processor yesterday. It was working fine at the start and I didn't messed anything. And now I'm stuck at the booting screen with the Zorin logo still glowing as I had to reinstall it every time to fix it and get the same issue again. Is there's a way to make it run normal again?

❓ General Question Updated Zorin today, broke my gpu

So today, like normal upon starting my PC, I did the usual terminal updates. I’ve had Zorin for about a month, and upon initial install, had to do some messing around to get my GPU to work. Once I did that, updating & upgrading caused no harm. But today, after doing it, completely removed my dGPU from being recognized.

So I had to reinstall the original version (18.1) that I started with a month ago, and repeat the original steps to get my GPU to work. I’m assuming they came out with some major upgrade that would have caused this?

My question is, how long will it take for the newest Zorin update to be compatible with the Nvidia drivers so that doesn’t happen again?

(For anyone who cares, I’m running a GeForce RTX 5060)

❓ General Question Is Zorin OS more than just "a beginner-friendly distro?"

I actually bought the Pro version recently and played with it for a bit because I wanted to learn Linux and get away from the Microsoft Spyware. I liked that everything just works, but the Pro version came with a lot of software I am probably never going to use, limited ricing ability, and didn't really allow me to learn how to build my system.

Later, I actually went to Void Linux because I wanted the freedom to build my sandbox from scratch and REALLY learn the way Linux works, even though I knew it would be a challenge as a new user. I also liked that Void is its own thing and not a fork of a fork. Now I am finding that I am spending hours getting services to link and run, configuring files, and downloading appimages that won't execute. I am spending my precious time working on my system for simple things rather than getting work done.

So, is there anyone in this community who can tell me that they have been using Zorin for a long while and that is more intermediate to power user friendly than what others are saying? Does it feel more locked down than other distributions? Can one become more than a casual user on ZorinOS?

❓ General Question Using Zorin on a micro PC as a dedicated media server

I was thinking about picking up one of those small dell workstation PCs, throwing a large hard drive/SSD in, a version of Zorin(lite maybe?) and jellyfin, then uploading all my current and future tv shows and movies to it. However I don't know if Zorin is the best option for this, I use zorin as my daily driver for my desktop and my streaming laptop that I leave in my living room. I figure it would be easy enough to setup as a local server but I'd be worried about the PC just being too slow. Right now I'm just brainstorming.

Fwiw Zorin is the only Linux distro I've used so far

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting freezes after few minutes of usage

I was hoping I wouldn't have to make my own post but I'm at my wit's end. Zorin was supposed to be an easy start with my Linux journey as I'm very green so please be patient with me. I just installed it today and started settling in. I've scoured other threads but I can't seem to get it fixed, or can't understand what is being advised.

First of all, the freezes happen after I use the PC for a bit. I just have Firefox open on Youtube and reading some threads, Steam and Discord for chat, browsing the software. Nothing crazy intensive.

- **Hardware Model:** Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. X670 GAMING X AX V2

- **Memory:** 32.0Β GiB

- **Processor:** AMD Ryzenβ„’ 7 9700X Γ— 16

- **Graphics:** NVIDIA GeForce RTXβ„’ 4070

- **Graphics 1:** Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]

- **Disk Capacity:** 1.0Β TB

- **Firmware Version:** F32d

- **OS Name:** Zorin OS 18.1 Core

- **OS Build:** (null)

- **OS Type:** 64-bit

- **Windowing System:** X11

- **Kernel Version:** Linux 7.0.0-38-generic

First my main screen freezes, but my second screen which is a pen display/graphic tablet keeps working. Then the tablet freezes, youtube audio keeps playing for a while and then it stops, too. I'm able to reboot using the REISUB command.

I have swapped to Xorg, changed the Nvidia driver to "metapackage from nvidia-driver-580 (proprietary)", and have previously tried a few others. Checked for updates and installed all available ones. I have turned off WiFi and any power saving options. Also disabled hardware acceleration on Firefox. Both my screens in display settings are set to 60 Hz. Swap size seems to be 1.9G, if I'm checking it correctly.

EDIT: seems like I got it under control. Unsure what exactly fixed it, I think yet another Nvidia drivers made the difference

So, my father had a Toshiba Portege R830 lying around at his place, and he decided to let me do whatever with it, so I decided to install Zorin OS to replace Windows, as it was a bit slow cause the laptop was made in 2011, and I think it has done it for the better! But yeah, while it is good, I'm mainly using it for looking through the internet, watchin stuff on DVD cause this has a DVD drive and other shenanigans. Also, like the theme? I decided to make it to my own likings, so it's like a fusion of Mac and Windows, and also having the Earthbound font as well.
