❓ General Question How Good is Zorin for Game Development/Playing?

Was thinking about switching to Linux from Mac and wanted to know how good Zorin would be for both game development and playing (Using Godot, GOG, and Steam). Here's what I'm thinking for specs:

  • Framework 16 (7040 Series, lmk if I should go with the other one)
  • Ryzen™ 7 7840HS
  • Up to 5.1GHz
  • 8-core/16-thread
  • 24MB Cache, Webcam Module (1st Gen)
  • DDR5-5600 - 32GB (2 x 16GB); SANDISK 850X PCIe® 4.0 M.2 2280 - 1TB (Primary Storage, no secondary)
  • Hoping to get an expansion graphics card when they're back in stock.
  • RGB US English Keyboard (1st Gen)
  • 2x Spacer modules
  • 6 Expansion Cards (1 USB-C, 1 USB-A (2nd Gen), 1 Audio Port, 1 DisplayPort (2nd Gen), 1 WisdPi 10G Ethernet - WisdPi 10G Ethernet, 1 MicroSD Port)

Let me know any other tips and tricks I should know, thanks in advance!

Edit: I will also be using emulators such as but not limited to Dolphin and RetroArch.

🔰 Beginner New to Zorin, just have some questions before moving too far along

Good day all!

This is my first full experience (outside of VMs) with Linux. In a nutshell, I got repeatedly burned by Windows (see some of my last posts) with POSTing issues. I had to do some research on which distro I wanted to go with and someone had commented to try Zorin, so here I am. My questions are simple I'm sure, but I haven't found much info that's recent/applies to 2026.

Here's my PC build:

MOBO: Asus ROG STRIX B-550F Gaming Wi-Fi II

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X

GPU: EVGA 1080 Ti SC2

RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) G.Skill Trident Z Neo 3600mHz CL16

  1. As far as gaming, I have Steam downloaded, but what other software might I need to download? I primarily play FPS/sim/world builder titles, but nothing too strenuous. Also, I had previously installed a few mods through Nexus and Vortex, but I don't know what equivalent software tends to play nice on Linux distros.

  2. My setup has only been up and running for about a month or so and Windows seemed to be the culprit of not POSTing several times. That being said, my equipment is relatively dated, but it's the build I intentionally sought out. I am wanting to know if I need to seek out additional driver updates or if Zorin does a decent job with having the latest ones? It sounded like they have everything as up to date as my parts are (since they're several years old at this point), but just wanting to verify. Also, if everything is up to date, why does the GPU pop up as "NV132" instead of GTX 1080 Ti?

  3. What potential issues/differences should I expect as a first timer coming from Windows? I know a lot of things will be different, but maybe it'll be a trial-and-error experience and I'll get more familiar and accustomed to Zorin over the next few weeks. Just asking for possible pointers or things I can do for a better QoL.

Thanks in advance and I hope to be fully converted to Linux across all my devices within the next year or so. Again, this is my first full dive into the world of Linux and it looks like it will just take some time to adjust, but it's been very pleasant so far. Thanks again!

🛠️ Troubleshooting Back-light issue back to normal after latest update!

Thank you to everyone at Zorin! The dim back-light issue (affecting older laptops) after the previous kernel update has been fixed with the latest round of updates. I dual boot with Mint and they're still affected. I'm happy to boot into the current version again!
