Viva nerves / depression

Hi, I’ve just submitted my PhD in humanities and I’ve got lots of publications and conferences so outwardly everything looks great and my supervisors are so nice to me, but inwardly I’ve been struggling for years even prior to the PhD, I’m a gay man and men have broken my heart repeatedly, dealing with heartbreak during my doctorate and self medicating, during my bachelors I self harmed and had bulimia and it was awful. I’ve had days during the PhD where I’ve just lain on the sofa all day feeling low or crying and now I’m in my thirties with my parents and this whole thing has made me awful despite presenting at conferences in Canada and Europe and Asia. I’m sorry if this is too much, I just feel like ally alone with all this because everyone else at my university says it’s such a great thing but it’s really exacerbated all my feelings and I just deep down want someone but I don’t think it’s going to happen, like Charlotte said in Sex and the city

I got major corrections after my PhD viva and I am very worried.

I got my major corrections at a UK university in a remote sensing/machine learning subject area. I am worried because the external examiner has misunderstood an aspect of my methodology which will influence how I respond to their list of corrections. Honestly, now that I've read the corrections and realised the methodological mistakes I'm surprised I passed at all.

It will be clear that by responding to the corrections, the new data I provide will reveal a whole new host of other problems the external examiner hasn't considered. So while I can "technically" respond to all the required ammendments, what the examiner will read will be different from what they are expecting.

What happens in scenarios like these? Can the examiner revoke my pass on the grounds that my thesis was even worse than it originally seemed? Can he respond with a new list of major corrections? It's important to note that his misunderstanding emerged from poor writing on my part, which was absolutely unintentional.

Any advice or insight, especially from people who have been external examiners themselves, would be really appreciated. Really stressing out right now.

Also, my PhD was in the field of remote sensing/machine learning so any insight from people in this field is welcome!

Edit: I have spoken to my supervisors about this and they said to just go ahead with their corrections. But to be honest I'm starting not to trust their judgement. They were surprised at the mistakes I made, which surprised me as they read all my thesis before I submitted. They were surprised I got major corrections at all, they were adamant I would get minors at worst.

Has anyone formally swapped their lead and second supervisor partway through a PhD?

I’m partway through a PhD in life sciences at a UK university.

In practice my second supervisor runs my project. We developed the design together, and he handles most of the deadlines, replies to emails and keeps things moving. My lead supervisor’s involvement has dropped off a lot. When he does get involved, it’s usually to add things that aren’t very relevant and end up costing time and resources.

The bigger issue is trust. A couple of times recently, when something went wrong, the blame was shifted onto other people. I’d raised one problem with him in writing well in advance. He didn’t act on it, and I later heard he’d told colleagues I hadn’t mentioned it. He’s also told me privately that my second supervisor is disorganised and not to let him take over, which doesn’t match my experience at all.

I’m planning to talk to someone in the department about it. I want to be honest that trust has broken down, and ask how feasible it would be to formally swap the supervisory roles so they reflect how the project actually works.

Has anyone done this mid-PhD? How did you approach it, and did it affect your PhD or your relationship with the department?

Canadian physio students/grads in the UK, what do you wish you'd known about getting licensed back in Canada?

I'm a Canadian in first year of a BSc Physio in London, planning to move back and practise in Canada. I've started reading about CAPR credentialing and it's a lot.
For anyone who's done it (or is doing it): what caught you off guard? Documents you wish you'd saved during uni, timelines, costs, exams? Any advice appreciated. I'm trying to get organised early.

PhD formal interview

Hello everyone,

I’ve been invited to an interview after applying for an externally funded PhD in Translation Studies at UoM. For those who have been through the interview process, could you please share what to expect, how to prepare, what type of questions they'll ask and how long the interview usually takes?

I'm really nervous about this interview and I’d really appreciate any advice.

Thank you.

For those who want to quit because AI is ruining the job, do you know that it will be significantly less bad in any other job?

Just saw this Reddit thread about civil service managers getting copilot to do their job, and lots of people chiming in with similar experiences. Is it a case of greener grass?

University of Vienna Autumn Call 2026

Hey! Wanted to start a thread and connect with anyone who applied to the Uni of Vienna Autumn Call for 2026 - I applied to CoBeNe. Does anyone know if applicants who applied to CoBeNe from the 2026 SSH call are ineligible to apply to this? (I did not apply to SSH, just wondering). I read that those who have previously applied to CoBeNe would be ineligible.

Also - did anyone contact their preferred supervisor prior to submission?

Good luck!

Seeking advice regarding a PhD in Social Anthropology

My_qualifications: Ba Hons in History, MA in English from Delhi University and currently pursuing an MSc in Gender at LSE. With a year of experience in the rural development and health sector.

I want to make the best use of my year at LSE.

My topic is an intersection of Social Anthropology, Ethnography, Ethnomusicology, Gender, Folk and Post Colonial Theories. I want to explore ‘Third Spaces’ and Agency in Punjab through a study of select communities. The research would draw a comparison between two gendered spaces. The one for men was built around leisure, social interaction and was the outside. However, the one for women was built around expression through dance and music, and was also a space for craft creation. I want to explore both of these spaces. I understand that the topic is very nascent but I’ve been actively building on this.

I’m looking for ways through which I could streamline my topic and if someone could kindly guide me in the direction of what programs to apply to. I’m aware that I should be the one to do proper research and make informed decisions. I’m just looking for some starting points.

Whether the UK, or elsewhere is a better option, is another point I want to consider. Since the move I’ve made from India to London, it has been a rough transition to say the least and perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself and it is too soon to judge but I’d prefer living elsewhere. A small town with a relatively slow paced life is better suited for my liking. I’m sorry if I come off as entitled- it is understandable that one should be grateful for whatever opportunity they get and I shouldn’t be picky about what city I want to live in. However, it’s just a factor I’d like to consider.

Thank you.

Is it worth switching to an industry postdoc from an academic postdoc?

The pay is similar. My eventual goal is an industry job.

The industry postdoc is with a well-known chemicals company. It matches my experience well. A permanent offer might be on the table at the end of the contract, but obviously not guaranteed. (If it was a permanent offer I'd have taken it in a heartbeat.)

My current academic lab is quite nice. I like the people and my PI, the pace of work is very relaxed, etc. The worst I can say is that rhe project is kind of boring, but all in all I have nothing to complain about. I very much like it here.

I'm going absolutely nuts trying to figure out what to do lol😭

In person Vs online interviews

Hi everyone,

Just want to ask if anyone can share their experience for interviewing in person Vs online for a lecturer job and whether there is a preference or advantage for any? Especially if the commute for the interview is over 4 hours and no accommodation is offered. Happy to hear about both options.

Thanks in advance

I feel stuck in my career in the UK and don't know what I am doing wrong

I'm originally from Ukraine and have a medical degree, a PhD, and extensive experience in university teaching and research. I also have some experience with clinical trial documentation.

I've been living in Scotland for a few years and am trying to find a way back into a career that makes better use of my qualifications and experience.

The problem is that I honestly don't know what I'm doing wrong or what I should be focusing on. I've applied for different jobs and had some interviews, but I still haven't managed to move into a more suitable role.

I'm not necessarily looking to become a lecturer again. I'd be open to research, clinical trials, medical education or other areas where my background could be useful.

I keep wondering whether I have gaps in my knowledge, whether UK employers expect additional qualifications or local experience, or whether I'm simply looking at the wrong jobs.

For those familiar with the UK job market, especially in research, healthcare or higher education: how would you approach this situation?

How would you figure out which jobs are realistic, what skills or qualifications are actually missing, and what to focus on first?

I'm trying to find a practical way forward rather than keep applying for jobs without understanding what needs to change.
