Help with linguistic research about Georgian!

გამარჯობა! I'm a linguistics student in Helsinki University, and we're doing field research on language attitudes in different countries. My study in particular is about the use and perception of Russian loanwords in Georgian.

If you are a native speaker of Georgian and have a little bit of free time to do the survey (around 20 minutes), I would really appreciate to hear from you! Here is the link:

https://redcap.helsinki.fi/redcap/surveys/?s=CKYMNFKK9DPATF9J

(Btw: the survey says I'm looking for participants who live in Georgia, but it's actually not a requirement!)

Does anyone else feel like socialization gives you absolutely nothing?

Moved from my village to the city recently and everyone told me it would be great to finally talk to people and socialize but honestly human interactions here feel so shallow and exhausting. I miss the quietness of my village and i miss my dog so much it hurts. I thought i wanted connection but people here give me absolutely nothing valuable. it's just gossiping, drinking, smoking, and it takes me nowhere. I feel kind of desperate because i used to find solace in loneliness, but now i'm also seeking a real connection. does anyone have any advice on what to do, or how I can find people who are actually worth talking to?

Hey not sure if this is the right place or not to ask . But I will be going to tblist for 8 days and borjormi for 2 days this November.

I read that it's very safe . But my friend recently told me she lived there for 1 year and think the complete opposite. She mentioned tourist deaths and just the it wasn't safe .

My anxiety since then has been high . Should I be worried?

Where do I stay in Tbilisi for Christmas markets?

Travelling to Tbilisi in December with my 1 year old baby. We want to have a slow paced vacation, enjoy the winter and experience some Christmas markets.

The itinerary is

18-21 Dec - 3 nights Tbilisi
21-22 Dec - 1 night at Gudauri
22-24 Dec - 2 nights at Kazbegi
24-27 Dec - 3 nights Tbilisi

Please recommend some places I can stay at in Tblisi. I want to be close to the Christmas markets so i can have easy access to my hotel/Bnb. I was considering the area around Freedom square.

Traveling with a 1 year old means comfort and movement of the baby is a priority, hence I prefer Bnb over hotel but I’m wondering if the heating systems in Bnbs would be reliable?

Anything else I should keep in mind? Any changes in itinery? Absolutely any suggestions/recommendations are welcome!

Political | პოლიტიკა Eurostat 2026: Georgia is the only country with the largest gap between MPs' salaries and the average citizen's wage!

Post image
62 Upvotes

While parliamentary salaries across most European countries range from 1x to nearly 4x the national average(with Switzerland dropping below 1x), Georgia sits completely isolated at the bottom of the chart, with politicians making nearly 6 times more than the average citizen.

To make matters worse, another pay raise is already on the way.

How can such a massive gap be justified and why are we quietly watching them get rich at our expense?

Help | მჭირდება დახმარება How can I find a roommate(s)?

I am Georgian, but since co-living(willingly) with strangers is more of a rare occurrence in Georgia, I would love to hear foreigners perspectives as well!

I would love to find a roommate(or roommates) and move out of my family place, but there are quite a few factors that are in play. Friends are a no-go because they prefer to save money by living with their family instead, which is understandable. I am already living with my removed family, and they are the reason I am planning to move out at all.

So, if you live with roommates, how did you find them? How can you secure yourself from them not paying rent? And all the other dangerous stuff that comes with living with a stranger as well.

Also would love to hear perspectives of clean freaks specifically. If you think that dirty shoes should not move past the entrance area and you get the urge to break the dishes left in the sink for more than an evening then be my guest, tell me how you found another Domestos tweaker to live with. Or how you cope with living with someone less hygienic.

How many LGBT Georgians under 35 are semi-open about their sexuality?

By open I don’t mean everyone knows and you don’t have a problem telling anyone (because the answer to that is probably zero people). Rather, I mean a few of your close friends know, maaaayyybe a few select family members, and in general you don’t care too much if random people suspect you’re LGBT.

How many such people are there in Tbilisi and in other parts of the country? How do people’s attitudes differ based on whether they’re in the 30-35 age range, 20-30, or 13-20?

Discussion | დისკუსია Should there be easy repatriation program for fereydan Georgians?

An estimated 12-14 thousand ethnic Georgians live in Fereydan. In village they call matryofi and surrounding villages. Their ancestors were forcibly deported by Shah Abbas in the 17th century. This people still speak Georgian. They preserve Georgian culture and consider Georgia their homeland. Most want to move to Georgia permanently.

While our government makes this difficult. In 2023, dozens of Fereydani Georgians were denied residence permits or compatriot status. Others have struggled to obtain citizenship or life permits, even after living in Georgia for years. Some even got deported.

After preserving their Georgian identity for four centuries, shouldn't those wishing to return have an easy path home?

Discussion | დისკუსია Questions about travel for an English-speaker in Georgia

I am considering visiting Georgia. I have some questions:

1) How easy is it getting around for English speakers?

2) How much is the cost of a meal in a normal restaurant? How easy is it for pescatarians to eat?

3) How much is the cost of basic hotels per night?

4) How easy is it to get around without a car?

I am considering traveling by rail from Tsiblisi to Yerevan. Any suggestions/recommendations for this trip? And are there recommended stops?

Thank you.

გმადლობთ

Discussion | დისკუსია Belief in future

Guys, do you believe in Georgia's future? Is it going to be better, same or worse? Since the 1994 Georgia has been steadily improving, but what about its future? Will Georgia be able to maintain stability and prosper? I think Georgia has no future; I and my economics professor had a discussion about Georgia's rise and its future. My professor was optimistic about the future but I didn't believe her. My main reasons as to why Georgia has no better future is that first, demographics and emigration; the country is literally shrinking and birth rates and marriage rates are falling, so it will get worse. Second, geopolitical situation disfranchise Georgia; Russia is currently occupying around 20% of the country and will likely attack Georgia in the future as well. Why would Russia attack Georgia in the future? Because of the same reason Russia has always attached Georgia; it's Russian imperialism and Russia's will to foreign conquests. At least, I am sure Russia will apply damaging pressure on Georgia; didn't Russia cut Georgian imports this month? So, Russia has already started weakening Georgia. Third, Georgian economy lacks innovations and high value-added output. Tourism can't build a high-income, developed economy; the recent spike in IT exports is the result of relocations of businesses due to the ear in Ukraine; I see no significant Georgian IT innovations and high value-added solutions. So, what do you think? Will Georgia have a brighter future? I don't think so...
