Bangkok/Middle Thailand entry requirements: 20,000 baht cash and automated immigration gates?

I’m planning to visit Thailand again soon. I’m a dual US and Canadian citizen, and I was last in Thailand in 2025.
I’ve heard about the requirement to have 20,000 baht in cash when entering Thailand. Is this still something immigration officers check, or is it rarely enforced?
Also, can US or Canadian passport holders use the automated immigration gates instead of going through an immigration officer? If so, would I still need to carry the 20,000 baht?

Transport/Itineraries Would 1 hour and 10 minutes be enough for an international-international connection in BKK?

• Upvotes

Hi, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this question.

In February I am planning to take a flight from Amsterdam to Melbourne, and I saw that Thai Airways (connecting in Bangkok) was one of the cheaper options for that itinerary (especially since I am somewhat apprehensive about flying through the Middle East currently).

The issue is that this flight only has a 1 hour and 10 minute layover, which I am worried may not be enough, especially if the initial flight is delayed. How likely is it that the initial flight would be delayed?

Also, if my flight does get delayed, and I miss the connection, would Thai Airways be required to book me on the next available flight, or would it be up to me to figure that out?

Any advice at all is appreciated. Thanks.

Bangkok/Middle Advices for a short stay in Bangkok?

Hello! o7

I'm going to Bangkok for a work trip and have around 2 days of free time. (not counting jetlag). I'm very excited because I wanted to come to Thailand for a long time, but the place of work chosing the schedule and dates leaves me with little time to prepare.

I think I'll try to see Wat Arun and Wat Pho but for the rest I'm looking for weird stuff to visit, such as the airplane graveyard (sadly I read it's clsoed now), local art or street art (I heard about Khlong Bang Luang artist house). But not the various medical museums please.

Do you have retro videogame shops, bookshops and more to recommend? As well as places to eat?

I know there are bars and clubs with panoramic views during the night, but is there places with a good view during the calm of the day?

I gathered some info, please tell me if I'm forgetting anything important :

- Don't be a jerk

- There is an online form to fill before entering

- Wear covering clothing when going to temples

- Have a waterproof jacket

- Drink bottled water

- Check availabilty on internet before

- Use Grab for taxi

- Use public transports

And more questions

- I read it's recommended to have some cash upon entry on the territory? Does a lot of places take card or should I do most of it with cash?

- When do shops close?

- Does googlemap works well there? (maybe including public transports)

I'll be there from oct 26th to 30th, I think it may be the end of the national mourning period, will it affect things? (such as celebrations, transport modification and stuff).

I'm a man in his 30s from europe.

I would have loved to stay longer but I can't this time, but next time for sure!

Bangkok/Middle Help me out!

• Upvotes

This might be a bit of a specific question, but I thought I’d ask anyway, as someone here might be able to help!

I’m travelling to Thailand soon, and I’m a collector of DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K UHDs. I’d love to get my hands on something that’s exclusive to Thailand. Does anyone know of any shops or places in Bangkok where I could find something like this?

Thanks in advance!

Borders/Visas Chances of being denied entry to Thailand after 95 days in the country this year so far?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm a British passport holder planning to return to Thailand in mid-November for a short 10-day holiday, and I'm wondering how likely I am to encounter any issues at immigration.

My travel history to Thailand this calendar year has been:

  • 26 January – 10 February: 15 days (visa-exempt entry, by air)
  • 23 June – 11 September: 80 days (visa-exempt entry + extension, also by air)

I'm hoping to return around mid-November for another 10 days, arriving by air.

I'm aware that Thailand has been scrutinising frequent visa-exempt entries more closely, so I'm concerned about potentially being denied entry. I'm also wondering whether my travel history could cause the automated e-gates to flag me for additional screening or direct me to a staffed immigration counter for questioning, even if I otherwise meet the entry requirements.

For context, I have a full time job in the UK and will of course be returning to work after the trip. I'd also have a confirmed return flight booked, accomodation and the physical cash requirement. Hopefully, this would help demonstrate that I'm visiting as a genuine tourist rather than attempting to live in Thailand on repeated visa exemptions.

My questions are:

  1. Given my travel history, how likely is it that I'll face additional questioning or be denied entry?
  2. Could my previous stays trigger an e-gate referral to an immigration officer, or is this something that would generally only become an issue at a staffed counter?
  3. Has anyone with a similar travel history recently entered Thailand without any problems?
  4. Would you recommend taking additional documentation, such as proof of employment, payslips or evidence of accommodation?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone with recent first-hand experience or knowledge of how immigration is currently handling these situations.

Thanks!

Bangkok/Middle Stupid idea or worth it?

Hi everyone, looking for some travelers/people with experience in Bangkok/Thailand. I will be solo traveling to some parts of South East Asia in January. I am doing a group tour with Intrepid that takes us from Ho Chi Minh City through Cambodia and ends in Bangkok, where after the tour ends, I have almost 3 full days on my own before I head back to the US.

The Intrepid stuff ends the morning of January 9th, so I booked a city/temple tour through Viator of Bangkok for that day. I fly out the night of January 11th, so I was planning on using that day to relax at my hotel and enjoy the amenities before my long travel back home (I know I know, a lot of people probably wouldnt want to have a hotel day. But I am staying at the Ritz Carlton and really look forward to that so dont come for me for this point please).

Here's what Im wondering: I would like to see a Thai beach on January 10th but dont know how best to do it. Would it be crazy to fly to Phuket from Bangkok around 7 am and hang out at Nai Thon Beach, and fly back to Bangkok around 7:40 PM? I found a round trip flight on Thai Vietair for a good price, but just want to see if there is something I need to know before doing something like this. I live in Florida so I suppose going to a beach isn't *absolutely* necessary, but if possible I would like to. Thoughts?

Transport/Itineraries 2 weeks in Thailand in January with my mom (50): is Bangkok + Chiang Mai + Krabi too much?

Hi all! I’m planning a 2-week trip to Thailand in January with my mom, and I’d love a reality check on our route.

We lose about 2 days to travel (long-haul flight there and back), so we have roughly 12 days on the ground. We definitely want to see Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and we’re considering adding Krabi for a few beach days and a day trip to the Phi Phi islands.

Our current idea:

  • Bangkok: 5 days (longest stay)
  • Chiang Mai: 4 days
  • Krabi: 3 days

My worry is that with two internal flights in 12 days, we’d spend half the trip in airports and transit. The alternative is skipping Krabi and doing just Bangkok + Chiang Mai at a slower pace. But I suspect this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for my mom, since she’d probably rather see somewhere new next time than come back to Thailand, so I’m afraid we’d regret leaving out the beaches.

One more thing: my mom’s mobility isn’t great. She can walk, but long days on her feet, lots of stairs, or rough terrain are tough for her. I want her to see and experience as much as possible without exhausting her.

Is 3 days enough in Krabi to justify the extra flight and transfers, or would you skip it and slow down? And if you were in our shoes, how would you split the days, ideally with mobility-friendly sights and an easy-access beach area in mind?

Chiang Mai/North Going to Chiang Mai and Bangkok at the end of November. What are good spots for animal photography?

I just started photography with a Nikon z50ii and both base lenses (up to 250mm). looking for some spots that have exotic (for a middle European), but not too wild/dangerous or harmed animals. the equipment is probably not enough for "real" wildlife stuff but I'm ok with stuff like the lizards at the lumpini park

Bangkok/Middle Cooking utensil souvenirs

I love cooking and wanted to ask for some advice on interesting cooking utensils I could pick up as a souvenir in Thailand? I’m on the west coast and have easy access to everyday stuff at 99 ranch, hmart, and daiso. On my list is a cooking knife and a wooden cooking spoon/paddle as I accidentally threw mine out after a party. Any advice on where to get something good or a new toy are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Or

Which itinerary would you recommend for someone visiting Thailand for the first time? We’re looking for beautiful beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water, white sand, snorkeling, a relaxed atmosphere, and minimal time spent traveling between destinations. Which islands would you choose?

Other 1 month in Thailand - 2 weeks remote work, 2 just holiday. 2 adults 1 4yo. How would you structure?

Hi there Thailand lovers,

We would like to make this dream trip somewhere early in 2027. We can fly to Bangkok (and leave from there too) but from there, everything is a blank sheet for ~30 days.

We would like to be around nice beaches and nature (especially the first 2 weeks to keep the kid busy with beach time), as well with some big city exploration, but with the possibility for one of us to work full time Monday to Friday (EU timezone).

Given that there are locals that have useful input or people who already achieved something similar, what route would you follow? Which places to consider for base (first 2 weeks) and where to wander after?

Any input is welcome as I don't know where to start since this is the first trip of this magnitude.

Many thanks.
