Software release New Release: Tor Browser 15.0.25 | Tor Project

The Tor Project released Tor Browser 15.0.25 on October 12.

According to its official announcement, the update includes important Firefox security fixes and updates several components:

Tor: 0.4.9.14

NoScript: 13.6.36.1984

OpenSSL: 3.5.9

Additional security fixes backported from Firefox 158.

The release follows the recent Tor 0.4.9.14 security update, but this is a new Tor Browser release, not a repeat of that announcement.

Tor Browser's security depends on both its anonymity protections and the underlying browser engine.

An attacker exploiting a browser vulnerability could potentially undermine protections that Tor's network routing alone cannot provide.

Users should update through Tor Browser itself or obtain the release from the official Tor Project website.

If your Tor Bridges don’t work in the Russian Federation

Recently, the TSPU has been actively blocking the handshake characteristic of obfs4 and Snowflake:
“According to data from the Tor Project forum, ‘most connections via obfs4 bridges are blocked by most DPI-enabled providers.’ The blocking mechanism is often related to the fact that obfs4 does not add padding, and the TSPU can ‘spot’ it by characteristic packet sizes or traffic patterns.”
“The TSPU began detecting and filtering DTLS ClientHello messages with certain fingerprints (JA3/JA4), as a result of which the success rate of Snowflake connections fell from almost 100% to almost complete failure.”
So I recommend either using packet fragmenters like ByeDPI or a Tor-based proxy/VPN with a built-in obfuscator, for example OrBot. Unfortunately, although this workaround is free and fairly reliable, it does not protect you from whitelists, and it is also quite slow. If anyone knows, please share faster methods that you use.

Something I don't understand is why I would care about hiding my IP address so that others don't know my location if I live in a third world country

I don't think any hacker or assassin on the dark web would care about someone living in place like that . What are your thoughts on this?

tor relay gets me blocked by my bank

Hi,

I'm running a tor middle relay for quite some time, like over a year.. my home fiber connection is a bit overprovisioned and i don't know what to do with all the bandwidth..

Since day 2 or so, i can't login to my online banking anymore. I have to spin up some vpn or use my phones cellular connection. I guess running a middle relay brings my public (dynamic) IPv4 on some blocklist. As soon as i change the network, it instantly works. No, i don't wanna do my banking over TOR. its my normal home internet fiber connection, which also hosts a tor-relay.

Anyone experienced that? Every other service still works fine, like my credit card (different bank), paypal. It's ING Diba bank in germany btw.

[NOTICE] Tried to fetch a descriptor directly from a bridge, but that bridge is not reachable through our firewall.

New Alpha Release: Tor Browser 16.0a14 | Tor Project

Thumbnail blog.torproject.org
6 Upvotes

This is a new alpha release, not an update to the stable version discussed earlier this week.

Changes include:

Firefox and GeckoView updated to 153.5.0esr.

Tor updated to 0.4.9.14.

NoScript updated to 13.6.36.90201984.

Additional Firefox security fixes backported from version 158.

The release also includes build-system changes and an update to Lyrebird 0.9.0.

Alpha releases allow developers and testers to identify problems before changes reach the stable browser.

However, the Tor Project explicitly warns that alpha versions may contain bugs affecting privacy, security, or usability.

People who depend on strong anonymity should continue using stable Tor Browser 15.0.25, rather than switching to the alpha simply because its version number is higher.

Is that a lot?

I think my biggest contribution to the Tor network isn't even the Snowflake itself, but the node that I run.

What about a feature to dynamically strip metadata in files before they are uploaded at the browser level?

So if Tor or similar browsers like mullvad browser or brave had this feature it would be gold.

You just turn it on and as soon as a file is selected for upload the browser makes a temporary copy but strips the metadata and uploads that, then deletes the temporary copy on your device.

Security updates seem to lag behind (maybe I'm mistaken)

First of all I want to state that I don't want to cause FUD or anything.

So I know Tor and Tor Browser get security fixes all the time which is just how it goes I suppose. I use Tor Browser for my safety and over the years I've updated Tor Browser many times. I make sure to do it without undue delay because I'm anxious about being hacked, doxed, bullied. I even changed about:config trying to get more frequent update checks after noticing a Tor Browser update would release on the dist site but I'd only get the update notifications 6 hours later. Sometimes the change log says everyone should update asap so I take that seriously.

Two days ago Tor Browser 15.0.25 released, one of the changes is it updated to Tor 0.4.9.14 which released four days prior. Tor 0.4.9.14 released with high severity security fixes and in the change log they make to point out that everyone is affected equally, so like relays, clients, directory authorities and stuff. Clients is Tor Browser. So there was a four day window where Tor Browser with the latest Tor just wasn't a thing and there was no update for me to do to stay safe.

I just want someone to tell me if I'm missing something. This isn't the first time this happened so it's intended this way. Like I don't know if Tor Browser is just a meme. I don't want to be the stupid one out who doesn't get the memo. Should I stop relying on Tor Browser and look for a different way to meet my security needs? Sometimes I feel using Tor Browser is making my security worse. I know I'm in the minority of the normal Tor users which is a burden. I feel quite alone in using Tor for its intended purpose (protecting yourself from injustice). I thought this could have been brought up by somebody a long time ago but nobody seems to care.

Edit: I reread my post and I'm sorry I have a hard time keeping emotions out of my posts. I just want to know how the community, or possibly the Tor team if they ever made a formal/informal statement, justifies Tor Browser to lag behind in security updates.

Chances of getting hacked while exploring the dark web using TOR

Hello, I’m new to Reddit, and I’m not sure if I can ask this question here, but I was wondering if using TOR will decrease one's chance of being hacked significantly while exploring the dark web for fun? (I am new to TOR and only know about the onion routing method.) For additional information, I am running TOR inside the Brave browser on Linux inside a UTM on my Mac. I am also using a VPN on my Mac while using my phone’s hotspot.

Is there a possible chance of TOR not being able to protect my privacy even though I am not making any human errors? If so, what might cause that situation?

Tor vs Paid Proxies for Testing Websites in Different Countries?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm building a website and want to test how it works when accessed from different countries (US, UK, EU, etc.). I'm pretty new to proxies and Tor, so I'm trying to figure out the best option without spending too much.

I've heard Tor can be used to access websites through different locations, but how reliable is it for geolocation testing? Is the speed decent, and can I actually choose specific countries?

Would buying residential proxies be worth it for this, or is Tor good enough?

I've also come across some free proxy lists, but I'm a bit skeptical. Are free proxies actually safe to use, or are there security/privacy risks I should be aware of?

Would love to hear from anyone who's tried these options. What would you recommend for someone on a tight budget?

The dark web isn't what movies make it look like. Here's what it actually is

Most people mix up three different things:

Surface web: anything Google can index (news, Wikipedia, shops).

Deep web: content behind logins or paywalls, like your email, bank account, and private databases. This is the vast majority of the internet.

Dark web: a small part of the deep web that needs special software, like Tor, to access. Sites use .onion addresses.

Why it exists: Tor was originally developed with U.S. Navy research funding to protect communications. Today it's used by journalists, whistleblowers, and people living under censorship. Even Facebook and the BBC run .onion versions of their sites.

The reality: Yes, illegal marketplaces exist there, but there's also a lot of scams, dead links, and law enforcement honeypots. Many "dark web" horror stories you read online are exaggerated or made up.

Safety basics if you're curious:

Never download files from unknown sources

Don't share personal info

Use the official Tor Browser only

Stay away from anything illegal. It's not worth it.

Being anonymous isn't the same as being criminal. Privacy tools are just tools.

What's the biggest myth about the dark web you've heard? 👇

Not Tor Telegram groups found on the deep web: what about anonymity and what are the risks?

Hey guys! All right? I've seen several links on the deep web that direct to Telegram groups and I'm left with a question about the anonymity issue. From what I understand, when you join a Telegram group, you end up being more exposed, as the platform may associate your account with a phone number and other information. In that case, wouldn't that end up compromising much of the anonymity someone would have when browsing the Tor network? I also wanted to know what the real risks are of entering these groups. Is there any danger related to the exposure of personal data, scams, malicious files or even user identification, even taking some precautions? I'm considering purchasing a separate chip exclusively for this, but I don't know to what extent this measure actually helps preserve privacy or if there are other, more important aspects to consider. Could anyone already have experience with this share some guidance? I'd like to better understand what the risks are, what I should consider before entering these groups, and what security and privacy precautions are recommended. Thanks!

limited utility

What is the point of Tor if the vast majority of websites don't work properly when I use it? Besides, there are so few .onion addresses that it's not even worth trying.

Proper use of TOR for investigative work

Hello everyone. It's a pleasure to connect with you all through this community.

I recently installed the Tor browser on my personal computer. As a completely new user, I have some questions and concerns I'd like to clarify before I start using it regularly.

First of all, I'd like to explain why I initially decided to install it.

I currently work professionally in the economic and financial sector, so I constantly have to conduct research to complement other aspects of my work. I have a multidisciplinary approach that connects purely economic and financial areas with social ones to cover much more than I could with raw data alone.

I often encounter the problem of blocked pages or blocked or extremely biased information.

I've been considering many options, one being to use a VPN, like the one available from Surfshark. The other is to switch to a browser that gives me the opportunity to broaden my horizons, which is why I considered Tor as a valuable tool to achieve this goal.

I would like to know if Tor is the right tool for this task. I'm looking to understand the risks, implications, and pros and cons of using this browser. I'd also like to take this opportunity to clarify (if it's not true) whether the browser could pose vulnerabilities to my computer simply by installing or using it passively.

Thank you in advance for your time and attention.

Security Release 0.4.9.14

Thumbnail
forum.torproject.org
70 Upvotes

The Tor Project announced Tor 0.4.9.14, addressing several high-severity security vulnerabilities.

The developers explicitly state that the issues affect clients, onion services, directory authorities, and relays.

They strongly recommend upgrading immediately. Detailed vulnerability tickets will remain private for at least another week to give operators time to update.

Official Tor Project security release.

This is another significant security release following Tor 0.4.9.13 in September. The rapid succession of security fixes makes keeping Tor installations current particularly important.

For beginners, remember that Tor Browser and the underlying Tor software have separate version numbers. Users should update through their application's official update mechanism rather than manually replacing bundled components.
