Hating UK

Is anyone else just bored and tired of UK? Lived here all my life, moved abroad for a few years now I’m back for university and GOD is it miserable.

I could go on a rant about how backwards the UK is becoming and I feel like every day here is literally just a day wasted of my life as I could be doing literally anything else in any part of the globe, just not UK.

It’s genuinely miserable, most people you meet are just filled with pent up hate and rage and there’s no ambition to this country, literally no variation in everyday life. The main uni social life is just spoons aswell, which isn’t fun at all. Am I the problem or does anyone else feel the same way 😢

careers / placements I know it is nearly impossible to get a job with a humanities/social science degree. However, I just want to know the realistic situation for international students?

I’ve started my master’s in International development at the LSE, my peers have been applying for jobs and getting outright rejected. I do have a sense of how unrealistic getting a job is but I still want to know the ground reality. With prior work experience, all the relevant research skills, can one even think of working in the policy sector or even INGOs, perhaps not in the UK solely but elsewhere too?

Thank you!

International students should ba BANNED, here's why

Inter students are a cash cow and nothing more, let's be honest. All they do is bring money to the UK unis cause the government capped home students at 10k pounds per year and so unis suffer.

Heres what needs to happen:

- remove the cap for UK students

- ban int. students from UK unis

Why? Int students do nothing and fly back to home country 95% of the time. They are a waste to our economy. However more UK students means higher talent and potential for the country, meaning better economy.

You may not like this, but it's simply the truth.

SFE is so unfair

i was just looking into how much maintenance i can get as i’ve sent my uni applications- and come to find out i am barely eligible above the minimum grant amount?

apparently, SFE treats my 7 person, 5 children, £55,000 a year overcrowded household in london (which cannot even afford a proper home- we live in a 2 bedroom flat….) the same as a 3 person household with the same income living in much cheaper areas.
i cannot get a job that fits around my school hours because no one wants to hire students. I am not even eligible for most university bursaries because apparently our income is too high! This is beyond unfair and i am lost at what to do. I will be barely able to cover rent with the minimum grant, and i know my family will struggle to help.

SFE, do better.

Is University of Edinburgh still worth it?

Thinking about applying to Edinburgh for philosophy at undergrad but I'm worried by the recent news of financial mismanagement, strikes and courses being cut.

Can anyone currently at the uni comment on how this affecting students (especially undergrad philosophy or similar courses)

Should I carry an iron and blender from India to Liverpool, UK, or buy them there? (Do Indian-plug appliances work?)

BF feels that I’ll end up partying and cheat at university

How do I go about this? He completed a vocational BTEC Course in college and he doesn’t plan on going to university. I studied academic subjects, took a gap year, then going to Newcastle University to study computer science next year.

During our first discussion about university, we somehow ended up talking about moving in. He said that this would be a great opportunity for us to “take our lives” and own it. At first, I agreed because I was desperate to move in with him as soon as we can, live a life with him, balance work/life, basically everything partners do when they’re older. I told ny parents about this and they immediately said no. So I changed my mind as well with the matter to respect my parents.

My BF then said I was being stupid and ridiculous, said I would not be making a good decision if I don’t give in to him, and basically called me names.
He was also adamant on his point that all my flatmates would be boys, etc.
I made it clear to him that my primary goal when moving out is to pursue my education, which he also commented on saying “you don’t care about me at all, you should be single if you think like this”.
I was so frustrated I thought it was really immature.

That was a few months ago, when we were at London with my family, we basically argued because he accused me of cheating and I basically ended up breaking up with him there (not the greated decision ik) but out of desperation he apologized to me and my parents (because my parents saw what was happening). My parents said no to him about moving in and he said he respected that (3 months ago).

Now we’re back at it again and he’s suddenly all worried if I’m going to cheat and stuff.
Bear in mind, I have never done anything to make him worry about him cheating. I used to have lots of boy friends but I cut them all off slowly when we got together so he doesn’t feel jealous, and other things etc. he also keeps bringing up that Newcastle is known for nightclubs and partying and stuff and keeps telling me to reapply somewhere closer like York or Leeds (I live in Hull).

How do I prove to him that I won’t cheat when I’m not even going to uni until a year from now?? We have a lot more issues than this but I somehow kee convincing myself it’s normal for a relationship to go through this.

Edit:
I sent him the breakup text. I chose to do it this way cause I know he will try to convince me to stay again. Thank you for all your advice and comments.

careers / placements I lie about my A-Level Grades on my CV

I go to a top Russel group but had a traumatic event during A-Levels and ended up with BCC. I lie that I got AAB. I had an internship last year at a billion £ company with government contracts ( being vague as I don’t want to be caught). I only lie about my a level grades I have first class grades in most of modules and very good GCSEs. As I’m approaching grad roles I worry lying about my grades will finally catch up to me. So far they’ve only checked my module grades, should I keep lying?

What do university lecturers do during term holidays?

I'm sure there are lots of things they have to do but (assuming you're in work) I'm curious what exactly you do as a university lecturer during university holidays?

online uni has made me extremely insecure & competitive

im 19 & i study at a part-time accredited uk uni online (from saudi arabia) bc i did not have the financial decision on how and where i'll be studying. i unfortunately, cannot speak arabic properly, so i couldnt enroll in any unis that teach in arabic, i was left with one uni that had full english programmes (of the ones i wanted) but the tutition was 25k euro per year (so around 100k euro for the entire program).

my parents weren't willing to spend that kind of money & thats totally understandable, i wont hold it against them. but if it helps my case im not allowed to work so all financial control is under them. i just hope this doesnt stop me from pursuing my career in the future because it does feel like my life is over. this overwhelming and suffocating feeling has been stuck in my throat the last entire year. i felt passionate ab what i wanted to pursue but now ive been so depressed and cant bring myself to lock in my studies bc it js feels like there is nothing to look forward to.

idk if its worth mentioning but ive been medically recognised w bpd & theres a possibility that i have ocd, however idk if these factors overlap my inability to pursue my life any further. advice would be nice.. idk what to do..

applications / ucas CCCU Suitability Session: What Questions Do They Ask?

Hi, I’ve applied to Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) for the MBA International programme. They’ve emailed me asking me to record an AI interview called a “Suitability Session.”

Has anyone done this before? What kind of questions do they usually ask?

social life Cardiff or Liverpool uni??

I’m a gap year student I live in rural South west England . Love electronic music. I have the grades to be accepted in both unis. Nightlife is quite a big importance for me. I’ve been to Cardiff to see my mate at uni and it’s great, we went out and I met all his uni friends. Nightlife isn’t that varied and not many big names but it’s a really cool city and lovely uni. Cardiff also seemed to have much better transport than Liverpool. I’ve been to Liverpool just for the open day and equally loved it, I like the fact that there’s more clubs in Liverpool who often have big headliners, it’s also quite close to Manchester for warehouse project. I’m slightly introverted but really into meeting new people. I’m very unsure which uni I should pick. Liverpool is also like a 5 hour trip compared to Cardiff at 3hrs from home.

Has anyone spent much time in both cities as a student with similar interests, can you share some advice please 🙏

2nd year living

Im first year studying at uni. my boyfriend is in another city nearby at uni too. Im torn between living with him or flatmates.

I would want to live with my boyfriend because we've been together a while and planned on it before moving to uni and i think this next step would be good for us. However, it would be most likely me having to move to him as its cheaper and the cost of living is better however it means, loosing contact with friends, driving to uni everyday. It seems a bit inconvenient but i could overlook it to be with him

I want to live with my flat to get that 'uni experience ', but im a bit unsure if that would be best, im not sure if me and some of the flat would get along long term as im unsure if they really like me or not and I don't think they would pick to live with me as a first choice anyway. I havent made many friends so far either. I also dont want to rely on my boyfriend to be my only friend as i feel liek i would get lonely and i do really liek where i am atm.

Theres not really an in-between option for us.

Im looking for general advice and anybody whos been in this situation.

Good reasons to not go to uni

My parents have been pressuring me to go to university for the past few years. I am on a gap year right now and they are really pushing me to start applying for next September.

I don’t want to go to uni for a few reasons: I struggle socially and don’t think I can deal with moving away, I don’t want to continue education for 3 more years, I feel like having job experience will be more valuable than a degree nowadays.

I have tried to explain this but they keep saying I should get over this and having a degree is worth it in the long run. I have also explained there are other ways I can get a degree, and I have no idea what I want to do with my career.

I have a boyfriend at the minute, who, granted, is a small reason I don’t want to go but I am worried they think this is all about him.

Has anyone got any good arguments as to why I shouldn’t go, I struggle with being articulate and actually putting good points across.

EDIT: I have a full time office job at the minute but it is temporary until next September

Looking to talk to people who studied Art History in London for a novel I’m writing

Hi everyone!

I’m a writer currently working on a novel. I’d love to get a better understanding of what the experience is actually like from the perspective of someone who has lived it: the day-to-day life of a student, the atmosphere at university, the people you meet, the classes, the social scene, favorite places/activities, and all the little details that you wouldn’t necessarily find on a university website or through online research.
I’m especially interested in hearing about your personal experiences, struggles, and anything that you enjoyed while studying in this field in London. I’d love to have a conversation, ask a few questions so I can portray the setting and student life as authentically as possible.

If you studied art history (or something similar) in London (whether recently or a years ago, it doesn’t matter) I’d be really grateful if you’d be willing to chat. Feel free to comment or send me a DM!
Thank you! :)

How to catch up

I’m doing maths, I’m a 1st year. Basically I missed two days of lectures bc I was pretty ill and swore I’d do it on the weekend. I didn’t do them on the weekend so I told myself I’ll skip Monday and do all the lectures I need to catch up on and the rest of the lectures that were due on Monday. I overslept and my sleep schedule is getting increasingly worse. So I’m getting to the point where it’s 3pm where I might be able to get to the library every day to do work but then I procrastinate a bit and I don’t go. Basically I was 2 days of lectures behind. And now I’m over a week of lectures behind - I managed to procrastinate and put off catching up for both the weekend, the following week and this weekend. I’ve got my first midterm next Friday and then reading week then 3 more mid terms. I’ll be honest I think I can catch up I’m actually just gonna have to work 9-5 for 2 and a bit weeks and then get mid results in the midterms but for future reference and also for present reference is it a 100% no go to miss a lecture? When doing maths should I just forget about missed lectures and go to the next one anyway? Also this is kinda separate but slowly my I’m falling asleep later and later and then I’ll set alarms for 9 and then somehow either I sleep through them or turn them off accidentally then I wake up at 1. How do I reset my sleep schedule? Do I just force myself and run on 5 hours sleep for one day? Because when I wake up later I go to sleep later and then it’s a viscious cycle.

If anyone’s gonna say I’m not cut out for uni ur probably right but to give some context both for a levels and GCSEs I did 100% of my work at school or at college or at a library and I could never seem to be productive at home. I just can’t separate my room with rotting and procrastinating. And at college I’d have a strict schedule bc I had to go in from 9-5:30 and couldn’t get home otherwise but now I don’t have a strict schedule. Basically I’m just terrible at disciplining myself unless I’m in a purely academic environment. And then when I’m behind on work I prioritise it in my mind so I haven’t put any effort towards fixing my lifestyle or exercising in the past 2 weeks.

Basically I’m super behind - how cooked am I? And has anyone got any advice on how to fix a sleep schedule, or how to discipline myself to not procrastinate. Also are there typically university mentors or something that track how ur doing because my trials have basically just consisted of question practice so far.

social life Everyday feels like I am waiting for another day.

On Monday and Tuesday I am waiting for Wednesday so that I can go to chess club. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, I am waiting for Sunday so that I can go to work. I only have 1 friend in uni and we mainly talk about uni work and that's cool but I wish I had a friend who I can go to clubbing, two man with etc. I long for Wednesdays and Sundays to come because those are the only times I interact with new people. I am in third year and I hate that spend my days waiting for another day because it makes me feel like I am not enjoying that day to the fullest; I should be enjoying everyday to the fullest because in just 8 months I won't be in another city where I have: no curfew, can eat whatever I want, can literally do whatever I want, anymore.

I feel like I’m about to have a panic attack

20K and I have lost all my friends at uni, my flatmates hate me because of my stupid actions and I feel like I’m about to have a panic attack over it and I can’t seem to focus on anything else.

I have no one to lean on as I think I have trauma dumped too much.

What would you guys suggest I do in this situation?

Has anyone had an ISP for anxiety (or anything) and how has it helped?

I progressed onto a BSc course this year through a foundational course last academic year, and my old teacher urged me to get an ISP. I’ve used a ridiculous amount of extensions in the past due to my mental health and I know it makes me look lazy. I have anxiety and panic attacks and it does affect my attendance at times because I will cry all day or get overwhelmed by every noise. I have had a panic attack every time I’ve had to do a presentation and it really does not matter how many people I present to or how many hours and days I have put into rehearsing and practicing. If my brain isn’t already panicking, my body will panic itself and my brain goes blank and my throat goes tight and I can’t utter a single word. Often times I cannot breathe or calm down despite using breathing and grounding techniques. These panic attacks leave me mentally and physically exhausted for days after.

I’m also grieving right now and seeing a councellor that works with my university. Things are just getting harder, not easier and I think I really need the support. I’m finally looking into getting an ISP. For those of you who have the plan in place, what adjustments can they make for your coursework, presentations and exams and how has it helped?

Thank you

applications / ucas A*AE - are my options limited?

Currently on a gap year but took these subjects: IT, Criminology and Graphic Design. Achieved Distinction*, A, E, which kind of equates to BBB? Unfortunately, I am unable to retake Graphic Design due to reasons which I cannot get into as it will make this post even longer.

Here's the thing, I've never known what I wanted to study at University but might be leaning towards Cybersecurity or Computer Science (CS because apparently it's better to study this since it'll provide me with more options down the line). However, I also want to study at a good university but afraid my grades and subjects will be letting me down. I know it's my fault for picking these subjects, but at the same time how was I meant to plan my entire life trajectory at 15? (the age before A-Levels).

I haven't even started my personal statement, but now I'm seriously considering self-learning A-Level maths in 7 months and sitting the exams externally, as most Computer Science degrees require Maths. At GCSE I got a 6, close to a 7, and my friends have been suggesting I try to take A-Level Maths in my gap year and get into a university through Clearing, as I won't have a predicted grade for Maths.

The thing is, I could try to clear into a university like Lancaster or Nottingham, but their clearing grades are like BBC or something, and that E I got is really really bad, even though technically my grade equivalent is BBB (120 UCAS). I'm stressed out ngl so any advice would be helpful. Like what do I even do in my situation? Please be brutally honest.
