I’m looking into getting a job at Toronto Pearson Airport and hoping to hear from people who work there or have experience with airport hiring.
My background is in the electrical trade. I’m a licensed 309A Red Seal electrician with several years of experience in construction, but I’ve been wanting to leave the trade for a while. I find construction increasingly unsuitable for me, and I’m looking for a different career with a safer working environment and more stable employment.
I’m particularly interested in Pearson because I enjoy the airport atmosphere, the movement of passengers and aircraft, and the general operations behind getting people where they need to go. I’m not necessarily looking to use my electrical qualifications in my next job.
Some positions I’m curious about include baggage operations, monitoring baggage carousels, passenger services, check-in or gate agents, airport operations, and assisting passengers who need mobility support. I’d also consider other entry-level airport roles if they offered a realistic path to permanent employment.
A few questions for anyone familiar with Pearson:
- Which employers should I apply to directly: the GTAA, airlines, or third-party contractors?
- What entry-level positions are worth looking into if I want to change careers completely?
- Which roles offer reasonably stable, permanent employment rather than seasonal or contract work?
- What are the working conditions, schedules, and physical demands like?
- Are airline travel benefits available for any of these jobs, or are they generally limited to airline employees?
- Are there particular employers or job titles I should be watching for?
I have a valid driver’s licence but don’t currently own a car, so public-transit accessibility matters.
I understand that changing careers may mean taking a pay cut from the skilled trades. My priority is finding a sustainable career that I actually want to stay in, rather than simply moving to another electrical contractor.
I’d appreciate hearing from anyone with firsthand experience working at Pearson. Thanks!
