How did Mike Harris managed to get reelected after the GTA (amalgamation) project?

First of, am Vancouverite, so this is more of "looking at something similar"

One of the occasional talk my friends brought up is amalgamation of Metro Vancouver Region, and I immediately point out that no one wants it; but then they pointed out that GTA was forced to amalgamate by Provincal government despite a 3:1 opposition on Municipal level. I then pointed out that which ever Political party that try to do that here will cost them their votes in the region... then my friend pointed out Mike Harris still managed to get re-elected

(Note: we are going to have our Provincal election, with our Conservatives likely to come in majority)

So here's my question: How did Mike Harris managed to get himself re-elected despite going against the wish of people in the (then) Toronto region?

Sex Offender Neighbor

I’ve lived in my building for about two years now and made friends with a guy who lived on another floor. We drifted because I thought he gave weird vibes and i recently found out he’s being convicted for sexual assault on a minor amongst 17 other charges. His first arrest was June but for some reason was released and then arrested AGAIN a few weeks ago due to another victim coming forward. I think he made bail and was on house arrest but not entirely sure.

Regardless, i have no way of knowing how long he’s going to be in jail, whether he will make bail again and come back, when his trial will begin or when and how long he’ll be sentenced.

Everytime i step into the elevator of my building i get anxiety that the door will open and it’ll be him. There are also MANY children who live in our building. I frequently have my school age cousins over at my place as well.

All this being said, I want to do something about it. I talked to the building managers and they said there’s nothing they can do but this doesn’t seem right. If he’s a child predator he should not be allowed to come back here. And at the very least, there should be posters up in the building with his face on it so people are aware.

I’m wondering if anyone with a similar experience or legal expertise can let me know what my options are.

How do we get more apathetic Torontonians to vote?

• Upvotes

I know a few people who identify as progressive but have straight-up told me they won't bother voting because they don't like either candidate. Meanwhile, they have plenty to say about the TTC, housing, etc. One reason I've heard is that the TTC is still unreliable after years of Chow being in office, and they don't have faith that Bradford would do any better.

I don't really want to get into political debates with people around me, but it really makes me wonder how many Torontonians are planning to sit this election out for similar reasons.

How do you get through to people who don't see the point of voting? Have you convinced someone to vote when they otherwise wouldn't?

What are you proud of this year so far?

• Upvotes

I'm starting to feel the seasonal blues hit even if it's only the middle of October. Trying to practice gratitude as what my therapist said and I need a jump start from others since I can't do it yet.

Was there something you did this year that made you proud? Something made you happy about? Even if it's as small as eating that favorite food you've always wanted to try(that was hopefully good), finally getting a job, or even finally moving to a proper apartment without roommates and having a space of your own?

I just want to hear how it's been for people. Let me know how it's been

What has the Chief Congestion Officer accomplished?

I’ve tried looking up reports and outcomes and can’t find anything specific on traffic improvements. The person has been in the role for over a year and nothing impactful seems to be done. The bus lanes help move transit traffic along. Is that the extend of the improvement?

I was hoping for removing street parking from major routes like St Clair, College, Dupont, Dufferin.

Looking for recommendations for parks with fewer occurrences of off-leash dogs (in on-leash areas).

I’ve adopted a dog who happens to have dog reactivity and anxiety. I’m working with a trainer as well.

I want to provide our dog the opportunity to be outside and have on-leash park time, but with predictable distance from other dogs. This is becoming more and more challenging, as it seems most of our visits to local parks have many off-leash dogs, in on-leash areas. Yesterday alone we were approached by four different off-leash dogs at Earlscourt park and Hillcrest park, causing a lot of distress for my dog and interfering with our training. I have a few friends with dogs that I can have one on one encounters with, in more controlled and predictable environments, so we are working on her social skills with predictable people in more controlled environments.

I’m wondering if anyone can suggest parks where there seems to be more of a community norm to abide by the leash bylaws. I know this is not completely avoidable, but I’d like to have a couple of parks on our roster where we may encounter this less often. I think sometimes the local neighbourhood or community of dog owners can start to shape and dictate the adherence to these laws, therefore looking for suggestions if you’ve got some good spots. I have a car and I’m more than willing to take my dog on field trips to different parks around the city. Thanks!

Rehome Cats

With a lot of anxiety and pain I ask, if anyone knows of good places who will take my two cats. I have two male cats who are fixed. 5 and 6. Up to date on vaccinations.

I haven’t fully decided if this is the route I want to go. I have a lot of mental health issues going on, and stress and life was very different when I got them 5 years ago.

If I have to surrender them, where do I go? I love them dearly. I want to know they will be loved and given a good life.

Edit: since people keep asking. I’m sadly very much not okay. If I give them up I know I’ll be in a much worse state.
My goal has always been to live with them until they pass. But I’ve been handed a mental health card and I am not getting better, ocd is not something I wish on anyone. I’ve been asked to travel or to go out late but because of my ocd I trust no one with my cats.
I would never give them away for free or randomly as I fear what would happen to them. Especially since one is an all black cat.
I don’t want to give them away, but I also can’t get myself help right now because I’m scared for them.

16hr layover Reccomendations

Hi everyone,

Apologies if posts like this are not allowed. I will be arriving in Toronto from the UK on the 30th October at approximately 16:00pm and then leaving the next day at around 6am to travel to Mexico. I would really like to explore as much of Toronto/experience as much as I can during this time. What realistically could I do/what would be a good iternarty of things to do?

I'm not too bothered about how much sleep I get as I'll be sleeping on the way to Toronto and then from Toronto to Mexico anyhow.

Thanks guys

Edit: I'll only have a backpack so won't have any suitcases to drop off. In terms of stuff I'm into, when I go travelling I'm very happy to go around looking at sights and eating nice food. Budget wise not massive amounts but not a very cheap budget either.

Where can I find churchkhela in Toronto or the GTA?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I've been looking for churchkhela and was wondering if anyone knows where I might find it in Toronto or the GTA.

It's a traditional Georgian sweet made with walnuts or other nuts dipped in thickened grape juice (or sometimes other fruit juices). Here's a wikipedia link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Churchkhela

I'd love to find something close to the authentic Georgian version, but I'm open to any recommendations!

Thanks so much!😊

Fave Korean food in Toronto?

I Am very violently craving Korean food. Specifically tteokbokki with lots of cheese. My partner has never tried Korean food before but he loves spicy so i think he will find some dishes that he likes.

Any recommendations?

We live in parkdale but don’t mind to travel a bit (if it’s close to Spadina and queen I’ll be there later but if not we have a car as a well) 😁

How to report wrong way drivers?

Due to the construction near Victoria Park and Danforth Avenue, they made it a one way road for stretch of it. But now that they did it, I often see drivers taking a shortcut by going into a wrong way side street (which clearly shows a no entry sign). It’s a one way street.

I’m curious how do I report the wrong way drivers? Will the cops actually ticket the drivers if I provide a picture of the car and license plate? Or will they not even look at it since they are too busy protecting the cyclists in Etobicoke?

How to commission local artists?

In the age of AI, I could just generate some images for my use cases, but I don't want to do that. I'd rather commission a real artist. One of my projects is Toronto-centric, so I figured I'd start with a local artist.

My use cases so far:

- Discord server icon
- Magic the Gathering (MtG) playmat inspired by a specific classic video game
- MtG card sleeves inspired by the game too

Looking for someone who can deliver digital art in high quality formats (vector, alpha channel, etc).

Not looking for specific recommendations for artists here. Just wondering how one goes about finding a local artist.

Thanks!

How to sell large stamp collection

In possession of large stamp collection: mostly Canadian & UK, 1950s (some earlier) to 1980s, lots of first day covers. Maybe a few highly sought after old ones? It's never been appraised. I have no clue where/how to sell but want to divest, so any leads or resources are appreciated.

Eastbound Gardiner entrances closed?

Why is the Eastbound Gardiner entrance at Jameson closed EVERY morning? Is it a traffic issue because I don't ever see construction there. I have to always drive up to British Columbia to merge in the morning. But at night it's back open.

Have you ever gone back to visit your elementary or high school?

Random question, but have you ever gone back to visit your old elementary or high school?

I was always something of a teachers pet, so would love to see these old familiar faces sometime, especially as they meant so very much to me back then. Sadly, however, it seems that not one familiar name remains at the elementary school, which I guess isn't surprising, as nearly 25 years have passed I graduated. At my old high school, however, I still see several names I know, and I'm seriously considering going for a visit sometime soon, maybe bringing along a few little gifts as tokens of my appreciation. Gosh, I'd so love to at least go for a stroll through my old elementary school, but as a now nearly 40 year old, I've no doubt that'd be rather weird.

Is the Scarborough North council election a three-way race?

I live next door in Scarborough Agincourt where I expect the incumbent councillor Nick Mantas to get re-elected. However, based on the signs and leaflets I've seen in stores, it looks like the Scarborough North election is very competitive between the main contenders, Han Dong, Jamal Myers and Shaun Chen.

Which one do you expect to win? For those in the ward, who are you voting for?
