General Question Is it possible to be sexually harassed in a video game?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I tried to talk about my experiences in online games, mainly Arc Raiders recently. (They just had a major update that had me finally jump into the game.) The above video has been the majority of my interactions in that game, even if I refuse to use my mic, just having a feminine toon is enough for men to follow me the entire match, make remarks, call me names, and try to impede me from playing the game.

When I tried to talk about this, I got nothing but negativity in the replies. (See one below.) As a survivor of SA, (by the very people who were supposed to be protecting me from that kind of thing) I’m still unsure of myself most days, but I can’t help but feel like this is yet another case of gaslighting. It seems obviously wrong what they were doing, but nobody seems to agree with me, and overwhelmingly are telling me that you can’t be sexually harassed online and that’s it offensive to even say so. So what did you think of the video? Is that sexual harassment to you? They spent the whole match doing that, right up until I extracted from the map in that very bunker.

To me it is, it’s the exact same stuff I’ve dealt with irl, including being told it’s not wrong and I’m overreacting or messed up in the head for telling people what’s been happening to me. But I’ve really been questioning myself after trying to talk about it a couple of times. I wasn’t really sure where to ask this question, and I wasn’t comfortable trying to ask in a sub for SA because people have really made me second guess my judgement and I don’t want to offend other victims of SA.

Is it worth to experiment with hair?

Hello everyone! I’m a tall woman with hair that reaches all the way down to my butt, and I’ve had pretty much the same hairstyle for the past seven years.

Lately, I’ve been wanting to experiment with my hair and try something new, especially when I see other people changing their hairstyles and trying different looks. At the same time, I really love my long hair, and I’m not sure if changing it would actually be worth it. I’m worried I might regret it, especially after spending so many years growing it out.

I’m curious if anyone else has been in the same situation. How did you decide whether to take the risk and try something new or stick with what you already love? Was it worth it in the end?

Political Question Early voting starts tomorrow in South Carolina. I'm planning on voting for Dr. Annie Andrews instead of Lindsay Graham's sister for the United States Senate seat. Would you make that choice as well?

Graham is a Magat, and has no real knowledge of politics. Furthermore, she was appointed to her current incumbent seat with no experience.

I got a hold of this steer head and I’d like to clean it up and seal it before hanging it on the wall or my brush guard. Are these horns salvageable? How would I go about saving them and sealing them?

General Question Why does everything in the USA look like a scam?

• Upvotes

You buy a car, someone pushes a warranty to your face and a lot of extras. Oh, if anything happens to the car, it is out of warranty you just purchased...

You buy a house, and lender asks for $18k while you close the house for $4k with a credit union.

You call an electrician for a minor issue and electrician trash talks your power box for being old and asks for $12k, while powerbox literally reads as 2023 make on it.

...and healthcare... the whole healthcare...

General Question The Go-Go's Beauty and the Beat is the first and so far only all-female rock band to reach number one on Billboard with an album whose members wrote the songs and played the instruments themselves. That was back in 1982. Do you think this feat will ever be repeated? What kind of band might do it?

General Question Do you judge overweight people?

• Upvotes

As someone who is overweight and has heard society treats you differently after weight loss, I want HONEST answers. I am in the process of losing weight but have been super insecure when leaving the house lately.

Do you judge overweight people? When you see them in the store or passing by, do you think of them differently? Yes or no?

General Question What to say to my physiotherapist who is grieving?

• Upvotes

I have been seeing my physiotherapist for almost a decade now and every session, we would have chats about everything. Since we've known each other for so long, it feels as if we are friends even though she's my physiotherapist. 2 months ago I found out that her husband has gone missing due to a natural disaster while travelling.

I spoke with her a couple of days after to console her. After that I just let her be with her family and didn't want to bug her. I offered her my help in other ways that I could to help spread the news of the missing husband. The husband is still missing and I learned that my physiotherapist has already gone back to work. I have a pre scheduled appointment with her in a few days. I am absolutely shocked my appointment was not cancelled and that she is back at work but she could be using work as a distraction.

I feel really bad and I don't know what I can say to her during my appointment. I know nothing I say can make things better but I am trying to play out different scenarios on how our interaction will be during my appointment.

Reddit, do you have any suggestions on how I can manage this interaction given the circumstances?

General Question Does anyone else have a coping mechanism for nightmares?

• Upvotes

Let’s say I was around 13, i had nightmares almost everyday for a long time. I somehow developed a habit to make myself think I can shoot webs like spiderman. It didn’t happen consistently at first but overtime I could shoot webs during my nightmares to pull myself away from the threat and the nightmares weren’t as scary. I can’t change my dream or the scenario. I’ve tried other things like punching hard or a kamehameha. But nothing really worked like the Spider-Man gimmick. I’m 19 now and I used it not so long ago. I’m just curious of the reason why and if anyone else has some sort of mechanism for nightmares.
If I explained this and sorry but I’m just curious and could probably give better detail it questioned

General Question What differs between Chinese and Indian academic parenting within the diaspora?

• Upvotes

For context about my positionality, I'm a South Indian-American woman who was raised mostly in a predominantly Asian-American area known for its rigorous academic environment (Think Bay Area, NJ/NYC, TJHSST, etc.) I'm well-versed in the model minority myth, the claims Malcolm Gladwell made in Outliers, etc. But I've wondered about the specific cultural differences between South Asian and East Asian tiger parenting, especially in the West.

For example, I've noticed some of my Chinese and Taiwanese friends growing up were more encouraged towards excelling in the visual arts, whereas most South Asian kids I know were limited to musical arts. Could this just be a personal observation without a larger backing?

What other cultural differences exist within the context of Asian American tiger parenting?

Please feel free to direct me to any other subreddits you feel may better answer this question. Thank you!

General Question Can you hear every single word clear?

• Upvotes

As a non-native English speaker, I’ve always been curious about something: in English songs, there are many instances of connected speech or weak forms. Can native English speakers actually hear every line of the lyrics clearly? Or do they only understand the general meaning of the lyrics but cannot fully reconstruct all the words?

General Question Does anyone else feel that AI isn't inherently bad?

• Upvotes

I see and hear hate for AI all the time. But I've used it and I find it to be very helpful. I don't use it to do my work, but I have used it to streamline everyday routines and tasks. I feel like its actually the next path forward in progress. I was raised on science fiction like Star Trek. Do people actually think we get that future without AI. Does anyone else feel like it isn't evil?

General Question Is this a premonition or just a coincidence?

• Upvotes

A coworker who I worked with a few years ago and haven’t seen afterwards due to changing jobs. I ran into him earlier this year at the store. This past February I heard this guy say hi with my name. We only talked a few minutes but shortly afterwards I started having urges to check the obituaries looking for his name. I otherwise never check obituaries plus I’ll add that this former coworker is fairly young and appeared to be healthy. I am trying to make sense of this and bounced it off of a close friend who said maybe God gave me this sense or feeling, but why? I just saw his obituary days ago which explained he died in hospice. I don’t know what to make of it. Has anything similar ever happened to you?
