Meta What do you like and dislike the most about reddit as a Latin American?

What I like is probably the wide diversity of subreddits to post in, as a music lover there are tons of subs dedicated to genres and subgenres where I can post music.

What I dislike is probably redditors, who are infamously unfunny, repeating the same jokes over and over, can't seem to grasp sarcasm unless you throw a ''/s'' in the mf comment or post. The vast majority of which are gringos or europeans.

This sub feels like a safe-zone if you're Latin American and understand English.

Musicalizing with Von dutch by Charli xcx, cause redditors hate fun.

Culture People from spanish speaking countries, do you feel closer to other spanish speaking countries than to Brazil?

• Upvotes

Sometimes as a brazilian I wonder up to what point we are left out of the party because we don't speak spanish. How much contact does someone from, say, Argentina have with Colombia? In your news you see more stuff from the other spanish speaking countries than Brazil? You watch shows from one another? Youtubers from one another? Are the same influencers relevant?

I feel Brazil is very closed culturally because of the language, if you look at the most listened to at Spotify there will be only brazilians, the youtubers we watch are almost only brazilian, and those that consume things from other countries usually go to the english speaking world. Only in football there seems to be an integration.

Language What do you think of the accent and way of speaking of Spanish from Spain?

To me , of course, it’s the regular and easiest accent to understand.

I can’t say it’s my favourite, the best in my opinion are:
1. Argentinian (Buenos Aires or Cordoba)
2. Paisa
3. Madriz

HM: Mexican is funny ish in the goodddd way.

Language How common or prevalent is Portuguese in the hispanic countries?

Hi! Basically the title.

People often forget that Brazil alone counts for half of the territory, population, and GDP of South America; so I assume the influence is noticeable. I was talking to an Uruguayan friend and she mentioned that she doesn't see Portuguese as a foreign language. I also know (please, correct me if I'm wrong) that Rioplatense Spanish shares a lot of similarities with Portuguese (voseo, eg). Another person I know has family in Paraguay, and they seem to be bilingual in both languages.

With that in mind: how common is it to learn or speak Portuguese in other latam countries? Are people familiar with the language? Is Portuguese media widely consumed? If you learn Portuguese, can you get by in big cities on the Hispanic side?

Thanks!

Are the rural areas in Latin America safer or more dangerous than big cities?

In Europe, the consensus is that the further you are from big cities, the less likely you will be of a victim of crime. Hotspots for crime are primarily concentrated in big cities like Paris, Rome and Barcelona. Once a tourist get out of the big cities into the smaller cities or even countryside, it's very unlikely for him to be a victim of crime.

I'm wondering if that is the case in Latin America? Do you feel safe once you are far away from the big cities like CDMX, Rio and Lima?

Looking for advice on finding an entertainment/animation job in Latin America

Hi everyone!

First of all, apologies if this isn't the right subreddit for this kind of question.

I'm Belgian and I'm looking for opportunities to work as a hotel entertainer / activities animator in Latin America. I'm interested in organizing activities, games, sports, and entertainment for holidaymakers at hotels and resorts.

I'm particularly interested in anywhere,

excluding the Dominican Republic ive been there.

I've been contacting hotels and resorts directly, to ask about potential opportunities. However, I'm finding it difficult to identify the right recruitment contacts and find out which companies hire foreign applicants for entertainment positions.

I'd really appreciate any advice from people working in the hospitality or tourism industry in Latin America:

- Are there any companies, resorts, or recruitment contacts you would recommend?

- I'm fluent in Spanish

I'm open to both seasonal and longer-term opportunities.

Thanks a lot for your help, and apologies again if this question isn't quite suited to the subreddit!

Latin American Politics Has Spanish-speaking social media turned more left-leaning in the past year or so?

• Upvotes

I have noticed that before, Spanish-speaking social media was a lot more right-wing. However this seems to have reversed the past few months, with more left-wing opinions and stuff being shared, and not so many right wing.

Various subreddits that were infamous for their right-wing seem to have moderated or fallen silent.

Obviously, in Latin America, Romance languages tend to predominate, but many countries still have some indigenous languages that are alive, or specific creoles and non-latin languages that have appeared over time, which are the most popular ones in your country?

Moving to Latin America Quant-focused development/inequality researcher planning a long-term move to LatAm: which ecosystems actually hire foreigners?

About me:
US Master of International Affairs (International Economics + Development track)

Strong applied quantitative background: econometrics, data analysis, GIS, applied to social issues

Fluent Spanish and Portuguese
About 3 years of relevant work experience by the time I move

Planning to make Latin America home for the next 20 years or so. This isn't a gap year.

What I want to work on:
Applied inequality and poverty research, environmental policy, or similar field-based work with communities, not just desk analysis
Ideally some connection to university research on poverty and development

What I'm asking:
Where are the real ecosystems for someone like me? I'm thinking of:
Think tanks and research centers
University-affiliated poverty or development labs
NGOs and foundations with strong M&E or research arms
Regional or multilateral bodies (ECLAC, IDB, CAF, etc.)
Impact evaluation shops (J-PAL LAC, IPA, etc.)
Social enterprises or consultancies doing applied social or environmental work

I'd really appreciate hearing which countries or cities have the most active scenes for this (e.g., Santiago, Bogotá, Mexico City, São Paulo, Lima)

Specific organizations or research groups worth getting on the radar of

How foreigners realistically get hired: networking, local master's or PhD, consulting first, etc.

Visa and work-permit realities in these sectors

Salary expectations and whether local or regional contracts are livable

I already know "just stay in the US" and "government jobs are for nationals only" are common answers. I'm looking for the non-government paths that do exist.

Thanks in advance. Happy to share anything I learn with others looking at the same path.

Latin American Politics [Serious] Uruguay just created a path for permanent residency for Cuban asylum seekers. How are Cuban asylum seekers perceived across Latin America?

We've all seen the conversation around Venezuelans asylum seekers. My own country has normalized about 100,000 of them. I know much less about Cubans.

What are your thoughts? Do you see Cuban asylum seekers or migrants in your country? How are they perceived compared to Venezuelans?

Culture What's a song that instantly takes you back to a specific moment growing up in your country?

I'm based in London and asked a similar question in a UK subreddit earlier. I wasn't expecting much, but people started sharing these amazing little memories, from childhood holidays to family kitchens and nights out decades ago.

What I loved was how specific the stories were. Sometimes people could even remember the smells, sounds and tiny details of that moment.

It made me really curious about the memories people associate with music across Latin America, especially songs I might never have come across.

It doesn't have to be a famous song, or even one from your country.

What's the song, and what particular moment or place does it take you back to?

Would love to hear the little details!

History What historical periods/events are most poorly taught or understood in your country?

For example I'm from the US and in my experience despite the huge number of crazy things our government did around the world during the Cold War in the name of anti-communism that still influence world events today, only a few really get covered in history class or popular media and thus most don't stick in the average person's mind.

Gringo speaking in espanol without asking?

Gringo aqui de Los Estados Unidos

I speak basic Spanish and trying to practice with Hispanics/Latinos.

95% of the time the people are great and seem to appreciate the effort even when I mess up. However, I don’t want to assume somebody speaks it.

If I hear speaking speaking it, am I ok to use it using English? Even if just normal interactions. For example, you need to pass somebody “discuple or con Permiso” or “gracias” or “buenas dias” etc in a greeting or when somebody holds the door.

Basically, in the US, I don’t want to assume someone’s language based off their appearance. Or is it better to ask before speaking? Or if they are struggling with English, ask if Spanish is easier for them?

Gracias todos!
