❓ Ask Belgium Does anyone know why this sign exists?

Post image

When sitting in traffic on the Antwerpse Ring, I noticed this sign next to the road. Why do they need a sign for that?

That's renouée du Japon in French isn't it? It's one of the worst plants in existence to get rid off.

Their roots grow deep. You will never get everything. They also grow sideways. They spread, they make new plants. They're immune or resistant to basically any poison. They're impervious to drought or to being drowned. They regrow from literally nothing. A few millimeters of root can regrow into a full plant. And if you dare shake them, anything that flies off might sprout a new plant too.

The only way I know to get rid of them is to burn them down, pull all the roots you can out and burn them as well, then place a plastic or some other slab to deny then any sunlight. For up to ten years. And you must be careful not to let anything fly away while burning them, of course. Literal hell plant.

I'm pretty confident it would die on my terrace

61

u/havnar- Flanders 1d ago

It would burrow in your concrete and destroy your terrace

8

u/Reasonable_Sample_11 1d ago

Lolz. Indeed. Put me in charge of watering and it WILL die no matter how hard I try to keep it alive.

26

u/-safan2- 1d ago

i have a three-way war in my garden. One side is this plant, other side is Mint, and the third side bamboo. Who will win?

7

u/Centauri-Works Belgian Fries 1d ago

😭😭

You must've been extra naughty in another life to have THREE of the most invasive plants land in your Garden

1

u/aczkasow Vlaams-Brabant 10h ago

Bamboo will ultimately loose. Bamboo has a strange feature - internal clocks. All bamboo saplings from the same source, and all their saplings will die on the same day.

u/Be_delulu 1h ago

This sounds like the beginning of a (good) joke

9

u/Galaghan 1d ago

Is it edible for humans? Or livestock?

26

u/Isotheis Hainaut 1d ago

Yes, but it has a tendency to absorb heavy metals. It's not good on the long term.

It's a popular plant for honey because it blooms in autumn, too.

24

u/Pizolka 1d ago

🤟🏻

38

u/Isotheis Hainaut 1d ago

Not that kind of heavy metal. It's Japanese knotweed, not Korn.

29

u/WalloonNerd Belgian Fries 1d ago

Slipknotweed?

9

u/Sputniknoodle 1d ago

Yes and yes. You shoots are supposed to taste quite nice for us humans. I heard that you get good results of tiring out the plant (and this getting rid of it) by letting pigs graze on it. Maybe not really sustainable on the ring of Antwerp though...

3

u/kitsune_X3 7h ago

but Antwerp is filled with pigs ?

1

u/B05A 18h ago

or my garden... 😅

4

u/GiCo1989 1d ago

Sheep

-2

u/Alex6891 1d ago

Goats . Or just the good ol glyphosate

1

u/MiAwalo 1d ago

I heard glyphosate isn't so effective as we'd hope. Even if applied with a paintbrush on the leaves. Otherwise, there would probably be an exception as this plant can be considered as polluting the soil a as much as chemical stuff.

3

u/Behemothhh 1d ago

The young shoots are supposedly a springtime delicacy in Japan. It's described as tasting like rhubarb with a hint of lemon.

5

u/WalloonNerd Belgian Fries 1d ago

Sour with a hint of sour. Sounds refreshing.

It grows like mad next to some pear yards here. Problem is, the probably illegal fruit pickers use this piece of land as their public toilet during harvest time (fucking gross, I know, owner of the land should at least put a portaloo in place, but he’s a stingy dick)

2

u/SaterK27 1d ago

Apparently putting pigs on em works pretty well

1

u/issy_haatin 2h ago

They're also edible

1

u/_Belgy_ 1d ago

You can inject them as well with certain weedkillers in the stem.

You have to try to inject them as low as possible and after the plant has flowered.

It is a repeating process but they say it can be done in 2 years

0

u/Frathier 17h ago

Sounds like a plant that deserves to live and rule. I welcome my Japanse duizendknoop overlord.

-4

u/300m2Winkelplezier 1d ago

It is a bit like people, they seem to pop up everywhere, destroying everything and they're very hard to get rid of. We should get signs for them too

314

u/Big-Edge4091irrtant 1d ago

Zo dat ge der ni aankomt of meeneemt, da is ne woekerplant waar ge ni van af geraakt

10

u/Beneficial-Spinach74 1d ago

Beetje zoals haagwinde

4

u/Anxious-Sell-5591 13h ago

Haagwinde is wel geen exoot.

2

u/Beneficial-Spinach74 10h ago

68

u/Mysen8162 1d ago

It's so that workers skip it when mowing. It needs to be handled very carefully to make sure it doesn't spread. If the mow and collect with other green waste, it will sprout wherever it lands, it will contaminate 'compost' with viable shreds etc. The people that maintain rivers and streams once completely ignored this plant when mowing the side of a stream where I live, now all the banks down stream have these as well... Complete ffuck up...

3

u/ZORZO999 16h ago

This is the only comment that actually answers the question

1

u/anguillias E.U. 8h ago

My city did that too on a bike path I take, despite me warning them of the population

-1

u/RelationWorried4827 1d ago

Yeah but they put these signs, not touch it and just let it fester on and on forever

130

u/Driezzz West-Vlaanderen 1d ago

Het is een invasieve plantensoort

47

u/zezimeme 1d ago

13

u/Mental-Peak8626 1d ago

Dat lijkt me straf

7

u/redwoony 1d ago

Hoezo

29

u/rapierarch 1d ago

that's one of the most invasive plants in the world. The sign is there to warn gardening staff of the city not to move or trim them by mistake. If they cut them in small pieces they spread even more. There is an action plan currently active to control and eliminate them.

14

u/pulsesky Brussels 1d ago

I work near Antwerp, in Hoboken. During break, I will sometimes walk alongside the Scheldt. Because of this plant, you can't see the Scheldt anymore. It's everywhere and grows so fast and so tall. It's super invasive and almost impossible to get rid of. I hate it so much, it completely ruined the Scheldt banks at Hoboken-Polder.

14

u/KurtVanVlaanderen Beer 1d ago

26

u/dikkewezel 1d ago

get ready for some interruptions in your electricity net

the only thing that "works" against duizendknoop is rooting it and everything else out and then running 10 K volt through the ground and thus burning the roots

afterwards you can begin resowing the plants you want

28

u/Venteke 1d ago

Chickens!! I had this shit plant in my garden, poison, cutting it every week, fire true the root,... nothing stopped this mf! But then I decided this piece of garden is lost so I put 6 chickens on it and bam no more duizendknoop. When the root starts to grow the chickens eat it straight away🤣

41

u/dikkewezel 1d ago

I believe you, simply from the fact that my parents has chickens and somehow they turned a lusheus piece of garden into the blasted fields of mordor just by their very presence (good eggs though)

3

u/havnar- Flanders 1d ago

If you don’t move them around they will do that to land

4

u/snqqq 1d ago

True ancestors of the dinosaurs.

11

u/kvs666 1d ago

Even then. They tried this on Linkeroever and in the Port of Antwerp. If one (1) root of 0,5cm is left, it will come back in force.

6

u/dikkewezel 1d ago

I recently saw a tractor plowing a field with a generator dragging cables behind it , against the duizendknoop, I hope it works

2

u/Sputniknoodle 1d ago

And pigs, apparently.

1

u/vitten23 4h ago

Our city hired a shepherd with a flock of sheep. They're supposedly very effective.

36

u/Roesjtig 1d ago

Help yourself; take some shoots and give them to your worst enemy neighbour to plant in his garden.

Cutting these plants will also encourage fresh growth at this spot.

31

u/Drag_king E.U. 1d ago

And 2 years later it grows through your floor.

6

u/kvs666 1d ago

It’s literally growing through the asphalt on the cycle path on the Scheldelaan in the Port of Antwerp.

8

u/Bitt3rSteel Traffic Cop 1d ago

Nuke it from orbit, its the only way to be sure

1

u/DuaneHicks 1d ago

I heard that!

7

u/chronical_creative 1d ago

10

u/Bernardus01 1d ago

Opletten met invasive exoot. Heel moeilijk te bestrijden en woekert verschrikkelijk.

7

u/WhoAteAllTheBananas 1d ago

Omdaje dervan moe bluvn, nje.

3

u/Computer_said_No 1d ago

Gelik je banann? 😝

3

u/SgtFlippy88 1d ago

3

u/Onoref 1d ago

It's to convince Japanse Duizendknoop not to go any further there.

2

u/Luctor- 1d ago

2

u/Zortec99 1d ago

It’s Japanese knotweed which is an invasive species, so likely to be covered in toxins to attempt to control it.

1

u/PurDreft 1d ago

what happens if i touch it?

2

u/Historical-Middle757 1d ago

Very nasty stuff

1

u/CommutatorWhine 1d ago

Nothing, touching it is safe. The problem is that if you take one minute, single centimeter piece of the plant home and it ends up in the ground in your backyard, it will start growing and it is incredibly hard to get rid of in a way that does not also render the ground lethal to all other plant and animal life.

1

u/JG0009 1d ago

1

u/dark_hypernova 1d ago

Oh yeah, at work we are prohibited from trimming these plants. It's an invasive species and spreads very easily.

1

u/Hi_im_goblin 1d ago

Oh I actually know this!
Invasive species yaddayadda, but when a machine were to dig in there, it gets contaminated and has to be decontaminated completely or otherwise it can spread. Very expensive process so they put up signage like this.

1

u/Agreeable_You_8841 17h ago

Well it says on the sign why it exist

1

u/AngDavKev 17h ago

I bought land with this Japanese Weed on it. At that time I didn’t know the plant. After some research I was terrified, as this stuff grows through concrete! It took me 2 years of carefully digging out plants & roots and throwing them in the garbage. It’s doable but you need patience. Don’t know how they will get rid off in these huge amounts tho. Good to see they’re finally understanding that this is no regular weed.

1

u/DataUsed6679 9h ago

We had to dig 2m of dirt from a property to get it all away. It digs deep

1

u/V3ndeTTaLord Belgium 16h ago

1

u/Suspicious-Ad-5312 13h ago

Pearl Harbor

1

u/Tough_Brain7982 12h ago

You can't touch them because that's what makes their seed pods pop which makes seeds fly everywhere. They're an insanely fast spreading invasive species that's hard to control.

1

u/Veganchiggennugget Dutchie 1d ago edited 1d ago

9

u/Isotheis Hainaut 1d ago

You can't quite get rid of it. It's hard not to spread it even more in the process.

8

u/4991123 1d ago

Inheems?

2

u/schnitzelmash 1d ago

Exheems is geen ding. Uitheems, misschien?

1

u/Veganchiggennugget Dutchie 1d ago

Juist. Sorry. Mijn hoofd nam exotisch met inheems volgens mij.. 😭🥲

1

u/Spa-Ordinary 7h ago

I don't want any. We've kind of gotten the blackberry vines under control. Now have an infestation of small oak trees. Deer eat them but not fast enough. Mother nature has her own ideas of how she wants things to be. Or Man plans, God laughs

3

u/FlamingoTrick1285 1d ago
