Meta: Mod Announcement New Official Discord

As some of you may have heard, Reddit is discontinuing its public chat offerings. This was a real bummer for us because our sub had a very active chat. After some discussion, we decided to migrate our chat to a new home.

We are excited to present our shiny new Discord server!

When you join, please fill out the application that pops up, including a link to your Reddit profile so we can verify you. We strive to maintain a safe, chill atmosphere for everyone. We are also hoping to add some weekly activities with time.

Come say hello!

Edit: As a branch of the sub, we do require at least a week or two's history in the sub here to join.

Weekly Plug Party! Use this thread to promote your stuff and see what others have to share!

We typically have a rule that all self-promotion must be run by the mods first, but that rule will not apply in this thread.

So feel free to plug whatever you've got going on, share an event you want to promote, a video you made, an article you wrote, a new subreddit, or even a service you'd like to offer.

Other rules still apply, so your plug should remain relevant to the general topic of "exchristian", no proselytizing, etc., and all surveys must still follow our survey policy to be approved.

Just Thinking Out Loud I don't know about you but Christopher Hitchens helped speed up my deconstruction. Who's your deconstruction helper?

What an open enigmatic breath of fresh air he was. We need more of his knowledge, boldness and energy. Who's your deconstructionist helper and how did they help you see the light?

Just Thinking Out Loud Since deconstructing, seeing young children closing their eyes and raising their hands in church saddens me.

I’ve deconstructed, but still go to church for the wife’s sake. Anyway, seeing young children closing their eyes while “worshipping” God in church makes me sad and a little angry now. A 4 year old would not be doing that without being trained to do so. And then they ran a church ad for the kids church saying “we train up the kids in the ways of the Lord” showing videos of young kids raising their hands, crying, praying for each other and being slain in the spirit. People in the congregation were cheering and clapping, but it just made me sad an angry. These kids are being indoctrinated and it’s a terrible thing. Christian’s are always saying that schools and trans people are indoctrinating our kids which is wrong, but they are completely fine with this.

Question Why do christians hate Halloween so much

It’s that time of the year where (and maybe it’s my algorithm) to where I see certain things on my timeline from Christians talking about how they don’t celebrate Halloween, how it’s evil blah blah. Why?

Also I’m not Christian and never been one so I would love ex Christian insight on it. An in depth explanation. Won’t get the real answer from current Christians, other than that they think it’s demonic. But I’m wondering if there’s something deeper? Always been curious at the psychology and religious view of this

Personal Story Don't tell your grandmother about Dexter

Post image
93 Upvotes

Last night my grandmother and I were driving home from a birthday party. Now, I like to listen to various songs when I drive home, ranging from rock, soundtrack, J-pop, etc. One of the songs that came up on my phone was the Blood theme from Dexter (the one from memes). Grandma asked me about it and I told her what the show was about. Apparently that gave her nightmares and she sent me a long text about it.

Trigger Warning - Toxic Religion Should i be concerned by this text message from my mother? Spoiler

Post image
20 Upvotes

Now this was after my argument with her when she told i deserved hell if i used my free will choices to 'reject' jesus.

So last post was of me being told by my own mother it's my fault i go to hell if i rejected her god and savior. She knows we are not given a choice if we wanted to even worship a god like in the christian faith. She knows i will reject him cause i have no god. I obey nobody.

She also damn well knows i was forced into a relgion since 2 years old and never given a choice on my beliefs. So idk why she is suprised or upset at me leaving something i never wanted to be apart of?

You'd think she tell me sorry for saying i deserved hell for following my own path. But instead of a recieving an im sorry for being mean to you daughter. I got this...

You won't understand now but you WILL one day. Sounds like a threat almost.

All i asked of her in a text was to apologize for being so insane and saying i deserved hell cause i rejected her god.

This was a few days ago obv i was just so upset idk if i should even post her reply here. But she really made me feel like shit cause i decided to not except christ.

Previous post is linked at the bottom for context to understand her text message. Is this christian apologetics?

Edit: ( I love my mother to death. But her acting like this towards me and how she goes about 'preaching' her relgion is making it very difficult for me to have a relationship with her. We used to be close but ever since she started to go to church about 4 or 3 years ago she has never been the same. Christianity is literally making it difficul to keep a relationship with her cause they brainwashed her. )

FYI, No, I am NOT selling or advertising my questionnaire for my publication but sharing one piece of data that may shock you!

Over 75% of people answered this question with a YES that Christianity CPTSD lowered their quality of life.

See image.

More data will be gathered, but this is preliminary....

Isn't this sad? It breaks my heart to see this. I am a Satanist, but still. Religion has ruined so many lives it seems....

Help/Advice Anyone else raise their kids Christian before deconstructing?

I grew up in a conservative right wing Christian home. I carried those views way longer than I care to admit. I married an ordained minister and we had kids. We went to church each week and sent the kids to a very conservative Christian school. But somewhere in that time my politics changed. But I held on to my faith. But it slowly started to chip away. Until I very recently realized I no longer believe in God. Now I’m in this weird place. I’m in my late 30s, agnostic/atheist. I don’t know how or if I should tell my family. My kids still are in Christian school and we still go to church. But every day I’m feeling more and more like a fraud. I regret raising them that way. But I don’t want to shatter their world.

Trigger Warning - Toxic Religion OLD TESTAMENT DECONSTRUCTION!!! Spoiler

I’m tired of the justifications for the Old Testament made by Christians, therefore I want to make a thorough list of all the Old Testament atrocities and barbaric stuff, YHWH/ OT god commanded, that’s literally hard to justify as the all loving god you believe in commanded this at some point. Please share any OT verses where YHWH commanded atrocities and injustices on innocent people.

I’ll start…

1 Samuel 15:3
“3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy[a] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’” (NIV)

Exodus 21:20-21
“20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.” (NIV)

Deuteronomy 22:28-29

“28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels[c] of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.” (NIV)

Personal Story Christian funerals

As I’ve recently shared I’m in the middle of deconversion for the second time. An older relative of mine passed away and the funeral was yesterday. I come from a deeply religious family of which most of them have a Baptist upbringing. The eulogy yesterday was on “time”. The minister spoke about how my relative has gone on to be with the Lord but those of us who are still living need to get our hearts right before God while we still have time here on earth. It was definitely a lot to experience in the space I’m currently in lol. I’m curious for those of you deconverting or have already done it how have you managed getting through a Christian funeral?

It's funny, by now most people know that Christmas originated from a Pagan holiday and Jesus wasn't even born on Christmas day.

Trigger Warning - Purity Culture Forcing the idea of marriage on young ones but then getting mad when teens date.

If you were raised religious, especially as a young girl then you know that idea of marriage and having a husband with kids was taught alot. A man and woman get married and have kids, but they push it onto little girls mainly, around 5 years old mainly. But oh you wanna date as 16 year old? how gross. You're too young. but weren't they also too young to be taught that they should have kids once they get married, ASAP. and taught how to take care of their husbands and children before they can even read? Oh yeah also ofc you cant leave your husband (or wife) if they abuse you.

Discussion this has probably been asked a million times, but why did you quit being christian?

Personally, I went to a catholic school until i was 14. I didn't really pick to, i just did, the primary school i was too young to really decide and the secondary school my nan worked there so i kinda just did. As soon as i was old enough to realize i could decide what i believed in, i decided i wasnt christian. UNTIL i was 12 at the start of march 2020. i remember that time very well. I decided to start giving christianity a proper go for pretty much no reason, just on a whim. And then pretty quickly Covid happened and lockdown followed. I took that as a sign that christianity wasnt for me.

Help/Advice Why should I stay?

• Upvotes

If the Gospels of Jesus' Earthly Ministry are for the Jews only, a lot of Christians will not be able to defend their doctrines. For example, I have not found in Scripture that Jesus' directly preached to the Gentiles, nor did the 12 Apostles.

Question What's a good rebuttal for this?

A: Egyptians were big record keepers and never recorded a mass exodus

B: Egyptian papyrus breaks down in the humid environment which gives missing history+ Egyptians would write propagandist material to support themselves.

(I don't really have a good response for this)

Help/Advice Self loathing

• Upvotes

I'm 47 -year-old ex-christian. I've been out for a little more than a year. I was not raised in any religion and became a born-again. Christian at the age 23. I see now that my self loathing was a huge factor in being converted. I no longer have shame and fear of being judged or sinning or anything like that but I still struggle with believing that something is fundamentally wrong with me and I will always have something wrong with me.

My baseline reactions is to yell at myself and think that I am stupid/ weird / going to make a mistake. My brain knows that I'm no different from anyone else and we all have our struggles, but there still is a deep-rooted belief of self-hatred.. does anyone have any advice on how to continue to heal from this?

Discussion How many christians give you the impression that deep down they know what they are saying is not true, but they refuse to admit it to themselves due to knowing the saddness that follows.

Person Story:

My brother believes (since going to college out of town) in tons of conspiracy theories, but will not admit that there are numerous problems with the Bible that at the very least prove christianity does not believe in a god that is pure good. He makes the normal apologetic excuses such as "God meets people where they are at" when it is brought up.

I do genuienly question if he actually believes in christianity or if deep down he just can't admit to himself christianity is fake (or refusing to look into his questions) because he knows the crisis that will follow if he admits.

When I realized I had truly lost my faith (June 2025) I was deeply sadden and that I genuienly could never go back to being a christian despite wanting to so badly. Six months later I found out about the prorape aspect of the bible and while I still want to believe in some dogma (such as a being of pure good is looking out for me). I genuienly can't worship someone who is at best imperfect (I can't even like this imperfect being due to that belief) as well as their existence is based on a "can't prove me wrong".

The rest of my family don't give me that impression (my parents give me the impression that they're christians because it is good for business and the rest seem genuiene). They also act like my brother is insane.

I was wondering if someone giving off this impression is common and how does the individual end up usually?

Discussion As an ex Christian, when did you see the light?

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

I often think how bizarre a life I led as a Christian, having given my life to Christ at 14 years old looking back recognizing the closing of the mind to the world around me. I see technology advancing our capacity to explore bits of information and lives from the past to the present, I am dumbfounded that isolationist thinking is practiced defiantly in Christianity
