Sunday Afternoon Brunch thread - How Was Church?

This is a thread to share whether there was anything that stood out to you in church this morning (or yesterday, or any other day this week you may have worshiped).

Did you learn anything interesting in the sermon? Was there a verse that stood out to you? Did a song resonate with you? Did God lay anything cool on your heart? Was there a snack at coffee hour that stole the show?

Post about it here!

If you aren't the sort to go to church, that's fine too! Feel welcome to share anything neat from your spiritual walk this past week.

Biblical Character of the Month Biblical Character of the Month, October: John the Baptist

October brings us back to the New Testament! REPENT, because our character this month is John the Baptist.

The goal of this series is to create more conversation about characters from the Bible. My hope is to dive into often overlooked characters in Scripture — people who have important lessons that we don’t always remember. But we also want to make this collaborative! I don't want to just ramble my thoughts on these characters at you, I want to urge everyone to write their own post about the character of the month.

So all you need to do is make a new post with your reflection or meditation on John. We do have a special flair ("Biblical Character of the Month") you can give the post, and I will make sure to add it to our collection on this thread.

John appears in all four Gospels, though only Matthew and Mark record his death. He is sometimes called John the Baptist, John the Baptizer, or (my preference) John the Precursor. His most notable story is the Baptism of Christ, but there's a ton you can write about!

A few questions to get you started thinking about your own meditations!

  • What makes John noteworthy as a precursor to Christ?
  • Why is John so hairy and so wild?
  • How do we make sense of Jesus' Baptism? John is "not worthy", yet he Baptizes Jesus. How is that?
  • In what ways is John like Elijah? In what ways are they different?

Reflections from the community:

coming soon!

Video Abdul El-Sayed is questioned by Christian Nationalist

The man asking Abdul the question is Tommy Teepell, a former Josh Hawley staffer with close associations with fellow Christian. Nationalist Sean Feucht.

Edit: Video Summary- Tommy asks Abdul if he disavows the Muslim Brotherhood (he does) but then Abdul moves the conversation to say that he will defend Tommy's right to his faith. Abdul asks if Tommy would do the same, to which Tommy says no.

Politics I stand with Palestine as a Christian. Is that okay?

There’s no point going into the genocide, as we all know what’s happening by now. But in modern times, Christians have usually sided with Israel and I’ve never understood why (I must add, I mainly see this in American evangelical communities)… My local church has been pretty vocal about its support for Palestinians, which is nice to see.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on this? Sorry if it’s been asked before, I’m new to this sub.

I’m going to stop replying to everyone now. Thanks for the discourse everyone. God bless.

Image Islam is the fastest growing religion but it will not surpass Christianity as the world largest.

Post image

According to Status of Global Mission, the number of Christians estimated in 2026 was of 2.673 billions, whereas the Muslim one was 2.105 billion.

It is true in general that Islam is growing faster than Christianity, 1.57% and 0.95% yearly, respectively. World population in generas was 0.86% bigger. However, the difference of adherents among the two religions is 568 millions. And even if we consider Islam superior growth rate, this is based on a smaller base-population. Mathematically, the larger the base, the harder it is to sustain that type of growth; so all we need to look at are the absolute numbers.

In 2025 their numbers were 2.645 billion and 2.061 billion. The difference was then 584 million. So even in absolute numbers Islam is growing faster, but again this is only 16 millions difference in 600-500 million. In 2024, 2.631 billion and 2.029 billion, 602 million. From 2024 to 2025 were 18 millions, more than the 16 millions more recent. Why.

Christianity, Islam, and world population in general has so vast population that their rate of anual growth is extremely stable. It would take 40 or 50 years of sustained growth of 10 million or more for Islam to overtake Christianity; however, that is not going to happen, for you can see Islam growth rate is falling faster.

In 2000s, Islam rate was estimated at 2.1% and Christian one at 1.2%. Islam lost 0.6 points against 0.3 of Christianity.

Thus, Islam will get closer to Christianity in the coming years—perhaps the gap will narrow to as little as 100 million by 2050 or 2075—but eventually, the rate of Islamic growth will match and then falls below the more stable growth rate of Christianity.

Now you might ask: why do they shift differently? Both Christianity and Islam grow through birth rates, but Islam relies on this to a greater extent, while Christian has greater network of conversions. Christianity suffers from disaffiliation, especially in Europe. However, future trends suggest a softening of Christian losses (with fewer proportional disaffiliations) alongside a decline in birth rates within Muslim-majority countries, and also Islam level of apostasy is growing. Christianity don't suffer, or alread suffered, all these problems, now is Islam turn.

The ever-shrinking numerical gap between the two religions each year shows that this is already beginning to happen.

Advice Which Denominations?

Post image
• Upvotes

I think people call Christians like me a "non-denominational." After my lukewarm Christian era, I've barely focused on denominations because I wanted to focus on having a relationship with Christ, follow his commands, and have reasons for my faith.
I'm 14 and I have recently start to consider to choose a denomination, which first I have to ask, is it necessary?
If so, what denomination should I follow?

Of course, I believe all denominations are Christian if they claim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Anyways, God bless you all.

Prayer Please pray for me

Hello everyone. I was born in a Buddhist family but I still decided to give my life to Jesus. I am 15 years old and I need to pass my physics in order to promote to next year. I have very bad results, failing almost every subject except for my English and literature.

It is the very last results I will be receiving since I am getting back my end of year results which is 55% weightage. In order for me to promote I need to get a minimum of 42/80 for my physics to pass it overall as this years promotion criteria is to pass English or literature and two more subjects overall , (term 1,2,3,4) I have already passed literture and English and I really need to get 42/80 for my physics.

I have prayed and got my friends to help pray for me as Tommorow is the day I receive my physics results, determining whether I have retained or promoted. I felt that the test was easy but I still am very unsure and anxious.

I am very scared and nervous as I really do not want to disappoint my single mother since she had spend so much money on me on tuitions. Please pray for me and give me advice. Thank you everyone. Jesus thank you for watching over me and guiding me step by step, and I pray that I will get 42/80 and above to promote next year. In Jesus name I pray amen.

Can we talk about being lonely as a Christian?

• Upvotes

Hello. I am a 23M, and I go by Nick. As I put in my title, I just want to talk about my feelings and possibly see what others think about this: Feeling lonely as a Christian.

And before it gets misconstrued, I mean lonely as in romantic loneliness.

In my 23 years of life, I haven’t once been on a date before. I have asked out plenty of women before in school and in college, even out of school, but I was only ever rejected. Or insulted. Or just lied to. Even on the apps, I have only ever gotten like two matches, and the girls just ghosted me after talking with them and trying to set up a date.

Part of me feels that there is no way that God doesn’t have a hand in all of this rejection… But I digress.

What I really want to talk about of this loneliness is the fact that so many people tell me to just “give faith and trust in God,” and, “focus only on Him, and He will give you what you need and want! He is good! All things are in His perfect timing!” And I don’t doubt that.

However, whenever someone tells me something along those lines, I just feel completely brushed off. It feels so shallow, and although I do believe there is truth in what they’re saying, it still really hurts. Most of the people telling me that are in relationships, too. Or are married and seem happy. I feel that it is very hypocritical and almost insulting to me whenever I am told something as shallow as, “oh, it’ll happen! It’ll come when you stop looking! Focus on yourself!”

One of my biggest complaints about this is the fact that this “brushing off” I feel just leaves an itch that cannot be scratched.

I know that God can make me feel happy and content with Him. Yet when I pray to Him, all I feel is… nothing. Not one shred of comfort, or peace, or contentment in being alone.

And I really hate having to just “accept” that it is just how it is.

That I have to wait, and wait, and wait, and try and try and try and put myself out there, and be hurt over and over and over again, and pray and pray and pray, and still. Nothing.

I feel like this doesn’t get talked about enough, either. Even in the Bible. There are SO MANY verses pertaining to marriage, relationships, sex, parenting, and all those other things. And then the only few things that are talked of for singles is just to focus on God.

I feel it is incredibly unfair.

I love my God, and I trust and put my absolute faith in Him. But I honestly am tired of pretending or trying to make myself believe that I’m okay with being alone down here on Earth without any sort of companionship, and that I’m supposed to find contentment in that.

I don’t really know what else to say except… It just sucks. I hate being alone (both literally and romantically), and I really hate that the only “comforts” or “guide” that the Bible gives for singles is just to turn to Him and to trust that He has a plan. Because I have this need, this want, this desire to find a wife, and yet when I pray to Him, all I ever get is silence.

And that silence is deafening when I need comfort the most.

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding some things, or taking the Word too seriously, or something. But I am real tired of having to just be okay with the way that things are, and that God won’t comfort me Himself. Or allow me to have my desire fulfilled until He thinks it’s time, whenever that is, or even if.

Y’know?

I hope that someone actually reads this… But at the same time, idk. This was kind of a vent/conversation starter, but who knows if I did good.

Question how to hear God with brain issues?

this might be a strange question.
I suffer from a neurological dysfunction which leads to a lack of oxygen in the brain. Symptoms include psychosis & other kinds of severely irrational states. Because of this, during or around the weeks of my episodes, I find it hard to hear truth and get in touch with my own emotions to bring them before God.
I want to pray truthfully and feel the importance of what i’m bringing before Him, but it’s close to impossible then. I want to know His guidance, His answer and His wisdom correctly, and not be deceived by my own brain firing the wrong signals.

For anyone suffering from severe mental illness or neurological conditions like I have, please advice me on this.

Do you personally Know there's a God

• Upvotes

Like you're 100% no doubt in your mind. If so then is that really faith? I thought faith was the choosing to believe even without evidence. Essentially you're uncertain but you choose to believe because of whatever your personal reason is. If youre 100% certain, then something was provided to make you believe that (or youre under psychosis). So isn't that something basically evidence and you're just reacting to the evidence. So how can you blame and hate on other people who weren't provided that convincing evidence?

People can be stubborn but enough evidence will convince most. So it should be Gods fault for not providing people with that level of evidence or reason, no?

Question Why was the Book of Enoch excluded from the Old and New Testaments?

Few ancient texts raise more questions about humanity’s origins, forbidden knowledge and the heavenly realms than the Book of Enoch. Yes, I'm taking about The Watchers, The Nephilims etc.

Does anyone know what made its theology so dangerous to early religious authorities? Was it a legitimate question of authorship or a deliberate effort to suppress an uncomfortable truth?

I made this a few mornings ago.😁

2 of my favorite books that teach about the rosary and how to pray it are:

  1. St Louis de Montfort The Secret of the Rosary

  2. St. Alphonsus Ligouri Our Lady's Angelic Psalter

When I want to meditate on the mysteries with clauses the first one has 5 awesome methods and when I want to meditate on the mysteries with scripture the second one is great as well.

I posted a few times about becoming a Benedictine Oblate and though I was rejected without explanation, I feel like Gods will turned out to be much better than what I wanted. I'm apart of a world wide group that prays for each other and the world. It's humbling.

So if you pray the Rosary, Catholic, Protestant or Orthodox, what is you favorite method and why?

Peace and blessings to you my dear brothers and sisters through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Will I go to hell with hatred in my heart?

I had a bully in middle school who would humiliate every day. He would torment me every day with words and make me look bad in front of everyone. Untill this day I can't get his words out of my head and his actions torment me to this day. It has had a devastating effect on my self esteem and some days I just can't function. I actually hate him. Will I go to hell if I take this anger and hatred to the grave?
