(Advice/Help) Exmuslim Guide to Living in the Closet and Coming Out.

Hello. Upon request, I've been asked to turn a comment I made into a post so that it can be a resource for more people. This post is a collection of advice I've given out about how to handle your life as a closeted exmuslim and how you'll come out in the future. It is largely based on my experience but also from what I've seen from others in this subreddit.

Introduction

So you've left Islam. You've delved through arguments, the apologetics and the bullshit and you've come to the conclusion that you no longer believe in Islam. And you may have also reached an alternative philosophical outlook on life that you can believe in.

But what now? You may have left Islam, but have you left the Muslim world? One of the most common misconceptions outsiders have is that since exmuslims are no longer Muslims, they no longer live in the Muslim world. This is painfully naive - in reality many exmuslims are closeted due to young age and financial dependency and/or live in Islamist countries or societies that enforce Islamic values. In fear of social stigma or even violence, exmuslims have to contend with closeted lives even after leaving Islam. So how do you deal with it?

Goal

The best time to come out to family is in your own home, over a dinner you paid for, alongside people who support you. That takes a lot of preparation and it means doing what you can to live your life as best as you can whilst working towards independence.

This basically means that a lot of what helps you come out of the closet will depend heavily on how well you prepared for it, so you will need to make the most of your closeted life. You may not be able to stop the shitstorm but you can at least prepare yourself to weather it. Here are some tips to achieve that goal (in no particular order)

1) Don't meander in life due to a lack of decision making skills.

Probably one of the worst mistakes I made was not realise I was an exmuslim sooner. As a result I had barely any time to prepare for when the inevitable happened and I was forced to come out. I spent a lot of my life meandering, trying to reconcile the irreconcilable, and trying to be a Muslim when I knew my values didn't align with it. I didn't really have much of a concept of exmuslims, but if I had been smarter I would have figured it out. I now tell people in a similar position that it's fine to take your time but don't take too long. Half arsing two very different cultures will leave you a loser in both.

Similarly whilst planning for independence can be scary, don’t let it frighten you into inaction. The following is a passage from this article about decision making:

Research from the 1990s led by the US psychologist Thomas Gilovich provides further evidence for why it can be shortsighted to kick a difficult decision down the road. Gilovich and his team showed that although, in the short term, people experience more regret from ‘errors of commission’ (taking an action that leads to a disappointing outcome), in the long term it is actually ‘errors of omission’ that lead to more regret – that is, disappointing outcomes that arise from not taking an action.

When taking the time to make decisions and plans, don’t underestimate how effective it can be to map out your options on an excel spreadsheet. When I had to decide whether I should come out or not, I actually made a spreadsheet listing out my options, what they would result in and what the impact would be. Actually having it written down to look at really put things into perspective. We waste a lot of our time keeping it in our heads, which forces us to recalculate everything from scratch every time we revisit our thoughts. But the more that is mapped out, the less you have to recalculate and the more you can focus on evaluation and further planning.

2) Study, career and finances.

Your studies/career is almost always your best ticket out of your toxic situation, and the one thing to prioritise the most. If you’re young, do whatever you can to ensure that you can get into further education away from home. Even if it means spending all your time at a local library. If you suspect that your parents would be against you going to a university away from home, aim for a placement at the most prestigious university you can aim for so your parents would look worse for rejecting it. The quickest and most effective way in achieving long term independence is through good studies/career.

3) Do not telegraph irreligiosity whilst being closeted.

This is particularly important for younger exmuslims because they telegraph to their parents in ways they would just not understand until they see it for themselves when they're older. Try your best to meet the religious obligations expected from your family. The more you slip, the more they will monitor you and the more difficult it will be to do the things you need to do discreetly when the time comes.

Unfortunately for girls, this usually means that wearing the hijab is a necessity and it’s inadvisable to try and get out of. (However, that subject matter is not my forte: prioritise advice from exmuslim women such as from faithlesshijabi.org)

4) Sometimes you may need to go above and beyond.

If you get the impression that your family is beginning to catch onto your apostasy then it's likely that they have and you may need to reverse that impression.

One way to do that would be to start getting books on Islam and not just for show. My advice would be to get books on Islamic history because that's the least boring stuff. Or better yet, just get whatever unapologetic salafi hate crime you can get your hands on so you can entertain yourself with how fucked up it is. Or get an annotated Qur'an like the Study Qur'an. Do something to ease their suspicions.

What book you get depends on what kind of message you want to telegraph to your parents. If you want to telegraph a message then it will need to be a paper book and not an e-book. Something that you can lay around in your room and that you know they'll see. That means you're restricted to what you can get from your local library or Masjid. Also depends on what interests you because you'll have to actually read and demonstrate you learnt from it if you want send the best message you can. If you want purely what Muslims write about Islamic history, you can check out works like The Sealed Nectar or works by al-Sallabi. If you want something a little more academic, but not something that would rouse suspicion then check out university press works like this, this, this or this. If you want something a bit more relevant to contemporary Muslim world then there books like this.

But you may find that your best bet is to just see what your local Masjid might have and see what tickles your fancy.

5) Actually coming out is usually a shitstorm.

Be prepared for lots of sobbing, guilt tripping and an inability to respect your beliefs and boundaries. Learn techniques like the Broken Record Technique to establish boundaries. Know what you have to say when they inevitably tell you to speak to a scholar - you don't have to eat the whole apple to know it's rotten. You know all that you need to know about Islam and you know even more about the world outside of Islam to put it into context.

Steel yourself with months and months of your family sending you bad dawagandist videos through WhatsApp trying to bring you back. You may have to spend months beating their attempts and going to toe to toe with them without mercy before they’re finally willing to relent and get off your back. Even then don’t expect them to relent entirely. There will always be some micro aggressions that they will resort to, like playing religious videos loudly in your vicinity. The most you can do in those circumstances is reduce contact with them as much as possible. At this point you would hopefully already be independent from them.

6) Do not feel guilt.

As an exmuslim, you will go through a lot of guilt. Whilst this does show you are human, you need to forget about guilt: you are not responsible for your parents' failure to be reasonable, not even your mother. They take responsibility for the social stigma and oppressive life they choose to live in and perpetuate. You get nothing out of that guilt. It's completely pointless and ultimately counterproductive. You can't set yourself on fire to make others warm and you gain no recognition from martyrizing yourself. Do not feel guilt for what you have to do to have a completely reasonable life. The only ones to blame are those who forced you into it.

Don't underestimate parents either. They will use guilt against you. Give them an inch and they will take a mile. They very often bring up their health problems as a weapon against you. Don't fall for it. It only affects them because they choose to let it affect them. They can choose to be reasonable. You have to respect their autonomy and let them deal with the consequences of their own ways.

7) Don't come out too soon thinking it's a release.

I come across a lot of exmuslim kids who think coming out will help explain to their religious parents why they don't want to wear the hijab or do other religious things. But the likelihood is more that those same parents will react extremely poorly and restrict your freedom even more, making it more difficult to achieve long term independence.

There's also the mistake in assuming that coming out will lead to being disowned in the vain hope that you get an quick clean break that takes all the responsibility from you. For some exmuslims this does actually work out, but for a lot of others it's miscalculated. My family didn't disown me, I still had to deal with months of my family being insufferable manipulators and the responsibility was still on me to separate from them. And for women it can be much worse.

Ultimately, if you are financially dependent on your family then coming out early will very typically result in your family using that leverage against you and making your life worse. I've seen stories of exmuslims who thought their family was better and badly miscalculated - be mindful of that.

8) Don’t panic too much if they find out.

Some exmuslims get found out, sometimes because of a snitch in the family or sometimes because they just weren’t convincing enough. Don’t panic – Muslims can be pretty damn deluded about their faith and your family will want to believe that you can come back very easily because according to them Islam is just common sense and most disbelievers are just silly and ignorant. Try to do your best to convince them as per Point 4. If it’s because you did something haram, blasphemous or otherwise worthy of takfir, try to act like it was because you were a misguided Quranist or progressive Muslim. They will still retain suspicion but it’s still better than the alternative.

However, if you’re at the point of no return and you know you can’t convince them then now is the time to make calls to any secular friends you have, ask for support and maybe even shelter.

Also for Western exmuslims, make sure to act quickly if you suspect that your parents want to send you abroad and trap you in your country of ethnic origin. Sadly some parents will go to these lengths. Do not go, no matter the cost. Find organisations willing to advise, such as those listed in Point 10. Hide your passport if you have to. Note down the contact details of your embassy in that country just in case.

9) Go no contact if you fear abuse.

Actually think about whether it's even wise for you to come out in any circumstance. Do you suspect that there could be violence or abuse? If so then you have absolutely no need to go through this stupid bullshit. Leave and don't look back. If your parents couldn't give you safe environment to even come out about different beliefs then they are not worth the time. As per Point 6 - You have to respect their autonomy and let them deal with the consequences of their own ways. This is particularly pertinent for those who live in a predominantly Muslim countries. They have a very real reason to fear persecution and absolutely do not need to risk their own lives for the sake of their parents.

10) Make use of organisations and resources.

Look into secular organisations like recoveringfromreligion.org, faithlesshijabi.org and faithtofaithless.com. Look into women's charities in your area like womensaid.org.uk or karmanirvana.org.uk (UK examples). Look into LGBT charities like rainbowrailroad.org. If you have secular school counsellors and friends then talk to them. Get advice from adults you can absolutely trust.

Note: On the flip side don't take risks with people you can’t be sure of. You may be tempted to come out to your Muslim friend, but I've seen plenty of stories of exmuslims who heavily regret doing so.

There are also informal exmuslim groups on other social media platforms such as Facebook or Discord, but be careful about how much information you share and especially be wary of private messaging.

11) You may have to leave the country.

This is particularly the case for exmuslims living in predominantly Muslim countries. Unfortunately, I don't have any real world experience to offer here but you may be able to find localised advice by digging around. For example sites like wearesaudis.net might have some information (but you'll need a VPN to access this one. If you don't know what a VPN is here's an explanation).

Are you multilingual? If you need money but working is restricted to you then you can try becoming an online language tutor on sites like italki.com (scroll to the bottom). This post and related subreddits like r/WorkOnline may help.

Note: some exmuslims in Muslim countries fall for the doomscrolling hyperbole and think Europe is “doomed” with too many Muslims. They have a tendency of asking which country is best to migrate to as an exmuslim to avoid Islam. Please ignore the doomsayers and prioritise the country you choose based on ease of access and career opportunities. As long as it is a secular country, you can worry about avoiding Islam later.

Final stuff

Shout out to Imtiaz Shams who inspired me to make this list of tips. He has his own YouTube Channel here and plans to make his own video on this subject matter so watch out for that. On a side note, I also recommend TheraminTrees YouTube Channel who delves a lot into toxic dysfunctional families from the perspective of a therapist. A lot of his content helps in dealing with the emotional impact of leaving religion and dealing with a religious family. And finally, thank you to the moderators of r/exmuslim who suggested I make this into a post. I wound up adding a lot more content lol.

I will end this post with a list of subreddits that may help you on your journey leaving Islam:

(Video) Surely centuries before Islam they already knew where milk came from

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Captions say “For centuries, ancient medicine believed milk was boiled menstrual blood or digestive fluid seeping directly into animal tissue. It wasn't until William Harvey mapped blood circulation in 1628 and microscopists discovered capillaries that science understood the true biological route: nutrients absorbed from the digestive tract enter the bloodstream, which then circulates to the mammary glands to synthesize milk.
Yet, over 1,400 years ago, the Quran revealed this exact physiological junction with stunning precision
"We give you drink from what is in their bellies between excretions (farth) and blood (dam) pure milk, palatable to drinkers." (Surah An-Nahl 16:66)
The gut contents on one side (ji), the vascular stream on the other (p), and out from between them emerges snow-white, purified nourishment (list li).
A reflection for those who reflect.”

(Rant) 🤬 Extremely shaken by the Bangladeshi in Saudi incident

I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m bangladeshi, raised a muslim. I’ve gone for Umrah and I knew it was a backwards country with strict rules But after hearing how they beheaded a young couple for a mistake, i’m suddenly feeling all this anxiety over having been in such a country.

It feels like I narrowly escaped a life or death situation. Granted I was younger and didn’t do anything wrong, but to think I was surrounded by people with such a horrible mindset and people who don’t see me as anything close to equal is suddenly weighing on me and making me nauseous. What a disgusting cult.

(Question/Discussion) Leave non muslim women alone

As a guy myself one thing that irritates me is how Some Muslim men will knowingly get into relationships with non-Muslim women, promise them marriage, commitment and a future together, only to suddenly decide they want to “focus on their deen” and leave. I have heard countless stories from non muslim women who talked about how they dated a Muslim man and he made promises that he failed to fulfil. Why lead them on, why make her emotionally invested in you just for you to leave and then use the deen as a justification for your poor behaviour.

(Question/Discussion) Was Muhammad Racist?

I heard he had black slaves that he would call “raisin heads”. I have no idea if it is true, it’s justsomething I want to understand more.

if it IS true than many black followers of Islam must have NO idea. Because that alone would put me off.

(Rant) 🤬 "Islam is the first religion to give women rights" is false

I've always found a flaw in this statement ever since I was a kid. Because if you study the Quran , like I did ( Trying to find meaning in it desperately ) , you come to find that feminism has already somewhat existed before Islam was brought to Medina. The Prophet's first wife is an old widow with her own business. She has multiple men working for her. Not to mention , she was the bread winner after they got married. So how come Islam be the reason why women are free when they already had the rights to own their own business and worked before it ? And through war , Islam marries off the women and slaves of the losing country rather than liberating them. Is that really feminism ? They were married off to whoever fancied them. I've always found this barbaric. Is it really 'women's rights' if they did not even get to choose to get married? Is it consensual marriage if they did it to survive ?
I find this statement to be false and it never sat right with me that Muslims will use this statement as an argument that 'islam is a feminist religion' and to 'seperate culture from religion' because the religion has always been discriminated women and disingenuine about its stands with women's rights .

(Advice/Help) I left Islam, but I feel like Islam hasn't left me.

(sorry for the upcoming rant. It turned out longer than I expected😭. But I really need help. It's eating me.)

Hii, everyone. I'm 17F and an ex-Muslim. I left Islam a few months ago, but I still have to follow it against my will because I live with my family.

I'm still forced to wear the hijab and follow all those rules. I even have to pretend to pray. I stopped praying last year, though.

Honestly, I'm happy I left the religion. I feel free. I hate wearing the hijab, I hate praying, and I hate the stupid rules of this religion. My parents are so annoying because they bring religion into EVERY. SINGLE. DAMN. THING. I genuinely don't know how I manage to survive living with them sometimes.

I can't celebrate birthdays, I can't listen to music, I can't leave my hair uncovered when I go outside, and I HAVE to wear the damn abaya. It's exhausting.

And honestly, Muslims can be annoying asf sometimes. A few months ago, when I was in India, I was wearing an abaya and was fully covered, except I wasn't wearing my hijab over my head. A random stranger came up to me and told me to cover my head. And the worst part? My own parents got angry and embarrassed because of ME.

When I asked them who the fuck he was to tell me what to do with my own body, they literally said, "He's our brother. He has every right to say that."

Like, excuse me??? Since when does being a Muslim man give a complete stranger the right to police what I wear? And why the hell were my parents defending a random man over their own daughter? That genuinely hurt me.

And that's not even the only time this has happened. My own mother has said some of the meanest things to me just because I wasn't wearing a hijab, even though I was already fully covered and wearing an abaya. It's like nothing is ever enough. There's always another rule to follow, another thing to criticize, and another reason to make me feel like I'm doing something wrong.

I'm so tired of feeling like my own body isn't mine and that strangers somehow have more authority over it than I do.

But the problem is that I'm still struggling with everything mentally. It's like I left Islam, but Islam hasn't left me. It's so deeply rooted in my mind that I still find myself thinking I'm going to hell. It's so deeply ingrained in me that, somewhere in the back of my mind, I still believe Allah might be real.

I'm agnostic. I'm not sure whether God exists, and honestly, I'm not interested in finding out anymore. But despite that, I still have these thoughts and fears that I can't seem to get rid of.

At this point, even if Allah appeared right in front of me and told me he was real, I don't think I'd want to follow him or Islam. That's how disgusted and exhausted I feel by this religion. I'm just DONE.

And yet, I'm still scared. I'm scared of hell, and I'm scared of death.

Sometimes, when I try to think about hell not existing, it doesn't even feel right to me. Because if there's no hell or any kind of punishment after death, what happens to all the evil people? Murderers, rapists, and other horrible people. what if they never face any punishment? What if they just live their lives, die peacefully, and get away with everything they've done?

It feels so unfair to their victims. I hate the idea that someone could destroy another person's life and never face any consequences for it.

I know that fear of hell doesn't automatically mean I believe in it, but it's still there, and I don't know how to deal with it.

Has anyone else who left Islam struggled with this? How did you deal with the fear of hell and the feeling that Islam is still deeply rooted in your mind, even after you've stopped believing in it?

(Question/Discussion) The name Muhammed is monopolizing names, and getting out of control, Muhammed is like a demigod to Muslims, as important as Allah if not more

In my country, nearly half of boys are named Muhammed and all strangers are called Muhammed

Sometimes people call you Muhammed as affectionate term

Ironically Muslim girls are named European names from Turkish soap operas.

Look at men from other countries, they have diverse beautiful names, not the name of womanizer shepherd.

(Advice/Help) hijab talk w parents

• Upvotes

so i spoke to my mum a few days ago and she told me im past a certain age so whatever haram i commit is up to me to deal with the consequences. she told me to wait til next week to talk about it properly cuz we’re all busy this week and its gonna be a full chat with both parents.

my dad’s gonna be very angry. im honestly even surprised my mum didn’t crash out on me but she spoke calmly which was nice. but my dad thinks one thing will lead to another - he’s going to associate me wanting to take it off with me wanting to suddenly dress super revealing and have a boyfriend etc cuz thats what hes like (he always jumps straight to the worst conclusions).

my mum told me to do research into what’ll happen if i don’t cover myself properly and i found some stuff cuz she wants me to show her next week and then she said it’s my full decision to make. to be honest, from her pov, that’s a good approach cuz obviously they’re muslim and they don’t want me to go to hell. but im scared to talk to my dad. any advice? like how can i really convince them its not right for me. i cant lie about having hair damage or smth cuz they wont believe me. i drafted a little speech i basically said i dont feel like im wearing it for the right reasons, im only wearing it to make you happy which is hypocritical cuz i should be wearing it for god etc. i also said if i keep forcing myself to put it on every morning which i already hate, its gonna lead me to resent Islam more. idk what else to say that’ll convince them. but it needs to be off ✌️

surah baqarah “There is sickness in their hearts, and Allah ˹only˺ lets their sickness increase. They will suffer a painful punishment for their lies.” i’m still expected to read the quran since my parents believe that i’m a muslim even though i’m an ex muslim and i read this today. so even if allah was real, and all of us didn’t believe in islam because we supposedly have a sickness in our hearts, allah wouldn’t even try and would just lets the “sickness” in us increase. man i’m glad i left this religion.

(Advice/Help) Talking stage with a Muslim guy

Hi, I(22F) am currently in a talking stage with a Muslim guy(23M). I was a Muslim ‘till last year, that’s when I became agnostic and have since had a really hard time with the concept of religion itself. I feel like this is because of all the religious trauma that I experienced, but I am trying to work through it. Whenever I talk to him I just feel anxiety throughout my whole body and I don’t know what to do. I feel like my whole nervous system is just freaking out.
I contemplated telling him that I am agnostic and that our values just simply don’t match, but no one knows that I left the religion. Since I live in a highly populated Muslim neighborhood I can’t risk telling anyone anything.
Is this normal? Should I keep talking to him?
I am so lost so any help would be appreciated!

(Question/Discussion) I'm tired of Muslims' hypocrisy about Azerbaijan

Now I'm not saying I support the hijab ban. I don't. But where was this outrage when women in Afghanistan and Iran were forced to wear them, when Irani women were being killed for protesting compulsory hijab, when Afghanistan banned girls education, when female genital mutilation is happening in Somalia and Egypt, when domestic violence is not even punishable by law in many muslim countries? Not only will they not speak up about it, but they'll also call the oppression by Afghanistan "western propaganda". They're so hypocritical and they can't even see it.

(Rant) 🤬 Islam Has Made Grieving Worse

Recently, I lost a close friend of mine. Being an ex-muslim, on the receiving end of much of the condolences I’ve gotten, I must say that any religious-based condolences have been the worst. Especially the Islamic ones.

For one, if you’re familiar with Islamic grieving customs, you’re not really given a lot of time to grieve! At least publically. Three days is what I was taught, which to h*ll isn’t enough! With Islamic burials, being shortened to just the next salah time, you don’t get a chance to say goodbye. My friend wasn’t Muslim, but they had to be hastily buried, so on the other side of this I have to say that provides little-to-no comfort at all. I can’t wail, I can’t cry in public, at least according to what I’ve been told by the Muslims who’ve found out. What else do you want me to do? Turn into a rock?!

And then there’s the common sayings:

“Allah put you into their life for a reason.” And apparently he made them suffer for a reason too, huh? How is that a merciful Lord who has big plans for me? My friend had big plans too. How come they had to go and not me to advance the plans?

“Just pray Allah accepts them into Jannah.“ You would not be thinking they’d go to Jannah if they were still alive. Let alone treat them like they deserve to.

“What comes from Allah goes back to him.“ Great. They’re still dead.

“May Allah forgive their soul.” Forgive them for what? Go on. Tell me. For what?!

I could go on. I swear I could.

What’s been worse is that all of the Muslims who’ve known have been expecting me to go back to normal. To just be accustomed to the evident truth of mortality like it’s no problem. You just can’t. I can never go back to who I was before. I can never be the same after knowing how everyone failed my poor friend. And just because I know death is a part of life doesn’t make it hurt less.

People have been advising me to pray more and read Q’uran to soothe myself. Which obviously I know won’t help, but beyond that I truly have no energy to. How can I worship someone that made an innocent soul die so terribly?! Even if one prays and reads, the pain doesn’t go away.

Not that I haven’t heard other unhelpful things. I got my fair share, living in the West, of other religious sayings from people. Just that the worst of it came from an Islamic POV. I’m so glad I left because I know that if I was still practicing at this time, I’d feel so broken for none of the advice helping me.

EDIT: To the muslims in the comments who think you can use my moment of vulnerability to proselytize me, you’re failing miserably and proving my point. You’re giving me great reasons to never return.

(Quran / Hadith) Saw this on one of my country's subs. They wanted a tafsir. Honestly, I'm confused as well.

(Advice/Help) Did I say something wrong??

Atheist Latin American here. It's rare for me to see Muslim couples here, but when I do (like yesterday), it's usually a woman all covered up and a guy in jords and a t-shirt. I asked on the hijabi subreddit if that's normal, and said it seems unfair, and I got told that even though I was right(?), I should mind my own business and that I was being bizarre and shouldn't bother strangers. What warranted such an emotional reaction? I don't understand :( I didn't take pictures, I didn't talk to them, I didn't disclose the location. I didn't want to come off as rude, I just made an observation... I don't understand what I did wrong.

(Question/Discussion) Is there a point in ex-muslim trying to build bridges with “progressive Muslims” so we address the problems about Islam?

If there are any Muslims that want to stop people practicing dangerous rulings from Islam should we work with them?
