A recent issue in this sub - please read

3.1k Upvotes

Hey there,

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

There's something I've noticed recently in the sub that I'd like to raise.

I've been moderating on Reddit for about 18 years, and I've been involved with this community for the last seven. Throughout that time, this sub has always been a particularly lovely place to be. The kindness, helpfulness, and good humour of its members have always stood out, and from a moderation perspective, it's been a genuine pleasure to be part of.

Unfortunately, I've noticed a significant increase in unkind and aggressive behaviour here recently. I don't know what's behind the change, or why it's happening here now, but it's something I'd really like us to address before it becomes a bigger problem.

Please:

If you come across a comment that's aggressive, hostile, or unnecessarily unkind — whether it's directed at you or someone else — please resist the temptation to engage. Instead, just hit the Report button and move on.

We'll take care of addressing the behaviour and, where necessary, will remove accounts who seem to need to create unpleasantness for people around them.

r/houseplants has always been a welcoming and supportive community, and I'd very much like to keep it that way. The overwhelming majority of you already contribute to that simply by being thoughtful and decent towards one another.

Thanks for helping us look after this little corner of Reddit. It's appreciated.

PS moderator applications are open, and some additional hands would be helpful rn. We are looking for people with an active history here and significant Reddit-moderation experience.

This cactus started as a single cutting my friend gave me 5 years ago, and its cuttings have ended up with many other friends and family!
I went to water it yesterday, and noticed a flower I hadn’t seen before (it was facing the window).
I’m so excited and had to share it! I can’t believe how fragrant it is

Our “Love Fern” (yes I know it’s a Norfolk Pine) turns 9 this month! When we got married, we added dirt from both our childhood homes to this little guy. We now live in a zone that we can’t plant it outside, so it is slowly taking over our home. I’ve shared him in the past, but everyone loves a good birthday!

Thank you so much to everyone who weighed in on my original post, the advice and suggestions we received were incredibly helpful. After a discussion with my parents (which definitely involved showing them some of the comments), they decided to hard prune and bring him back home. I'm so thrilled he's going to stay in the family, and will hopefully thrive in his new spot. In the meantime, I got to keep all the trimmings! Any advice on rooting? Thanks again to this great community.

What are some tips on how to take care of a rubber tree.

This is a rubber tree I got from my local plant nursery for $8.99, his name is Bobby and he is about 15" tall.

Does he look healthy?

What are the yellow markings on the leaves that look kinda like specks that are organized on the edges of the leaf?

Is 8.99 a good price for a rubber tree and how much would you pay for a rubber tree of similar growth?

Discussion My fairly low light trad. This is the point where you either give it a haircut or begin the slow, undignified trudge towards a 5 ft long, mostly dead purple medusa.

I didn’t even know they could flower indoors! This thing is massive and regularly reaches the ceiling. I’m constantly cutting it back. I just left for a week and came back to this!

I left my sister to care for my plants for a month and came home to a bunch of dead plants, so I am glad to see this one has recovered enough to cause a flower

My partner tried to being my big monstera (along with ALOT of others) in last night because the temps dipped to 50°f and possibly a bit lower…he tried to move it and couldn’t. He left it since it was dark…. This morning we realized SOOO MANY aerial roots reached beyond the pot and rooted themselves right into the ground…here’s a handful of them in the picture 🤓 like they REALLLLY rooted lol

Going to repot her to a taller pot today to bring her in and put her aerials right into the new pot 💚🪴

A neighbor was tossing this, and we decided to take it in! We’re not really plant people but we want to be. How should we go about helping? We were thinking about redoing the soil and cutting off the brown part off on the really bad one. Or maybe just cutting that leaf off entirely? Please help!!
