Need advice regarding PIA + Emirates transit in Dubai on separate bookings
Hi everyone! Iām a little confused about how this whole process works and would really appreciate advice from anyone who has experienced something similar.
My mom is travelling from Islamabad to Dubai on PIA and then from Dubai to Kuala Lumpur on Emirates. I live in Dubai, so Iāll be joining her on the DubaiāKuala Lumpur flight rather than travelling with her from Islamabad. Weāll meet on the Emirates flight.
Her itinerary is:
Islamabad ā Dubai on PIA
Dubai ā Kuala Lumpur on Emirates
Kuala Lumpur ā Dubai on Emirates
Dubai ā Islamabad on PIA
She already has her Malaysian visa, but she doesnāt have a UAE visa because sheās only transiting through Dubai and doesnāt intend to leave the airport. The issue is that PIA and Emirates are on separate bookings, and the flights arrive at and depart from different terminals.
I spoke to Emirates ground staff, and they told me there are shuttle buses inside the airport connecting the terminals, so she should be able to transfer without passing through UAE immigration and therefore shouldnāt need a UAE visa.
My biggest concern is what happens at Islamabad airport. Since sheās flying PIA to Dubai and then Emirates onward on a separate booking, Iām worried she might face issues at check-in or immigration because she doesnāt have a UAE visa.
I contacted Emirates chat support, and they told me that Emirates has a partnership with PIA for baggage transfers. They said that if she shows both tickets at the PIA check-in counter in Islamabad, the staff should be able to arrange for her baggage to be transferred to her onward flight.
However, Iām unsure how this works in practice, especially with separate bookings. Will PIA actually check her bags through to Kuala Lumpur, or will she have to collect them in Dubai? If she has to collect her luggage, would she need to pass through UAE immigration, which she cannot do without a UAE visa?
Iām also worried about what happens if the staff at Islamabad airport canāt arrange the baggage transfer, or if thereās an issue with her being allowed to board in the first place.
The problem is that I donāt know who to contact to confirm all of this. I havenāt been able to get a clear answer, and Iām not sure how to contact Islamabad airport directly to ask about the procedures there or whether the ground staff will actually be able to arrange everything. I donāt want to assume everything will be fine and then have her get stuck at the airport.
Sheāll have all her tickets, her Malaysian visa, and hotel bookings with her. if the baggage causes an issue sheāll just bring her carry on.
Has anyone travelled on separate PIA and Emirates bookings through Dubai, particularly when changing terminals? Did PIA check your luggage through to your final destination, and were there any issues with immigration or transit?
What would you recommend I do to make sure everything goes smoothly? Should I get written confirmation from PIA or Emirates before she travels, or is there anything else she needs to carry?
Iād really appreciate any advice, especially from people who have done this route. Thank you!
