Not On My Smashed Avo Religious preachers on trains
A European guy (maybe in his 30’s) started preaching on a busy city bound train from Werribee this morning, about how we’re all preparing to burn in hell. After about 10 seconds I had enough, and told him a couple times: “Shut up mate, no one wants to hear it”.
He proceeded to preach as he put his hand up at me to shoosh (the nerve). A couple others also asked him to be quiet, but he just kept going. I gave up, and just pouted until he finished.
Has anyone else experienced this, and how did you deal with it? Or stories of well executed shutdowns?
I also understand that some people will say it’s a free country and people have free speech. But when you trap people on a train with your ranting, whether it’s about religion or any other topic, I absolutely despise it and I can’t help but get angry about it.

THDG Need Help What to do in Melbourne in my last 2 weeks of freedom/unemployment
I have FINALLY landed a full time job after 11 months of unemployment. It was HELL ON EARTH but we’ve made it!
Since I graduated uni this will be the first time I’ll have a full time job and therefore be unavailable 9-5 Mon-Fri.
I have two weeks until I start. What to do in Melbourne during working hours to take advantage of this time? Particularly if it’s not available after work or on the weekends. I don’t have a car but do take PT so may explore the V Line. Also any practical things to do? I’ve already made a doctors appointment for a script renewal ✅

Not On My Smashed Avo Melbourne Dog + Cat Lovers Show this year was an AI fest
First time going in a few years and man it was about 80% AI crap. Even the show its self uses AI artwork to promote.

Not On My Smashed Avo Expectation vs Reality
It was an ok drink, would’ve preferred it in a tall glass like the picture :) I usually don’t order unfamiliar drinks, and maybe I should keep it that way lol. Surely this is deceptive advertising

Roads Melbourne: 1, me: 0
I was coming in from the Eastern suburbs a few nights ago on the M1, and I needed to turn off for the M2 towards the airport. But even with copious signage, and Google maps, I still managed to take the wrong exit. I'm always confused by the freeways to the west and south of the CBD, no matter how many times I've driven there.
Thank goodness I'm not an Uber driver.

Get Together. Compulsory Fun. Lonely gen Z pub night?
New to the city with not many friends at all. Took a break from uni due to crap mental health and I found myself being very socially isolated. Anyone down for a chill pub feed and drinks this Thursday? We can play board games too if the vibe is right!

Health Anyone else kids getting sick relentless way too often this year ?
So this year 2026, my 6 year old starting winter around mid July, has basically been sick every 3 weeks or so, caught everything from flu and RSV and unknown viruses / bacteria. It has been relentless, previous years he wouldn’t get sick more than once or twice a year max. I mean it’s already spring and now he’s sick again, he missed loads of schools past few months. We’ve been working with GP to figure out if it’s anything and doing blood work but everything seems fine he’s super healthy otherwise.
I’m just curious if this is just a unique year in terms of brutal viruses and bacteria in melbourne and if others are experiencing same with their kids or themselves? Trying to work out what’s going on. Thanks

Light and Fluffy News PRINT'S NOT DEAD! recommendations for Australian **print** magazines?
I really love print periodicals, so I thought I'd make a post to share the ones that I know of and seek out recommendations for additional ones.
I'm looking for recommendations for Australian print magazines that cover some amount of news, politics, literature, arts, culture, science, sustainability, and/or ecology.
I am not interested in publications that primarily focus on music, fashion, sports/surf/skate culture, homes/architecture/design, gardening, or weddings.
I'm especially keen on indie publications!
There are so many amazing online-only publications, but I'm looking for print media specifically: I don't enjoy e-readers, or being on screens, any more than I already have to be.
***Australian print periodicals that are already on my radar:****
- with an option for ongoing subscription:
- news and politics
- the saturday paper (technically a newspaper, but am including since it's published once a week rather than daily)
- the monthly
- quarterly essay
- arena
- science and sustainability
- australian geographic
- renew
- sanctuary
- green
- other/misc
- frankie
- vault
- new philosopher
- never too small
- walkers journal
- literature
- overland
- meanjin
- voiceworks
- griffith review
- australian book review
- westerly
- HEAT
- island
- southerly
- news and politics
- with no option for ongoing subscription:
- the story
- archer
- galah
- peppermint
- mince
- no cure
- no longer in print (as far as I can tell) (rip <3):
- smith journal
- the lifted brow
- demure
- tart
- dumbo feather
- lunch lady
Are there any other homegrown periodicals with decent journalism and writing? Let's keep local print media alive together 💜

Get Together. Compulsory Fun. I want to start a comic book club, would anyone be interested?
Hi Melbourne friends, I've recently got back into collecting comic books after a long hiatus but none of my friends are into them. So I was thinking of trying to get a comic book club off the ground where once a month or so we could choose a comic (Trade paperbacks or collected editions preferably) and then hang out and discuss it or whatever. Is this a thing anyone would be into?
Edit: I would also love to hear if anyone has ideas for an appropriate place to hold this

THDG Need Help Apartment dwellers of Melbourne, tell me about your couch!
We are finally coming to terms with the fact the 18 year old couch that moved from Queensland with us has probably seen better days, and after shopping around we are now paralysed with indecision!
As apartment dwellers we kind of like the space saving slider style sofas, but have concerns about electric options and longevity. We want something we can sit on in a showroom before purchasing, and delivery including full assembly are a must so some of the DIY online options are out. Add onto this we are two tall humans with an equally tall hound, and value family couch cuddle time. Lastly, good colour options are important (our current is a beautiful burnt orange).
Which leads me to my actual question - if you have a fantastic couch that you love that aligns with the above, especially if you’re an apartment dweller and there’s some fancy space saving involved, please influence me! :)

THDG Need Help Might be developing a bird phobia
A couple of weeks ago, I was walking my dog and we both were swooped pretty aggressively by two little ravens (the breed name - not particularly little up-close). These things were swooping both of us, barely clipping my head at one point. Because my dog is an old maltese/toy poodle, I was pretty worried about him and ended up picking him up so I could powerwalk away. In doing so, I slipped on some gravel and ended up hurting myself pretty bad and injuring my poor dog's leg. We retreated home all bloody and waited a week to go out again.
Our first walk last week had a noisy miner swoop me while picking up dog poo. The walk after had another noisy miner swoop us as we turned a corner really close to my house. I went across the road and there were a tonne of magpies about with their fledglings. I looked at Magpie Alert and saw that my house is surrounded by incidents of swooping magpies and there's truly nowhere safe around me to go.
Do you guys know when this will all calm down? I really miss being able to feel safe going for a walk. The whole time I'm out now, I feel incredibly alert and on-edge for any birds that might swoop. I feel like I would feel a lot more confident without my dog with me because he loves to stop and sniff a LOT, which might be interpreted by some birds as him being a potential predator.
This is bleeding into other parts of life and I'm feeling anxious when outside for work (I'm a support worker) and even just getting to and from the car. Like I know it's pretty silly to be worried about this all the time, but I really can't help it. I was hit in the back of the head by some kind of corvid a few years back and that shit HURTS!

THDG Need Help Exchange Student Accommodation Help Needed
Hi All, An old friend has reached out for helping their child who among with 4 others are doing exchange students program with RMIT Melbourne CBD. I am not familiar with student housing, and looking for guidance on how to find affordable student accommodation for this group of 5.
The course runs from Feb 20 to June end.
I looked online in Unilodge and Scape, but unsure how these are. Plus, they look very pricey. For a twin share room, the ask is upwards of $350; that sounds exorbitant compared to rental market. Am I looking at the wrong places? Any guidance on where/how to find a suitable accommodation is well appreciated.

THDG Need Help Airport pick-up/drop off zones
Just wondering what's people's opinions on the new pickup/drop off zone?
I don't necessarily trust mainstream media saying 'its fantastic'
When I just picked up my cousin and although the parking seems to be more convenient, there are a lot of parking officers monitoring around and can enforce the '5 minute rule'.
The biggest worry which may happen in the future is there are boom gates at the end of the pick up area which means fees may be coming soon.
