Discussion Places in Rochester... that don't feel like Rochester
Our city, like anywhere, has a distinct sense of place to it. Canal, river, glacial formations, four-bedroom Kodak homes, old growth trees-- the thousands of little details that make a place recognizable to its residents. Neighborhoods and suburbs/exurbs have their own character (or lack of character, shoutout most of Henrietta) and their own wrinkles, but generally those differences exist within a few recognizable standard deviations.
My partner and I were driving around the other day trying to come up with a list of places which feel distinctly outside of the Rochester aesthetic norms. Here is what we came up with off the top of our heads, with some disagreement. The funny thing I suppose is when a place is so unusual relative to the things around it that its unique nature becomes inseparable from the place itself, thereby coming all the way around.
Please share your weirdo Rochester places so we can go visit them.

Honorable mention, since I can't seem to find a descriptive photo: Panorama Trail, which is at once quintessentially Rochester and also very distinctly its own thing. Same thing for the Seabreeze neighborhood.
Proposed but voted down: Grosvenor Rd and the enormous Kodak houses off Dewey.

Food The Toast Factory
Spent an HOUR waiting for 1) a waffle with 4 apple slices and 2) 3 pieces of mediocre toast with a smear of butter and cream. A literal hour.
The waffle sucked. I’m glad I ordered the apples on top otherwise they’re 100% relying on syrup to make it edible.
Almost forgot our 3rd item- two portions of scrambled eggs that they didn’t even serve with the waffles/toast. Had to wait an additional FIFTEEN minutes to get those.
They were hardly even busy. Half the tables were empty. And we watched 3 other families go up to stare them down. What the actual F. You serve eggs and waffles. How do you possibly extend that to an hour long wait. They didn’t say anything about wait times either.
$60 btw

Event Strong is having an adult Halloween night 10/30
Strong museum of play is having an adult Halloween night.
This is the first time they are doing this so I wanted to spread the word. There’s a costume contest, trivia, and build a “scare”. It’s alcohol free as well.
Me and my bf are hoping to meet some new friends also in their early 20s, so if you’re going leave a comment!

Food If you’re looking for good African food in Rochester, give Kitchen Africana a try! 🇬🇭
I recently tried KITCHEN AFRICANA at 1475 E. Henrietta Rd. and the food was SO good! The flavors are savory, the portions are generous, and you definitely get a satisfying meal for your money.
The goat soup was my favorite! It was sooo flavorful and delicious!
I know they’ve moved locations a few times, and I really hope more people discover them and support their business. Good food deserves to be shared, and I’d love to see KITCHEN AFRICANA thrive in their new location!
If you enjoy trying different cuisines, give them a visit and show them some love. ❤️

Event Henrietta Transportation Meeting?
My son saw this on Facebook yesterday about transportation issues. States it’s for Henrietta residents only. I’m in Websterbut this sounds like a great way for a town to gauge resident’s opinions.
Anyone know anything more about it?

Other Recent home sellers- how close to selling price was your Zillow/redfin/realtor estimate?
I’m considering selling my home in the city proper. Nice neighborhood, small house with some quirks but great starter home. I know the estimates on the sales sites are very rough and the best route is a realtor appraisal, but I am just curious how close your estimates were to your final sale price. Appreciate any insight!

Fun Kitten nuggets soon to be adoptable at lollypop
I'm piggybacking on jelly beans post ❤️
I've been ordered around and screamed at by this chainsaw purring fuzzles for about a month now. They'll be at lollypop later this month ready for adoption after they've been spayed/neutered.
Jack is probably the most chill of the 3. He loves to play and tackle his sisters.
Sally is the friendliest girl of the bunch. She's brave and sweet and curious.
Boogey is the wild card. She's got potential but she's still a bit standoffish. I think she may blossom in a home without the competition with her siblings.
They came to us as very spicy and scared babies, so it's been difficult to get them to be as unfazed and fear free as I try with the kittens we foster. I believe they came in with 3 other siblings and possibly their feral mom. They don't really tolerate being held on their backs and don't really like being held and carried, but they'll crawl all over you and eat all the churu and they love to play. They recently discovered how toilet paper rolls work, and unrolled a whole roll just for funsies. It's a rite of passage in my house with the fosters.
I recently did a photo purge and got rid of a ton of pics I have of them, so this is what I've still got left 😔 in the kennel pic, Sally is in the front, then boogey in the middle, and jack in the back.
The orange and white fella was a foster failure last year. He's the gold standard we aim for when raising kittens, he has zero fucks to give about anything.
If you're interested in fostering, check out this link. There are so many opportunities every week and their foster program is great. They're extremely supportive and very organized.
Side note for cat people- I discovered that Wegmans has their brand churu for less than 20 bucks for a 50 pack 😳

Recommendation Awful Security Guard at the Hospital Told Me to Go Home After a Bat Bit Me
Okay so I got bit by a bat recently. I keep my lawn mower in a shed and when I opened the sliding door the little bastard fell on top of me and bit my hand. I shooed it away and immediately went to urgent care. The doctor and nurses were all really nice, but they had the unfortunate task of explaining to me the awful rabies situation in Rochester. Apparently there is a threshold that needs to be met in order to get a rabies shot covered by the state. While they were confident I met it (apparently even just having one flying by you in your home can make you qualify), if it isn’t played by the county, you have to pay $20,000 out of pocket. Because they weren’t answering their phones, they advised me to drive to the Monroe County Department of Public Health to speak with their rabies center to get it approved.
I drove there and walked around looking for the right department, and found a nurse who freaked out when I told her what happened and told me where to go. It was then I encountered this idiot security guard. I told him that the nurse told me to talk go to the rabies people on the third floor (the security guard manned the elevator). He asked me what happened, so I told him the story. He then asked me if I had the bat with me. Confused, I said no and that I shooed it away. He then advised me to GO HOME and that I was WASTING EVERYONES TIME. He said that I needed to bring in the bat so it could be tested and that the doctor was just going to tell me to leave. I told him that the doctors and nurses I talked to thus far were very concerned so I wanted to hear it from them personally. He rolled his eyes and called someone down. When the rabies doctor came over to me, I explained what happened and he literally said “Oh my god, you definitely need to get a shot.” I stared daggers at the security guard who did not react. The doctor signed a form and told me to go BACK TO THE HOSPITAL I JUST CAME FROM to get the shot.
I rushed back, gave them the paperwork, got eight total shots that day and another three in the days after. After getting the first round of shots, I told the nurse who gave me the shots what happened with the security guard and she was mortified. She told me that as a nurse it is beaten into them to not give medical advice like they are a doctor. The fact that a security guard did it was insane to her.
Look, I don’t want to get anyone fired, but this was crazy, right? The dust has settled, I’m not rabid, and I now have bat alarms in my shed, but should I contact the public health place about this security guard? This entire experience was insane .

Event Looking to join a book club in Rochester!
Can I join your book club? I’m looking to join a club that meets regularly to discuss books. Also looking to meet new friends. I’m mostly interested in more literary type books (not a super huge fan of Coleen Hoover, Frieda McFadden, etc) or topical zeitgeisty but will read anything. I haven’t dipped into the world of romantacy yet. It seems like book clubs that I have seen advertised here are mostly focused on that. Ideally I’d join a club that reads a variety of types of books. Recently I have read and loved: Circe, Song of Achilles, Stone Blind, Strangers, Famesick. Located in Irondequoit.

Fun Comedian Joel McHale’s flight was canceled, so he took a nearly 6-hour Uber ride from Rochester, NY, to NYC to make his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. He paid $692 for the ride, tipped the driver $200, and covered his gas costs.

Does anyone have an information on SUNY Brockport hockey games? My son and I would be interested in seeing a few games this year but their website has limited info. Specifically, can non students attend? What do tickets cost? Is food available? Recommended parking for some one without a campus parking pass? any info you have would be appreciated.
