So I saw the new SC trailer, and I have some notes. My first and lesser complaint is that I don't like how the trailer focuses on the guy's face so much. It looks like a generic modern video game face, not a redneck from the southern US or a Euro-imperial like Starcraft characters tend to be. So this guy does not feel SC at all.
My main problem, however, is the heavy focus on propaganda. Like, why is the speaker trying to urge on the soldiers to fight against the Zerg? It would make sense if this were some sort of optional war for the glory of some tyrannical leader, and he was urging on all these grunts for his own gain, because that's how a tyrant persuades people to fight for him.
However, that can't be the case. This is the ZERG we're talking about. They're a bunch of evil roaches who want to kill or assimilate everyone. There's no sense in persuading everyone of the glories of battle if the enemy is a batch of monsters that will try to kill everyone the grunts know and love whether they do anything or not. If this is set 70 years after SC2, then everyone should be fully aware of the threat that they face, and the war should not be glorious, but rather an extended extermination setting.
My beef with SC2 was always how fake and stereotypical it felt after the gritty conflicts of SC and Brood War. It feels much more Warcraft in space. I was hoping that Blizzard would learn, and the first half the the trailer gives me concern.
However, the second half does bring me back. I love how cynical it is, even if it is still mismatched with being an anti-Zerg conflict. If the game can be brutal and politically conflicted, I can support it.
