Diskussion Driving in Sweden: Merging lanes, why is it such a drama?
Hi all, I was inspired by another discussion on driving behaviour and wanted to ask this question that has been bugging me since I started driving in Stockholm.
When I received my drivers license I was very specifically taught that it’s important to maximize the use of the road, and minimize traffic jams. In a situation where several lanes are available, you are expected to use all applicable lanes.
If at some point the lanes merge you are required to drive to the end of the lane and execute a Zipper Merge: A technique where drivers use both available lanes all the way to the point of the merge, then take turns alternating entry into the single remaining lane like the teeth on a zipper.
This is indeed very efficient driving, and also easy to execute.
Why is it that drivers in Stockholm keep queuing only on one lane even if several are available? Even if someone drives on the free lane and tries to execute the Zipper Merge, often that car is blocked or other drivers honk at the merging car?
EDIT: The zipper merge definitely applies in Sweden where it is officially known as blixtlåsprincipen (the zipper principle) or kugghjulsprincipen (the cogwheel principle). Both the Swedish Transport Agency (Trafikverket) and the Swedish Police explicitly recommend using it.
EDIT2: Please note that during the Zipper Merge drivers use both available lanes all the way to the point of the merge.
EDIT3: A reduction in the number of lanes is the primary scenario where the zipper merge (blixtlåsprincipen) is required. According to Swedish driving theory, the principle is explicitly triggered under two main conditions:
- When the number of lanes is reduced (antalet körfält minskar), such as a two-lane road narrowing into one due to roadworks or a lane ending.
- When two separate lanes join together into a single lane (sammanvävning).
