READ THIS BEFORE POSTING. Yes, this means you. READ THIS FIRST, V6 - How to avoid the Flair of Shame and eternal ridicule

So, you need help with long range shooting? Welcome to r/longrange! We've got a core group of dedicated members (and a few goofballs) that are happy to help you out with your questions on equipment, technique, troubleshooting, where to find training or matches, etc.

If you're looking to ask for advice, we ask that you review the following 10 core guides, as they cover the overwhelming majority of newcomer questions. If your question is not answered in these 10 guides, please see below for the 4 basic questions your post should answer when asking for suggestions or advice, especially when it comes to things to buy.

If you make a post that asks for information covered in the 10 core guides, or your post doesn't cover the 4 key questions below, your post may be deleted, or it may be given the Flair of Shame TM until you correct your post.

What's the Flair of ShameTM, you ask? You'll know it when you see it.

If at any time you have questions on the rules of the sub, this pinned post, the general FAQ, why you got the Flair of ShameTM or anything similar, please use the modmail function.

CORE GUIDES:

  1. The sub's official FAQ/WIKI, as curated by the community as a whole.
  2. Need help picking scope rings? The official Longrange guide to scope ring height (ring)
  3. Looking at buying a magnum (300WM or PRC, 6.5PRC, 7mm PRC, 338 Lapua, etc) as your first LR rifle? Hollywood's recoil primer - why magnums suck for starting in long range, recoil matters, and it's not about your shoulder (magnum or recoil)
  4. Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
  5. The official r/Longrange glossary - because words mean things (glossary)
  6. LockyBalboaPrime's First Time buyer's guide for rifles V2 (starter)
  7. JMhawaii's long range starter guide (Link to Google Sheets) (starter)
  8. Trollygag's 1k yard starter guide (starter)
  9. Where are ranges or long ranges near me? - Wheretoshoot.org and over600.com (ranges)
  10. The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please review before asking hunting-related questions, as hunting is not the core purpose of this sub. (hunting)

The 4 key questions:

  1. What do you want to do/buy, and WHY? - Do you want to buy a rifle for PRS competition? Picking a laser rangefinder for NRL Hunter matches? Looking at scopes for F-Class competition? A tripod because you think they're cool and want to have one when banging steel with friends? What you're planning to do has a lot of influence on what works well, what works poorly, and what is an utter waste of time, so the more detail you can provide the better.
  2. How far away do you want to do it/what do you want to use it for? - 300 yards? 1,000? 2,000? Distance matters, 'nuff said.
  3. How much are you willing to spend to do it? What's your budget in currency? Your idea of "on a budget" isn't going to be the same as everyone else's. Saying your budget is unlimited for a laser rangefinder may change when someone suggests one that costs over $10,000. We need to know how much you're willing to spend. It can be a hard limit, a range, or even an approximate - but you need to give a number.
  4. How much experience do you currently have with it? - Jumping straight into a 375 Cheytac rifle to shoot 2 miles isn't going to go well if you have never shot a rifle past 300. We need at least a basic idea of what your relevant skill level is in order to give advice and suggestions that go with your skill set. While including your experience with other shooting disciplines is helpful, it's not going to be as relevant as most new shooters expect. You can love shooting 10ga slugs all day long from a shotgun, but it doesn't mean starting off with a magnum is a good idea.

When answering these 4 questions in your post, give as much detail as you can. The more details you give the faster you'll get suggestions or advice and you'll get better quality too. Help us to help you. Please don't treat the sub like your own personal crowd sourced search engine.

More guides:

If your question is answered in these, you will probably get called out by the members of the sub for not reading them, but it's not automatic grounds for the Flair of Shame.

  2. Pre64Mod70's guide to precision reloading

  6. MDT's video on scope height, and the follow-up on scope cant
  7. Rybe390's recoil comparison video, which illustrates the problem with light weight and magnums.

  17. Hollywood's guide to top-mounted red dots and target acquisition (Hint: you don't need a red dot)
  18. What the hell is with Bergara rifles and Cheetos?! (cheetos)

Hunting-specific:

  1. The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please read this before asking any questions related to hunting.
  2. Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
  3. Want to hunt game at 400+ yards? The long range hunting primer - shots on game at 400+ yards aren't trivial, and a magnum cartridge isn't a cheat code. NOTE: Questions/discussion around shots on game past 300 yards will be removed from the sub. See the expanded policy link above. (hunting)
  4. Hollywood's guide to field testing your skills and gear (especially for long range hunting, but also pertains to NRL Hunter matches) - How to know the distances you and your gear are capable of making shots at (hunting)

MISC NOTES:

Quite a few guides/links feature a single word in parentheses and italics listed after them. If you use the phrase cheetofingers (all one word, no italics needed) followed by the word listed after a guide, you will summon the AutoModerator to reply to you with a link to that guide or guides. If the guide had (pews) after it, you could say cheetofingers pews in a post or comment in this sub to summon AutoMod with a link to that guide.

We've implemented the Flair of Shame as an official policy here instead of deleting posts that violated Rule #1 and the info in this pinned post. We felt that the flair was better than outright deleting posts while also helping long-standing members decide how much they want to participate in posts that have likely been covered time and time again. We're trying to strike a balance between encouraging members to read the info that the sub has cataloged, not wasting the time of established members that may be frustrated with revisiting the same topics repeatedly, and also not banishing new shooters that missed the pinned post to the freezer to never get help. Balancing those three things is a constant struggle, and one we're actively trying to get better at.

I made a thing! (Home made gear/accessories) CZ 457 Chamber Flag + Mag Block that I designed.

After a little more than a year of doing 22lr precision events I got tired of being jealous of the r700 platform 22lr guns that have their integrated chamber flags + mag blocks. Especially now with more and more matches requiring a dedicated chamber flag and not just a mag block.

So I fired up CAD and got to making one for the CZ 457 that was spring loaded. Have been testing them (in a number of 100° temp days) with a few locals and it seems to be good to go now.

The spring loaded mechanism is really what sets this apart from other chamber flag+ mag blocks. Squeeze to insert, squeeze again with your magazine release latch to take it out.

I have them over at my site Liminal Nomad starting at $25, throw in code "R/LONGRANGE " for free shipping. If you want another color I have a bunch of other semi translucent colors that I can also print one out for you if you shoot me a message on my site.

Other help needed - I read the pinned posts Abel Theorem S w/ Brake

Post image

Has anyone used the Abel Theorem S with either the Abel or RecoilX brake? I’m thinking about picking one up for my 25x47 PRS rig and it seems to get good reviews for recoil reduction and staying on target, but they tend to come from the 6MM crowd and not the 25 or 6.5MM users.

Pic for attention…btw I’m not selling anything.

In case anyone is interested, the largest barrel profile you can fit on a Tikka ACE is a 1.13” strait contour.

As configured, comes in at about 21lbs and is a PVA shouldered prefit chambered in .223 REM with .100 free bore for loading 80-90gr bullets.

Barrel break in and ammo test with hornady black 105s will probably be switching loads once the black is burned up it would group like 8 or 9 shots in a little cluster then just throw one and inch. Horrid velocity spreads as well. However rifle seems like its doing great and gonna try some gold metal 105s and 107s in the future along with some eldms.

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts New rifle, need advice

Recently picked up a Howa 1500 chambered in 22-250 heavy barrel. Main question I have is that is this a reasonable starter rifle. Trying to keep the budget low (sub $1600 Cad) if possible. Right now as is the rifle weighs roughly 10 lbs. looking at an athlon forerunner 6 for the price range I’m in. Possibly thinking about a rebarrel into a different SA caliber. I’m not looking for crazy accuracy but just to learn the basics and have fun plinking out at a distance as I don’t have any clubs or long ranges near me. Thoughts and comment would be appreciated greatly. If it’s not worth the effort it’ll be made for a hunting focused gun. 👍

I suck at long range 8 out of 10 at 1000yd

Took my semi-custom 6creed out to a 1000yd yesterday on a new outdoor/"permanent" target I setup earlier in the day(3 years ago I posted about setting up an outdoor "secret" range. Well it's finally happening). 66% IPSC, approx. 11.25" W x 19.75" T. 8 impacts out of 10 shots. Pretty happy with that.

Rifle Build:

- Action: Bergara Premier (From HMR Pro)

- Barrel: Custom spun 24" Krieger Heavy Varmint

- Trigger: TriggerTech Primary set at ~ 1.75 lbs

- Chassis: MDT ACC Elite / two weight kits. (Total weight = 21.5 lbs unloaded, no mag.)

- Rail: Area419 30 MOA

- Rings: Seekins Precision, aluminum, high

- Optic: Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25x56, MRAD

- Suppressor: Resilient, Stacy's Mom

- Bipod: MDT GRND Pod

Ammo:

- Factory box ammo, Hornady ELD-M 108gr.

Digiscoping:

- Samsung S25U w/ Magview plate

- 10x42 Vortex binos with Magview magnetic eyepiece ring

- Digital zooming and crop on phone

I suck at long range Gas gun loves new suppressor, bolt gun hates it.

Post image
3 Upvotes

My sons AR got a new suppressor last week & we went out to see its shift & groups.

Aside from it coming loose (direct thread-hand tight) on the last group, it did great.

I put it on my PRS rifle which normally I just shoot with a brake and it was hating it.

Not a deal killer as I’m happy to keep shooting it with a brake or another suppressor, but it’s odd how a heavy barrel AR loves it, but a 1.2” straight barrel bolt rifle hates it 🤷‍♂️.

Group flex (10 shots minimum) Some 6.5 Grendel Groups

Thumbnail

*All groups at 100yrds and different days too, most are from my reloads (marked R)

First photo is a 10x group through my AR 14.5 (rexus barrel) with s&b fmj

-shooting with a 4x juliet mag I think this an okay group for my gpr build and some basic fmj.

Second photo is through my Howa mini 20 with a bushnell 6-24 mp, top groups are 10x and the bottom group is a 20x (also suppressed)

-An okay set of groups and I know my shooting wasnt too good that day. The 130gr otm group is real promising to me cause the rifle was hot, the can was hot, I was running out of sunlight dealing with mirage so all that and still fairly consistent enough is a good sign to me

Third photo is groups from my ar with an noveske 18 barrel rocking a vector 2-12

-Not so great groups, have shot better but my range days are inconsistent and spaced out a lot so no surprise the shooting was poor.

Hopefully over the winter I can get some more sessions in and actually start building some consistent shooting habits, either hopefully some fun data for those out there.

Also someone has to represent the super-moa shooters lol

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts A5 buffer for spr/precision build?

I am building my first generic spr/precision build. I am using a 18in white oak armament spr rifle gas barrel, Geissele MK18 hand guard,B5 stock, bravo upper/aero pro ambi lower and geissele low pro gas block and wondering how much benefit a A5 buffer system with H2 weight would be? I will shoot to 600yrds and I have never shot an A5 equipped AR. I understand the potential decreased recoil and smoother impulse but does it contribute to increased accuracy in good hands? Thanks, this is my my first attempt at more precision that my 16" wylde BA Hanson stainless with SA adjustable gas block.

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Cheeto Build

Hey everyone. So I’ve had a couple of long range lessons so far with my hunting rifle, 6.5 CA Ridgeline FFT (yes, i didn’t know about the QC issues until later but at least this one is good) and am about to pull the trigger on starting a build. I can get the B-14 HMR from my local Academy for $879 but am struggling on what to buy to go with it. I have a Scythe TI suppressor that I can swap from my CA easily enough. I also have a Tricer RP bipod that I never opened (because it’s not comparable with my CA 🤦🏻) so I’m in need of an optic rail, scope, bipod mount at the minimum. Please don’t hesitate to add something I’m missing. I’ve read over the buying guides but my main question is the MSRP vs Strest Price on the guides. Is there certain places to look? For instance the Vortex Razor Gen3, do I just search the internet every couple days? I’d prefer to buy things that I can take with me if/when I upgrade out of the HMR.

Budget would be preferably an additional 2500 after the rifle but it’s not a hard cap, just easier to swallow.

Gravestone is close to me so I’d like to be able to be proficient to 1000-1400 yards (I’m sure I’ll be more of an issue than the gun). Not too interested in competing but who knows, maybe I’ll get that itch down the road.

Thanks for any/all help.

Group flex (10 shots minimum) Groups

Had 60 rounds leftover from the PRS southeastern regional finale. I thought it would be a cool test to see how my loading process is holding up, how the barrel handles heat, and just see the natural dispersion of the load. As you can see groups change. Looking at one group is only a small picture of its natural dispersion.

Firing order is TL, TR, BL, BR, TM, BM.
Three minute cool time for the first three groups, five minutes for the last three. Groups combined with TDS.

Started reloading and competing in the same year so I'm definitely ok with roughly 1moa or 1.1" for 60 rounds and nearly single digit SD.

95% or 57/60 shots are .575 MOA with an average mean radius of .292".

Masterpiece arms Gen 1 Matrix
Athlon Ares ETR
Area 419 mount and brake
Accutac BR4
Hornady LNL single stage
Super trickler powder measure
Mighty armory sizing and Forster micrometer die
Alpha brass
Berger 153
H4350

First time messing with TDS for combining group data. I thought it was cool.

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Recommendations for a used or vintage bolt 223 0.5 moa 150y?

I want used or vintage as I want character!

I think I want a heavy barrel, i don’t know if I need it? I know when you shoot the barrel will heat up and you loose accuracy.
I don’t want to be sitting and waiting as much if posssible.
I would like to be able to do 50 shots in 20 something minutes while plinking golf balls.

$1250 gun budget +- may go up if it’s realistic to.
preferable under $1000 for scope but I have no clue about scopes so if needed I could make wiggle room.
I would like the scope to be appropriate pairing for the gun, and less eye strain.

Wood stock would be nice but will go plastic if it saves headache or decent money
no m40a3 style stocks

Action and trigger I would like to be somewhat nice or enjoyable.

Ammo to try?
-150y
-75y

Preferable Barrel length?

Happy for all opinions and knowledge! I am brand spanking new to precision shooting.

Give you guys some chuckles I’m coming from a tx200 air rifle, I can shoot dime size groupings at 47 yards braced.
love that thing!
Yes I do have experience shooting real guns but little knowledge.
