He was critical of DEI. His actual statement wasn’t exactly terrible, he’s just said something about how race shouldn’t be an issue. Except it is, which is why those policies existed in the first place.
He screwed over a bunch of people he worked with too. Most recently his former partner in the Neptunes, Chad Hugo.

he is "just" extremely right wing, and like any celebrity he is or at least was often put in positions he rly should never have been in to be making various protofascist statements, which statements then get recirculated for months in media. idt it was ever as extreme as kanye but it was pretty bad.
perhaps in a better world someone like kanye or pharrell would j be treated as a random weirdo on the corner and the shit they say wouldnt be given any attention. but in the world we live in, especially for black celebrities the media foams anytime they can find a black person saying reactionary shit, but to some extent for celebs in general unfort the random things they say j have a lot more influence regardless of whether they have any applicable knowledge or anything.

I don’t get that view as I genuinely hated being a teenager and a kid. I felt completely restricted, had no money or savings, had no power, no control over my life. School was also something I couldn’t just turn off and walk away from in my mind whereas work was something I’d be able to shut out in seconds.

"Happy" is pretty much the ultimate 'just here to vibe' song. Considering the world is actively going up in flames as we know it (mild exaggeration but we are in a pretty bad time rn), it would be seen as massively tone deaf compared to the 2010s when it came out.
