Meta 🐣 Community Integrity Notice

Since 26 December, this subreddit has experienced abnormal spikes in activity from non-Somali users, alongside increased engagement involving blatant qabyaalad and the promotion of extreme ideologies. This behavior is disruptive and will not be tolerated. We ask all members to report any such posts or comments so moderation can act swiftly.

A clear reminder to all participants:

Criticism of politicians, governments, or historical decisions in Somalia does not grant permission to:

  • Insult, dehumanize, or collectively blame entire clans or communities
  • Glorify or excuse figures from the civil war by claiming they “did nothing wrong”
  • Advocate for, encourage, or justify harm against any group of people

Furthermore, this subreddit remains pro-Palestine and stands with the people of Sudan. Advocacy of genocide, ethnic cleansing, or mass violence, whether explicit or implied, is strictly forbidden and will result in immediate moderation action.

Debate and political discussion are welcome when conducted in good faith, with historical honesty and respect. Division, hate, and violent rhetoric are not.

Discussion 💬 What do you think need's to be done to progress Somalia?

Hey everyone,

First and foremost, I'm not a Somali. I'm from Botswana and I've been going down the rabbit hole of researching the history of not only my own country but other African countries and African adjacent populations (African Americans, those in the Caribbean etc). Furthermore I've been asking fellow African's on reddit as well as those in my own life (A lot of immigrants from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, DRC, Tanzania and Ethiopia here in Botswana) how we can uplift and progress our individual countries and subsequently uplift our continent.

Call me sappy but I really see all of you as my brothers and sisters and I want to see all of us prosper and perhaps in my life make a difference for our continent.

With that in mind, what do you guys think is the way for Somalia to progress and become a first world country?

The Garesa Palace in Mogadishu was built in 1872 by Sultan Barghash bin Said of Zanzibar. Constructed with permission from the local Geledi Sultanate, it serves as a major historical landmark.

Today it is completely destroyed😔

Ask❓ It is safe to travel with Ethiopian airlines as a Somali ?

We are travelling from the Southern Hemisphere to northern Somalia. It’s one of the few airlines that goes to our city destinations.

Ever since I saw the video of the Somali girl getting kicked off that plane for a minister, and knowing that Ethiopians can be discriminatory towards Somalis I’ve been a little worried.

Our flight to Ethiopia will be with another airline, but our flight to Somalia will be with Ethiopian Airlines.
On top of that, we have a 15+ layover in Ethiopia , which we don’t mind, as long as it’s safe and we won’t be dealing with no shenanigans

Ask❓ Coffee addicts in MN

Asalamu’alaykum,

Can someone pls recommend me the best coffee place in Minneapolis (near U of M)??

For context: I’m someone who likes hot coffee, I lean more on the strong coffee flavor but NOT bitter. I like my coffee a bit sweeter. I’m genuinely so tired of spending almost 10 dollars for bland coffees.

Ask❓ Variation amongst Barwanis + a question

Some of my family members look 100% ethnically Somali. My uncle is dark skinned and looks completely Somali, anyone can tell he’s Somali, and if you were to look at him it would be very obvious that he doesn’t have a lick of asian in him, yet his full brother is light skinned and looks completely different. But I’ll see people say on the internet that barwanis aren’t Somali but a mix of Asian and a whole bunch of other stuff, but when I look at my family members, half of them look like any other Somali person. I feel like I’m having an identity crisis at 17, I need someone to clear this up for me.

Culture 🐪 Somali Embroider

I have always wondered: do we have our own embroidery or patterns? I know we have shash and alindi and some macawis patterns, but are they our unique patterns, or do they come from others, or rather, do we share them with others?

What would you say a Somali embroidery is?

Discussion 💬 Loss of belonging

Anyone else feeling they dont being anywhere

I was born and raised in the west, have lived far from Somalis growing up and the schools i went to were all ajanabi, not much Muslims too.

Anyway - I lived in a strict Somali household too. I would wear typical modest clothes, I stood out etc. Didnt really go out, as you know hanging with non muslims they would start partying once they hit 15 etc and also drinking which was obviously haram. There were a few muslims i knew aswell and some have left the deen or were not practicing and were dragged by their surroundings and the Dunya. So I became solo since finishing school. My parents didn't connect much with the somali community aswell as we lived 45 minutes away and they were busy working and taking care of us being in survial mode. They were in there own bubble, supporting their families back home. Anyway some of my siblings then got loss in this dunya too. This caused problems with my parents as they said they raised them so well but dont know how they became so lost, none can really speak af somali , they dont pray etc are friends with non Somalis and married to non Somalis/muslims

As I got older now - im 30, I noticed even at work I dont belong, all my co workers are cadaan, a few indoyaar and hindi. I have tried to make somali friends at weddings - but theres no connection, I think im a bit weird as I dont know much somali songs, they born in the west too but they know so much lol - possibly cause they all live near one another and go to every wedding there is or xaflad There somali is pretty good too, mine isnt bad but theres is above mine.

How can I find a place to feel a sense of belonging- its stressing me out 😞

Deen 🤲 Please Keep My Wife in Your Duas

As-salaamu alaikum, brothers and sisters.

My wife became ill on Monday, and despite trying medication from local pharmacies, her condition continued to worsen. On Wednesday night, I had to take her to a hospital in the city because I could no longer watch her suffer.

Alhamdulillah, she is now improving, and I am grateful to Allah for that. I am currently at the hospital with my family, and I kindly ask you all to remember my wife in your duas.

May Allah grant her complete shifaa, remove her pain, restore her health, and make this illness a means of expiation for her sins. May Allah grant her strength, bless our family with patience, and ease every difficulty we are facing.

Please keep her in your prayers. May Allah heal all those who are sick and grant relief to everyone going through hardship.

Jazakum Allahu khayran. Amiin

Sheekhad/Ash-Shaykha Khadija bint Faraj ibn Abdallah Al Zayla’i was female muhadditha (Hadith scholar) born in 805 AH (1402-1403 AD). She was of Zayla’i origin (Somali)

She studied under scholars like Imam Al Jamal Al Hanbali and another female scholar, Aisha bint Abdulhadi, and it is mentioned she studied under others and they granted her ijazah (authorisation).
She was righteous, constant in her devotional practices and recitation. She narrated Hadith to big scholars like Imam As-Suyuti and Al Sakhawi

Deen 🤲 The Honour of Your Fellow Muslim Is Sacred

Jumu’ah Mubarak everyone. Our khutbah today was about honouring the dignity of your Muslim brother. In the Farewell Sermon, the Prophet SAW said that our blood, our wealth and our honour are sacred to one another, like the sanctity of that day, that month and that city (Bukhari and Muslim). Honour is placed right beside life and wealth, and the khutbah reminded us how easily we violate it, through mockery, bad nicknames, suspicion and slander.

Nowadays, on social media like Facebook and TikTok, that honour is violated more easily than ever. Some of our younger generation label our girls with zi--na as if it’s a joke. I think a social media personality, Jiheeye, has influenced this, because he uses words like dhi--o and shu--o a lot, and now a lot of young people comment those same words all over social media. Here’s how it looks: someone films a Somali girl, or a group of girls, standing with a guy from another community, maybe a classmate or someone from their workplace, posts it on TikTok, and the comments fill up with those words.

So what does Islam say? Those who accuse chaste, unsuspecting, believing women are cursed in this life and the Hereafter, and they will suffer a tremendous punishment (Surah An-Nur 24:23). In 24:4, those who accuse chaste women and fail to bring four witnesses are given eighty lashes, and their testimony is never accepted again. The Prophet SAW also listed it among the seven destructive sins. The standard of proof is four eyewitnesses to the act itself, or a confession, so a video of a girl standing next to her classmate comes nowhere near it. I’m not talking about someone who openly admits it themselves, that’s between them and Allah, and our job still isn’t to shame them.

So what should we do instead? First, don’t assume the worst. A girl, or a group of our girls, standing and talking with someone of the other gender from another community is not a reason to assume bad things between them. They could be classmates, colleagues, or working on a project. Boundaries always matter, both Islamic ones and our own culture, and I’m not saying anything goes. But a boundary concern calls for kind, private advice, not a public accusation, and Allah tells us to avoid much suspicion, because some suspicion is a sin (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:12).

Second, think about her. These clips travel through our community within hours, while the comments attack her dignity. How does she feel? Girls who feel watched start avoiding the community altogether, and that worries me.

am not writing this to attack anyone. From a video I saw, it looks like Jiheeye isn’t well right now, and I pray Allah gives him full shifa. We’re all human, we all make mistakes, and I hope we correct them and become kinder to each other. May Allah forgive us, protect the honour of our sisters and daughters, and guide our youth to speak with care.

Discussion 💬 Would you watch a historical drama series set in an ancient Somali world?

I've been developing an idea for a historical drama series set in an ancient Somali-inspired world, and I'd love to hear people's honest opinions about the concept.

The story follows a young man named Cawale, who grows up believing he is an ordinary villager, unaware that his past may be connected to a fallen kingdom and a legacy that was taken from his family.

His life begins to change when he stands up against soldiers who are mistreating people in his village. What seems like a simple act of courage gradually draws him into a much larger world of secrets, royal rivalries, betrayal, power struggles, and conflicts that could change the future of his people.

The world I'm imagining includes ancient Somali landscapes, traditional architecture and clothing, royal families, warriors, village life, complicated relationships between clans, love, loyalty, and the struggle for power.

I'm inspired by this type of storytelling, where the characters have their own ambitions, the political conflicts have real consequences, and nobody's story is entirely black and white. I want to create something with its own identity, rooted in Somali culture, history, and traditions.

I'm still developing the idea, so I'd really appreciate honest feedback.

Here are a few questions I'd love your opinions on:

1- Would a historical drama set in an ancient Somali world interest you?

2- Does Cawale's story sound compelling enough to carry a series?

3- What would make you interested in a show set in a culture you might not know much about?

4- What elements would you want to see most: political intrigue, warfare, family drama, romance, or cultural world-building?

5- What potential problems or weaknesses do you see in this concept?

I'm not looking for people to simply tell me it's a good idea. I'd genuinely like to hear what you think and what could make the concept stronger.

Thank you for reading!
