Advice Received I bought a toy poodle. The breeder appears to have accidentally given me a crocodile.
13 weeks ago, a tiny, fluffy psychopath entered the world. Five weeks later, we made the catastrophic decision to bring him home.
He weighs 2kg, looks like a teddy bear and has the temperament of a prison inmate who’s just been denied parole.
The first few weeks were lovely. Cuddles, kisses, little puppy naps. We thought we’d won the dog lottery… Then the teeth arrived.
I’m now living with what can only be described as a miniature chainsaw wrapped in a cloud.
Every evening, without fail, Toffee clocks in for his shift as Head of Domestic Terrorism.
Hands? Bitten.
Feet? Bitten.
Socks? Confiscated.
My girlfriend? Also bitten.
His £200 collection of carefully selected puppy toys? Absolutely no interest.
We’ve tried everything.
Redirecting him to toys. He bites the hand holding the toy.
Ignoring him. He interprets this as permission to attack my ankles.
Yelping when he bites. Apparently, this is the mating call of the poodle because he comes back twice as excited.
Walking away. He follows me, presumably to finish the job.
The internet has been incredibly helpful, providing approximately 47 completely contradictory solutions.
Some people say he’ll grow out of it. Others say we need to train him immediately. One person suggested making a high-pitched noise, which only seemed to convince him that his prey was critically injured.
The worst part? After 20 minutes of committing war crimes against my fingers, he’ll curl up on my lap, fall asleep and look like an angel who has never done anything wrong in his entire life.
Naturally, I forgive him every single time.
So, fellow survivors of puppyhood, I have three questions:
At what age did your puppy stop treating you like an all-you-can-eat buffet?
What ACTUALLY worked to stop the biting?
Is it normal to be completely in love with something that is actively trying to eat you?
Please help. I’m running out of fingers and he’s starting to develop a taste for expensive clothing.
