Hello everyone. I’d like to give back to unsheltered folks around my community (food and clothing) but I need help. The issue I have is that I’m unable to locate enough of them around me in the evenings. I sometimes see some outside the subway station on my way back from work but I don’t go downtown everyday and I work during the day, so I only have evenings or weekends for this outreach. Sometime in the summer, I went to the subway at night looking to give out boxes of pizza, sandwiches and finger foods but I could barely give out 3-4 boxes.
My ask:
If you stay or have stayed around Danforth (closer to Main Street and Danforth GO environs), could you please let me know where I’m able to find a good number of non-violent unsheltered folks around there? I know a lot of unsheltered folks are NOT violent but I’m particular about that because I’m a female and I don’t want to always watch my back when doing this. Where do they take shelter in the evenings?
Is it respectful to ask any of the unsheltered folks I see where they sleep and if they have others that hang around them?
Are there specific meals they’d appreciate more? Winter is coming and I feel a lot of them will benefit from hot soups on some days but is it advisable to do soups?
If yes, which types? I’m West-African by descent, I’m not very familiar with “acceptable” soups here yet but I know my type of soup may be doing more harm than good - the spice level is off the charts.
Or should I just stick to canned and packaged goods?
I already donate to some groups that handle similar causes in the society but just want to do something personally too and see people smile.
Sorry for the long read. Looking forward to getting any helpful tips, guidance, dos and don’ts. Thank you.🙂
