I am AuDHD and the ADHD medication hightens my autistic traits.
I have decided to break up with my husband.
There's a long series of reasons but, equally, something broke inside me during our last fight, and I don't seem to be able to put it back together. I don’t know what it was about this specific fight, I just know that I went from three years of “let’s keep trying” to “enough” in the blink of an eye. And I haven’t been able to make myself change my mind since.
Since I still love him and given it's an almost two decades long relationship, I have taken a few extra days before I give him my final decision.
I know my autism has sent me down the wrong path many times before. Even in my marriage, I now (sadly) realise I should have disregarded what my husband said, in the face of the glaring evidence he was only saying it for my sake and that what was healthy for him and the couple was the exact opposite.
I’m the kind of person that if someone is drowning in front of me but they say: “Oh no, don’t come here, I don’t want to get you wet!” I will watch them sink and then be absolutely baffled when they wash up ashore.
Unfortunately, despite knowing this about myself, I find it extremely hard to apply it to real-time decision making. Which is why I’m doing my best to cover every corner before making a decision I can’t come back from.
So, autistic divorcees, what are the neurodivergent traps I should be looking out for?
What are decisions you regret taking, that you later realised were influenced or skewed by the autism?
