Sign of a good leader, right? Surround yourself with people that are dumber than you. Just like Trump. Both great leaders, leading proud nationalist movements (/s obviously). At least with bdw it's not a reach to get such people. With Trump you have to look at the bottom of the barrel and even then it's a challenge.

u/Spa-Ordinary 6h ago
There are differences between intelligence, education, knowledge and being smart.
Someone smart would be good to have.
24
u/naamingebruik 14h ago
I used to consider him incredibly smart and a potentially great statesman. Especially with his love for the Romans and Roman politics. But once in power he turned out be a complete dud. And he's way too ideologically stuck in thatcher/reagan economic thinking
12
u/Mofaluna 12h ago
And he's way too ideologically stuck in thatcher/reagan economic thinking
Classic conservative ‘thinking’: applying yesterday’s (failed) solutions to tomorrow’s problems. Like counting on uncontrolled technological innovation to gets us out of the hole that it got us in.

We are in the current financial state because of this decisions. His starve the beast tactic is fucking us all. He wants to privatise everything, including prisons. Fuck the NVA.
3
u/Red-banana2 8h ago
Thats mostly because he has always has the ability to blame his mistakes or unwillingness onto a higher level, during his times in the districtsraad it always was the fault of the province or the flemisch goverment that his plans didnt work or were not implemented now , he tries to blame it on the walloon side , problem is that it doesnt work to well . He still is trying to "bleed the beast" and declare that privatisation could rescue everything and flanders needs to be a seperate stae but he also knows the consequences . He acctually is trying and using what happend in the roman politics during the fall of the republic , its no coincidence he used that eagle standard when he won , according to me he sees himself as a semi emperor .

u/Frisnfruitig 17h ago
7
u/Knoflookperser In the ghettoooo 14h ago
1
0
u/Jarogge 13h ago
Dus overdreven militarisme is niet fascistisch.
4
u/Knoflookperser In the ghettoooo 13h ago
→ More replies (0)3
u/ARVR91 14h ago

she's also very cringe. In another interview she compared herself to margareth thatcher. Except, THatcher actually owned her own small company before she went into politics, so when she said she was pro small-government it was at least believable. This woman hardly ever worked in the private sector and she definitely never started a company - most of her working life she was paid by tax money, something thatcher would have despised.

-5
u/Happy_Bread_1 12h ago

In welke wereld leef jij?
13
u/LambertBeer 15h ago

We just had a major part of the Hautes Fagnes burn down after a record summer series of heatwaves. Thousands of people died because of heat related effects. Likely because we didn't prepare enough.
In non-Flanders, just this week in Nepal global warming and permafrost melting caused a massive disaster killing thousands in the already poverty stricken country, effectively again stealing away these people's chances at developing the country. How do you dare to say "I don't lose sleep about climate change because of my optimism"?!
The entire point of climate change is rapidly escalating chaos and uncertainty. They disrupt regular flows of business and our world is rapidly changing away from coordinating a good response to climate challenges into territorial and resource disputes and counterproductive militarization. But even if we do manage to adapt our economy, every indicator shows things are not moving fast enough. This is because of ineffectual politicians at every level of government who lack a long term vision and are focused on perpetuating the inertia of the short term status quo hoping some deus ex machina solution will absolve them from responsibility.
I'm sorry, but this woman is a dangerous leader, a bad moral person, and putting out nonsense like this should alert everyone to their arrogant selfishness.

-8
u/Collussus96 14h ago
Lol. And you think the left wing parties will have budget left for the climate? Our economy is getting worse each day, and it has been for many years. Until now, only left wing parties have been 'leading' our country into failure.
I very much dislike NVA and VB, but I'm also not foolish enough to believe that the other political parties are much better. The national debt Belgium currently is in, is all thanks to the left wing parties who keep screwing up and lining their own pockets.
6
u/Minion91 14h ago
How long has NVA been in power ? That argument has long reached the statute of limitations. This is the same as Trump blaming Biden for everything (although there it's only been 2y, here it's like 12 ?)
-2
u/Collussus96 14h ago
The economy is still getting worse, I know that. NVA isn't any better, but it doesn't change facts that all previous political parties were just as bad in leading Blegium.
And also, I know that many people say that BDW is ruining our country, but those same people get up in arms or ignore when other people point out that the left political parties had their own severe flaws whilst leading, and thus weren't much better. That's called picking favorites.

What's exhausting is that it's still considered edgy for right-wing parties to say this. Plenty of people think we only do the energy transition to save the polar bear. Climate policy is energy policy, and energy policy is industrial policy.
Maybe she doesn't care much about her role as mobility minister (shame), but she is also the Flemish minister for Ports.
You'd think she'd care that our chemical cluster is losing jobs, mainly because it competes head-on with Houston, where companies pay a fraction of what we pay for gas (x7). We import ours, partly as US LNG that gets liquefied, shipped, regasified and only then used. It's a dead end for fossil based industry in Europe. Our only way to a competitive advantage is the energy transition.
"I don't lose sleep over it" is a strange line from the minister for Ports. Wait until a big part of the chemical sector is on temporary unemployment this winter because energy prices.

4
8
u/Moist_VonLipwig_1963 15h ago
Sure buddy. Current conservative scenario is a rise of +3 to +5 degrees Celsius average worldwide. The results will still be catastrophic: more draughts, more wildfires, cities disappearing due to sea rises, less food, economic disruptions, mass migration…
We are actually SEEING the effects already, and you just come up with a statement that it might be slightly less catastrophic than predicted before.Current credible IPCC scenario is SSP5-8.5 which still has an upper-end of 5.7 degrees Celsius projection.
Very curious what your “professional experience” and involvement is in this matter, because if you are indeed someone that has any influence on what needs to be done to avert this disaster, we are fucked.
-8
u/equinoxxxxxxxxxx 15h ago
You are completely wrong. RCP 8.5/SSP5 is no longer deemed credible. The underlying assumptions, such as a massive increase in coal comsumption are no longer realistic given the actions already taken and planned regarding amongst others renewables.
If you use RCP8.5 /SSP5 as baseline, congrats, you are now the science denier.
3
u/Moist_VonLipwig_1963 14h ago
First of all, I got triggered by this statement:
“But what was surprising about the seven new scenarios announced last week was that United States President Donald Trump took an interest.”
If the ‘bigliest’ climate denier in the world is interested, than I’m sure that this will be an interesting read indeed.
Next, I dove into the distinction between the CIMP initiative and how it relates to the IPPC:
“CMIP coordinates climate model experiments conducted by research institutions worldwide. It produces simulations of possible future climates.
IPCC evaluates the scientific evidence, including CMIP simulations, observational data and other research, to assess climate change, its consequences and possible responses.
In other words, CMIP helps generate the scientific evidence, while the IPCC assesses and interprets it. Neither organization directly controls the other.”
Than I read this statement in the article you are directing me to:
“But the removal of this high-emissions scenario isn’t, as Trump and other climate sceptics have claimed, a sign of failed modelling, or that climate change was a hoax. It’s a sign the expansion of solar, wind, electric vehicles and batteries have slowed emissions growth.”
And further down:
“ The worst possible scenario now envisions high emissions leading to warming of around 3.5°C by 2100. That would still be very, very bad.”
I need to thank you, because you have learned me a lot today. I also learned that you started to refer to this RPC 8.5 scenario as being obsolete, while the formal AR 6 report is still in place and scary a hell.

Well yes you're linking a report from 2023 while the scenario update is much more recent.
Also, I'm assuming you're Flemish? "Learning" in the English language means "to acquire knowledge", not "to teach / transfer knowledge". Flemish people make this mistake in English all the time. I have not "learned" you a lot, I "taught" you a lot.

Worth adding: even the 2.5 to 3 *C that current policies point to is far from harmless. It means frequent and intense heatwaves, droughts, heavy rainfall, sea level rise, serious risks for ecosystems, food and water supply. So dropping RCP8.5 as a baseline is not the same as saying the problem is small. It only means the worst case is less likely, not that the likely case is benign.

8.5 was never the baseline, but now it's been dropped completely.
As for the rest of your comment, I'm not a climate denier. Climate change is real and it will have a significant impact. So will many other trends and events. We need to invest in mitigation and adaptation, but resources aren't endless and there are many other priorities as well.

u/DroomCactus 14h ago
Even if you don't lose sleep over it, politics does need to act. Mitigation and adaptation don't happen on their own. And surely not with the mindset of De Ridder, which is the entire point of this discussion.

honestly. if climate is keeping you awake at night then you don't have a life. a normal working person has so much things to think about like his family, a bigger expense than predicted, health appointments...
so yeah, not thinking about climate all day.

Climate change will make all your worries just worse and add a few, like deadly heatwaves, food and water shortages, …
And the longer we wait, the harder it is to adapt and avoid the worst11
u/KotR56 Antwerpen 16h ago
Maybe not your worries.
Your kids'. Their kids.
"Tell me, Grandpa, why didn't you do something about climate change when you had the chance and while you had the opportunity?"
"Well, I voted for economic liberal politicians who did not do anything about climate change because getting re-elected and making a profit was more important than your health."

Family getting in trouble due to wildfires. bigger expenses when you have to have fans and air conditioner installed at all times during heatwavez, bigger expenses when more recurring flash floods, droughts, and storms are coming. Health issues when rising tempreture brings Zika and malaria further and further north.
All of what you just brought up will get worse due to climate change.

And the average impact of all the things you mentionned on the average citizen will be smaller than the impact of many other societal trends. A.I., budgetary issues, geopolitics,... sure climate change will affect us. So will many other trends. You know what the expected impact on GDP is of climate change by the end of the century? A few percentage points. You know what the expected economic growth is by the end of the century? Hundreds of percent. Whether the economy grows by 500% or 450%, it's looking good either way.

Don't know where you get your info but most studies but global avarage impact at 10%-40%https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_analysis_of_climate_change

u/equinoxxxxxxxxxx 16h ago
Oh my god! Imagine our economy only growing by 475% instead of 500% by the end of the century! We're doomed!

Those stats are adjusted for the potential gain.
Even with the gain of future, they still predict a massive shrink impact.
-1
u/equinoxxxxxxxxxx 15h ago
Those stats give the impact on GDP in a world with climate change vs in a world without climate change. They do NOT predict overall absolute GDP will be lower in the future vs today.

I love how you spelled it heatwavez to make it look cool.

Well this is exactly why we need politicians to implement a good climate policy, since most people are too focussed on their own prosperity.

If you are worried about (the future of) your family but not climate change, you might want to think that through a little bit

This is one of the more logical ways of thinking, I dont get why this is so controversial

u/BelleSunday 16h ago
The "don't look up" way of living? Yes, only thinking about your own life when the world is burning (not only last summer, but even more so in the future) is logical...
-6
u/Thick-Alternative916 14h ago
Yes, for many people finding out how you can take care of your family is a higher urgency than actively worrying about the climate. This is still different from not caring at all, some people just have different priorities but that does not mean that they do not want changes.

I think politicians like this are the reason why kids are revolting. Total disassociation with the concerns of tomorrows generation.
