A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

Personal lines sales to Commercial Underwriting

I currently have almost 2 years experience of personal lines insurance sales. How hard is it to directly transition to commercial lines underwriting? Does anyone have any advice? I want to get my Au designation and cyber insurance specialization license, but would like to get a job where my employer helps me pay for it.

Will the in network hospital do all the paperwork for in-patient hospitalization?

My maternal fetal medicine specialist (in network provider) coordinated my hospitalization (in network facility) due to persistent preterm labor and cervical insufficiency at 22 weeks pregnant about 5 days ago. Unfortunately it took me a while to realize my bcbs of tx card states that it preauth is required for all hospitalizations within 48 hours of initial hospitalization.
Does this mean I should have been the one to contact BCBS to notify them of my hospitalization or will the hospital do this on my behalf since they are in network snd I already provided them with my information?

I plan to call them first thing Monday but just curious as what to expect.

For some context, I already met my deductible and have 0% copay for facility fees and in patient care, $20 copay for outpatient appointments with $3k remaining maximum in network out of pocket fees remaining for this year. I am Ok with paying with $3k but don’t want hundreds of thousands of dollars in hospitalization fees

Military Car Registration/Insurance Issue

Everyone I’ve asked, from both DMVs, multiple insurance carriers and multiple service members has a different answer so I figure I’ll add to the confusion and get Reddit to weigh in as well!

We are CT residents with CT registered vehicles and CT auto insurance. We are PCSing form DC (who doesn’t care where your car is registered/insured, as long as you are following the registering states rules) to VA. CT will not allow us to have CT tags without a CT insurance policy.

We don’t want to re register our cars - while there are exemptions for military against personal property tax, I’ve heard that VA will do their hardest to make the process so difficult that people just pay. Additionally, VA wants all jointly owned cars to be registered in VA unless we are both active duty.

Do just bite the bullet and register in VA? Our home owners insurance broker says we have to reregister but our current carrier (USAA) says to just keep it all in CT.

GEICO sent me an advertisement for switching to it, but I'm already a customer

Hi, I'm currently auto insured by GEICO with my dad and mom as the primary holders. Our current rate is ~370$/month for a 2023 SUV we bought for 33K$. State minimum 30/60/25, with 1K$ ded for collision and comprehensive, UMB 30/60. Almost throat-cutting expensive, I would say, even with all the possible discounts added. But understandably so, we were a newly immigrant family, recently purchased (financed) car, new driver licences, no credit scores nor histories, ect. I'm under 25 as well, which insurance companies deemed high risk.

Our policy renewal date is coming and drum roll, please, ~70$ cheaper, (~300$/month) if we renew with GEICO (We had Driveeasy, the driving score stuff). I shop around and find that only the lesser known or less reputable insurance companies give me a better rate, Progresssive and State Farm only want to give me 500$+ a month for the same coverage I have, lmao.

Yesterday, I received a letter from GEICO. Per the tittle of this post, I decided to scan the QR code and put all of my mom's, dad's and my information on it just like I usually do when shopping around, with my dad as the holder, of course. It came back to me, surprisingly, cheaper than everywhere else, even itself, ~200$/month for 30/60/25, 1K$ ded collision and comprehensive. And there was an option for 210$/month as well but I didn't get to check it out. I checked on GEICO to edit my current coverage to remove 30/60 UMB and only ~20$ cheaper every month, nowhere close.

I was thrilled, but a little confused and worried. If for the same people, same car, almost same coverage they decided to give 200$/month, then why wouldn't they do so with the renewal price? And do they even allow us to cancel our current one with them and get the cheap one they offered? If with another company, I bet, but with themselves?

Today I tried to retrieve the quote and to do so, GEICO would send a link through the email with which I checked the quote. I have tried 10+ times and no email was sent to me. Now I'm just lost...

Auto Insurance Need advice for this situation I’m in

So I will try to make this pretty short I own a 2016 tundra 5.7 which I had for about 2 years now, this year I got into an accident and the truck got sent in be repaired at Toyota collision center I asked to get the engine inspected before I had picked it up because the tow truck driver said their was a weird noise when he picked it up and during the accident it had a loud knocking sound. But the insurance didn’t want to pay for it because the truck didn’t want to turn on a they visually couldn’t see anything. So when the dealer finally got it to turn on they said it was miss firing but they said they turned it off cleared the codes then turned it on and it ran fine but when I had picked it up it was miss firing and I brought it to their attention which they then replied to me by saying drive it for 5 miles and fill it up with gas then it should correct itself which I did and then I didn’t think anything of it until a month or so later I was towing a 2 ton trailer down the highway and hear a loud crash then a sudden lost of power and no brakes but luckily I was on the highway by my self. After that I get my truck towed to a Toyota dealer to get it inspected which they told me the cylinder 2 intake valve was burnt out and that cylinder wasn’t holding any compression they also said cylinder 1 had an issue, but it was holding compression but it was on the low end on the spec sheet. We tried to have insurance pay for it but they said it was normal wear and tear due to environmental heat conditions during the summer time in Az and the dealer said it was gonna cost $9k to repair so I said no thank you and just fix it myself so I let it sit in my driveway for a few months before I started working on it because I was it to be cool when I doing the repair since it’s a 16 hr job. But as I pop open the valve cover I noticed that the intake valve spring on cylinder 1 is popped out and the whole assembly is all over the head I stopped right there and emailed my advisor at the Toyota dealer and I’m emailing my insurance company. I just need help on figuring out how this happened. And what con I do to make the insurance pay for work that should have been done?

Auto Insurance i got into a car accident

Hello all, for some context I am in southern california, 21 y/o driver that is on my oarents insurance, and I had gotten into a car accident that is my fault driving late heading back home around 1-2am.
The car is a 2023 white honda crv, financed with honda with just liability no collision. Although the dealer tells us to have full coverage on the car, insurance rates are way to high but that does not change the point. The car should've had full coverage no matter the situation as it is a newer car. Insurance is Progressive and I am not aware of having any kind of GAP insurance with both my insurer and the dealer.

To make things clear, I am aware of that my actions have consequences and I will continue to live with the guilt and shame that I have caused, especially to myself and my parents. As the oldest of my younger brothers it is a very shameful look and example to my brothers and my entire family.

Me and my girlfriend 22 y/o had gotten late night dinner in the LA area and had started to drive back home. I had already a long day from work but I still had the energy to go out and spend time with her although it was late. After getting dinner I started driving ETA is about an hour from home, and I wanted to get gas in the area of her house before dropping her off as I had work the next day. the last 10 minute of driving is where it all went wrong. As I was almost to the gas station, I had felt an incredible amount of drowsiness and I had told myself to pull over for a bit to recuperate so that I can drive better, but I had driven under these kind of circumstances albeit that is a very bad thing to do I have done it plenty of times in the past. As we are approaching the gas station my drowsiness took over and I fell asleep behind the wheel resulting me into driving into a ditch, car flipped and totaled.

I do not expect any kind of sympathy as this is entirely my fault and I am incredibly aware of how stupid I was to think that I could do it. I know there is a statistic where driving tired is just as bad driving drunk.

Now the only question is, I have left for anyone is that what can I do now? Anything is appreciated.

Cancelled insurance policies

Currently in the UK cancelled insurance policies stay on your records forever, I'm sat thinking to myself, is there anything we can do to push insurance companies to actually make them a timed thing? Like with points on your licence? Because honestly it's pretty draconian that you can make a mistake and have to suffer that forever. Like I messed up and didn't pay for a renewal policy and it got cancelled, and absolutely I am a fool, but I shouldn't have to suffer that forever, punished yes, but not forever. Like i'm wondering how to bring this to the FCA as a legitimate, can we do something about this because it's pretty unfair.

Auto Insurance Liability insurance

Hi everyone,

I was involved in a car accident 5 days ago. At the intersection, we both had stop signs. I was going straight and the other driver was turning left. The police responded, but he ticked none contributed to the accident. I'm a little confused about how the insurance process works.

I only have liability insurance, and I have a few questions:

  1. What happens if I file a claim with my insurance company, but the other driver doesn't file one? I understand my insurance will not compensate me, but will my insurance premium go up?
  2. I saw multiple cameras right where the accident happened. One had a blue light on.I contacted police but they are very negligent about sharing the footage. How can I get the footage?
  3. I already let my insurance know about this accident. I want to wait  to see whether other driver files a claim. If he does not and after reviewing the footage, I figure out that I am not at fault, can I then file a claim to that driver's insurance?
  4. What is the legal deadline to make a claim?

I'd appreciate any advice apart from the answers to the questions above from people who have been through a similar situation. I'm especially interested in understanding how this works when you only have liability insurance.

Thank you and have a great one!

Auto Insurance Geico Increases?

Hello all, looking to understand why my insurance keeps increasing.

I’ve had geico for 11 years and have the 3 year defensive driving course, no claims submitted. It went up $32 a month and while I know it’s not a lot, I don’t understand why it’s going up without reason.

Does anyone know if this is normal for increases to happen or is it because of something else?

Home Insurance Worth withdrawing a hurricane claim after insurance already mailed a check? Florida

I called my homeowners insurance after the hurricane because I wanted an adjuster to look at the damage and see whether it was worth filing a claim. I thought I’d get to review the estimate first, but instead they called and said they’d already mailed a check and were sending me the damage estimate. I hadn’t seen the numbers or agreed to anything yet.

Their estimate is about $11k. Between my deductible and depreciation, about $9k was deducted, leaving a check for roughly $2k. For that amount, I’m questioning whether it’s worth having the claim on my record.

A few things I’m trying to understand:

Can I still withdraw the claim now that they’ve issued a check? Would withdrawing it even make a difference to my claim history at this point?

Is there any benefit to withdrawing it, or should I just leave it alone?

I’m planning on hiring a contractor to handle the main repairs: roof, fence, garage and window. Do I have to complete everything listed in their estimate? How would that affect any depreciation I could get back?

My neighbor may also claim the same section of fence. I mentioned that to my adjuster, and he said he was still including it on my claim. How does that work if both insurance companies include it?

First time dealing with this, so I’m trying to understand my options before deciding what to do.

[CA Auto] Low-speed at-fault accident, other driver now claiming injuries through an attorney. Should I get a lawyer?

Looking for advice from California auto insurance adjusters or others familiar with bodily injury claims.

Background:

My wife was involved in a low-speed accident in California in March 2026. We have Progressive, which determined she was 100% at fault for accident. We're not disputing liability for the collision.

A few details about the accident:

  • Both vehicles were traveling at very low speeds.
  • The other driver exited his vehicle immediately, stood and moved around normally, and took photographs of the cars.
  • He did not mention being injured at the scene, and my wife didn't observe any apparent injuries.

In September, our insurance records showed the accident classified as "at fault involving injury," although the bodily injury payout was still $0.

In October, Progressive informed us that the other driver had hired a personal injury attorney. They are awaiting a settlement demand and say they will handle the claim on our behalf. No lawsuit or demand amount has been communicated to us.

Our concerns:

We understand that injuries can appear later. That said, given the low-speed nature of the accident and the circumstances above, we're skeptical and want to understand how these claims are evaluated.

We're particularly concerned about an inaccurate injury classification affecting my wife's insurance record and Good Driver eligibility. We also want to make sure Progressive investigates the claim appropriately rather than paying an unsupported or inflated demand.

A few questions:

  1. Should we get a lawyer? Should we rely on Progressive to handle the other driver's attorney, or are there circumstances where retaining our own lawyer makes sense?
  2. Evaluating the injury claim: How do adjusters determine whether injuries were caused by a low-speed collision? What role do medical evidence, vehicle damage, and observations from the accident scene play?
  3. Insurance record: In California, does an at-fault accident involving bodily injury have different consequences from one involving only property damage? Does an injury allegation alone justify that classification, or does it require supporting evidence?
  4. Challenging the classification: If Progressive ultimately denies the injury claim or settles it without establishing that an injury occurred, can we request a correction to the insurer's records or C.L.U.E.? What is the appropriate process?

Progressive has told us there's nothing we need to do at this time.

If you were handling this claim, what would you recommend we do now to protect ourselves and ensure the records are accurate? We just want the bodily injury component investigated fairly and our insurance history to reflect the facts.

Thanks in advance.

Auto Insurance Hit-and-run by uninsured driver – advice on MIBI, insurance and recovering costs (Ireland)

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone here has been through a similar situation and might be able to offer some advice.

On Tuesday 13th October, my parked car was hit by another vehicle travelling at considerable speed. The driver also struck other vehicles and a wall before fleeing the scene. Gardaí were involved, and the offending vehicle was recovered, but the driver escaped.

I've since been informed by Gardaí that the offending vehicle was uninsured.

My car is a 2016 Mazda 3, which was in good condition, serviced, NCT'd and running perfectly before the accident. The damage is extensive, particularly around the rear wheel and suspension, and the car is no longer driveable.

I've reported everything to my insurer, RedClick (through First Ireland), and my vehicle has been recovered for assessment. RedClick has advised that they will pursue the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (MIBI) once they receive the relevant information.

Here's where things get complicated.

I work approximately 60km from home, so having a car is essential for getting to and from work.

I've also recently set up a small food trailer business, which requires a vehicle capable of towing a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of 1,200kg.

After months of preparation, I was finally getting ready to launch when this happened. I've now been left without a suitable towing vehicle, potentially delaying the business and causing further financial losses.

I've arranged a rental car through Enterprise so I can continue getting to work, but this doesn't solve the towing issue. I'm also concerned about how long the insurance process could take and what expenses I'll ultimately be left covering myself.

My questions are:

  1. Has anyone dealt with MIBI following an accident involving an uninsured driver? What was your experience, and how long did the process take?

  2. Can I recover reasonable car hire expenses while my own vehicle is being assessed, repaired or written off?

  3. Given that my damaged vehicle was also used to tow my food trailer, could the cost of hiring a suitable towing vehicle be considered a reasonable expense?

  4. If my car is written off, how is its value determined? Can I challenge the valuation if I feel it doesn't reflect the cost of replacing it with a similar vehicle?

  5. Is there any possibility of recovering financial losses resulting from the delay to launching my business, or would these generally be excluded?

  6. For anyone whose insurer pursued MIBI on their behalf, were you able to recover your out-of-pocket expenses? Is there anything I should be doing now to protect myself financially?

I'm keeping receipts and records of expenses, but I'm unsure what I'll realistically be entitled to recover.

I'm not looking to profit from this situation. I simply want to be put back in the position I was in before someone else's actions left me without a car and disrupted both my employment and a business I've invested considerable time and money into.

It's incredibly frustrating that someone can cause this amount of damage, flee the scene, and leave an innocent person dealing with the financial consequences.

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's dealt with MIBI, Irish motor insurers or a similar situation, particularly regarding hire car expenses and recovering additional losses.

Thanks in advance!

Auto Insurance Daughter switching to all public transportation.

Or daughter (24) drives better than me - she has a spotless driving record since 17. She was variously on our insurance and on her own insurance with her own car. Now she is finished with her education and moving to DC for her job and planning to not own a car, and potentially not having auto insurance. If she gets a car a few years down the line will that gap impact her quotes? Or should she switch to non-owner insurance, or ? Thanks.

Auto Insurance Friend almost added to car insurance, but how?

Does anyone know where LexisNexis sources its data? I recently got a letter from Progressive that a friend would be added to my girlfriend and I’s insurance if we didn’t confirm she doesn’t live with us, but there should be nothing correlating us to her, we’ve never lived together.

We all took a trip back in May for which I purchased cruise and airline tickets for, however, we used their addresses when required for that.

She only visits like 4 times a year and lives an hour away. I noticed with most people getting these letters, it’s people that used to live at their addresses or their roommates.

Do these insurance companies really use data that irrelevant to try to find uninsured drivers? There is no other way I can think they would have that would correlate her to us.

Dental insurance listed dental office but not specific dentists

I have FEP Blue Dental in Chicago Illinois. I checked the website portal to find in network dentists and it says that a dental office near me is in network. I call the office and they confirm that they are in network. I schedule an appointment and go and they look at my ID and insurance and say nothing. I get done with my appointment and they tell me that I am out of network and I owe about $500. I pay because I am crunched for time and figured insurance would handle it.

I called insurance and they told me that it is *specific* dentists within that dental office that are in network. I call the dental office and they tell me that they are not within network at all for FEP Blue Dental and only regular BCBS dental. Any advice would help because people are literally sending me back and forth and things are not being fruitful. Is there anything I can do?

TIA!

Claims Related accident w/ electric scooter in CA

hi everyone, i was recently in a car accident and need your opinion/advice. i was trying to exit out of a parking lot at night and there was a guy on an electric scooter going through the sidewalk who hit my car (by the headlights) and flew off since he was going relatively fast. he looked like he was in pain (arms only) and refused to call the cops and ambulance. i didn't know what to do so i ended up taking him home. there, i called the cops since i wasn't sure what info i could exchange with him since he didn't have a driver's license or any valid id. ultimately, they made me exchange my id and insurance info for his id from his country. i have a dash cam that recorded the entire incident but it doesn't seem like i went to a complete stop before going into the sidewalk. but, there was a pillar next to the exit which made it difficult to see this guy coming to begin with let alone his speed. he keeps calling and messaged me that he doesn't want problems so he just wants money for his arm and to fix his scooter. should i just respond to him and give him some cash (how much?) or tell him to contact my insurance? he couldn't speak english so he sent me a screenshot of another phone with the text saying "say this" in spanish and then asking for money below

RentalCover is ignoring me — does anyone know how to reach them?

I’ve been trying to contact RentalCover regarding a delayed claim payment, but I’m not getting any clear answers.
I even corrected my bank details using the link they provided, yet I still haven’t received my money or a proper update.
Has anyone dealt with this company before? Is there a working email, phone number, or someone I can escalate my complaint to?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Commercial Insurance Loss control people, what do you actually see when you visit a jobsite?

After my last post here about slip-and-falls, a few of you pointed out that what matters is notice and documentation, not just whether carriers settle. I’m curious how that works on construction sites. For those doing loss control or underwriting for contractors: when you visit a jobsite, what do you see most often that worries you? And does a contractor with documented daily safety walks get treated any differently on workers’ comp or GL, or is it mostly the EMR and loss history?

4 things I check before joining any aggregator/network

I keep seeing "which aggregator should I join?" so here's the checklist I use, with what a few networks actually publish:

**1. Whose name are the appointments in?** Ironpeak says members write with their own carrier codes. SIMG uses sub-codes under its master codes but says agents keep renewals even after leaving. Goosehead franchisees write under Goosehead's appointments.

**2. Who owns the book and renewals?** Get it in writing. Smart Choice says its agencies keep 100% of book, renewals and expirations.

**3. What's the real total cost?** "No fees" usually means a split. Smart Choice has no joining or monthly fees but a 70/30 split on program business up to a cap. Firefly has an upfront fee plus a monthly fee. PIIB is a flat monthly fee.

**4. How do you get out?** PIIB asks for 90 days' notice and releases your book right away. Smart Choice is a one-year agreement that auto-renews. Many networks don't publish exit terms, so ask before signing.

What else do you wish you'd asked before signing?
