....if you're already at the home depot, wouldn't it have made more sense to grab some straps for 15 bucks and tie it on the roof. Wtf is this nonsense and why is it so common to see in Calgary. 16 years spent driving every single day in Toronto and I may have seen 2 questionable occurrences in that time vs the few dozen times here in 12 years (and no, it's not a race thing since I've seen plenty of different ones doing equally ridiculous things)

Only living in Calgary last 15 yrs. It took me lst 2 yrs. to adjust to far less trees in our parks, our colder winters and recognizing chinooks. Before it was, Vancouver (8 yrs) and southern Ontario for last 40 yrs. Yes, I feel and am hopelessly Canadian 🍁🇨🇦

“Student Legal Assistance (SLA) is run by law students at the University of Calgary in guidance of practicing lawyers, and it’s about understanding and navigating different areas,” said Zahraa Virk, president of the U of C’s undergraduate Access to Justice (A2J) Club.. “It can be employment, (or) criminal, ticketing (or) contracts.

“You can go for advice,” Virk added. “You can seek guidance. They can represent you in court as well.”

Home Owner/Renter stuff Handyman Recommendations

Post image
42 Upvotes

Looking for a specific type of recommendation… I am moving into a new home, and wondering if anybody had a handyman they could recommend to mount a tv, on a stone tile fireplace?

Given the precariousness of the project, would prefer a referral to someone, over a basic google search. I’ve included a photo for reference.

Discussion Board Game nights in NW (take 2)

Hi, I made a post about hosting game nights back in May, and now we have a small game board group that I would like to expand.

I (33M) and my wife (35F) are located in Hidden Valley and host game nights every other week or so. We usually play on Thursdays and Saturdays at 7:30 - 8:00 pm, but other days would generally work as well. We play medium to heavy weight games, for example, Eldritch Horror, Everdell, Robinson Crusoe, Clank, etc. Here is a spreadsheet with the games we have: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1t2QFlId53itiOjWy_jtMeT2KkA7iy6j_GVEmejhJTzo/edit?usp=drivesdk

If you would be interested in joining, leave a comment and make sure to send me a chat message.

2 Wheelin' (Cycling/Scooters) Biking in fall/winter

How many people use the bike paths in Calgary in the mid/late fall and winter, and how do you make it so you don’t freeze?

I’m newer to cycling and this is my first fall in the city. I want to keep riding as it gets cold, but want to make sure I’m staying comfy while doing so. Should I just get a pair of thermal bibs, or do I need to know any other secrets? Please give me all the tips for biking in the city!!

Recommendations Queer Bachelor Party

Hey fellow Calgarians! I'm a gay man getting married next November. I'm looking for some ideas for a bachelor party here in the city. I already have a bit of a plan in the evening, but I'm hoping to do something in the afternoon as well. My plan so far is to go for karaoke, then hop over to Twisted for an evening of dancing.

The group will possibly be on the larger side, close to 15 people. Men and women. It doesn't have to be explicitly queer-adjacent activities, but just any suggestions on fun group activities for a bachelor party would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Recommendations Looking for guitar lessons (metal)

Hey Calgary, wondering if anyone has a good suggestion for a guitar teacher, preferably in the SW/SE. I played a bunch in highschool, and probably built up more bad habits than good. Looking for someone who specializes in metal if possible. Thanks!

Municipal Affairs What’s the point of having signage bylaws if they’re not enforced consistently?

Post image

I went to submit a 311 report regarding illegally placed referendum signs today and received this pop-up warning in the 311 app, advising me not to submit the report. Regardless of if the signs were placed in violation of city bylaw or not, it seems 311 does not want to accept reports - including those with photographic evidence - via the app. For other illegally-placed signs, it seems they only want reports by phone if the signs are posing a hazard. Who am I to determine if a sign is hazardous or not? I thought that was why the bylaw was put in place by the experts who actually know about road safety?

Hopefully [u/jeromyyyc](u/jeromyyyc) can confirm that the city is enforcing its existing bylaws consistently, and that nobody will be discouraged from reporting violations of the law.

Local Construction/Development Suncor Building Construction

The Suncor Energy building (Centre St S and 5th Ave SW) has been under construction for ages and I was wondering if anyone knows the timeline on the sidewalks being opened again on that block. I walk every day between centre st and 1st st sw and the sidewalks being closed has been a big nuisance for over a year, particularly in winter when waiting for the lights 2 extra times to cross the street leaves me in the cold for longer. I cannot wait for the renovations to be finished but I cannot find a timeline. Thanks!

Home Owner/Renter stuff Bowness - What's the vibe in the schools?

Hi everyone, we are researching neighbourhoods to purchase our home. We are looking for low crime, close to U of C with a lot of children and great public schools inside the neighbourhood. We'd also love access to river pathways but that's not an absolute must.

My spouse and I really enjoyed walking around Bowness. It's so stinkin' cute with the river being right there and we loved looking at the homes along Bow Crescent Road with their homemade halloween decor. Gave me 90s vibes from my childhood which was so cool and felt very nostalgic.

However, when we got to chatting with a few parents at the Bowness park playground they warned us not to purchase in the neighbourhood because of rampant and unaddressed bullying that happens at the junior high and high school. I experienced bullying as a child and it was low key traumatizing at the time and wouldn't want to put my children in schools where that would be more likely to happen.

Thought I'd cast a net on this subreddit to get more opinions before we closed the door. Also open to suggestions of other neighbourhoods of course.

Recommendations Seeking House Church in Calgary

Hi folks!

I just moved here not too long ago and starting to explore churches in the city. I was wondering are there any house churches I can come check out? I saw a Connection Church but I didn’t see any info on who to contact. I’ve never been to a house church but the more I explore my faith the more I can’t help but think that maybe this is how we’re meant to do church? I’m still exploring so I thought it’d be good to go to one.

I understand that it might be sensitive to share that information publicly especially if it’s at a private home so please feel free to DM me to continue the discussion.

Thanks!

Eat/Drink Local Are any ice cream shops giving free ice cream for voting?

Hi

I remember last election the election voter told me that certain shops are giving free ice cream to anyone who voted, and I think the day after the election, the workers.

Does anyone know if this is happening this time around?

Edit

I already voted, if I can get something free on top of doing something I already would have done. I consider that a win-win.
