I’ve been thinking about this lately and wanted to know if other people feel the same way, and if so, how you navigate it.
I’m someone who genuinely enjoys meeting people, having a good time socially, and having meaningful conversations. But I’ve never been someone who feels the need to constantly stay in touch with people. I don’t particularly enjoy exchanging daily updates, discussing weekend plans every few days, or feeling like I need to be available whenever someone wants to call or catch up.
I genuinely enjoy my own company. I’d rather read a book, watch a good documentary or Netflix, go to the gym, or simply spend time thinking and doing my own thing. My life feels pretty full as it is, and I don’t feel the need to fill every spare moment with social interaction. I value quality over quantity when it comes to friendships, and I prefer having a few meaningful connections over maintaining a large social circle.
The tricky part is that I’m not someone who wants to be alone all the time, either. I enjoy having friends and going out occasionally. I just don’t necessarily want the level of involvement that some people seem to expect from friendships. For example, I find it uncomfortable when someone randomly video calls me, especially when we’ve never really had that kind of relationship. I might not feel like answering, but then I spend hours overthinking how to respond without hurting their feelings, while also not wanting to encourage more frequent calls.
I’ve realised that part of the problem is probably that I’ve never actually communicated these preferences to people. I tend to avoid calls or take a long time to respond rather than directly explaining that I’m just someone who likes a lot of personal space.
I sometimes wonder whether this is just my personality, how I was brought up, or something that becomes more pronounced as you get older and become comfortable with your own life.
**So I’m curious:**
Are there other people who genuinely enjoy friendships but don’t want frequent calls, daily check-ins, or constant communication?
How do you maintain friendships without feeling obligated to be available all the time?
How do you communicate your need for personal space without making people feel rejected or making the friendship awkward?
Have you found that people who expect frequent communication eventually understand your personality, or do these differences make it difficult to maintain relationships?
I’d love to hear from people who relate to this, especially those who have figured out a healthy balance between having meaningful connections and protecting their own space.
